It would be so easy to make this show a cynical satire with no scrupulous about it's characters. But the greed and entitlement of the Roys are just ONE of their flaws. This family drama could be applied to anyone, and that's what will make this show timeless.

I finished it recently, and instantly began to re-watch it again. All of the characters are train wrecks in their own way and balanced in a realistic, relatable fashion. You find yourself rooting for them, being repulsed by the them, and empathizing with each of them. Top notch acting and writing across the board from start to finish. How many times do we see shows phone in the last season or two of an otherwise strong series? Not here. Everyone brings their A game, every single episode. It's just phenomenal.

Thank you for this video, I agreed with so much of what you said. For me, the show is one of my most favorite ever. How could I dislike and care about people so much at the same time? I felt for them all because of the traumas that they had had in their lives Yet I resented them because they had so much that came so easy. This is a show in Paradox shot brilliantly. Acting, writing, camera, work, music, locations, verisimilitude, all made this like watching little movies, and I will always appreciate this series

I like your point about incompetence. A lot of people say this is about the stupid entitled incapable spoiled children of a billionaire. But while its true that some characters are more capable than others, from the show it's clear that everyone is petty ane greedy, fucks stuff up, makes mistakes. The only difference between winners and losers is being ruthless, not skills or intelligence.

The cast is fantastic. As single persons and as an awesome unit with electrifying chemistry. I know Matthew MacFadyen from almost all his work, he is always brilliant. But Jeremy Strong was a revelation to me. Kendall Roy is one of the most difficult parts ever. Jeremy nailed every shade of Kendall. The one liners are hillarious. One of my favourite is Cunt Monte Christo:-).

Great essay Steve, keenly observed, and nicely edited and narrated, you can be very proud of all the work you put into this, well done and thank you. I’d like to give you a steer towards a sublimely good show you may not have heard of called Mr Inbetween (Disney +). I’ve never seen a show so well conceived, written and acted (Succession, The Wire and The Sopranos notwithstanding!). There’s only 3 seasons and each episode is less than 30 mins long, but how they managed to pack so much story into each one (without it ever seeming too much) is beyond me. It also does something very rare…it excels in the maxim of “show, don’t tell”. To make the whole thing even more remarkable, it’s written by the guy who plays the central character of Ray, and he’s never acted before but when I tell you he puts in a performance that’s as grounded as Gandolfini gave us for Tony, there’s no hyperbole. If you check out the first episode alone, it’ll take less than half an hour out of your day and it’ll give you a perfect flavour of what’s to come.
@steveskonntent10 ай бұрын
Thank you for the kind words, and thank you for watching! I don’t think I’ve heard too much of Mr. Inbetween before, but I’m definitely going to check it out as my next show (after I finish sopranos). 🤔🤔🤔. Need to watch that
@JunebugPresents10 ай бұрын
@steveskonntent I first watched it when it was in production, S1 E2 after its original air date. I just happen to catch the episode halfway through. When an incident occurred involving police brutality and the neighborhood gave the police hell for it, I made sure I tuned it for the next episode on June 16, 2002. Since then, I was hooked. I started dating a woman a year later, and when we hung out on Sunday nights, she would watch The Practice, which I refused to watch. I was spoiled by HBO and stopped watching public TV shows. Afterward, I would watch The Wire Season 2, and she refused to watch, thinking it was just ghetto. She would just overhear me watching it. This went on for a few Sundays, and each Sunday, she would find herself being invested more and more from a distance. She finally joined me to watch, and then she was hooked. She soon got a Netflix subscription when they were only sending DVDs, and she binge-watched the first season on her own just to keep up. The show had this effect on people, even its biggest doubters. Funny, we were friends with a German couple, journalists, who stayed in the NYC while reporting for their German publications. They asked us for shows to watch and we recommended The Wire. A month or so later, we went to their apartment for dinner, and the wife was wearing The Wire t-shirt. Instant fans, even though they had trouble with the slang. And even though the Emmy's ignored them, they were awarded the Peabody award. It ranks No. 1 on most lists of the greatest TV show of all time. I hope you get to watch it. Btw, I loved Succession. I knew from the trailers that it is a show I have to watch, and it didn't disappoint when it originally aired on June 3rd, 2018. It was a great replacement for Game of Thrones, which was ending a year later, and Homeland, which only had one season left. Now, I'm not watching anything. I look forward to the next great series.

You need to practice reading your scripts more. Maybe a lot more. You sound tense and nervous. Like you're worried, which is the wrong emotion.
