I imagine with her living a life where she has little to no control she becomes the most protective of what control she does have. She won't give it up, not even for friends unless she deems it necessary to do so. Examples being, she struggles in school, has presumably no real food in her diet, no friends, and struggles against authority. She's the perfect candidate to say no to a presence that promises control and safety. I'm rooting for her in future chapters, even if it's against me the player. My personal theory is that it has something to do with the Guts stat (maybe it's a stat measuring the amount of control that character has? Like some sort of opposite to the trance stat), mostly due to the actual statistics relating to that particular stat; Kris (Chapter 1): 1 Kris (Chapter 2, aka after the first time they pull their soul out): 2 Kris (post-Chapter 2): 2 Susie (Chapter 1): 2 Susie (Chapter 2): 2 Susie (post-Chapter 2): 2 Ralsei (both chapters): 0 Noelle: 0 Edit: I just remember Spamton's line about us having guts when we decline his deal, pretty interesting if you ask me. Edit 2: Found it, it happens when you accept his deal rather then declining it like I misremembered it being; "NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING AB04T! YOU GOT [Guts] KID!! my idea as to how Susie is able to resist the soul is simply because of her will power. Noelle and ralsei are both kind, timid, and some might even say weak willed. Susie on the other hand is abrasive, seen as a bully, and goes against authority, which is basically the opposite of the other two party members we've had up until now. And what happens to the weak willed party members? they get controlled and forced into doing what Kris wants, and in Noelle's case even getting forced into murdering a childhood friend. But Susie, the only headstrong party member we've had so far, is never forced into doing bad things simply because the soul can't get enough control over her in order to make her.

I’m going to put this out there, and I want to know what you think : I think that the message of Deltarune is to bring attention to the completely unnatural level of control the protagonist has over other party members in RPG’s. Toby’s always been one to have messages like that, that bring attention to parts of games that are strange, over looked, or ‘evil’. Undertale was about a lot of things, but also about how we as the player have SO much control over a game, and how slaughtering an entire species might have consequences that are other looked in other games. You can see what I mean in just the first 2 chapters of Deltarune, Susie disregards our instructions, sure, but it’s setting a message, bringing attention to the “control” aspect. We can see this more obviously in chapter 2, more specifically SNOWGRAVE. The way we manipulate someone into committing those atrocities, it’s terrifying, and this level of CONTROL we as the player, and the main character have is frankly inhumane, and even if we do the right thing with this CONTROL, we are still changing things, this isn’t OUR world, and we can’t be a part of it, at least not naturally. Imagine reading all that, haha Well, tell me what you think.

I'm glad people are starting to realize just how important it is that Susie goes out of her way to resist us, from refusing to be part of the party in Ch1, to little quirks like her not taking a crappy armor. _Especially_ when you consider Noelle, where on Snowgrave there are literally moments where you make her black out and take direct control. If that's the final goal of Snowgrave, how do we deal with a character who embodies the exact opposite of control?
@furrykittens93122 жыл бұрын
I actually don't think I've ever heard this interpretation of the Snowgrave route before but I really like it. My initial reaction, probably from Genocide, is that the point is to "trick" the game into letting us do horrible things to get stronger even when enemies normally flee, but the mode really does focus much more on the psychology of control and its impact on Noelle than anything else. This seems very consistent with the theme of Deltarune; in ordinary playthroughs, we learn to coexist with a quirky team and their desires, but in Snowgrave we use every trick in the book to break down our party's will to resist us.
@forkgodsdescendant25032 жыл бұрын
I’ve always thought of an snowgrave/weird route endgame scenario where the soul would have complete control over Noelle if the it possesses her. Like it leaving kris in favor of a superior vessel. But unlike Kris, Noelle’s identity gets destroyed in the process because something about her makes her much more susceptible to full control. Plus her severely unstable mental state. It’s to the point where she loses consciousness over these factors. After that, Noelle is basically dead, serving as a powerful living corpse. The blank white eyes she has while using snowgrave becomes permanent. Without the soul, she’s just an empty vessel. But in doing this, the result is the player being able to defeat the titans using solely her powers with comparably lesser effort than the normal route. It ensures everyone else’s safety in hometown because no other lightener has to fight, since Noelle was overpowering the Titans on her own before they can cause much damage. Weird Route ends up being a “the ends justifies the means.” thing. The Prophecy’s Heroes do nothing to fight, yet the world is easily saved from the apocalyptic event. It all went by as if not much happened. At the lone expense of their friend Noelle. And the Darkener murder. The world was saved yet rather than feeling relief, fulfillment, they felt cold. What a weird thing to feel for their lives being saved. A fun twist would be Ralsei being in agreement with it, then accepting the method because it is a guranteed safe way to protect the lighteners. (this is based on all the suspicion about him) Making him oppose stopping what’s happening to Noelle. Which causes to Susie rebel. After is a much more serious falling out in the party mirroring chapter 1. Except Susie sees herself as the good guy this time. If the goner vessel comes into play, the human, monster, and dark prince hero trio can still be fulfilled even if the originals bailed out. It will be the complete opposite of a climactic fight with all the lightener and darkener allies in the normal route. All that happens is the the vessel just stands there, completely unarmed, wearing the simple greyed out casual light world outfit, commanding Noelle as she shreds the titans apart with relative ease. All Ralsei needed to do was watch and be there for the moment or whatever. He then goes: “We did it. guess...” after they win. And fulfill his life’s purpose. More akin to a typical rpg grind to defeat the world ending boss threat. Another interesting possibility is if a few major characters have to die sacrificing themselves to defeat the titans in the normal route. And in contrast, they all live in the weird route as all the burden is on Noelle. To make our moral compasses go more haywire. Weird Route is the Cold, Brutal, but Effective, and Efficient route.

@BrixVGM2 жыл бұрын
I feel like the SOUL doesn't literally have control powers in this sense; We can control kris because we literally are their soul, and we 'control' noelle by psychologically manipulating them; not via some magic or nature of the SOUL itself. We can't control susie because we aren't possessing them and the game never gives us the option to manipulate them psychologically, mainly because we don't really have any way to do that. I'd argue the only reason we're able to manipulate Noelle at all is because of the nature of the Weird Route, at least in my interpretation. It'd take too long to really put into words what I think the Weird route actually *is* but TLDR i think the Weird Route is going to be defined as us abusing a loophole in the universe's "rules"; for Chapter 2, we end up using the fact that Noelle's iceshock spell actually lets us kill enemies without them running away; by abusing this loophole we're able to accomplish something the 'universe' never 'intended'; a genocide route. By doing this 'unexpected' and 'impossible' action, we break the game; we make a choice that actually matters. In chapter 2's case, it's that we're able to manipulate Noelle and irreversibly change her by doing something she was never 'supposed' to do, and Berdly is seemingly dead. TLDR I dont think the SOUL has some kind of magical control that it applies to those around it; We can *Manipulate* Noelle but we can't outright control her (And really I think this is only possible because the Weird Route ends up breaking the 'intended' sequence of events and seems to kinda break the universe; the cutscene where Ralsei is thrown off by the lack of the Ferris wheel cutscene shows this), We can control Kris (Because we're literally possessing them), but we have zero control over Susie or Ralsei in any meaningful way outside of Kris telling them what to do in battle because we simply have no means to control them, it's simple as that.

The dialogue when Kris is down and the very end of the S:SNEO fight seem to contradict you though, as Noelle is "still able to hear their voice" when Kris is downed, and while Kris is crying out to everyone else at the end of Spamton's fight nobody responds, but the first time we call Noelle it specifies "*You* called out to Noelle" and she responds immediately. This wouldn't be odd, but in the other 4 examples, the flavor text specifies that *Kris* is the one calling for help.

@@-ZH It contradicts them because were it to just be normal manipulation Noelle would then not be able to hear Us and instead it would specify that she hears Kris. The fact it specifies she hears Us and not Kris seems to imply that the Soul is using some form of magic on her otherwise it would come from Kris' body or voice and when he is downed she would not be able to heed to our control anymore since she could no longer hear the commands given through Kris' body.
@BrixVGM2 жыл бұрын
@@tedtubegaming I agree that Noelle is hearing the SOUL's voice in those moments; I just don't think the SOUL has some magical influence over them. She's definitely listening to the SOUL's voice; hence why she can 'still hear their voice' (Because we're the ones selecting their actions from the menu; not Kris) As for how she shows up quickly, Note that we never try calling Noelle earlier; The real wierd thing about that scene is how she can hear you even though we're whispering, but I'd chalk that up to the SOUL being able to project it's voice to Noelle; not to the soul having some kind of magic mind grip on her or whatever. Like, we're able to manipulate noelle by *manipulating* her. We *convince* her and *peer pressure* her to do the things we want her to do via manipulation. We manage to convince her that all we're doing is Getting Stronger. That's the main reason I find it hard to believe that the SOUL has some kind of extra influence; Why use psychological manipulation tactics to deceive someone into doing the things we want when you (supposedly) can just innately make them do things? The only time I can think of where we wrestle with control in any meaningful way with Kris (While we're still possessing them) is if we attempt to drop our Dark World inventory (the ball of junk) in the light world; But even then we don't have to employ any sort of convincing or anything, we just do it twice and Kris agrees to it.
@MoRPho1512 жыл бұрын
@@BrixVGM I agree. I think that in the beginning she goes with it because she trusts Kris, and the things we ask her to do are not so bad, or she thinks is necesary to become stronger, and become stronger is something good. But later, thigs ascend more and more, and she even thinks in killing Kris or get rid of Kris because she starts suspecting that something is off with them. But at that time, she is so inmersed in our control that she feels powerless (ironically) and she obeys even if she doesn´t want to, normally she can´t say no, and with us inside Kris she feels so afraid that she does anything we say. Noelle just points, apparently mimicking Kris, but doesn't seem to be listening to Kris. It's as if Susie is actually listening to Kris themselves(or she thinks it's them anyway...) speaking and then follows that ACTion, whereas for everyone else, completing the will of the soul just comes naturally to them. Or maybe I'm overanalyzing the hell out of this and they just wanted the Harem Protagonist brush-off animation for Susie because it's fitting.

I'd almost even consider questioning of authority as a factor (as the way some seem to perceive the player's commands as a voice separate of Kris if Kris cannot speak at the moment [getting downed by Berdly in the snowgrave route] that they have to follow as normal), but Susie does hold high respect towards Toriel, the only exception to her rebellious attitude towards any orders, not to mention rude being her form of magic somehow Her own refusal to listen might make her not only able to ignore player commands, but to even ignore the rules of the game itself (not following commands until late chapter 1, even then only by her own choosing to consider listening, forcibly learning to act on her own, being the one to initiate the conversation post Spamton fight as if the game and characters would otherwise keep acting like nothing happened, like Ralsei himself tries to brush off) Maybe it's not just a matter of resisting the SOUL, but her ignoring the rules in which we interact with the game (Yeah idk wtf I'm talking about either)
@uncroppedsoop2 жыл бұрын
Even past all that, the reason she shows respect toward Toriel is because Kris is on good terms with their mom, so Susie would assume that she's a reasonable person, therefore lowering her guard. I don't really think Ralsei is not strong enough to resist us, in fact in both chapters he seems to be a director to try to guide the whole story. He even knows our name even though we never mentioned it anywhere. In fact, I guess all members we control, except Kris, are capable of resisting our order. But Noelle was confused when entering the cyber dark world and had always been manipulated by her mother, so it makes sense that she has no idea what to do and hopes her childhood friend Kris will help her. Ralsei, like what I have mentioned, is trying to guide the story to follow a script that we don't know, so he chooses to follow us. However, in both cases, Noelle and Ralsei do have the ability to resist us, they just decided not to. Many hints show us that Susie doesn't have a good family life, and there seems no one cares about her (we don't find Susie's home in Hometown, Susie didn't call her family when invited to stay with Kris and Toriel. And she hasn't eaten real food before entering the card kingdom dark world) so we can imagine she must have always been fighting for her life and no matter how confused she is, she must make their own decision. So this would make a lot more sense that Susie will resist us until she finally recognized Kris as her friend and just make her own decision in case she is not happy to follow our order.

Even if Ralsei is unaware of the player's existence, he said himself that Darkners exist for the sole purpose of aiding Lightners and making them happy. He also initially sees Kris and Susie as his heroes, and the ones from his prophecy, so he would be likely idolizing them and being unnaturally trusting of a stranger. Ralsei also happens to be trusting and optimistic by nature, so he wouldn't be likely to oppose us. We are able to manipulate Noelle to the extreme probably because she has incredible capabilities with her ice spells, which could change the outcome of the story (actually killing Darkners instead of them running away). Ralsei doesn't have any abilities like this, so anything Kris can tell him to do would be in his nature anyways.

One of the reasons that I find get's overlooked with Noelle's trust in the snowgrave route, is her naivety towards the dark world. As we've seen with Rudy, her closest experience to the dark world was her video games. When most people play a game for the first time, they tend to be quite trusting and flexible with the advice given by existing players. Even if that player uses their naivety to troll with them (as Kris likely would anyways). In short, if Noelle considers her "dream" to follow video game logic, then she has a reason to trust Kris to the extent that she does and only faltering when she realizes that they've taken it too far.

Personal theory: The resistance of characters is involved with the Guts stat, which all party members so far have had. If true, this means that, since Kris' Guts increases to 2 at the end of Ch. 2, we'll be seeing them be a lot more resistant to us. What this means for the future, who can say, but... it's interesting, to say the least. This is also supported by Susie having 2 Guts, and Noelle having 0 Guts. Or maybe that's just the mechanical reflection of character development...

Hell, even at the end of Chapter 2, when she's talking to Noelle in Queen's Castle and in the ferris wheel, she still blatantly ignores our choices. She agreed to follow Kris' orders in battle, but her allegiance is still more to Kris than to us, the player.

My theory for why Ralsei can resist our control is because of his glasses. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk
@emberthefox49512 жыл бұрын
Similar points are also used in my theory on this. I believe that the player has little direct control on anyone other than Kris, and is moreso giving a suggestion with mild controlling abilities. I also don't believe that Ralsei is aware of the soul's power, and instead listens due to how he feels every party member should have a specific role, as seen in the Sweet Cap'n Cakes battle with his refusal to learn R-Action. Since Kris is the leader, he believes they should have the control and listens to their suggestions without question. Noelle, as stated here, trusts Kris due to her trust in them not doing anything wrong, and later a trance. Susie doesn't trust Kris early on, so she doesn't take their suggestions. After the Lancer fight, she decides to start listening to Kris unless there's something else she'd rather do or finds obvious.

Something that you guys didn’t mention in the video is that if you give her an item like a weapon or armor, if you try to take it off later she won’t let you and will say “Hey, hands off!” Being the only person to deny your control even in the menus. Also when you try to put something on her that is weaker than the weapon she currently has, for example switching the jevils knife for something like her mane axe, she will say “I’m too good for that” or something along those lines

It seems like Susie has lived a life that treated her really badly, maybe bad parents, a lack of friends, a bitter and spiteful attitude are all because of a central Lack of control and stability in every aspect of her life. She's incredibly self-determined because she has had no one to trust but herself, she's her own ultimate authority and leader- to the point she disregards anything and everyone who threatens to strip her of self control or challenge (most of) her opinions. Even if she has a soft spot for the people around her now, I would still expect her to always have that defiance and intense challenge and spitefulness towards authority; particularly the malicious kind, or harassment of people she likes alot such as Noel. I mean I find it very interesting when I think about it, that in the Snowgrave route it was completely danced around with Susie that Noel was being coercively abused by Kris into doing vile things for them, I mean after Susie busted into her room in the Queen's castle and we were stuck with Raleigh, Noel never incriminated Kris whatsoever for being a monster, So Susie (at least in that route) is completely in the dark about the malicious and vile side Kris can show to people he *_really_* wants wrapped around his fingers. I'm hoping at some point that if the route descions you make in these early chapters directly start affecting the events of the next chapters, rather than giving you the choice to be nice or awful. And maybe we can see Susie become the counteracting force to Kris' abuse, but I also see Noel becoming a completely brainwashed and hollow puppet for him as well if it continues on. I mean, I think Birdky might be dead in this route seeing as he never woke up, so I kinda just am assuming that this chapter was the start of permanent consequences affecting the world.

I have a really big feeling that Susie fights against Kris / Us in the last chapter. But she will in every route. In the normal route, i think there will be a scene where kris wants to go back home but susie wants to stay in the dark world with her friends, so she fights against kris. But in the weird route, she fights against us because we are evil. That again implieing that our choices. Dont. Matter. No matter what we do we will get this fight against Susie, at least thats what i think

Honestly, i think there is much more to susie than we think. Do remember that Clam Girl in undertale? She spoke about a "suzy", and in the following updates they become black and white like a gaster follower and say " the time to meet her.... its fast aproaching". And clam girl before turning has stated before that its because of "suzy" that frisk might be there So its highly likely that she is the reason Frisk, Chara and us are in undertale to begin with!
@helpfulDeathgod2 жыл бұрын
Another possibility is taking into account that Susie is technically mentioned by one of the Gaster Followers in Undertale. Specifically, the very rarely acknowledged Clam Girl, who had a dialogue change when the Switch Version of Undertale came out. She mentions having a daughter about Frisk's age, her name is Suzy, and we're "about to meet her soon." Which, at the time, was 2 months before Deltarune was announced. Not saying she's related to _Gaster,_ but she could have some kind of connection to _Him._ :) After all, it's not our story.

This makes me thing deeply about our recent information of how Susie backed off from Kriss when they were in the classroom and Susie spouted that thing about how Kriss mother would abandon them. The reply from Kriss made Susie ran away, very fast as per Noelle's words. Could it be that Susie really doesn't have any control over herself when Kriss is in their "creepy mode"? Kriss opening violently the locker where Noelle was hiding and closing it off slowly makes me think that Kriss was in that mode, but that's from events before Kriss becomes overtaken by us, the player, later on.

Susie does not obey us because she doesn’t want to. It’s as simple as that. They say they will only fight, so they will only fight, and in the lift, they say they will stop fighting, because they have a lot more faith in our actions.

Also Ralsei is just very "Darkner's purpose is to serve Lightners" and doesn't even know what being himself is in the boat scene, he thinks it's just how Darkners are supposed to act, bound by the Will of Lightner. Something that someone like Spamton is aware of, but can't accet and tries to escape by getting his own Will and become a big shot. That, and also the fact that Ralsei is one of the only character along Gaster who thinks the Player's choice do matter.

I doubt the soul has the power to control others. Comparing our control over kris to our control over noelle isn’t right, we manipulated noelle because she is a pushover. We control Kris because our soul is in him. The question is, what if our soul was put into another person?

I mean, Susie’s the only party member who has the RUDE element. She’s rebellious as all hell, and in chapter 1 she’s literally a bully. Susie only decides to abide by the soul because she’s friends with Kris, she doesn’t even acknowledge the soul. Ralsei is genuinely innocent, easily able to be manipulated. Noelle is similar, but she’s too scared to disobey you. Susie’s the only outlier, She’s rebellious as all hell. She was a bully in chapter 1, and is probably stronger than the soul in chapter 2. Kris could TECHNICALLY considered an outlier like Susie, but Kris is the one we have control over for like 97% of the game. Plus most of the time we’re helping Kris, we got them to be friends with Susie, and it seems like Kris genuinely LIKES Susie as well, even outside of our control. They don’t seem to like Ralsei all that much outside our control, and they might be friends with Noelle, but it’s a much looser link than the with Susie. They only break our control at the end of the chapter because they get stressed out from being controlled probably, wanting to choose for themselves a bit. They’re the only other person that disobeys us besides Susie, but Kris is less willing because we’re kind of giving them what they want.

genuinely honestly this is a theory that completely made me draw a blank on my thoughts for a second. that's how dumb it is. susie is able to "resist our control" because there is no control in the first place, the soul isn't a dictator of what other people do. it manipulates noelle into complying with its demands further than what she deems acceptable because she generally doesn't have the strong heart or willpower to say no. ralsei complies with the soul on his own because ralsei accepts kris as the leader and lets them make the decisions for the party. i'm of the opinion that ralsei probably doesn't know the full extent of what the soul really is, he just knows that it's there, not that it's an otherworldly, unpredictable spirit. there's no intimidation or fear factor, ralsei just complies because kris is the leader and he trusts them with the party's general decision-making. susie, while yes, she is a unique case, doesn't have any special powers or whatever. she just refuses to take orders. at the end of the day, both ralsei and noelle both took kris's orders voluntarily, albeit noelle had to be pressured for a few of them. susie just doesn't. simple as. there's no exceptional strength of will on the soul's part, she just doesn't want to because that's how she rolls. there's nothing special about her.

Parts where a player's actions in a game can contradict the player character's personality have sometimes made me think about how that kind of thing would effect the character if they knew they were being controlled or if they didn't know why they did those things & therefore didn't have anyone to blame but themselves but I never considered the idea that a game could be made that actually focuses on both of those things. The weird thing about being able to dodge in the Susie fight despite having no control over her actions is that it seemingly means the souls bound itself to Susie in some way during that part but it still couldn't control her. But was it literally inside her? If so, when & how did it get there? How did it get back out & how did she not know about it.

The red soul have the ability to command other players and can manifest through them in some way (Ralsei said that was Kris only type of power), but it don’t necessarily means that the red soul literally controls all of the members of the party. Influence by commanding and control are two different things. Noelle couldn’t say no to anyone.... she couldn’t say no to the teacher, to Berdly, to her mom... I don’t think that being able to influence Noelle proves that we can control other characters. Ralsei has the purpose of serve the lightners, and he obeys Kris in anything, specially Kris. But it could be only because he is willing to, due to his absolute faith in the prophecy. I think everyone could have the power to reveal to us, and maybe this is related to the element and stats of “rudeness” or “guts” that Susie has. For me is purely Will power.

This was never a question for me, we don’t control anyone except kris (and asriel if you buy into the Jaruverse). Ralsei chooses to go along with kris’ orders (he is aware of the player). Noelle chooses to listen to kris orders (she is new to battling, inexperienced, and trusts kris.) of course noelle would be liable to manipulation. Susie, while she trusts us, she sees us as an equal. If she doesn’t feel like following an order she thinks is stupid, she won’t. In conclusion, we can only control kris, the other people are following our orders indirectly, they think kris is the one calling the shots (other than probably ralsei).

I think that as time goes on, Susie will become less and less rebellious as she spends more time around the soul. If you look at the ferris wheel scene, her first thought when she isn't sure what to do is that we would know what to do, even if she brushes that off pretty quickly. Going into a bit of speculation, maybe after enough time all of our party members will start experiencing symptoms similar to Noelle in the snowgrave route, becoming more reliant on the player and able to hear the Player's voice distinct from Kris'. I'm thinking that maybe snowgrave was just a highly accelerated version of what's going to happen to all our party members eventually, minus the murder.
