What drives society's understanding of right and wrong? In this thought-provoking talk, futurist Juan Enriquez offers a historical outlook on what humanity once deemed acceptable -- from human sacrifice and public executions to slavery and eating meat -- and makes a surprising case that exponential advances in technology leads to more ethical behavior.
The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). "When you judge the past, your ancestors, your forefathers, do so with a little bit more humility, because perhaps if you'd been educated in that time, if you'd lived in that time, you would've been done a lot of things wrong. Not because they're right. Not because we don't see they're wrong today, but simply because our notions, our understanding of right and wrong change across time." Chapeau 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

I agree except that you're missing ONE key problem in your analysis. All of these social media sites are designed to drive engagement above everything else. If the website design remains the same then this kind of trench warfare will continue. Whatever they need to do to get consumers to keep using their product they will do. It doesn't matter how positive or negative the consequences.

You're on to something valid here. throughout 2016 Facebook intentionally amplified hatred, fear, and disinformation of a paranoid and conspiratorial nature in American users of that platform (everyone should see the documentary "The Great Hack"). Ostensibly, this is because it improves their revenue--or so they would claim in attempted defense of their actions. Humans are genetically programmed to pay more attention to sources of fear and tribalism, and so social media with its rapid fire and fact-check-free formats are likely to make money and increase participation by such negative actions. Facebook was working in part for Putin and Russia, as well as making money. A powerful solution to the problems this video identifies is far better education--of both students and the general public--in cross-checking claims, rational and logical thinking, and teaching people to use the scientific method to evaluate what is true, and what is intended to amplify our most primitive instincts.

If we can define ourselves as being humble and forgiving, help others develop ways of thinking that allow them to become more humble and forgiving so that we have a society that can be described as both humble and forgiving, then we will have left the world a better place for our descendants. All this happens through right relationships with one another and in knowing your own self as well.

@@jameskulevich8907 Tena koe Brother, I got some good ideas from this video. I am a New Zealander with a huge interest in history. I have visited dozens of graveyards, large and small in my small country. It is impossible for me not to be unceasinly shocked by the numbers of men whose remains or memorials I visit, who died at France, Gallipoli at sea, or other places, while fighting for freedom and peace. If not the hundreds of battles, it is invariably November, 1918 on the headstones of previously healthy, active young people and their infants, that take much of my attention. My interest in history, and my interest in scapegoats have lead me to ponder deeply about the evils of this world. I have acquired much knowledge of the horrors of 31 years of last century. My deep interest in World War 1 (that 10 per cent of the population signed up to participate in), the resulting enormity of the flu epidemic, followed by a second world war and a holocaust that wiped out 6 million of people also related to me has had a very deep affect on me. I have had friends who were either a child and "shot at" and injured "while crossing a border", or "managed to get out", whose fathers were injured by shrapnel, were traumatized, lost mates, or turned i to hard, nasty, abusive, violent, or silent husbands and fathers. One friend's mother grew up in an orphanage and all her children suffered intergenerational neglect. The pain goes on, and on, and on. It has been very easy for me to create in myself a deep, deep illfilling for Germans. This happened. Two people, before they died, instructed me to "never forget". (The holocaust). I will write the end of my story here when I have time, later.

If right is only a matter of popular opinion, then I wouldn't want to have anything to do with it. I take the truth as the highest value. I don't humble myself to evil people, and I certainly don't want to forgive them. Your arguments sets the stage for revising history to make the perpetuators look innocuous, and thus allow whole communities to go through a repeat of those wicked parts of their past. If we are really interested in building resilient communities we must stick with truth and justice. Humility and forgiveness always sounds good in other peoples lips, but never stopped the spawning of evil, in most cases meek and rescindable people were actively put to use by sinister groups. Humility and forgiveness give way to gratitude, which is the weapon of choice by the depraved.

We can choose to destroy this beautyful world, or we can build a paradise for the benefit of all. We have resources to do it, but the will is missing. This guy extremely underplays the role social movements played in shifting the overton window. All of the things we take for granted as "right" today were hard fought and certainly wouldn't have magically appeared just because of advancements in technology. Yes, technology can serve as the means by which activists further their cause, but they are not the driving force in and of themselves. Technology is simply a tool and in the end it is people who change our perceptions.
