@@maxmustermann1533 Def sounds like a contradiction, but try watching an actual professional match. While all you'll notice are the big torsos when they enter the ring, pay attention to their thighs once the match starts. You'll see the just how much muscle there is underneath the fat. Their legs are like tree trunks. And the fights are really quite amazing to watch.

This video is a good reminder of how looks aren't everything when it comes to health; and how it's not just bodyfat percentage or fat levels but distribution of it when we determine what is optimal for health. One thing the video doesn't mention is how part of this is due to workout methods of sumo wrestlers. Since most of their workouts are anaerobic rather than aerobic and similar to HIIT, their bodies burn fat rather than carbs while also building muscle which then burns more fat! It also doesn't mention how sumo wrestlers have very good diets which are low in carbohydrates & sugars! We definitely are learning more about different body functions and everyone has different genetical makeups; but it's good to see more information which are breaking down myths while allowing us to design better workout & nutrition plans for everyone!

When something is injected that the body normally produces on its own naturally at a certain level, the body tries to compensate by reducing the amount that it produces to go back to the normal balance. This is why people that inject steroids and hormones go nuts and is a major factor for suicide in body builders and trans people. Their bodies internal regulatory systems are completely thrown off.

One thing though is that sumo wrestlers are generally way taller than average Japanese people, with those in the upper ranks being a minimum of 6 feet tall. Taller people average shorter lifespans in general regardless of their history. Okinawan centenarians who live to be over 100 years are always very short, typically 5 feet or less, and same with Jeanne Calment (lived to 122 years at 4'11), Sara Knauss (lived to 119 at 4'7), and all other verified centenarians across the world. A 20% shorter lifespan than some of the longest-living people in the world for people so tall isn't so bad. Not one of those who religiously defends the health of sumo wrestlers and don't think that's a lifestyle even remotely optimizing longevity, but just want to put things in a relative context.

@@wiishikari Chiyonofuji unfortunately died prematurely though at 61 of cancer. He's my fave Yokozuna as well. To my understanding, cancer tends to be a most common cause of death for sumo wrestlers and that's different from typical deaths resulting from metabolic obesity like cardiovascular disease and type-2 diabetes. It's something that tends to be a high risk for tall people in general, like many of the tallest basketball players who unfortunately died prematurely in their 60s.

I do my own sumo workout in where I do some of the exercises, in particular the shikos and suriachi. And they freakishly strengthen your legs, and they help you with balance and flexibility. The training that these guys do is incredibly hard that is why despite their size they are more flexible than the average human being. Sometimes I do what I call the sumo squat where I squat down and stand on the balls of my feet, and I at times get people asking me how I do that or does it hurt. You could get healthy with sumo exercises, but don't do the sumo diet if you have no plans of a sumo career.

Exercise is certainly a key component, but i think the main reason is diet. They have some of the healthiest and most nutritious diets in the planet - and they simply get so big because they eat such large quantities of that healthy food. However, being big still puts a strain on your heart and organs as they work to maintain such a large body, leading to the shortened lifespan effect. It’s similar for ppl who are 7+ ft tall, even those that’re active and healthy

Absolutely not. They may be healthier than most obese individuals but that doesn't mean much. It's still very harmful, and the fact that sumo wrestlers die earlier than the average Japanese (which is even being said in the video) proves the point even further. Let's assume they can dodge diabetes and high cholesterol conditions... 1.The immense of amount of food their body has to go through and digest puts pressure on their stomach, intestines, heart and other organs which damages them on the long run and organ failure becomes more likely. 2.Their heart has to pump harder in order to nourish their gaint body with enough oxygen which causes the heart to age way faster and heart failure is more likely to appear sooner. 3. Human joints and bones have not evolved to support such immense weight and so they wear off faster. Although some people have a stronger skeleton than others they still have a limit.

@@y4rr4kherif2 In entire agreement with you but in a relative context, that's still quite a good average lifespan for people who maintained such an enormous size for years. Another thing I don't see people mentioning often is height. Sumo wrestlers are way taller than average Japanese, having to be a minimum of 5'7 and any successful ones typically being over 6 feet tall. Tall people don't tend to live as long whether they're basketball players or sumo wrestlers (not saying sumo is as healthy as basketball, mind you, but just want to point out the height factor as a contributor).

@@y4rr4kherif2 The lesson I like to take from sumo wrestlers is not that sumo wrestlers are healthy in an absolute sense (again in total agreement with you), but the importance of physical activity in at least relatively improving our health. I used to be a PT coaching obese Americans struggling with weight loss, and I liked to use the sumo wrestler not as a motivational example to stay large (the goal is to still to lose excess weight), but to motivate more exercise/training on top of improved nutrition. Even modest exercise can help burn and prevent further accumulation of the most dangerous visceral and especially liver fat to my understanding. So I like to use sumo wrestlers as a temporary form of body positivity, not in the sense of being content with a heavier body but to help people struggling with weight loss from feeling hopelessly depressed about their long-term health in their weight loss journeys.

There's a traditional sport in Switzerland with a very similar rule set called Schwingen. It's interesting how almost every culture developed some form of wrestling completely independent from each other.

@Fire Heart Are you stupid? I don't know if you're saying this is because it's some sumo tradition or some crap like that (even if it is, why should anyone else know that) but if you're saying they can't because they're too old and weak, that's ridiculous. Having a huge diet without working out is only gonna make it worse than if they didn't even try.

I have a few honest questions regarding sumo wrestlers. Is a lot of their weight also a lot of muscle mass underneath? How are their bones and joints conditions especially with the stomping excercises? Do they have stretch marks or potentially sagging skin? Can they change their body when they retire back to average?

I have a few honest questions regarding sumo wrestlers. Is a lot of their weight also a lot of muscle mass underneath? Yes absolutely How are their bones and joints conditions especially with the stomping excercises? Joints are at risk esp in those men who have genetic arthritis. Bones if anything would be stronger than average Do they have stretch marks or potentially sagging skin? Yes and yes potentially. It all depends on their bmi. The more the bmi, the greater the risk of loose skin. Can they change their body when they retire back to average? Yes (mostly). Only risk is some loose skin. It all depends on their bmi. The more the bmi, the greater the risk of loose skin.

Ironically that to a much lesser degree is how I approached fitness. I never dieted, just worked out hard since wrestling in high school was intense. Coincidentally I did end up being the lightest I ever been in my life. Granted the exercise portion has been on and off since then.. However, next crack I get at consistent workouts, I'll try what I did before, no diet just working like a mofo and see what happens. I understand I won't get the sick abs but at the same time, life for mewouldn't be enjoyable under a diet

A sumo wrestler will never eat a donut like that on the video. The other key of their health is in their diet. Differently from obese americans, sumo wrestlers get 7000 calories of a healthy diet, no excess of sugar, no sodas, no alcohol, or refined products. Instead they base their diet on fish, meat and vegetables, so they become much healthier fat people

I seen thier workouts including flexibility , weights/strength, cardio, and things said in this video improving thier sumio skills. They also eat a lot ,but it mostly health food in small poshions ,but they need to gain the mass so they time out the big poshions they eat. They should be able to wean off the food poshions for retired or injured sumo wrestlers and have them stay active exercising with in there doing in this due to injury or not having such a big massive body and calories to fuel that mess up body. To reduce the retired or injured sumo wrestlers geting health problems.
