Exactly. Because he had no foreknowledge he was forced learn everything from the ground up including magic and the written language of this world. This also allowed him to quickly realize that, for whatever reason, the foreknowledge the other heroes had often did not match up one to one with the actual world they were summoned to. Also, the other heroes all learned their magic from orbs that just granted them the spells with no knowledge of how it actually worked. Naofumi had to learn from a book. This was far more difficult because he didn’t know the language and magic books seemed to be their own language on top of that, but it gave him far more flexibility in how he casts magic as well as having an understanding of how it actually worked which allowed him to improve and cast more advanced versions of the magic he learned from the books. The other heroes refuse to actually take the time to learn anything, assume everything can be done by their weapons, assume Naofumi learned the written language from a shield unlock, and use it as another excuse to continue being jerks to him because they think he just refuses to tell them the material he gave his shield to unlock the language. One thing I like about this story is that while Naofumi is one of the strongest people around and continues to get stronger he has had to work and suffer for every tiny scrap of it and will continue to do so.

plus with the 4 cardinal weapons ability to summon pick out who gets summoned is playing role in it too, as Shield always gets its first choice but the other three often get dont get there top pick. This leading to the hero they get having general problems. Naofumi didn't get those cheat crystals to learn magic an learned it through hard work, gave him genera understanding how magic worked an thu made him much stronger. But ya the other 3 just are trying to brute force every fight while chugging spirit potions as they burn there SP with out a plan

Eh. I actually like the idea that Naofumi can use Air Strike Shield offensively because it does have the term 'strike' in it. It's not necessarily a damaging move unto itself, but giving it weight and mass and the ability to be moved in such a way that it can ram into a target at the cost of doing virtually no damage like it did against Motoyasu demonstrates something important; a shield CAN be used as a weapon, which is the foundation of the Cursed Series. And if memory serves, Air Strike Shield started the transition to Shield Prison and Iron Maiden, so it stands to reason it would have some offensive qualities as a result if it lead down an offensive path.

It original skill suppose to be called 'Erst Shield' erst meaning first in german. Thats why he had another skill called second shield and dritte shield that summon another 'air strike' shield with longer range. Erst-secand-dritte (first-second-third) The miss typo translation originate from the fan translatiom of the web-novel(Which isnt canon btw people have been kept asking that) and the offical translation for the light novel just went right with it without much more research. This also works for other 'air strike' skill like air strike javelin The shield wasnt suppose to move nor teleport like how it shown in the tortoise battle. Its like a brick wall being put on certain places until that shield is destroyed or finished run down time

Another thing the light novel talks about but the anime ignores is dissection. Naofumi often dissects new monsters his party kills in order to offer different pieces to the shield. That's how he gets the usapil meat, bone, and leather shields. He also offers up whole monsters as well, which gained him the usapil shield. It isn't stated in the novel, but I think it's safe to assume the other heroes don't do this, as they're pretty arrogant and would likely see the labor of dissection as beneath them. Most of the dissected shields Naofumi gains are quite weak, but by equipping them for just a little while, he can obtain the passive bonus from each. The bonuses are generally pretty weak, but even +1 defense is useful if you have a hundred of them stacking together.

Thing is... Naofumi is not OP. He is behind or at least as strong as previous generations of heroes. Its just that a lot of knowledge has been lost or politics getting involved, or the pride of the other heroes getting in the way that makes them fall behind. We see later that Shield Heroes CAN attack and have offensive capabilities in the LN. And as a small spoiler, the other heroes were not their weapons first choice. Only Naofumi was his weapons first choice.

I have a theory, that legendary shield simply purposely removed offence stats, why you may ask? Why would you need offence stat if you have 3 legendary heroes who already focus purely on offence, why not focus on your main task: defending and defend other legendary heroes. Ancient/previous shield hero only had bow hero to relay on. Which is a ranged glass cannon, if he dies, there is no one else(ignoring star heroes). So it does make sense for shield to have low, but still have some offence stats, just in case, but if you have 3 heroes, the chances of them all dyeing before you are low, either you do poor job or your offence stat as shield hero would be useless anyways. Next thing spirit have mentioned, is that shield heroes DIE super fast, like super fast compared to others, so it would make sense for spirit to perhaps look at more defensive/more tanky hero, to increase likelihood of them surviving. I feel like shield spirit decided to simply rework/change build of it's weapon and make it's heroes focus purely on defense and no offence. This is just a theory though.

Most games let you have 5 playstyles. 1: Setter (You tank and enable teammates through crowd control) 2: Bruiser (Tank and deal big damage back) 3: Tank (You just eat a lot of damage and can take aggro) 4: Support Tank (Debuff or buff while tanking) 5: Self Sustain Tank (They can keep their own health high) For Mobas you'll see a lot of setters/peelers pulling in enemies to then get deleted by the team's dps players. Bruisers and tanks are more common in most games. Support tanks can be seen in turn based games. Self Sustain tanks is very common in pokemon and Mobas. One of the more extreme examples I have would probably be Persona 5 Royale. One of my demons passively had massive damage reduction, status cleanse and insta-kill immunity. My passive sustain let me recover 98% of my HP at the start of every turn and I had 1 auto revive for every battle. You can only make it very late game where it's not needed but I could enable auto-battle for ng+ against hard usually late game boss and passively over level myself while I do other things. I know there are games that let you just nuke everything or have high difficulties do too much damage that you can't tank but for the once with more combat depth having variety is good. I know for 1v1 in pokemon self sustain tanks can be very strong if they can also give a health draining status effect to the opponent.

I actually stopped watching season 2, because the pacing is so horrid. They completely ruined Ost and the moment I saw what they did with the Arc where Naofumi meets Kizuna I just lost interest. The anime completely butchered the story. I guess I'll just stick to the manga and LN. The Light Novel is great. Naofumi has so many great scenes in it, that it feels like a completely different story from the Anime. Maybe I'll start reading volume 13 soon. After the anime butchered the current arc, i have no reason to withhold myself from actually reading the good parts.

Naofumi unlike the other heros put EVERYTHING into his shield. He broke down mobs into Skin,Meat,Organs, and bones cause he almost always got a different shield when he did this. The skin would be the strongest defense shield, the meat would give him a shield that would give him bonus to cooking, organs and bones gave him bonus to craft skills and abilities. This wasnt all the time, but alot of the time, with the results mixed sometimes like bone being the strong shield or skin giving crafting bonuses. But once he master a shield he kept the + to stats and abilities except for equip effects like shields with counter strikes like Dog shield and snake venom shield. So he was getting alot of +1 to +3s to his stats for every shield. The other heros mostly focused on boss or tougher mobs to put into their weapons so even though they were higher level then Naofumi Naofumis stats were MUCH higher. Thats why Spear guy could only really hurt Naofumi with his power attacks even though he was 20 levels higher then him.

He does use counters. The venom snakes from the green chimera viper shield and some other are usually being used by him. The problem is that he sometimes dont have the much time to do counters. The counters also becoming more weak as they are facing an even greater enemy

Yes but apparently Naofumi can't even do damage, really. It's somewhat covered in one of the Cut Content videos. He punches Motoyasu in the face to prove he can't do damage. Now, as mentioned here, maybe with the Attack +3 from that one shield, he could've done SOME damage... but he needs like attack +100 to really be able to kill anything.

Another personal favorite I recommend that has lots of action, leveling up, and plot twists is Nanomancer Reborn. It doesn't have a comic adaptation, but is still super good 😊.

The fact that not being overcome by the rage shield made him turtley enough for the turtle club was clearly an obvious inevitable spoiler when all 3 of the girls stopped him from being controlled by rage in season 1. It ain't called "Rising of the shield hero" for chips and giggles.

I thought him using the airstrike shield as a projectile was because it would kind of stun the person. For the spirit tortoise I thought was using it to stop it from regenerating

I went through a lot of the books by have not watched the anime yet. In the book's he managed to unlock the shield abilities because he asked all of the other legendary Warriors how to power up his weapon and they all told him different method so not knowing what was true he tried them all and all of them work.

Fan fact: the anime adapt the manga version when he was battling against motoyasu and not the light novel version and I kinda like that because naofumi did pretty muck insane things in the light novel that should be CENSURED! He was SAVAGE with motoyasu I still can't believe what he did to him !

The reason Naofumi specifically has such abysmal attack stats and almost never gets any ATK bonuses, IMO, comes down to how Motoyasu told Naofumi that the shield was helpless in battle, which ended up shaping his perception of how it should work. However, we know that a past Shield Hero was able to use offensive skills with the Shield, such as a shield bash and shield throw, and it's honestly a shame that Naofumi never acquired stuff like that. Sure, being a tank and support is pretty great, but having the option to attack with stuff that's not the Cursed Series would've been great.

My impression from the anime wasn't that Naofumi had NO offense, but that he just couldn't use weapons such a sword, spear or bow, etc. Using a shield like a battering ram is a form of offense without really having an "offense skill". Since he's not throwing his actual shield, but instead one of it's abilities, I didn't see it as going against the precepts that he has no offensive skills. Between the 2-headed black dog shield and the soul eater shield, he does, to an extent, have some offense options that aren't a "skill" but instead a shield ability he unlocked.
