Once Upon A Time has a real dreamy quality. Kind of surreal and sinister at the same time. Dark undercurrents and monsters lie beneath the surface of the Hollywood scene.

In the novel, during WWII, Cliff was credited with the highest Japanese kill count in the Philippines ...including 16 separate occasions where he used just his knife...after the war he shot & killed two Mafia thugs, murdered his wife with one of those bang sticks scuba divers use to kill sharks, and killed the original owner of his dog, Brandy, by breaking the guy's neck... Cliff would have SLAUGHTERED those hippies if necessary...there was nothing Manson could have ever taught his cult members that even remotely approached the level of violence Cliff had spent years inflicting on others...

A GREAT thing Tarantino does here (and I'm surprised he didn't mention it) is how he uses the diegetic music playing on the TV show she's watching to underscore the tension in the scene ! (The scene has been trimmed a bit here but in the actual film, she switches channels a few times and we suddenly start hearing that musical "suspense" cue from the TV set (which sounds A LOT like a John Williams cue from LOST IN SPACE or another Irwin Allen show) and as we follow Cliff, that TV music becomes the film's soundtrack ! Brilliant !)

9:34 Darn, that's exactly what I thought when that scene happened. Tarantino as, maybe no one can tell seeing this scene, it's a fucking great communicator, he made water clear and so close to what he expected to make the spectator feel I feel it's a shit ton of work and outmost leadership to make actors, camera people, script to pull all this shit off and made a great fucking movie Tarantino need to write a book about this, I'll be the first one reading

The most impressive thing to me was Pitt's performance alongside the build up. Cliff was the cool mellow aloof character, and while this doesnt change, you can tell by the questions he begins to ask, and his increasing stubborness that the situation is becoming very concerning even to him.
@Alan_Page3 жыл бұрын
I thought some of the most tension regarding whether Cliff was going to get out of there alive was whether Tex was going to get back before Cliff left. I can't remember if I knew Tex would be armed from the movie, or from knowing about the real Manson family, but I knew he was coming back with a gun.

If you read about the Manson Family, you'll know that he trained his closest members, specially Squeaky, Tex, and Clem, to use knives and guns. Not all of them. Most of the girls and boys were just there for the whole pseudo hippie cult crap, but a few of them were violent and dangerous. It doesnt matter how tough you are, if you get in that situation you could easily get killed.
@rickallen63783 жыл бұрын
