Cleaning plastic in the ocean is just one step, we have to do our part as well. Edit : What is a permaculture? A permaculture is creating a forest on your property, but a forest designed to produce food, medicine, to attract thousands of beneficial insects and improve soil health in the process. The concept of permaculture is to create a loop system, to be as eco-friendly as humanly possible, generating no waste product whatsoever and not using any kind of chemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides, etc. Every serious permaculture also have homemade compost station and few chickens, for eggs and compost material. There are many branches to permaculture, some permacultures are very tidy and looks more like a big garden, while others have a much wilder approach, where its literally a dense jungle of medicine, food and flowers : it is known as a food forest. Some permacultures are extremely strict with only planting native species, while others go with Hybrids for specific berries, fruits, veggies, nuts, herbs etc... But I must warn you, its insanely addictive once you start a project like this, it might literally change your life. It completely fixed my depression problems, and just this summer I lost 20 pounds cuz I ate so healthy, my own organic food... and worked on my little property everyday having fun. You really don't need to be on a farm to start a project like this btw.

@@noodlenate The difference I notice is: A majority of trash The Ocean Cleanup is pulling out Pacific Garbage Patch seems to be more marine debris related than your average Liquor Store debris you find on the city streets that find their way into our waterways and eventually into the ocean. I admit I am not an expert but I used to be under the impression that the Pacific Garbage Patch was mostly city based debris/plastics. Thank you for plucking trash out of your river!!

TOC is a nonprofit, but their staff and workers have to make a living -- they aren't doing this for free. They probably get their funding through various methods similar to other nonprofits -- government partnerships (i.e. each Interceptor deployment is paid for by the city government that hosts the Interceptor in its local waterway), supporter donations, etc. At this scale, I guarantee their full-time staff are all paid. Something this size can't run purely on volunteer effort. Though yes, no monetary gains in the sense of a for-profit business.

I wish you would contribute to this project, it cannot be the sole responsibility of consumers in developing countries to cleanup waste created (at least partly) by your plastic products (no matter how delicious their contents might be).

A couple years ago, TOC started offering some online merch made with recycled plastic from their clean-ups, though I'm pretty sure that's primarily a PR/awareness thing since it looks like they get a lot of their funding from partnering with local government agencies. I've read that UV exposure significantly degrades the performance of materials recycled into next-generation products, meaning a lot of the older plastic fished out of the ocean (stuff that's years to decades old) would be even worse to recycle and repurpose than normal recyclable plastic materials. I'm just a guy who reads stuff on the Internet, but I would guess TOC has negotiated strategic partnerships with companies that will buy certain sorted plastics off of TOC by the ton. I've seen secondary material pricing anywhere from $30 to $200 per ton. It just wouldn't be cost effective for a non-profit with core competencies in cleaning plastic trash out of waterways to operate its own processing plant. Much more affordable to outsource that to a company specializing in it that can achieve better economies of scale. Plastic recycling is pretty low value per unit weight, meaning you have to go big to not go broke running it.

You can Google some of the initial criticisms and concerns people had about this, years ago. TOC commissioned a study on environmental impact to assess ecosystem risks from their projects, I think it was. It's been a while since I read it. But yeah, they appear to have 1) included staff/observers specifically tasked to monitor sea life impact, and 2) built in mechanisms to mitigate that impact, like towing the net at a slow enough speed that fish can easily swim away from the trash in the collection net, larger openings for larger sea life to dip out through the bottom (b/c plastic floats to the top), etc.

This is great to see that Josh is working well for the first few weeks in the water. I love to see all that plastic coming onboard the boat. I have been curious have you been able to determine how old some of the plastic is that you are recovering is? Is it 20 years old or older, or relatively more resent stuff you are getting? How long before you will be able to deploy a second system either to GPGP or to one of the other garbage patches around the world? I have been following Boyan since his Ted Talk years ago and thought this was a great idea, I am so happy to see it become a reality.
