I believe the main reason for keeping the lawn short is bugs. The kind of bugs that are little, live in tall grass, some fly, and feed on anything with blood. Therefore one could set aside an area of tall grass for just that purpose. As long as it is out of the way it will supply food for birds and other pest eaters. I LOVE a manicured lawn but I also love the wild for it's randomness and beauty. I like the grass to be about an 1/2 in over the top of a shoe. So around 3-3 1/2inches I guess, get any higher and once again the bugs move in.

I have it high during the summer months, so that the lawn can survive a long hot rain-less period. I don't have sprinkler system and only water the lawn as a last resort. While this video stressed any height you want, I have “read” in my professional lawn books, grass can be mowed down to the crown, that part where there is a Y in the grass. It’s a lot shorter than many would assume, and in the spring and fall, I mowed to the 2 in height, and even lower at times to cut out a lot of dead thatch. I’ve seen no problems as long as it is above the crown of the grass. Also, mowing low in the fall lets leaves blow away. In the heat of summer I mow at 2 3/4 to 3 in to shade the lawn more. Having mowed my lawn under these guidelines for 40 years with a blue grass blend here in the Midwest has worked for me. Also, I see too many try to mulch with dull blades, or with grass sticking up under the mower causes a lot of “ugly” discharge. Coincidently, any rotary mower will work with a sharp blade. The Honda two blade mower has worked best for mulching, and the old walk-behind JOhn Deere’s also did a good job. I haven’t had much experience with Toro, but believe they too do a good job. “JC Iowa”

Here in Texas with frequent drought or high temperatures, I let my grasses grow longer than my neighbors. My lawn always seem greener and healthier for that reason. I think short grass in Texas can be detrimental to lawn unless you water frequently due to blazing sunlight, although my lawn has two trees giving shades. I opt for around 3 inches.

I do lawn care professionally, and it all depends on the yard and and how good of grass you got. I got yards I cut at almost four inches all the way down to two and a half. The only thing I don't like about cutting grass high is sometimes the mower will just lay it over instead of cut it. Also, spot on with training your yard to be cut shorter. It might not like it at first but will eventually get use to it. Tip: the shorter you cut it, the faster it will grow.

I live in Phx. and have tiff lawns and cut with a reel mower. I don't have to cut it everyday. It grows faster in the summer so it's cut every 4 days but all other time it's once a week. The reel I use is the first lawn mower I bought! It's one of those manual push mowers and it cost me $58 bucks brand new! Also with tiff every year you have to cut it as low as you can and then you slowly raise the height every so often with the goal of having it 1½" by the time the weather cools down and it basically stops growing.

Longer blades of grass tend to hide the clippings once a rain washes them from the tops. We've never used any chemicals or fertilizer on our lawn (kids and dogs) so we usually leave the clippings. Once in awhile we'll pick them up. We also like clover - it's extremely beneficial for where we live and for all the plants and vegetables that we grow and my daughter loves the rabbits that come by.

I would have liked a comment about "end of season"...I agree with the 3" average overall, but I like to reduce it to 2" or less at the end of the Fall...it seems to be healthier in the Spring that way, because if left tall then the snowpack crushes the tall grass and you end up with a flattened matted mess that doesn't seem conducive to Spring growth...does anyone else feel the same about that?

I can "kinda" forget to cut the grass for the last time each season so it grows a bit too much before the cold/snow starts to come. And youre right - come spring; if the grass was too long it really is a sad sight to see and often takes far longer before it looks good again. All depends on what type of grass you have. Tall fescue shouldnt be cut at 2", mine is recommended between 3.5"-4.5". Know what type is in your yard and go from there.
@tomheringer2047
@tomheringer2047 3 жыл бұрын
Obviously it all depends on which zone you live in and the type of grass you have growing in your yard. 3" is a good all around height for tall fescue to keep the weeds shaded and to develop a healthy and vigorous root system. It is imperative to establish the correct watering, feeding, and weed control program that is tailored to your lawn. If possible, use a high quality bagger like a Snapper HI-VAC to mow with. Mulching mowers only work correctly for those who understand how to use them and have an excellent weed control program. Nothing makes a better seed bed for weeds than a mulching mower that is used infrequently and has it's cutting height set too low.

If you are fortunate enough to have an irrigation system, then cut short. If you don’t cut long. The route system is 1-1/2 longer than the plant length. Thus longer routes will be more drought resistant shorter routes. And yes, the longer the plant allows for less weeds. That’s proven. Good luck & enjoy the mow!

It also depends on how much water you have. If you have a sprinkler system, you can keep it short but if you cut your grass to 2 inches instead of 4 inches it’s not going to retain as much water in your soil or collect as much to do in the morning. Are used to cut at 2 inches but in the summer the soil would dry up too much. If I let it go to 3.5 inches it looks thicker and collects more do in the morning and it seems to do a little better when it’s dry

I cut my rye grass at 2 1/4" in Portland, Oregon, which was planted last Fall. I try to follow the 1/3 cut rule, which means I have to mow it every 2nd day. It seems that this 1/3rd rule dictates a more frequent cut the shorter you keep it. I use a standard mower (not reel) to cut it. It's still a little bumpy from the lawn installation and I will put sand down to smooth it once the heat of the summer subsides.

I only changed height, mulch, fertilize once or twice a year, pick out the few weeds that show up and throw some grass seeds down in early fall - more grass = less weeds

You’re absolutely dead on about that 2 inch golden rule for rotary mowers. The color is so much better at that height. As a general rule I tell people mow tall and mow often but I’ve been experimenting a lot this year. Took my back yard down to 1/2” reel mowing this spring and the color was amazing all summer long. My front lawn was maintained at 2” and it still looked good but now that fall is here I started mowing shorter. It looked like crap once I brought it down under 1.5”. Scalped the heck out of it with my Honda mower but I figured it’s just grass I’ll just push some fertilizer and water it and sure enough it bounced back in a few days but has I gradually brought it down to an inch I’m sure it would have looked better lol. Oh well, kbg has a tendency to “shed” this time of year so there was a lot of dead stuff that came up when I dethatched and now I’m keeping it at 1” HOC with the manual reel mower. But man I’d looooove to get one of those Allet mowers or some sort of powered reel mower! Allet or swardman should send me one to test out 😁😁😁

The advice about the reasons behind the cutting height may be a little misguided here. The turf in this yard benefits from plentiful shade available on all sides, which is beneficial if you want to cut as low as 2 inches, and it works fine if conditions are right. But not everyone has that advantage. If you have turf that doesn't get much shade, and/or it doesn't receive long waterings early in the morning (or regular rainfall) then the cultivar of the grass and its height are important factors. Certain types like Kentucky Bluegrass can be slightly more drought tolerant, but should still be cut longer when there's no reprieve from sun exposure (3.0" to 3.5" or more in the summer) to maintain their color and resilience if they don't have shade available. It has less to do with foot traffic than it does with how well the roots are able to prevent evaporation during long summer days, and the longer grass heights keep the roots from baking to death. Most people who want a golf course putting green don't have the wherewithal to be diligent about maintenance, much less the knowledge of turf science required to pull that off. And most people who don't maintain their property (or have property completely overtaken by local flora) weren't maintaining the lawn anyways, which is how the other invasive plants get in there in the first place. That has nothing to do with the grass height, it's due to the neglect of the property. Taller grass blades do tend to prevent and outcompete other plants from taking root and germinating, and that's one other benefit of increasing cutting height.

St Augustine grass in Texas should be cut no lower than 3" due to the extreme temps here. The blades need to shade the roots. That comes from Texas A&M Univ who developed the strain. Cut it lower and you'll spend hundreds more on water each month and it'll still die at temps above 90 deg. which we have plenty of all summer.

With grass the ultimate height to cut at is 4 in and to cut every 4 weeks for best overall lawn health....however no one is going to let their grass grow for 4 weeks without cutting and 4 in is a little high for someone such as myself. I typically cut every 2 weeks and cut down to 3.5 in and consistently have the best lawn on the block.....A couple tips, would recommend fertilizer twice a year, once in the summer and once in the fall right after last cutting and would not recommend cutting past average fall frost date in your area (though there are exceptions to this rule). Never mow your newly soded grass below 4 in or before 4 weeks has past since original soding on first cutting. And lastly every 3 cuttings or so rather than bagging your clippings mulching will typically help to hold onto moisture in warmer summer months as well as help ensure your grass can maintain the nutrients needed to keep a full stand year after year (avoid mulching every time though) as this can lead to poorer stand health.

I have the Liberty 43 and love it. My only issue which is a big one is my battery gets stuck in the chamber. Had to purchase the battery from Amazon because they were out of stock at Allett and for some reason the battery rails that glide over the chamber are to high causing the battery to get stuck even with pushing down the release button. Have to pry it out with a screwdriver, Allett is aware but told me to just use some WD-40

I have found that 2.5 inches for bluegrass works best for me. While taller is nice, the downside is the increased number of critters. Voles, frogs, etc would love my lawn. The lower height takes away their coverage.

Taller grass blocks the sun from reaching the ground. Weed seeds can't germinate, and therefore fewer weeds. Also during the dog days of summer, you do not want to stress your lawn by mowing it short.

im in the northeast...been scaping for 40 years...2 3/4 inches in the spring to allow the sun to get in there and allow spot seeding to fill in areas...then as it gets hotter i work my way up to 4 inches max....then as it cools down in september i work back down to 2 3/4 inches...anybody who thinks theres one height for the season does not know what their talking about..the higher height in the summer helps shade the soil which keeps the ground temp cooler and retain more moisture...also discharge your clippings early and late summer...multiple benifits short and long term to that...remember those heights are northeast

I mow my low traffic bluegrass lawn at 3½ inches, if I go to 4 inches it doesn't look as good because it doesn't get stood up straight by the mower. Quicker and easier to mow often than struggling thru dense grass occasionally.

If you have cool season grass and live in the south, cut it no less then 3.5 inches. Anymore then that stresses the grass, it will brown and die off. The summer heat and not enough rain causes this. Leaving grass taller roots go deeper, cut it shorter roots don’t go as deep.
