Excess and desires are synonymous with discontent and dissatisfaction. They’re a self-defeating impulse.
Epictetus said, “Curb your desire - don’t set your heart on so many things and you will get what you need.” And Seneca said, “You ask what is the proper limit to a person’s wealth? First, having what is essential, and second, having what is enough.”
Temperance is the knowledge that abundance comes from having what is essential. The Stoics often used temperance interchangeably with “self-control.” Self-control, not just towards material goods, but self-control, harmony, and good discipline always-in pleasure or pain, admiration or contempt, failure or triumph. Temperance is guarded against extremes, not relying on the fleetingness of pleasure for happiness nor allowing the fleetingness of pain to destroy it.

This video couldn’t have come at a better time. I’ve been drinking for 18years. I’ve drank almost every weekend. My longest sober run was 26days. At this very moment I am choosing to triple that, hopefully 🤞 longer …. I will report back in 78 days.Thank you 🙏 Ryan and all your work.

I’m trying too brother, I used to drink 12 beers every day after work and sometimes at work. Now I’m 2 weeks sober, going to the gym every day, but the craving for alcohol feels physical, body aches, sweats and extreme urge to drink alcohol. I’ll get better soon:)

Breaks are the best way. I get a lot of dopamine from drinking. When I was younger my Dad made me stop drinking for a year because of a fight I got in. In 2020 I stopped drinking for a year because it made me feel depressed. Now I will not drink for a few months at a time. If I attend a social event in that window I will drink. If its outside that window I don't even consider it. By taking it off the table for a period of time you will enjoy it more and learn about how it makes you feel.

The problem with alcoholics is they're killing brain cells. Their mind is so mushy they have no idea of reality. While they're getting drunk they're turning their back on the people that love them and they don't even realize it. The people that have to live with alcoholics go through hell. Especially young children that don't understand why is alcohol more important to Daddy than I am

You can do it. Don't say "hopefully". You can and will do it. The desire won't disappear for 100%, you will have difficult days. But whenever you're struggling, say to yourself: I'm going to stay sober for a least one more day. Before you know it you will be sober for a year. I wish you a wonderful journey.

Hey Ryan, you helped my wife with one of the most profound paradigm shifts in our marriage/ life. For the last 2 months, I have been practicing stoicism, and we both found we were spending 90 % of our energy on the wronge matters. Since then, we both found much better jobs, moved 3 hours away to a much better place, finally stopped drinking every day for the past 5 years, and finally feel proud of who we are as individuals as well as a unit. Thank you, we appreciate your existence and how you spend your time and energy.

I quit porn because of Ryan's book Discipline is Destiny. There is no easy way. You have to give yourself forgiveness and know there is a better version of you waiting. I used porn to mood regulate. Whenever you are triggered to use, take 3 deep conscious breaths. Feel the uncomfort and anxiety. Learn to love it and only then will you conquer it. It's amazing to be on the other side. I feel like a warrior. I wish you the best on your journey!

As a long-time student of Stoicism, I found this video to be incredibly insightful and helpful in understanding the power of Stoic philosophy in overcoming addictions and maintaining sobriety. The idea that discipline is destiny truly resonated with me, and the concept of the dichotomy of control is a crucial reminder that we only have power over our own minds and actions. Furthermore, the acronym HALT (Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired) highlights the importance of self-awareness and understanding the root causes of our urges and cravings. It's comforting to know that the Stoics themselves were not immune to these struggles, but their teachings provide us with valuable guidance on how to regain control over our lives. Lastly, the emphasis on service to others and being a part of something bigger than ourselves is a powerful reminder that we can find meaning, purpose, and even healing through acts of kindness and support. Thank you for sharing this profound wisdom with us, and for providing a thoughtful and positive space for self-improvement and personal growth.

I started watching the Daily Stoic shortly after I came home from a short rehab/sober house stint in February and January of 2022. I noticed that stoicism and AA align in many ways. Even through the 12 steps you can see how closely they align. I discovered for myself personally sharing my story with others at meetings has been the most beneficial thing in my journey of recovery. But by far best part of speaking at a meeting isn't sharing. It's hearing the newcomer speaking up and saying how much it helped them. That keeps you coming. But the benefits of service are tenfold you're no longer focused on you and self pity. You look at what you can do for others. Thank you Ryan for doing what you're doing. You're bringing people to a new home simply by expressing yourself and studying. In 4 days a day at a time I'll have 16 months of recovery. And thank people like you, others in my life, and a higher power of my own conception for being able to do that.

I've been sober from Alcohol for 4 months now. Decided to quit for good on my 25th birthday. I wasn't much of a drinker; only would do so in social situations. Quitting was a domino effect of me quitting Marijuana once I became a Fireman about a year and a half ago. I felt that if I could quit that, which I really enjoyed, I could quit drinking. I felt I was only drinking to appease others' comfortability in social situations and didn't like that because at the end of the day it's my body and it's up to me how I treat it. I feel better than ever without any hangovers at all and the mental clarity amongst other benefits, is worth steering clear of even a sip. Thanks for the reminder and the help you're doing for so many others Ryan.

Funny that Ryan mentioned his own tendency to be a workaholic... I've often thought that about him. I love his videos, but have felt ,at times, sad for him. It seems like wherever he is, his mind is on doing these videos for us. He reminds me of a story about the Dallas Cowboy running back, Calvin Hill. He was also the father of NBA player Grant Hill. After his NFL career he became a mentor/counselor for NFL players struggling with addiction. At one session one of the players said to him, in essence...."Calvin it is great you're helping us, but if you don't want Grant to be here, you need to spend more time with your son, than us." I hope Ryan has true balance in his life and is able to really practice all of what he is providing for us.

Controversial Opinion Hi, Ryan. I am following your advice to continue to read the daily stoic and apply it in life. As Epictetus, said in Discourses, 3.21.1-3 “show us the changes in your reasoned choices, just like the shoulders of gymnasts display their diet and training, and as the craft of artisans show in what they've learned.” Everybody is different, but when we catch ourselves wanting to condescendingly drop some knowledge that we have, grab it and ask: Would we be better saying fewer words or letting our actions and choices illustrate that knowledge for others? To answer your question. Epictetus’ Discourses, 3.21.1-3 speaks about learning. Since learning is more than hearing and seeing it is integrated into the mind and comes out as wisdom rarer than knowledge. At that point the information no longer copied the research but explains the research In an understandable Way. Showing the the wisdom we get through this digestive process is how we apply this knowledge to our own lives. In the context of Epictetus’ Discourses 3.21.1-3, showing vs. telling refers to the distinction between saying that one is virtuous versus actually demonstrating virtuous behavior through one's actions. Epictetus argues that it is not enough to simply talk about being virtuous, but rather one must actively live out their virtuous beliefs through their actions. Epictetus uses the example of a musician to illustrate this point. He notes that a musician cannot simply talk about their skills, but must demonstrate their abilities through their performance. Similarly, individuals must not simply talk about their virtuous beliefs, but must demonstrate their virtue through their actions. Overall, showing vs. telling highlights the importance of embodying one's beliefs and values through action rather than simply discussing them. It emphasizes the significance of practicing Stoic principles in daily life, rather than just preaching them. Actions speak louder than words, demonstrating one's true understanding of Stoic wisdom. Speech is Sliver. Silence is Gold. But a Pause is Diamond. It speaks about learning is more than hearing and seeing it is integrated into the mind and comes out as wisdom rearher than knowledge. At that point the information no longer copied the research but explains the research In an understandable Way. Showing the the wisdom we get through this digestive process is how we apply this knowledge to our own lives. We can apply this teaching by subscribing to your channel, reading all of your books, and sending you (the most knowledgeable individual on stoicism) our questions. Which I did over 3 months ago and I still have yet to hear back. I am sure you are busy. However, I would appreciate it if you could let me what you think of this understanding.

Hi I love your videos. I was however a little disappointed in a blog post you wrote. I'm not sure when it was written but it was one thing you said, that made me think, that it didn't need to be said. You wrote about president Grant, but you had a subtle dig at Trump. You didn't mention him by name but your reference was about him. You said something like, unlike a former president, he isn't the most persecuted president. I was disappointed because it wasn't being kind, which is also part of the stoic mindset. I just believe it didn't need to be said. It didn't help the article, if anything it nearly caused me to stop reading, and not take you seriously. I have only just discovered your channel and I love it. Thanks for your awesome videos and your contribution to the world I believe you are making a real difference to the world 🌎. Thanks again.

I love doing the thing because it doesnt feel like work but he only trains real fighters and Im scared i will legit die doing it . Stocism should tell me i do it and acceptcane of the reality might be the cause and dying know my love of something is important. FUCK

See I have a really hard time quitting marijuana. I've been smoking it for over house my life and help smooth anxiety and I really enjoy it but it is a huge waste of my money. I would appreciate it if you would make an entire video about reasons to quit smoking weed❤ 0:09

Hey Wayne, every one of Ryan's videos teach why sobriety from 'any' substance is the strong position in life...

@@jesusofnazareth6254 it's not just recreational I do it for my anxiety really really helps for that. So it depends what you define as a waste. So maybe I shouldn't stay huge waste of money but a financial burden. And I'm sure there's some other disadvantages but that's not to say that it doesn't have advantages

why do I want to get/stay sober? stoicism taught me about moderation, I'm going to enjoy sex, drugs and rock and roll until the day I die. I've been wasted maybe 8-10 times in the last 5 years, staying sober is lame, why stay sober? people that are sober are still ruining their lives with their shitty diet and smoking a ton of cigarettes, moderation is key to life, if you cut one thing out, you will just replace it with another bad habit, learn moderation, I don't trust people who have no self control. whether it be booze or food. I know most will disagree with me, but enjoy everything life has to offer, but in moderation, it's not that difficult.

This is the problem with the world. I started watching this and thinking what a great and selfless video and half way through i realise hes trying to sell us some ridiculously expensive counsiling. Then it leads to thinking why does he really make these videos and again it leads to his wallet. Every single human being in this world is selfish even the ones trying not to be (usually they have the wool pulled over there eyes)

you sound cynical. earning a living is necessary in the world. how are you earning money? when youtubers plug a product it’s how they earn their income. amazing feature of youtube is you can fast-forward right past it. he isn’t doing this work SO THAT he can sell it. he is doing this work because it’s his calling and he has found a way to get paid to follow his calling. you could too but you are viewing money as evil. change your attitude and your life can change.
