VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
On February 6, SpaceX launched their new “Falcon Heavy” Rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
In a spectacular and very media-effective stunt they sent a “midnight-cherry-red" Tesla Roadster as test-payload on it’s way into deep space.
The rocket has the ability to put more than 140,000 pounds of cargo into the lower earth orbit, much more than anyone has commercially requested them to do. That makes it by far the most powerful operational rocket in the world. And SpaceX is already developing an even more powerful one.
The BFR, which will be more than 106 meters high and carry up to 550,000 pounds into Lower Earth Orbit.

I agree, Elon isn't afraid to fail. He doesn't get crippled by it. It is exactly how he learned how to land rockets returning from space. NASA (which I am not bashing) knows if they crash that many rockets trying to land them, congress would use it as a political hammer to attack the opposing party. There would of been hearings and all kinds of noise. If they wanted to pivot and take another direction it would mean years and years of red tape. The new commercial model vs the old cost plus model is the path forward. Musk and SX is just the proof of concept company. We just need the public to wake up to this. Which I have to give Musk more credit because he makes his launches such public events. Even my 81 year old mother was talking about the car in space.
@CriticalRoleHighlights

The BFR could fail 20 times and still not even get close to the cost of one rocket failure for NASA. That's pretty damn cheap in context.

- Clinton Didn’t care - Bush wanted to focus on the moon - Obama wanted go further and explore mars - Trump wants to focus more on the moon and maybe go to mars. SMH
@whogavehimafork
@whogavehimafork 5 жыл бұрын
I think the Trump administration policy understands that the private sector has Mars under control so that NASA with its strict budget can focus on something much more doable. During the Obama administration the outlook for the private sector was still met with much skepticism because they hadn't the significant track record quite yet. We now see SpaceX has the ability to build and launch brand new vehicles on a fairly reasonable timescale (at least compared to the federally controlled NASA). A BFR launch within the next decade is not only possible but highly likely. Humans on Mars may take a few more years but we are far ahead of where NASA would be if they were alone in it.
@thomaswijgerse723

evan, going to the moon isnt a way to get to mars, its just a different goal, you dont need to go the moon to go to mars.
@thomaswijgerse723
@thomaswijgerse723 5 жыл бұрын
@Evan Kearney not really, going there to refuel would just waste money and fuel.
@thomaswijgerse723
@thomaswijgerse723 5 жыл бұрын
@Evan Kearney going from the lunar surface to mars takes the same amount of delta as going to mars from leo. Except that on return aerobraking into leo takes a negligable amount of delta v, but landing on the moon from a hyperbolic trajectory would take thousands of m/s. Also getting fuel to Leo is a lot easier and cheaper then getting it to the lunar surface.
@thomaswijgerse723
@thomaswijgerse723 5 жыл бұрын
@Evan Kearney oh and nasa has no plans for making a base on the surface of the moon, just a station in an orbit not suited for landing on the moon. I would love to see a self sustaining colony on the moon, but it being a neccesary step for mars is nonsense. Its just a different goal. Though a good goal.

They know what went wrong. Merlin engines use a special ignition fluid (TEA-TEB) to light the engines. They ran out of that ignition fluid on the center core, so it only managed to light one of three engines on the landing burn and smashed into the ocean at 300 mph.

Commercial Space launches started in 1980, and Space tourism started in 2001. But governments will always be major customers for Space launches. National security, deep Space observation, Earth observation, weather satellites et al, all fall within the remit, or primary remit, of governments.

The greatest thing about government funded space programs is that they’re not looking to profit from it, when space X makes some thing it has to earn them money. Because of this many missions like SMAP for instance, a satellite that reads the moisture levels of every point on earth every three days could not be possible as they would not be able to profit off it without charging the country’s that need that information, something that NASA doesn’t do

actually, I think this is one big problem with democracy that elects presidents for short periods of time it is not just NASA, but all big scale projects every president comes with his own perspectives and also wants to make his own legacy, so loses interest in the previous projects don't get me wrong, of course I am not pro-dictatorship, but just saying

We don't need to live on planets at all. Google Oneal cylinders, we'll probably all be living in those rather than on the surfaces of planets. Or in Oneal cylinders placed inside asteroids, like Ceres from the show The Expanse. They could be built in mere decades relative to the centuries if not millennia terraforming would take. Plus, we already have the technology required and understand the science behind constructing them, we know very little about terraforming, we don't even know if its possible. And the closest planet that MAY be Earth-like, Proximi Centauri B, is 4.6 lightyears away.

How about spending money on innovations that would save our planet so we don’t have to go elsewhere. It’s unrealistic , just taking off to another planet. Won’t happen in our life time but these storms from global warming will continue to take lives every year until we stop pissing Mother Nature off

detail correction: the booster takes the spacecraft or tanker to space, not orbit, then the spacecraft and tanker speed up without changing altitude to get to orbit, that's why the tanker uses up a lot of its fuel, to need multiple trips to fully refuel the spacecraft.
