Thinking Basketball

Күн бұрын

A surprising offense has emerged this season, and they've combined the elements of the Golden State Warriors movement offense around Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, with the dribble hand-off action of MVP Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets, while borrowing from the Seven Seconds or Less Phoenix Suns under Steve Nash and Mike D'Antoni. This detailed film breakdown & scouting report analyzes the Sacramento Kings new offense under head coach Mike Brown, built around Domantas Sabonis, De'Aaron Fox and Kevin Huerter.

That's not Golden state's offense. I don't understand why people keep saying this the Princeton offense or Pete carrill was an assistant with the Kings early 2000's with Rick adelman the kings were the first ones to implement that system. Golden State won championships with it but in a weaker era

Less about the head coaches than the GMs who also ran the show for Ranadive. I still stay critical about the team but Divac did not help construct a good roster especially around Fox. Monte McNair helped get a couple of those key pieces in Domas and Huerter and Mike Brown was HIS own pick for HC.

@@imann2308 wasn't Gentry a defense-oriented coach? Might be misremembering that And Walton IMO was overrated coz he coached the 73-9 Warriors. He didn't really have to do much coaching then, since Kerr already installed their offense and the players were already familiar with it. They didn't win in spite of Walton, but he really didn't provide much to the table

When the Kings put Webber and the guys together in the '99 lockout, they had similar passing and an elite offensive style that led to some good years. They ended up a bad call and bad bounce away from a potential championship. Now all these years later, they're looking fun again, and maybe the next few years will surprise, minus the bad luck.

Sabonis grab and go off the board ability is a big reason why they have this electric pace. Guys are freed up to sprint the floor knowing he can confidently handle. When your best defensive rebounder can push the ball up you have a major advantage. Also, a big fan of how they combine DHOs, 45 cuts, and exit/flare/back screens into their offense. Some of it is scripted in their sets but a lot of it is impromptu action that defenses aren’t expecting. When you have read & react concepts you flow into naturally and guys are on the same page it’s a clear sign of excellent coaching.

For what SAC is trying to do, it’s not the worst thing ever. I would’ve never done it, and I think it puts a cap on your ceiling…but who cares? You guys haven’t had success in so long. It’d bring this fanbase so much joy to just make the playoffs a couple times and have a super fun team to watch year in and year out. And you never know, maybe get lucky in the draft and get that perfect PF next to Sabonis that can help protect the rim. Like a JJJr type when he was knocking down 3s…or a Jerami Grant that’s a shot blocker. I’ve heard there’s a lot of big PFs in this draft so you never know! Obviously Victor would be perfect haha, but that’d require crazy luck. Maybe Brandon Miller from arkansas? He’s 6”9 averaging 19/9 and a block, shooting amazing from 3 and FT. Someone like that. Enjoy your team. I’m a DET fan and losing Cade kinda sucked the life out of this season. Possibly for the season too. Just hoping he’s 100% for next year, guys like Ivey, Saddiq, Stew, Duren, etc. develop, and hell maybe this gives us one last chance at a T5 pick. Obviously Victor would be amazing, but I would be really happy with a 3&D wing that’s like 6”7+, can guard other big wings, and eventually be like the #2 or 2B on a really good playoff team. 🤷‍♂️ gotta find some positive. Franchise guy going down is brutal 😢

As a GSW fan who has very much enjoyed watching their ball movement style, it is important to understand just how hard it is for others to copy that motion. The biggest barriers to other teams implementing that ball movement are: 1) lacking the talented personnel; 2) sloppy turnovers; and 3) fatigue. You mostly covered 1) in your video.....most teams just don't have the multiple high quality pieces capable of executing it. For all the love Steph & Klay (& KD) and others get, Draymond is the centerpiece. His vision and ability to distribute are key to taking pressure off the other stars. If you don't have a top notch distributor like that (and most teams don't), getting that quality of ball movement is much harder. 2) Speaking of quality, that beautiful quick ball movement also comes with a LOT of ugly turnovers. The constantly fluid chaotic movement that confounds defenses can also confuse the offense. The Warriors have developed a rhythm with each other over the years, and have faith in each other and their system that the quantity of open looks they generate will outweigh the turnovers. But it doesn't always look that way. Other teams trying to copy them, who maybe aren't built to copy them, often become a bit more gun shy when the Pts off turnovers rack up. 3) That kind of constant ball movement is simply EXHAUSTING. If you're going to do it, you really need to have the personnel with the kind of conditioning to run around that much and still have something in the tank. Running around that much on offense, then sprinting back on defense amd having enough in the legs to make a solid defensive stand, only to then push the pace back up on the transition......is HARD. To do that over and over and over again, on every possession, and still have energy left in Q3 and Q4? That is not easy. And you just can't run players at that kind of pace for 35+ mins a night without fatigue/turnovers/injuries becoming a factor. So while what the Kings are doing is exciting, I am curious to see if they will be able to keep it up over the course of 82 games--with all the road trips and back-to-backs, through pain and fatigue. The Warriors rotate in KD/Poole, limit Steph & Klay to 30-32 MPG, and give the entire starting unit entire games off like once a month or more, so that they still have strong legs in April & May. Will Sacramento's level of play still look like this come February?

Love your content. One major difference between you and Jimmy Xroller is you’re great use of stats and knowledge of basketball history. If this was a Jimmy video, it would just be suggesting that all of a sudden Great players just learned to pass better but this Channel is very aware of how play styles make players in that coachees realize something works and then start doing it more. Role positions were more rigid in the past and over the last 20 years they realize it’s best not keep players in such rigid roles. If Jokic played 15+ years ago, he wouldn’t be given the point position. A young Arvydas Sabonis (the father not son) had similar taken to Jokic but never given a chance to run point. David Robinson was for one year given a semi point position and he averaged around 5 ast per game that year. But now, point position can be from anyone. In addition, offense now involves so much more passing from all positions which is due in part to some rule changes that encouraged increase offense but also coaches learning over those years and modifying the game as a result. This channel is great at telling it exactly how it is while Jimmy is more click bait type and lack of knowledge on how basketball has evolved over time. As a result of the click bait style, every video is about how X player today is probably the best of all time!

I've been slow to jump on the Kings train, but after watching this video I realize that they emphasize all of my absolutely FAVORITE principles of scoring and especially creating advantages in transition. In those situations after makes, you can still regularly create advantages by simply advancing the ball quickly and getting to half-court before the defense is ready for you to. On almost any given play there's a pass available that will create these advantages on some part of the floor, and it feels extremely validating to see this concept talked about in a Thinking Basketball vid.

It's nice to see things come full circle. It was the Sacramento Kings in the late 90' and into 2000 that invented this type of basketball. Divac or Webber off the high post, Peja, Bibby, Doug, Bobby, Hedo reading body movements and cutting back door or through the lane for layups or shots beyond the arch. They weren't calling plays. They had a base set and they ran motion. You hear Steve Kerr in an interview that a lot of GS offence plays is predicated to those Sacramento Kings team. Give credit where credit is due.

Jokic is what Arvydas Sabonis would have been it Sabonis came to the NBA earlier and was given a chance to play point. Back then roles were rigid so PF and centers weren’t given a chance to play point even if given the chance. Sabonis was just as good as passing and just as smart with the ball and just as good as scoring. Jokic has the edge on dribbling but that might be because Sabonis didn’t have to perfect his dribbling in an era where post play was the main play.

sacramento kings have been without a doubt the most fun team to watch this season. the beautiful offense, the great chemistry between players and just the overall joy in watching the city rally behind a team that's been a directionless bottom-dweller for so long. hoping to see many more beams lit in the coming months and hopefully even some in the playoffs 🙏

The irony of this is that the Kings started these types of offenses with Webber, Divac, Peja, and Bibby in the early 2000. Rick Adelman was ahead of his time, allowing the bigs to operate in the high post and dishing out to open players through screens. Webber and Divac also had the freedom to grab a rebound and run the offense in the open court.

This kind of playstyle is like a tradition being passed down from one coach to another First it was Popavich and the Spurs who always use more passes and movement to score, upon being a Assistant Coach from that team, Steve Kerr implemented it on his own team with the help of the best 3p shooter in basketball and made a successful dynasty. Now Mike Brown who was previously a Assistant Coach of Kerr has his own team and implemented it on his own way and even improving and combining it with Sabonis center playstyle. Hope in the later years this kind of play is still widely used because in my opinion, passing and movement with the whole 5-man team is the right way in playing the game
