Here I prefer another perspective, the Chinese Communist Party is the biggest disaster in the world, we in Taiwan are facing 276 times the enemy country, and surviving is one of the hopes. This is a crime that has never been seen in the history of mankind, and the number of people it has killed needs to be counted in billions, the existence of the world's public enemy. Personally, I think Taiwan is a lucky country, we had at least 50 years of happy life, albeit under the shadow of war. Although Taiwanese people are very benign and are subjected to political frauds, they can still be happy nowadays with the welfare of the times and the openness and transparency of public affairs. My country Asia - 36,000 square kilometers - 23.5 million people - second highest population density in the world - 2/3 of the land is covered by high mountains - 285 mountains over 3,000 meters; using modern computer tools, the president is under the watchful eye of the entire nation, and each eligible citizen, in person, with a notification letter and a valid ID card, decides on a one-person, one-vote basis, and may be able to take a look. In order to check the government's ability to carry out passport applications, including transportation using 6 hours, a long time ago, perhaps only half the time used, which is the use of the maximum time cost calculation. It’s very important to note that Lee Teng-hui, the president that gave Taiwan its democracy was later renounced by Kuomintang. Higher ranking Kuomintang members , even those born in Taiwan never saw Taiwan as their homeland. It’s even common for retired Kuomintang generals to attend CCP ceremonies. For many Taiwanese the battle for democracy is now at a new high, as Chinese info warfare and Kuomintang/Minchungtang uses the freedom of speech to constantly downplay the threat of the CCP and paint DPP as “warmongering and wasting resources” for standing up to Chinese threats. We might live in a peaceful democracy now, but we won’t be anymore if we lose to the appeasement/unitist ideology. And it will affect all of you too, if China ever felt like it’s confident enough they can take Taiwan without losing its internal stability, they most likely will. And the world will burn.

If anyone is interested in Taiwan’s history, I highly recommend the TV series Three Tears in Borneo (Mandarin title: 聽海湧). It offers a perspective on the experiences of Taiwanese people during World War II. At that time, many Taiwanese were recruited to fight for Japan. After Japan’s defeat, Taiwanese citizens were placed under the rule of the Republic of China (ROC). Another excellent depiction of Taiwan’s history can be found in the film A City of Sadness, directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien. The movie portrays significant historical events, such as the 228 Incident and the White Terror period, showing how Taiwanese people experienced the transition from Japanese colonial rule to the ROC administration.

The US could learn from Taiwan's voting and vote-counting process, which I consider the most fair and efficient. Voters are required to vote in person and present their ID. Voting is conducted using paper ballots, with no mail-in voting. During vote counting, all of the country's 10,000+ counting stations are open to the public and media, allowing for recording or live streaming for transparency. Each ballot is held up by the counting staff and read aloud in front of the crowd, leaving no room for doubt. Nearly 15,000,000 ballots are counted within approximately 3-4 hours, with the results known by the evening of the election day.

Taiwan has been de facto independent since it democratized. There's a practicality in keeping the R.O.C. moniker intact. If the people of Taiwan can be allowed freedom and prosperity to live their lives as they choose, that is ALL THAT MATTERS.

This is perhaps controversial but one of things I'll point out to my communist friends, is that while soviet backed dictatorships rarely ended until they were forcibly overthrown and broke ties with the USSR, cold War Era US backed dictatorships rarely lasted more than a generation or two (Taiwan, South Korea, Brazil, Greece) and were generally just stop gaps to keep communists out of power until such a standard of living was established for the majority that communism would no longer be a viable electoral alternative.

Although there was a significant number of illiterate individuals within the Kuomintang (KMT) army, this does not mean that their officials and the refugees who came to Taiwan with them were also illiterate. Former Princeton University economics professor Gregory C. Chow pointed out that the highly educated intellectual elites who followed the KMT to Taiwan after 1949 were the true driving force behind Taiwan's economic miracle.

Not really, while it is true Chiang Ching-Kuo decides to democratize so the party can survive, since KMT rule in Taiwan was facing ever stronger challenge internationally and domestically. But the mainlander and their descendants don't see it that way, they still wish to cling on to the old ways for as long as it can last. Luckily Lee Teng-hui, Chiang's successor, was a shrewd politician that managed to only sideline the old guards and controls the party and military ensuring his ability to push for changes. So Lee's action led to KMT's survival, yet he was eventually kick out of the party he saved.

@@lyhthegreat Absolutely. What the video didn't mentioned for time constrain was the amount of political intrigue that goes on during his tenure as president. When Chiang Ching-Kuo pass away in 1988, Lee was vice president, so his ascending to presidency was tolerated as that was the protocol. But when that term ends there was issue whether or not to let him continued being president, there was even possibility of military coup, as the military was KMT entrenched. Eventually he handled it with finesse and ends up winning the first direct presidential election in 1996. So while Chiang Ching-Kuo was to be praised for his action to end the martial law and Taiwanization of KMT, it was Lee Teng-hui who really carry on the work. Taiwanese history involves two parallel timelines: one for Taiwan itself and another for Republic of China. To understand modern Taiwan fully, you need to tell both stories simultaneously. Otherwise, you really only cover around half of nation's history and won't really see what makes modern Taiwan the way it is. Notably Kinmen and Matsu, significant parts of Taiwan, did not experience Japanese colonial rule. For them, the 1911 revolution marks the beginning of their modern national history. The KMT as "foreign occupying force" is not a concept that the Taiwanese in the outer islands would subscribe to. The Taiwanese are a composite people. There are the Hoklo, Hakka, the aboriginees, the post 1949 Chinese, and now the new wave of people from Southeast Asia/Pacific Islanders. Taiwanese fought on both sides of the Sino-Japanese war and even on both sides of the Chinese civil war. So modern Taiwan as a nation-state is the result of the composite history of 2 parallel storylines that lead up to the formation of what we know as Taiwanese society.

Taiwan's KMT and Chiang Kai-Shek did attempt to re-invade Mainland China, planned during the 70s. They made preparation for the invasion but were ultimately stopped bc the USA didn't want to back them. Taiwan kept its ambition to reconquer China by force until they realised mainland China has become too consolidated and powerful in 1990.

It's such an important history to learn about. It is such an achievement. Taiwan used to be a brutal bloody dictatorship like Pinochet and was/is controlled by cooperating Taiwanese Triads. You must imagine how a government that just won the defense against Japanese invasion war could become so unpopular that huge amount of the population abandoned them and followed the communists. Usually, someone who wins the defensive war would become hero but Taiwan's KMT and its dictator was so corrupt that the alternative as the better option. So KMT fled to Taiwan and established a brutal bloody dictatorship, mass murdering indigeneous people and other chinese who opposed them and put educated women in torture camps. Many decades later, the next dictator finally decided to give democracy a chance.
@janisfok88483 ай бұрын
KMT was less bloody than CCP but it had always been bloody even before fleeing to Taiwan. It is a mistake to consider KMT heroically won the second Sino-Japanese War. It is also a mistake to consider the Chinese people were united to fight against the Japanese invader. Chinese nationalism didn't reach rural areas during that time and I dare to say most Chinese in the rural area didn't identify themselves as Chinese. Don't forget most Chinese people lived in the countryside too. As such, it was very hard for KMT to mobilize Chinese to fight the war. KMT was extremely brutal in conscription. They just caught people and threw them on the battlefield without proper training and equipment. There were cities that the Chinese people actually welcomed the Japanese invaders to take control. It is better to consider the second Sino-Japanese War as KMT-Japanese war and the Chinese people were enslaved by both. At times KMT were less welcomed by the Chinese among the two.

There's a lot more than that: Firstly, the KMT had always paid lip service to the ideals of democracy in the Martial Laws era, but under the condition that "the society must stabilize and modernize first, and China must be reconquered", and therefore they have no real ideological grounds to resist democratization movements except for accusing them to be "supported by the CCP" while claiming "the country is not ready yet". When it's clearly proven that the reclamation of China was all but a pipe dream, and the Tangwai movement was so strongly opposed to CCP regime to the point of even attempting to push for a formal declaration of Taiwanese independence to the rest of the world, and that the CCP had absolutely no interest in transforming China into a democratic country in the Tiananmen Square Massacre (in which the KMT had ardently supported the protesting students), even the hardline members of the KMT had to concede to a full democratization. Secondly, Chiang Ching-Kuo was vastly different than his father: young Chiang Ching-Kuo was a passionate Trotskyist studying in Moscow yet was sentenced to labor camps by Stalin himself in the late 1920s (he had even married a Russian wife there and brought her all the way back home and to Taiwan). Having been both the leader and the victim of single-party totalitarianism, he knew too well the inherent logical fallacy of the KMT's authoritarian rule in Taiwan, and therefore was able to end it rather cleanly with his protege. Thirdly, by the time Chiang Ching-Kuo took over the KMT in 1972, Communist China had successfully tested hydrogen bombs and had forced the international community to the negotiation table, causing KMT-ruled Republic of China to lose any and all representation on the global stage. That had triggered a massive crisis of faith within the ranks of the KMT, the military, other ruling apparatus, or even the country as a whole, resulting in many of its staff and officials to emigrate (mainly to the US). Some had even chosen to betray the KMT republic to embrace Communist China, as exemplified by the betrayal of Justin Yifu Lin. Chiang Ching-Kuo had no choice but to elevate a huge amount of Taiwanese to serve as the core and majority members of the KMT, for they have nowhere to flee to and would have no choice but to stay and fight for the country. That's exactly the reason why Lee Teng-Hui was chosen to be Ching-Kuo's successor. I'd argue that KMT's internal crisis was even more important as a factor that had forced Chiang Ching-Kuo to implement the democratization process. Lastly, even the first free presidential election of Taiwan in 1996 was anything but uneventful. To suppress Taiwan's process of democratization and the growing sense of Taiwanese identity, Communist China had launched ballistic missiles to the vicinity of Taiwan and had even planned to start a full-scale invasion "if the election had resulted in the worst outcome". That had instead angered the Taiwanese citizens and pushed Lee to win over 50% of the popular vote, electing him to be the first democratically-elected President of Taiwan (Republic of China), and had made Bill Clinton to send the 7th Fleet once again to the Taiwan Strait as a show of force and commitment to protect Taiwan. _"We stand firm on the Pacific Ocean, watching the tides of time._ _"Facing tempests and billows, we never fear nor despair._ _"We prosper in the face of hardships, growing big and strong._ _"Our blood boils with passion, like the raging ocean._ _"Our will stands firm, like the towering mountains._ _"We struggle in unity, and we strengthen ourself in dignity._ _"We carry the battle flag of truth, as we stand firm on the Pacific Ocean._ _"We bring light to the darkness, as we stand firm on the Pacific Ocean."_ -- "We Stand Firm on the Pacific Ocean", a naval anthem of Taiwan (ROC).

Therefore, I personally think that we in Taiwan are lucky, too lucky. When the forced self-preservation of the Chinese Communist Party is eliminated this year and next, the communist collaborators in Taiwan need to help and join the Chinese Communist Party and all exit the stage of history.
