I'd love to listen to this but the background music and overuse of images and cuts is incredibly distracting. You're more interesting without these things.

To be fair, the stories about Nero, if true, showcase what would probably be a case of mental illness or brain damage, not plain vanity i belive.

All leaders are narcissistic. Part of what makes them leaders. Without narcissism they wouldn't have the desire to be a leader in the first place.

Half the society is narcissistic. All the pronoun people and alphabet people r not narcissistic? They take their reality as the objective reality. All celebrities, politicians r narcissistic. Anyone who does something which requires endorsements will be narcissistic. Trump is nothing out of the ordinary

Imagine Socrates and Schopenhauer in conversation... 🙃 Schopenhauer's concept of the "will" as an underlying, irrational force driving human behavior would most probably trouble Socrates. Socrates believed in the power of reason to overcome base impulses, whereas Schopenhauer saw reason as often helpless against deeper, more primitive drives. A hypothetical dialogue between them would be electrifying - Socrates relentlessly questioning Schopenhauer's pessimistic worldview, pushing him to expose the logical foundations of his philosophical pessimism! I for one would attend that particular debate 🧠

This comment will probably drown in the sea of comments praising this video but I hope at least one person reads it. When talking about historical leaders of the past like Nero we have to consider how we know about them and what we know for sure. Nero's historical reception is far from conclusive mainly because of the sources about him being possible tainted by strong biases from senators like Sueton. The comparison to trump is lacking

The impetus for narcissism is misplaced values, usually caused, encouraged or motivated by neglect. Wherein we establish, the basis for fufillment AND Love on externalalities. So Nero, Trump.. were taught the importance of power & money, without the principles, love and humanity, that guide one well through that power, that would avert or temper, their obscene selfishness. And so too with Americans, who have a "Bill of Rights", while we NEED a Bill of Responsibilities.. and so a nation of me me, me's voted for the most ME MF of all.

I HAVE TO DO THIS But I have to overcome the seemingly insurmountable 'NO YOU CAN'T' voice in my head...Thank you ~ Chris in UK : )

I love how Socrates’ paradoxes make my brain both implode and expand simultaneously. The man lived like a philosopher, debated like a warrior, and apparently dined like an Olympian-what a vibe!

Finding this video just now trying to shirk off the trauma given to me by men laughing that they now in fact control every fiber being of my livelihood and wondering how I’ll manage to survive a second term. Like I always knew I was potentially to die young assuming it be by nukes in ww3 but a bit later closer to hitting 40, but no it’s gonna happen in my early 30’s :/

At 7:28 Xenophon describes Socrates rhetorical style in his apology as Megalogaric. Which is to say Socrates speaks boldly and does not sugar-coat his speech to appeal to pity or assuage the good graces of the jury. Socrates according to Xenophon wishes to be acquitted only on the merits of the bare facts, not because he’s been nice, or conciliatory to the jury. Something which is faux pas in legal practice today.

While overt narcissism is frequently discussed, I believe covert narcissism deserves equal, if not greater, attention. It plays a significant role in today’s culture wars, particularly in U.S. politics, where left-leaning analysts often embrace self-righteousness without acknowledging their own “devils” within.

I think that Socrates often made arguments that he himself did not believe. This might be confusing but this is why his last argument is not what he believes and his first argument is often more so what he believe because it is engaging but somewhere in the middle he says what he believes and then he deconstructs his own belief. Along the way he’s calling out the pre-Socratic philosophers and that anti virtue philosophies. His dialogues are also very dramatic which is partially what makes them effective since he is also reforming the person whom he is talking to and challenging them even when they offer a satisfactory answer, he wants to see how they will defend their beliefs and at what point the passions come out and if he succeeds in this he has beaten them since he does not become angry about the things he disagrees with. The time that he almost got angry and bested was by a Pythagorean on his death bed when the Pythagorean made a convincing argument that after death he would cease to exist. Socrates expresses his desire to become angry and then calmly executes a dialogue that uncovers his true belief in virtue and wisdom and their role in reforming the soul to be prepared for the afterlife. …You’re welcome.

Ryan, your failure to distinguish between a healthy and unhealthy ego is your biggest mistake. If you make your ego (your shadow) your enemy, your philosophy is doomed.
@NegativSpace-pd6cz
@NegativSpace-pd6cz 7 сағат бұрын
Ego is not the enemy, we all need ego to function in every day life - ego is your sense of self (the “me” or the “I” that we all feel ourselves to be. An inflated and defensive ego is harmful, but a well-adjusted and humble ego is perfectly healthy.

What about Commodus? He was the son of Marcus Aurelius, but he turned into a very bad leader and disgusting human being. So why did Commodus go bad? Who's at fault? Was Marcus Aurelius a good leader, but a bad father?

DUDE you and Donald Robertson in conversation is such an amazing thing for me. I am super grateful. Too much to list but he is just beyond and was my first 'mentor' in modern philosophical stoic based thought. Thanks so much.Also I am in the UK so it resonates the affect and comms. sublimely. both of you. I'm dual citizen. Scottish people get it. Like stoic is a birth knowledge or something. biased .
