Kevon Looney is amazing and has continued to improve every year. 39th in pay among NBA centers, on a recent multiyear contract where he clearly could have gotten more as a free agent. He overcame an injury that would have kept most out of the NBA and still limits him to this day (in high school in Milwaukee he was reportedly called KD Looney because of his ability to score from anywhere). He has almost no above-the-rim game yet led the league in offensive rebounds and is huge part of the Dubs motion offense and a prime defender. Instead of living in a mansion with a posse, he reportedly lives with his parents and other family in a SF condo, super humble and positive.

“Clearly could have gotten more as a free agent.” This is wrong because Looney did test free agency in 2022 and no one bit. It should’ve read “clearly he should’ve gotten more as a free agent.” The Warriors let GP2 go and paid Looney, but they got him for a steal of a price that’s for sure!
@pinobluevogel6458 Жыл бұрын
Looney has been a consistant and flexible cornerstone for the Warriors all this time. While he hasn't faced truly skilled and overpowering centers yet in the playoffs, he is really good at adapting and sticking to what works. He is also sneakily a really good rebounder, especially offensively. (which is a way harder thing to do than defensively) Kevon is a very versatile and smart post player. However, I would love for him to try this nonsense scheme vs Sabonis against Embiid, Jokic or even Jonas Valanciunas. They would eat him alive on every possession.

5:33 : Steph ends that wild play with a hook floater over Sabonis in the lane...and on his way down, Steph hooks his arm over Domantas' mid-section to keep him from the would-be rebound. What's Sabonis' response? Watch him take a swipe with his arm and hand at Steph's face ( 5:33 ) which Steph seems to avoid by falling away. What's Sabonis' secret to his success in this league? Every single possession he seeks a way to move people out of the way with thinly disguised illegal clear-outs, arm swings, hip checks, and blatant two handed shoves. He specializes in craft and guile to disguise his employment of brute force. I can understand and admire the way Steph, Loon, and Dray figured out a way to dish it back.

@luisgutierrez7338 Жыл бұрын
@DON'T KILL ME Ahh, it didn't register for me that it was offensive rebounding. I was curious if that's being taught for defensive rebounding now though? I feel like he was implying it for rebounding in general. I was also confused because in those clips, Sabonis had front position on Looney (closer to basket) so it makes sense (to me) to find man, rather than waiting by the rim.
@RaymondStone Жыл бұрын
The rebounding part confused me too, particularly because the Kings went up 2-0 in the series in part because the Kings got many second chance opportunities due to offensive rebounds where the Warriors were caught tracking the ball instead of accounting for players crashing the boards. So I actually disagree with the coach's take on rebounding since Sabonis tracked ball with plenty of time to react to a reasonable opportunity for a rebound. The problem is that sometimes the bounce just favors the other team.
