Stealth AI is never an easy prospect in game development. You run risk of making the systems trivial to overcome, or overwhelming and insurmountable. So let's take a look at how the long-running Splinter Cell franchise has approached it in previous years. This video is something of a follow-up to episode 50 on Alien: Isolation, given there are a lot of similarities to be found between stealth and horror games. Plus stick around for episode 52 later this month as I explore one of the most successful blends of stealth and horror gaming: The Last of Us.

This is one feature i want in a hard mode for stealth games. Ai have to report to a 'leader' whenever they detect stimulus that warrants investigation. And this leader will wait for the hunter ai to report either player contact or "all clear". This is important because if you kill the hunter before he gives the "all clear" the leader will eventually notice the radio silence and send more hunters to investigate the area previously reported for stimulus. this will make the player be more patient and careful before killing or incompacitating somebody, and it will provide more depth to the ai communication which would improve the suspension of disbelief. Ive always hated how ai would just never notice how alone they suddenly become after their coworkers fail to resume their patrol routes.
@senselesssai68284 жыл бұрын
Also instead of giving us easy, normal and hard version of the game give us an UI with all the options. Oh and I wish stealth games were harder. Most are way too easy even on hardest difficulties.
@CyanDreams13124 жыл бұрын
I remember playing a stealth game recently that was pretty good over all but it had this kind of feature lacking. Two NPC's were having a conversation at a distance where they couldnt see each other. If you do something to one while they are speaking the other will notice, but if you attack while they are not talking the other NPC would not notice they were missing. This seems like it would make sense but then I'd end up removing someone while the other is asking them a question or expecting a reply of some sort and they dont alert because the ai didnt realize the other one is gone.
@GonzoInside4 жыл бұрын
This feature was in MGS V. If you kill investigating soldier before he will report "all clear" then HQ will alarm everyone, that something's happened to him, and more soldiers will come to check.

The arkham games have this in the stealth systems. Whenever you are doing a predator level the villain will periodically chime in to see how everyone is doing and if one person doesn't answer they will order the other henchmen to check on them

I am not sure if your heart is the right place for SC Blacklist. After all, you infiltrate a U.S. torture prison but not to stop the torture for good, but instead torture a prisoner yourself. After this experience it is very difficult to see my alter ego as "the good guy", let alone give this game a special place in my heart. I have enjoyed SC Blacklist as a stealth experience. But not because of but despite the very questionable political messages.

Blacklist flow for stealth and combat is so fun, mixing chaos theory and conviction gameplay, it's far from perfect but i really want the next splinter cell to double down on that, it's like a John Wick scene when everything comes together in a crowded room full of enemy if you use the panther style ( stealth + lethal ) the "sandbox" levels were you fight waves of enemy was the proof it worked so well.
@mravg794 жыл бұрын
it is a pity that this game did not sell. But on the other hand I would rather play SC:Blacklist again and again, than seeing UBI making another empty sandbox. I recently bought the game again (originally I played it on PS3) and now with higher res, and smooth 60fps I can say it aged well. But I was disappointed as UBI needed to dumb down something in PC version in a patch. Trying to get highest Panther score - while throwing enemies out the window being on a ledge it was counted as silent takedown not silent kill. Sure you can exploit the systems in the game if you learn how but mastering ghost and panther on higher difficulty levels is still fun.

That last point about guards going back into an idle state when they shouldn't reminds me of an earlier Splinter Cell game, Pandora Tomorrow, which had a very defined alert level system. "SECURITY STAGE INCREASED! FLAK JACKETS ON!" If I peer far back into the foggy mists of my brain sixteen years ago, it would indeed go back to idle even from maximum panic combat mode, given enough time, but we can't be too hard on a game from 2004, when even that much was more or less revolutionary.
@walale124 жыл бұрын
Chaos Theory expanded on that nicely, once you got to the top alert level, after donning flak jackets, then helmets, they'd start fortifying their positions, flipping over tables to provide cover etc. And your support team would cancel your secondary objectives and tell you to hurry up with the mission and get out of there.

Not really, if you throw a bottle next to a dude in chaos theory, he will look for a bit, then forget about it. If you repeat, he repeats. What I want to see in stealth games is something that's never been done: detection via silhouette. Let's consider a long hallway with lights at each end, but complete shadow in the middle. In splinter cell (and any other stealth game for that matter), if you're standing up in the middle of the shadow, you're invisible, but in reality, people from each end of the hallway would see your black silhouette projected onto the lit up walls at either end of the hallway.

Throughout my playtime of the game I have noticed that NPCs have a sort of auditory priority. if you throw a noisemaker or use a distraction camera the NPC(s) will hear only that noise for a few seconds, unless your fire an unsuppressed gun, and you can run up to them and they will not hear you. And if there are multiple NPC you can start meleeing them or shooting them (with a suppressed weapon) and they will not notice until their friend is on the ground or just about to hit the ground. They wont even hear their friend being tazed. This even works on Perfectionist - the highest difficulty. They also seem to give up a lot. Just climb something and after a solid minute of them just shooting at the window you climbed through they will leave and explore the other side of the map. Leaving you to restock on ammo or allowing you to sneak up behind all of them without trying. That last bit is especially easy if you have the Stealth Nanofiber Suit which ha stealth highest stealth rating in the game. (Also if you aim with your gun while crouched you will make little or no noise at all. Even if you have a full combat suit on. You can literally clip your weapon through a heavy's butt and he will not notice unless you deliberately bump him.

You might want to check out the AI in Warframe. Enemies feel unremarkable on account of it being a power fantasy game, but they do coordinate with eachother in cool ways, such as grunts grouping up with and following "eximus" general units, or grouping into pairs so a rifle-wielding grunt can hide behind a fellow grunt's riot shield for cover.

The view-cone stealth thing lead to a really funny bug in Skyrim. In Skyrim you can usually steal stuff safely as long as an NPC isnt looking at you. Turns out you can get away with looting the whole shop as long as you throw a bucket over the NPCs head, presumably blocking their view-cone. Well of course, if he cant see you, your good to go!. Of course what the bug really was, was the fact they never thought to have the NPC complain if you throw a bucket over their head. Actually I suspect Skyrim didnt use a view cone, but rather when you stole something it traced a ray to the front of the NPCs head and as long as the ray isnt occluded, your detected.

It is really easy to destroy every bit of immersion if you get things wrong.

Agro has 5 levels for NPC behavior. Ignore: So a videogame is a program that contains both the player avatar, NPC and environments. The program always know where the player is thus the NPCs also know, but the program is telling them to ignore the player thus convincing the sense that the player is hidden from the NPC. Aware: The NPC reacts to the player in a non-hostile way. This is often used for friendly or neutral NPCs such as a shop. Suspect: The NPC is still non-hostile but it will increase its agressivness. This is where stealth component in games come in but is very brief and requires the most code for the least duration. The NPC may act like it doesn't know the location of the player (out of sight area) but will move in an are to put the player in detection area. Now the purpose of this stage is to determine if it needs to escalate to the next level often answering 3 basic questions; who is the player/NPC, what is the player/NPC doing, and where is the player doing. Aggrevated: This is also known as agro and this is the first level of hostility. Here all NPC behavior is conducted to get a tactical position against the player to attack. Fatigue: This is to simulate a NPC being stressed beyond its limit, here the NPC may run away simulating self preservation behavior, or go berserk and make a suicidal run to simulate the unpredictibality and violaatle nature of combat.

Other than the annoying times games have their NPCs go from alert back to idle when something serious has happened, the other thing which irritates me is when a game has the AI investigate things which are clearly caused by an intruder. The aforementioned flickering of lights off and on could be considered an electrical fault if the player has not yet been detected, but it would be seen in a completely different context if the AI knows an intruder is in the area. It's even worse when you have noise makers in a game that the AI will always investigate by walking right up to it even if this is the 5th time it has happened to the same NPC.
@Ayaku_ouille4 жыл бұрын
You know what they should do in a game? First of all MGSV was good with that, if you aimed at somebody with their "pants down" they shouldn't try and shoot you, that is unrealistic as fuck. But most importantly in a stealth game if somebody saw something pretty "important" like almost seeing you, they should have a % of chance to "alert" others by having random pieces of dialogue saying something like "Dude, I know I saw something, something's out there, believe me" and thus alerting others of your presence, making them more cautious.
@superlukey34 жыл бұрын
I'm glad it was pointed out that video game AI needs to be plausible and enjoyable more than it needs to be "smart" per se. A lot of people point to video game AI as a great testing ground for more practical AI and I feel that's inaccurate - an AI created to, say, autonomously do open-heart surgery, needs to always do the surgery as well as possible without exception, and indeed the point of such a machine is to be able to outclass people and do surgeries more effectively than otherwise possible. Meanwhile, an enemy in a video game *shouldn't* be as capable as possible. They should miss their shots, they should fail to pick up on some cues, they should make mistakes, because it isn't about peak performance at any given task, it's about fun. Therein lies the big discrepancy between video game characters and other forms of AI, that I think is often overlooked.

the differences in stealth gameplay between this and Elden Ring are fascinating. Rather than adapting the game to a general sense of fairness and plausibility, they disregard traditional realism and instead use fairness and plausibility markers to establish the players perspective as a tarnished of no renoun vs all these bigger than life heros & monsters. As a result, the stealth systems are suuuuuuper underdeveloped (for example, the ai doesn't usually respond to light effects at all) but also you don't really notice them as much because the game has already warped your expectations regarding how the world would react to your character.

Hah, Skyrim was a great game, but the stealth mechanics were pretty hilarious. When you mentioned how generally bad it is when AI go right back to their idle state after an alert, I instantly thought of Skyrim. It was the ultimate example of that. You could shoot an enemy right in the head and within seconds they would be back to standing around. Funny, but not good for any kind of challenging gameplay.

Blacklist did a good job with guard's AI. But there is a lot of room for improvement as features from previous games in the series are missing and other stealth games have other features as well. I'm sure it's not an easy task to include everything at once and compromises are made according do design philosophy and engine limitations. From SC1 to Chaos Theory there was constant addition of new features while some redundant or unpopular features was removed. Almost the same can be said about Double Agent to Blacklist. Ideally next game in the series should try to take as much positive stuff from Chaos Theory and Blacklist as possible and from that game continue to build a much better, feature rich stealth sequels. But knowing today's Ubisoft, Splinter Cell is probably finished. If there ever be a new Splinter Cell game, I hope at least it will be a good game.

You could have also talked about the AI in Deus Ex Human Revolution. That AI is also realistic.

I'd love to see a design dive on Dwarf Fortress, but I feel that video would take a long time to make.

Best way to play this game: Use cheat engine to hack your money and buy everything except the radar. Like don't even get the most basic radar. Play on realistic (highest difficulty). It's so good when you're not looking at your radar all the time to see where enemies are but you have all the best gear. I generally don't like staring at a screen within a screen. MGS5 is great because it doesn't have a radar or minimap on screen so you have to actually look at the world around you.

If only blacklist had the coop of Conviction, it would have been a 10/10

Could you do Trico from the Last Guardian??? I’m actually surprised you haven’t already
@julianviefers67034 жыл бұрын
Two issues with blacklist: -Not much replay value of campaign and coop mission(besides charlies) due to the guard location/numbers (almost)always being the same -mission areas are a bit to small leaving rarely ever room for multiple approaches.

I’m a splinter cell fan and love the games. But can someone please please tell me how to get rid of the mouse acceleration on pc? It’s negative mouse acceleration, which means that when you flick fast, your mouse gets slowed down. I tried putting reducemouselag=false in the .ini file but this didn’t work. I’m out of options, does anybody know a fix?

This is the 6th entry, not seventh. They are: Splinter Cell 1, Pandora Tomorrow, Chaos Theory, Double Agent, Conviction and Blacklist
@thearchitect_95534 жыл бұрын
There were two versions of Double Agent, released for different generation consoles, maybe Blackllst is considered the seventh using this approach?

Splinter Cell: Essentials from 2006. It was on the PSP, which is why everyone forgets it ever existed.
@aidancoutts23414 жыл бұрын
Double agent on the ps2 gen included missions from essentials, i wouldnt consider it a main entry. Or are we including gameboy entries too? And mobile games?

I do find truth stealth games do this its not insta fail when spotted not the 3 strikes and your out but rather you damage easily so can fight back but not get hurt enough where you ignore stealth and go cod on it
@hazrod134 жыл бұрын
we need a new splinter cell pleaaaaaase

BLacklist is closest to the greatest stealth game of the generation , chaos theory. The only thing lacking was the voice of sam. Michael Ironside can't be replaced as sam's voice.

Who have ever played 30 level of spree should that stealth is not option, because guys with shields starts shoot u anywhere you are. They are just shooting in a wall towards to your direction. There's also a lot of ridiculous levels with over 30 operators of drones, or waves with just 50 dogs which kills u almost instantly. And if u try to kill dog, she instantly calls her owner by radio, because script of dogs same as enemy's. And if dog is noticing u u already "have been noticed", aparrantly u lose stealth points

I kinda want to play it again but older Ubi games are so broken on PC
@OId314 жыл бұрын
I recently got it on PC and it runs pretty well. I have to say that it's one of the better ubisoft ports, aside from the occasional frame stutters. It's locked to 60 fps, but you don't really need more.

they should just release mappacks for blacklist. all that game needs is a bunch of missions that play well and don't have stupid explody setpiece bullshit at the end

No splinter cell was better than Pandora tomorrow. I love blacklist and conviction but they were starting to veer off the importance of stealth. I hope they make another one just not an open world disaster like they did with Medal gear solid

Was Chaos theory the last good game made by Ubisoft?
@jojolafrite904 жыл бұрын
Which one? Chaos theory is still underrated. Or at least, not that well known, nowadays.
