How SpaceX & NASA Keeps Astronauts Safe During Launch

Wednesday's launch was aborted for safety reasons related to the weather, these launch rules apply to every rocket regardless of whether they have a crew or not. However there were extra measures taken which are specific to crewed launches and it's worth discussing some of these while we wait for the weekend.
Here's a couple of articles on the Abort Modes:

Advanced Weather Combat training is standard protocol and part of the core curriculum at the Academy of Pad Ninjas, we still don’t know what went wrong. We believe the Ninja’s actually moved *too quickly* for the weather, making it unsafe for the clouds for the Ninjas to launch. I’m a firm believer that the sacrifice of a cloud or two is necessary for the advancement of society, but who am I.

Funny how some things never change. I remember my first transatlantic plane flight, in a then-old Boeing 707. We stopped at Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador to refuel before going on to Shannon, Ireland, where we landed to refuel again before continuing on to continental Europe. I had read of the old piston planes taking this route, and it was a genuine thrill to follow the same path. Back then I'd never have guessed that future astronauts would also take the shortest path across the north Atlantic for similar reasons!

Thank you Mr. Manley, for consolidating all necessary information in one single video. Wednesday I was a bit disappointed, ad the launch was postponed and a lady on NASA-TV kept explaining why. I'm old enough to remember Pete Conrad, that November of '69, telling they lost all command module avionics thirty seconds into the flight, because of a lighting. I recalled when NASA forced the Shuttle launch that frigid morning of January' 86. So really doesn't matter anymore to me, I'll keep watching until the rocket leaves the pad safely. Regards

Scott, in Apollo era we had the problem of the public become disinterested after 2 or 3 launches, making the tv audience drop, and for consequence the NASA budget fall to. In the Internet era, every space event attracts a huge audience, you think that this can benefit the NASA crewed programs?
@johnbuchman4854
@johnbuchman4854 4 жыл бұрын
This is untrue. The public was still VERY interested--it was the networks which drastically cut back their coverage. Probably due to the erroneous assumption that, after Apollo 11's success, that the race was over and won by the USA. Apollo 13's near disaster found the networks scrambling back to covering the mission. I was shocked by the drastic cutback of coverage--it was extremely obvious and the public had by no means lost interest--only the networks.
@AvatarOfBhaal
@AvatarOfBhaal 4 жыл бұрын
The audience size generally reflects how high profile the mission is. This being the first crewed mission of Falcon 9 it's not surprising it's getting so much attention. By the tenth launch with crew I expect it'll be seen as common place as the shuttle/apollo launches became and interest will fall again until the launch of Starship. As for NASA's budget, I wouldn't hold my breath for it to return to Apollo era. The Commercial Launch Programme is all about maintaining capabilities on the budget they have now opposed to increasing the budget.

Foiled by your spell-checker, I assume... ;) Ninja might have used military terms if such terms fit the situation (but of course Japanese terms of the feudal era, not of Western military structure). But they were more like mercenaries and spies, who would probably not organize in large groups during missions anyway. And they weren't a singular force fighting another singular force - they were hired by whoever wanted their services, sometimes even Samurai, since they were willing to do things that would violate the Samurai code of honor.

At least the astronaut can remove them. When John Young commanded STS-1 in which the two-man crews were wearing the modified SR-71 high-altitude pressure suits for launch and landing (as Columbia was fitted with ejection seats that were removed after STS-9), his helmet had to be modified with a mount for his prescription reading glasses, which were fixed in place and could not be removed. The post-Challenger partial-pressure LES and full-pressure ACES "pumpkin" suits, with their distinctive open helmet (requiring the fabric Soviet/Russian-style "Snoopy" caps) made it easier for astronauts to put on and remove glasses.

I live down here in North Palm Beach, and I will occasionally trek north to watch launches from the Titusville bridge and other hot spots. I've watched night launches from Vero Beach and Melbourne, I sprung for the $50 + $50 primo LC39 Observation Gantry for a Delta IV Heavy launch (worth it), and witnessed the Osiris-Rex and inaugural Falcon Heavy launches. When I woke up and checked the weather Wednesday, I decided not to go. It was a tough call because I had purchased new binoculars and a camp stool; I was ready to get in there early and stake out a prime spot and wait for launch. I'm not glad the launch was scrubbed, but I'm glad I made the right call. I will have to scrutinize the weather products for tomorrow, but the forecast also looks unfavorable. Welcome to summer afternoons in Florida! Props to spaceflightnow and Mike's Weather Page.

Somewhere near Shannon: Hey Ma, how long till dinner? About an hour. I'm just going to pop over to Disney World for a wee bit. You be back by 6:30 sharp, do you hear? And don't be eating those cinnamon churros: they'll spoil your dinner!

Scott, I'm an air traffic controller for the UK side of the North Atlantic (sadly on furlough so can't let you know what our part in this operation is), wrt 7:40 , The Irish Flight Information Region is called Shannon (as is their air traffic control centre, which is based close to the airport) so I'd guess that's the primary reason for the abort landing area being so named.

@@scottmanley Indeed. Still, lately there has been an influx of new indie space themed games and I have always loved your take on that kind of stuff. Even from older games there are gems to be found. Have you tried Space Rangers HD: A war apart? Looks simple and usual at first but depth of the gameplay is on another level. That kind of gems that you wouldnt find unless someone recommends them..

It's nice to think that Ireland (my country) is helping by providing rescue support. The Irish Coast Guard tweeted that they were prepared to assist before the last launch. I hadn't realised that this was the procedure. Hopefully never necessary!

Speaking as a Dad that also exercises regularly and watch what I eat, I thought the "Dad bod" comment was harsh. I'm pretty sure that human astronauts have more layers (cooling/bio-comfort??) under the outer suit than those mannekins.

Great informative video Scott! With Jet fuel and jet engine powered helicopter drone technology it is plausible that pre water-splashdown capture via parachute strings would be easily doable. Hang a grapple hook 500 meters down to snag the chutes and fly the thing to a ship within 200 miles. Have triple redundancy of capture-coptors in line. Screw the weather.

These suits are very like my DUI drysuit for SCUBA diving (note my avatar picture). These suits are air and water tight and very flexible. It is the helmet attachment that makes them look stiff. Inflating this suit to marshmallow man fullness approximates what would happen if they experienced a vacuum. At this point it is hard to touch your nose let alone move easily. This is why the EVA suits have hinges and sockets.

I think it would count because either Charles Lindbergh or Amelia Earhart has an emergency landing in France at the end of their trip so it guess a rocket abort would fit the criteria
