what abote the time a sovjet/russian nuclear sub infiltradet the uss enterprise carrier groupe for a week and surfaced every houre to take photos wtih the peliscope and got all the acoutic recordings for all the shipes in the groupe. or the time the sojvet/russian alfa sub chased a aircraft carrier and then it all the sudden was in front of the carrier. offical speed on the alfa was 45knots but the americans said it was traveling at 69 to 70 knots thats 80mph or 129kmh

This kind of task is not unusual for the RN " silent service", during the Falklands war 1982 the nuclear submarine HMS Conqueror torpedoed and sank the Argentinian cruiser General Belgrano making her the most experienced boat and crew in the world...... which made her the best choice to be sent into soviet waters and steal the new sonar array the USSR had suddenly developed ( they had jumped forward very quickly to equal NATO) ..... HMS Conqueror was fitted out with a grabbing device and a cutting tool that would " chew" the cable giving the impression it had snagged on rocks, she left British waters heading for the Baltic sea. She located the target ship and managed to keep undetected and cut free the towed array bringing it back undetected........ after inspection it was found to be a copy of the American navy style sonar and an investigation discovered a spy in the military department. ....

I was on an exercise off the West coast of Canada, about the same year, when a RN sub, Churchill from memory, spent the whole exercise beneath a US nuc. carrier...We scored the only submarine prosecution from a RNZAF Orion P3B for the whole exercise.

The skipper and the crew of HMS Swiftsure had balls of steel to gather data about the Kiev in the Lion's Den of the USSR.
@heisenberg19989 Жыл бұрын
and they had to wear extra undies to dampen the sound so that they are not heard while they walk inside the sub

Swiftsure is at Devonport awaiting disposal not Rosyth. British subs were doing this all the time, I was on Sovereign in the late seventies, you always knew when you were going on a "sneaky" because the boat went through a pre-determined routine, that included one last phone call.

As a U.S. Navy submariner I that has gotten the same data on a Russian submarine, there are a lot of holes in this report. It did happen. But as the U.S. and British Submarine Forces shared data at that time… I’m not going to fill those holes in. I can say it was a lot damn harder and risky than implied here. We were fortunate to get our target and data. It was fun, we can get a lot closer to noisy Russian ships then you know.

I was on Swiftsure in 1977 when this event took place, we were detected so went deep the Russian then tried to find us. We went deep and silent and left area for a day or too before returning for more intel.

Yep, one of the Kiev-class carriers, Baku, was sold to India and modified into what is now INS Vikramaditya

the kiev isnt a hotel. Its moored rotting away in china tho. There are plenty of videos of people climbing aboard and exploring its shell.
@Historically11 ай бұрын
It is a hotel, I believe you’re thinking of the Minsk, another Kiev-class carrier currently abandoned in China

there's no way they could have gotten so close, they would have been detected , erm the British also managed to 'nuke' the US with a big arse Vulcan bomber (twice)

The Kiev was a piss poor excuse for a carrier and saying they snuck up under it isn't saying much considering it couldn't leave port unless escorted buy tugboats. And boy look at her now what a jewel in Putin's crown.
@admiralmallard7500 Жыл бұрын
Actually the kutsnetsov is a different class of carrier altogether. The Kiev types were sold off. Though the tug boat part is accurate 😂

Of course! Nice, easy little jobs that even we British can manage without too much risk of having big, tough Americans then bore us into a stupor over several hours of telling us how they could've done it better. Yes! That's what we like. PS; though I think, btw, that you're maybe getting the "Kiev" confused with the "Admiral Kuznetsov". An easy slip to make, old chap... despite Kuznetsov's signature and underwater profile being quite distinct. Not that 'Swiftsure' did THAT trip too, of course... (I.i.r.c, it was 'Trenchant' or 'Talent')
@admiralmallard7500 Жыл бұрын
@squirepraggerstope3591 One of the S class went under one of the Kiev class. No ones done that manuver with Kutsnetsov as far as we know. Also the Americans haven't done it either so I'd say we're pretty useful
