Okay don’t look at it that way - it hasn’t ruined your life, it has awakened something in your soul. You are empty doing what you once liked to do bc now THIS is what you need to do. You only get one life - and I firmly believe you won’t be happy unless you are helping others. And your videos on trail let those of us who can’t thru hike get to experience it. And that helps us have adventures with you. I still have adventures of my own too, but after a long tough day in the hospital I love to see a post from you! My advice? Hike the PCT, hike the CDT. Find a way, knowing that one day you may not want to do that anymore either and you know what I think? That is okay! In my heart, I believe that as long as you are helping others and serving - you will find your fulfillment. Right now - it’s hiking. So go hike! Find a way and get out there! Your intro is truly what has happened to you - you have transformed from a dancer into a hiker and that is who you are now! Also - remember who you are. You are a strong German (now American to me) woman. You up and moved to a different country and completely fit in. You hiked the AT - dude you did that! Think about what you really want and then go get it. If you fail - pick yourself back up and try again. I believe in you. So many of us are cheering for you! You can do this! So many of us will be praying and rooting you on! As my old Swedish roommate used to tell me in college - “go get’em dawg!”

This is what, we suffer from it, call post trail depression Roadrunner. The feelings you are having are pretty normal after the trail. Fitting back into mundane life is hard, muggles just don't understand, I still struggle with it some days. It gets better my friend. Spending time with tramily or even other past thru-hikers help. Keep hiking, try bikepacking too, write a book, or do trail magic. Trail magic has always made me feel amazing for a long time afterward when I had empty feelings. I’ll say this also, your videos help me with my empty feelings.

AT thru-hiker here, class of ‘21. I have never related so much to a post-trail video, I feel the same way after my 4 month journey. I have yet to find contentment in my normal life since thru-hiking, and I desperately long to find a place in this world. The AT truly re-wires the brain, and makes you crave more than normality. I hope we can both find where we truly belong ❤

Hi Roadrunner! I am so sorry to hear that you are feeling like you are in a rut. 😔 I think it is amazing that you teach ballroom and just know you are making a positive impact on others whether it is for them building self-confidence or growing in their knowledge of dance or just simply providing them with a happy space to unwind and enjoy dancing. Also, I think it is wonderful that you are sharing your experience and knowledge of hiking with others who want to do a shake down hike to prepare and gain more confidence in preparation for the AT. Don't listen to negative posts and don't let that stop you from doing something that you enjoy and from something that is having a positive impact on those you are helping! A suggestion maybe is to start making plans for your next "thru-hike" of whichever trail you are doing next and then it will get you excited and will be something to look forward to! I am sure you have some fun ones in mind! I look forward to seeing those adventures! 😊

I have watched quite a few hikers that vlog videos on the trail and there seems to be a similar pattern going on of post trail depression and anxiety amongst many of them, and I have heard that this happens a lot of other hikers too. Chasing Blazes was having a terrible time with it. Badbats has gone off the KZbin Channel and not sure what is happening to her, and I am sure you know more than a few too. It did not seem until recently it is happening to you too and I am concerned for you. Back when you made the videos of the TRT you seemed so upbeat that the confidence you have gained from some of your jobs and hiking the AT and TRT was turning you into a super woman... and you are and you were happy! You have experienced what it is that makes you happy and you yearn for it. Anything else seams mondain and unsatisfying to you. Use this newfound happiness as your goal to work towards. But, in working towards it, you will have to fund yourself financially, keep working at what is a dream job for you and occupy your spare time that evolves around hiking, possibly about making videos (because you are so good at it) about long distance hiking and I still think your idea of shake down hikes are wonderful despite what nay sayers say to you about them. Break into that market now as you are young and there are not a lot of people doing it. Maybe a move to the mountains would be a good step as you would be where you love and the trial nearby. I am sure there are cities in states not far from the trail(s) that have dance schools and I think that is also your true love. Your channel is the best and you are the best Juliane! Keep your chin up and work towards that next adventure! Remember the trail saying, "hike your own hike", same as you "live your own life". Do what makes you happy Juliane! We all love you!

Thank you for sharing something so personal and so important! I hope to make a living helping others go on adventures and opening a hostel post thru-hike. I hope having those plans to look forward to after my hike this year will help with the post trail depression. I experienced similar feelings after things like summer camp etc growing up so I know I’m susceptible to it and ready to address it. No one should tell you how to live- but if you’re unfulfilled in your current situation…. change it! Hugs 🥰

I successfully thruhiked the A T last year. We rode the same shuttle back to Pearisburg Va after Trail Days. I finished behind you so our paths never crossed again. I know exactly how you feel about not fitting in with 'normal' life anymore. We are feral now and we seek the freedom that we had on trail. Not a day goes by that I wish I was still on trail. The A T is part of us now and always will be. I want to hike both the PCT and CDT in the next 10 years. I will be a triple crowner before I die! 🫂👣🦵🦵

I've learned about 'trail withdrawals' for 15 years but you are the first to speak of it in detail. I began fulltiming 15 years ago and realized after 6 years in, when I no longer needed to live in a Sprinter RV that I had no desire to return to normal life. Same when I leave monastic residency, every time. I just scored a PCT permit and I've been waiting to hike the PCT for 15 years, anticipating all the changes my body and mind will absorb and I don't give a fuck if I 'ever come back'. jejeje

Good honest comments about your present inner feelings. Recognition is always the first step to solving issues. If hiking and the outdoors has become your passion, build on that aspect. Yes, I thought the shakedown service was a great idea. A friend of mine once told me, "you sometimes have to throw yourself out on the street to find out solutions." Not in a physical sense but literally. Experiment. You learn from ideas that do not work as planned. Miss the mountains? Personal perspective. I moved from the Midwest [hated humidity and bugs]. Moved to Colorado mountains. Awesome but very dry climate. Then to Northwest [WA]. Have mountains, ocean within driving distance, 4 great seasons and all the outdoors. It took walking away from jobs to accomplish this journey. You have great support from your subscribers [comments] plus people in your personal life. I have confidence you will find solutions. Patience is always tough. Thanks for sharing.

You've been bitten by the "trail bug". I live in a northern CT trail town from May thru October as a seasonal tent camper.I see the hikers come in and out of town everyday during that time. Days I am not working I meet the hikers, strike up conversations, tell them where to resupply and drive them anywhere they need to go in the area. Believe it or not, I look forward to these connections. Trail angels would understand. Just living here in this trail town excites me and I look forward to returning in early May to help the 2024 class of through hikers.

I can relate with that feeling. A couple of 100 mile plus trips this summer and a total of 350 miles on the NCT this year and I feel like my last year life is just not real. Fortunately I can retire in a couple years and hike as much as I want (hopefully if this old body cooperates). My wife seems to feel similarly. We both still enjoy our work and even much of the home life but the freedom of the trail coupled with nature itself just makes it so hard. I find myself packing and repacking my gear constantly even though we are several months from spring. I don’t think the trail solves your problems but rather gives you the opportunity and confidence to remake yourself and/or fill in the gaps in life.

If I were in Florida I'd take my new friend out for a beer and some laughs (if I showed you my dance moves I'd have you in tears laughing)! As with all of us, life is a balancing act. You do the things that you must do for survival, and try to do things that provde enjoyment when possible. Combining these two diverse needs are a major challenge for everyone. I normally do 2 to 4 day hikes. Even this small time in the woods gives me a longing to stay in the woods. I am an older person (68) and have realized that I may not have another opportunity to see the sights of a hike again. So, if I see a particularly pretty view, I may stop momentarily to admire things.

You got to experience it. You are so very lucky. So many of us cannot afford the time off or gear required to properly do it. And even more of us either don't have the physical fitness, ability or even drive to do it. Many people don't even know what they are missing out on, tho I do. Doing a thru hike is on my bucket list filled of things I may never get to do. So while I empathize with your post trail depression, it pales in comparison to NO trail depression. Remember that. Take those memories and experiences you made with you, you have them, they are yours forever to cherish, and can only lead to more fulfilment off the trail, no matter how much you will always miss it. Take care. You seem like a wonderful person!

When you started on the AT you had a goal and you accomplished it, but maybe there was another goal hidden somewhere underneath. Life is all about changes both planned and unexpected. Maybe you were ready for a change but just didn’t realize it at the time. Something brought you to the trail and showed you that there are other passions you might pursue. Once you find it I’m sure you’ll be successful.

This is a very personal and insightful video which is shared with her audience just for the purposes of being transparent with who she is and what she is feeling / going through. For all those commenting with the quick advice on how to deal with those feelings, especially those who seem to think she should just relocate. I doubt things are so simple that this is a solution that could be easily accomplished (whether or not it would even really address all the issues presented here). Remember she said she had some private reasons for staying in Florida - I suspect this has to do with personal relationships that she just has not shared fully on KZbin (note the ring on her finger which she not-so-subtly referenced in a recent video, and the child booster seat in the backseat of her car). Sometimes just a comment of support without the need to offer a solution is all someone really needs from us.

It’s nice to hear philosophical commentary in an AT KZbin video. Thank you! Not commenting on the personal side of this, of course, but it is a great video for folks to learn from. I’ve never done the trail, but I’ve done other difficult, fabulous, fulfilling things. The question each time is the same: Knowing that nothing will never “fix problems,” or dramatically change one’s everyday reality, should one choose to find the next adventure, or head to Starbucks? (I’ve done both, to be sure. 😊) My sneaking suspicion is that when one gets done with all the difficult, wonderful adventures, and yes, the coffees too, that’s what is called a good life.

JMO You have answered your own questions about what you want in life and to do. Someone had a great suggestion is move to a place near the trail or a trail town(Hot Springs). First you may want to get the triple crown under your belt. You have fallen in love with the mtns like you did when you moved from Germany to Florida. Still continue your dancing career. Become a ridge runner. Patrol and help others on the trail. Continue your shakedown hikes. Then maybe get into becoming a hostel or a shuttle. This keeps your hand in pickle jar. You may even make a decent amount of money. So with a little hosteling, ridge running, dancing and shakedowning, you will satisfy all your needs. Hang in there and good luck SloMoe

Until then, I try to find things I'm passionate about that keep that fire lit aka day hikes and day dreaming lol I think the shake down service you were providing was an awesome tool to keep that fire lit inside of you too. Don't let the nay Sayers get you down. There's going to be naysayers no matter what you do!!!!! Don't let them win. Some thru-hikers tell me that the trail was a catalyst to feelings they had or directions they wanted to explore. They hoped the trail would resolve those feelings, but the best it could do was help them focus their thoughts. It seems you are working on the directions you have wanted to explore and this takes some time to find the right fit. As a survivor of a number of technology startups, I can understand some of your confusion and doubts. The only solution is to jump in. Explore the ideas you think are most likely and then be willing to continue or cut them as they do or don't work out. Just remember to cut the less likely attempts quickly so you can focus on the better performing ideas. Really, it's just like following a path through a snowstorm, you cannot clearly see where you're headed, but you know when to retrace your steps or to continue on.

I agree with this comment and also add you would enjoy living here in Tennessee as well. I am 45 minutes away from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in a Rural area . I have loved it my how life. It is my sanctuary. But, like you, I am at another phase of life and life happenings have changed me. Not all bad that’s not what I mean. It just makes you feel you don’t fit. Funnily enough I am in hold til our youngest graduates and moving to Florida. She needs it for her chosen college , we need it for physical health reasons of warmer climates year round, I personally need it because I have had so many losses the worst being my son three years ago and I have to have a new start to keep from stopping everything and to make myself heal. Short visits to the beach, trips to attractions there have been so therapeutic so yeah. We hopefully can high five each other on the road or at least wave. You need change from the status quo/environment for you. Standing water often stagnates and nothing can grow in it or around it. Do it for you. No one else will. I have learned the hard way. Best wishes for you and I am proud of you for sharing this. It helped me too

I haven't thru-hiked the A.T., but I've done sections of it and other trails (I did thru-hike a local trail in my state but it only took 5 days). The thing I notice is that when I am on trail it has helped me work through things. And face things. And deal with things. You are in the in-between. I once heard someone tell a story of how they were invited to speak at an event. They were in a back room and there were two doors between them and the stage. When they left the back room, the door behind them closed, but the door they were to walk through to get to the stage had a malfunction and didn't open right away...so there they were...in between where they came from and where they were going to...they were in the "in between". You are in the in-between. Don't stop doing things because of cristicism...others tried to project their fears onto you when you told them you were going to hike the A.T. and you need to adopt the same mentality with nay-sayers now. People will put you down because of an issue THEY have. There is a saying, "you get the loudest boos from the cheapest seats". Those not invested in you will say things based on their own crap. Keep dreaming. Keep stepping outside your comfort zone. Keep taking folks on shakedown hikes! I think that is a great service to offer! Keep inventing things! Keep finding ways to stay involved with the trail you love and other trails. You will find your way. A lady I follow on YT got some hate so she turned comments off on her videos for awhile! Do it!

My heart goes out to you. Life is not easy like Thru Hiking the AT is not easy. If hiking the AT is someone’s strategy for fulfillment of life then they will likely be disappointed. The tactics to the AT are pretty simple; wake-up , feed yourself, pack up, set a goal ( where you are going to hike to), get there, put up your sleep system, eat, sleep and get up again & again and then again and one more day, then a week then a month and then 5 or 7 months finish and do all this while not hurting yourself to the degree it takes you off trail. It is a simple fairly predictable life. Just hike your own life off the AT. Like on the AT seek emotional support & comfort from your friends and/or family and do the same every day & like the trail don’t beat yourself up for one bad hike day. Love your flogs and I will pray for you . ❤😊

Thanks for putting yourself out there. I think this would resonate with many past thruhikers. Many of us thruhike repeatedly, and are really only happy and peaceful on the trail. It's true, thruhiking does ruin your life, in a way. There is no stopping the yearning. That said, post-thruhike depression is real, and treatable! I urge you to seek mental health care. You don't have to feel this way. If you don't want to see a professional, you could try something like St John's Wort - which has helped me deal with winter depression, without a prescription. A wanderluster feels this too. You just have to find your place in this world. I have live in so many places and still don't know where I will be in five years. Give yourself a break, you are realizing who you are. And change it, if your not happy.

I am 58 years old and can relate. I have learned that, when you accomplish something big in your life, it causes you to re-evaluate your existance. You're in a phase of re-evaluation I believe. This can be good if you use it correctly. Use the little evaluation tool that people use often in your situation. That is write two columns. One column listing the positives of your current situation. Then in the other column list the negatives. Which column has the most items listed? The one with the most will determine your next move or no move at all. It is that easy to start figuring out how to find happiness again. And by the way I have experience in designing an item and marketing it successfully, if you're interested in getting guidance on that.

It sounds a lot like coming home from doing an overseas deployment to a combat zone. You're glad to be home but nothing feels right. You're experiencing post trail depression big time. I had a real bad time with a lack of motivation when my wife died. You just have to push yourself to do the things that have to be done. Take care of your car. Put air in the tires, check and top off the fluids, clean the glass(including the headlights), clean the windshield wiper blades, and have a basic survival kit in the car. With time, it will get better. Stay logical because you are susceptible to making a judgement error when depressed. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick

I live in Montreal, Quebec. Near us we have the Adirondack's Mountains AND the famous White Mountain (that you cross in your AT thru). I know that when I will finish the AT in 2024 I will need theses mountains. Either for the sound of nature but also for walking. I work hard but each weekend I go in Whites Mountain or Adirondacks. I suggest you to go live in North-East USA. This way you could hike every time you need it and there are certainly dance schools that would need your expertise.

Saranac Lake but you do need Winter sports love. High peaks are wonderful and I have been seeing people from Canada hiking there for decades. I could swear one day at the summit of Marcy it was mostly Canadiens. Rangely Lakes in Maine is another choice but more remote. Brazilian wife hates the cold so my vacation home in Florida becomes my FT retirement home next year. Will make trips to the mountains of NC to get my cold in.

So - Years ago, many years ago, I hiked for 35 days across the Alaska Brooks Range -- south to north. I didn't see any other human, there were no cell phones in those days and no ultralight hiking gear.... There was no night. There were only two ways out. Go back to my starting point or continue to my end point where I will hop a mail plane back to civilization, if you can ever call Fairbanks civil. I got depressed when I finished that hike, but quickly realized life goes on and if I hadn't hiked this wilderness without a trail, I would not be depressed. So I quickly realized that depression was not going to be in the cards and after two days back in Fairbanks, I decided to go back to enjoying life. Life, it's great. it's the only real game in town that I know of. It's not always easy. And I realized I should be thankful that I was able to complete a solo hike in true wilderness. I did it. No one would come with me. They thought I was crazy. "You'll be eaten by a bear." "You'll get lost." "You'll get injured and starve to death." "You'll be mauled by a crazy moose." "The mosquitos will suck all your blood." Yes, there was another way out of the wilderness. I could have been mauled by a grizzly. Ha! But that didn't happen. Thankfully. And all my life I can look back on those wonderful days in the Alaskan Arctic walking among the jagged peaks of the Brooks Range, (Although it felt like one long day!) And that has always been a positive feeling. Perhaps the trail didn't ruin your life, but changed your outlook on life. You walked the Appalachian Trail. Congratulations. That is such an accomplishment. You have talent to teach dance, and that makes you lucky. And you have a conflicting (is that the correct description) spirit for adventure on the trail. And you have grit and determination, otherwise you would have not finished the trail. Life is also full of contradictions. I think you will figure it out. Don't be so hard on yourself. You will be fine!!!!!!

I honestly thought I would create a real life social circle that I could hang out with and go places with after the trail or find people that would continue to hike with me on other trails but in the Six years that I have been hiking I have only gained social media friends and six years later I am still sitting in my tent alone going on thru hikes alone doing everything alone. Honestly in my six years of hiking I have not accomplished what I wanted to. Sometimes the trail doesn't provide.

You have accomplished much but you are clearly wanting for meaning and self actualization. You show self esteem through the respect of students, other hikers, and subscribers. Your goals and routines show independence and confidence to trust your judgement. You give and receive respect from your students. You are always learning, applying, and improving your knowledge. Emotionally you are reflective without pride. You can meet your basic needs with ease + money for $$$ coffee. You also have good health an d physical safety. You do show some despair because nothing is making you eternally satisfied. Aren't the satisfactions of being a good person among your fellow hikers, students, friends enough to sustain you. Cherish your connections with your fellow man.

I've been spending many summers tenting alone in the woods. But it's not just about the woods. It's also about getting away from 2023 and living life like it was 1862. It's also Emily Dickinson and doing a lot of writing. I have a background in philosophy and I like to do a lot of reading and writing. I need the bush life to get away from 4 walls but I also need books to get away from the convenient life. I don't drive but I bike and hike and paddle a lot. It helps to live in remote country where all my needs are nearby. I am 74 now and this is the way it's going to be until the end. Many best wishes to you.

It is easy to see this is really hard for you. The AT was a goal that you set for yourself, a way to fully test your drive, abilities and your resolve. Life is really about balance and focus... you will find your true north again!. All of us have an empty "place" that we are trying to fill. Many try to fill it with harmful and often selfish motives and desires. For me, it was my faith in a higher power and a constant desire to help others. Just keep pushing your limits one day at a time. It is easy to see that you have a unique gift for sharing and you love helping others. Continue setting your goals and just keep on... keeping on! You have to do what pays the bills in order to fund the fun! This too will pass!

I am much older than you 64 and I can relate to you in many ways. I love backpacking so much that I struggle in my life and mostly my marriage. I have hoed the Long Trial in Vermont that last two years and next year I will do the Colorado trail. The thing is I want to spent months on the trail and my wife is not into backpacking so the compromise is my trips I take. This should be enough but it’s not, as I age out I feel I need to do this things while my body still allows this. I would find Florida a living hell as I am a mountain person. Someplace like the White Mountains of NH would be a great place I would think. Near the AT and endless trials. Plenty of people have built their channels and lived their dreams.
