Today on TPE we look at Tariq Rahman's work to see if Urdu is an Islamic language and explain how the British spread Urdu in India, and why.
Was Pakistan right to impose Urdu?
Was Liaquat Ali Khan right to say Urdu is the language of a hundred million Muslims?

you are completely wrong. At first Shaurasni Prakrit evolved and form Kharboli or hindvi. This was called Hindustani. Deccani, lahori and dehlavi all were still called Hindustani or hindavi until Delhi sultanate which made persian as state language. Persian loan words added to the language and still it was called Hindavi or Hindustani. It was 13th century when shahmukhi persianized style of writing was adopted by speakers but it was called old hindi, deccani not urdu. So basically persianized version of Hindustani was also called Hindi or Hindavi or their precursor BrijBhasha and others. It was after Mughal period Aurangzeb, when it began to known as zuban e urdu muala. Bahmani sultanate became independent from Delhi sultanate Tughlaqs and used urdu in opposition to Tughlaqs persian. In 19th century, standard Hindi was promoted by extracting the effect of persian and arabic from Hindustani or Urdu to form more sanscriticized Hindi which was then advanced when modern Hindi was standardized. So basically Urdu or Hindi were synonymous and Urdu used the devnagri and other Indian scripts at one point of time but due to excessive patrionage of Muslim kingdoms, Urdu became distinct. British already knew Urdu and Hindi and they tried to divide and rule policy on language also patrionizing Hindi and Urdu making them diverted more apart. Urdu is a language which not only written in Persianized script but also in Kaithi script which was used in Bihar and even in Bengali and Devnagri script. Munshi prem chand also wrote in both scripts. Both languages Hindi and Urdu are dialects but due to much literature, and influence, they became separate languages

I personally don't believe Languages have Religion. But still if Arabization is the only criteria for a language to be Islamic then by that criteria *Sindhi* is the most Islamic Language of Subcontinent because :- 1) Sindhi is the first Indo Aryan Language to come in contact with both Arabic & Persian due to its geographical proximity to Muslim World. 2) Sindhi is the first language of Subcontinent in which Holy Qur'an was translated in a time when Urdu was not even born in suburbs of Delhi !!

This idea of Urdu being Islamic and Hindi being Hindu was triggered by the arrival of the British In earlier times , children used to have education in both Urdu and Hindi . I have given example of Premchand . Devaki Nandan Khatri , author of the historical fantasy novel Chandrakanta , also had his education in both Urdu and Hindi . And if we search , we may find examples of many other people. Historian Sumit Sarkar notes that in the 18th and the bulk of the 19th century Urdu had been the language of culture over north India, for Hindus as much as Muslims For the decade of 1881-90, Sarkar gives figures which showed that the circulation of Urdu newspapers was twice that of Hindi newspapers and there were 55% more Urdu books as Hindi books So your comment that Muslims wrote in Arabic script and Hindus wrote in Sanskrit script is not totally accurate

The core issue is that the majority of Pakistanis are Sunni Hanafi Muslims, further divided into sub-sects such as Barelvi and Deobandi. Both Barelvi and Deobandi movements originated in Uttar Pradesh (the Hindi/Urdu belt). As a result, Indian Muslims learned Islam from Urdu-speaking Barelvi and Deobandi clerics like Ahmad Raza Khan and Ashraf Ali Thanvi. Urdu became the lingua franca, but a significant issue arose in Punjab. Since Sikhism was closely tied to the Punjabi language, Punjabi Muslims began to teach their children the language of the Barelvi and Deobandi clerics instead of Punjabi. When Jinnah urged Bengalis to adopt Urdu as the national language, they were offended. However, when he suggested the same to Punjabis, many of them, like my ancestors, responded that they already had the Urdu-obsessed, Sialkot-born Iqbal, who was central to Punjabi identity. The Punjabi elite, ashamed of their own language and enamored with Urdu, aligned with Urdu-speaking migrants from India's Hindi-Urdu belt. This obsession with Urdu, coupled with a bias against native languages, contributed to the marginalization of the languages of Punjab, Sindh, KPK, and Balochistan. In Karachi, Sindhis were even derogatorily referred to as 'Ghair Maqami' (non-locals) in their own province of Sindh.

Muslims can use any name but it should not be related to other gods and godesses and its meaning should not be having bad meanings. For example Sachin is linked to Hindu god Indra. Muslims donot believe that Indra is a god . This is against basic tenet of Islam which is Toheed , meaning that believe on one God Allah who is the only One. Ramesh is for Rama - a religious figure again. Suresh means Ruler of gods. We Muslim dot believe that there are multiple gods as word suresh presents. So Muslims are very keen on selecting names. Abdullah e.g means sevant of God not Gods. There are many non-arabic names Muslims of Indian subcontinent do use but their meanings has to align with ideology and their meanings should not be bad. I can quote examples; Heer, Sohni, Veena, Meera, Neelum, Momal, Sassui, Sanam, Sindhu, Marvi, Sorath, Raja, Rao, Amar, Kamal, Dulla, Ranjha, Veer, Mumtaz, Sitara, Feroz, Abdul Kalam, Azad, Shahbaz, Pervaiz, Pasha, Parsa, Anchan, Snghay, Rozi, Gulsher, Afrasiyab, Malala, Gulab, Raisham, Neelum, and there are various names which have no arabic origins

In Pakistan, there is a linguistic heirarchy that’s deeply rooted in the history of its creation. English is at the top of that heirarchy as it was the language of our former colonial rulers, followed closely by Urdu ( the language of western Pakistan’s political elite ) . Sophisticated chauvinism and hate against other regional languages and ethnic groups is always done by misusing these two languages. Punjabi is limited for crude and lewd remarks. If someone wants to abuse another of being dumb, they will apply a caricatured and distorted Pashtu accent. Sindhi, Baluchi, Seriaki, Balti, Shina, Burushaski, Hazaragi etc are considered even more inferior languages and not to be spoken or discussed.

The inferiority complex among converts to hate their native Dharmic roots, which sadly occupies the language too, even though langauge continues as a thread despite religious beliefs in diff times. 2. And if you start promoting local languages, you would very much see your northern (KPK) and SW (Balochistan) borders flaring up. That would legitimise their struggle against the pak state. So, no choice. Too late.

You did well to mention the considerable role of the British in promoting Urdu in all regions under their rule in the Subcontinent. That was because the British knew that for a colonial force to maintain rule and stability in a region, it was paramount for all the colonial administrators to communicate well in the local language. But as we know India and the subcontinent is extremely diverse in cultures and languages, perhaps more than anywhere else in the world. That created a logistical nightmare for any foreign occupier to maintain rule. So a 'Bastardised' version of multiple local languages was created and promoted to maintain a middle-ground where all district administrators could focus on one language and the local populace can somewhat understand the new language in some capacity. A la Urdu...

Persian has a greater claim as Islamic language of the subcontinent since Persian culture, poetry, religion defined Islam for Muslim elites for centuries before the British intervention. Jinnah declaring Urdu to be the national language in English to a Bengali audience has got to be a case study as one of the worst mistakes of political history. Goes to show how out-of-touch, aristocratic and undemocratic the muslim elite truly was.

I think that one major thing missing in this video is that the british came from a different civilisation altogether with no commonality for the land. From the colonial perspective for such a large land mass held between variable muslim and hindu kingdoms it is highly possible that they substituted it for european racial/ethnic nations, proof of this we see even after the establishment of british india consolidating whole of south asia, that they enforced the caste system as a parallel to their hierarchical classes. So if hierarchy became caste, races became religious distinctions, The only missing clue from a European perspective would be linguistic markers for community. So two big ruling groups based on religious instead of racial lines hindus and muslims, social classes and hierarchy is caste system, muslim lingua franca is urdu, hindu lingua franca is hindi. We have to remember that the colonial masters were very bureaucratic in nature often making decisions in closed dark rooms out of touch with reality. Every single thing is carefully labelled, shelved, group, titled and boxed regardless of diverse syncretic nature of society so the administrators find it easier to substitute. The british indian penal law is an excellent example of that, in its extensive and exhaustive nature, detailed. Whether for british bureaucratic norms or for finding some semblance or parallel to european norms, or just via cultural imperialism, the steps indeed did create two different nations in a religious sense. Intellectuals may argue but the mass populism of our times on either side prove it was for the best. Pakistanis will claim urdu is the language of nobility, indians will abhor it as tongue of the whores. Your video though does miss one very key detail, Urdu may not be an islamic language but it is indeed the language of south asian muslims. The ethnic languages of every single community would have existed regardless of muslim settling or coming to this region but not urdu. In its vocabulary, in its promixity and abundance of persian turkish arabic words and its very dialect and script it has become distinct and a community marker long before Pakistan came into being. Whether deliberately or unintentionally it is now interwoven with Pakistani and south asian muslim identity, which is why even the muslim minority in india educates itself in urdu, and kashmir is one of the largest urdu speaking regions in india if not the largest. It is now an intrinsic community marker in south asia and has become a muslim community marker. How it got here one can explain theorise or argue about, but one cannot refute or move past the present reality.

Urdu could never gain a national language status in indian subcontinent, because it did not get patronage from any significant and pan indian dynasty like Persian, that was officially adopted by Mughal ruling elites, Urdu was actually promoted, unintentionally by Britishers who happened to be in touch and were somewhat familiar with Indian people and markets for over two centuries, whereas Persian, although a rich language was not of much benifit for them because they were not interested in Persian lands, another reason for promoting urdu aka hindustani tongue, scripted in Persian script was that most of the educated class, if not all, was of muslims.

Not sure why you even feel the need to write a book about it. We in Kpk know very well that it was not the language of Pashtuns, Balochs, Punjabis, Sindhis specifically. We wholeheartedly accept Urdu as our national language because we needed a common court language, it was the court language of India from centuries and it was persian before that I believe. Not sure at what direction likes of you are heading with Urdu language and Perisan anthem, neither of these are the problem, and knowing our people probably it would have been a problem if it was in Sindhi/Punjabi/Pashto/Balochi. Chosing any language would have its consequences and people of other languages would have preferred their own as an official langauge. It was all political and power game if Urdu was used as an excuse to demean any community and in no way this has anything to do with chosing some specific language as an official langauge. Despite urdu being our national language it has not hurt us one bit our culture is not dependent upon the language we speak. Most of us of central asian and Persian descent used to speak Farsi but now most of us don't similarly decision to use urdu has not suppressed any of us in any way, of course every community would have preferred to use their language but thats not practical.

3:55 Sindhi and Punjabi were written in Indic scripts originally and later changed to Arabic script in some regions based on the religious character of the demographic. Pakistan's education minister Fazlur Rahman was simply trying to do with Bengali what was already done with Sindhi and Punjabi, if languages create nations then perhaps the scripts used to write those languages play a part as well.

You are right, the East India Company made Urdu the medium of instruction in schools in the Punjab and the then NWFP. Not many of us know that initially there were three separate EIC's colonial territories in India, each with its separate army and civil service. They were the Bengal Presidency, which covered all of northern India from Bengal upto the Khyber Pass; Madras Presidency, which covered the southern part of India and its Eastern coast; and Bombay Presidency, which covered Maharashtra, Gujarat, the Western coast, some areas in the Gulf, and Aden in Yemen. In addition to having separate armies and civil services, each Presidency had chosen one language from its territory to use for official dealings with the inhabitants of the Presidency. They called it the official vernacular. White EIC officials had to learn that language to perform their official duties and deal with locals. The inhabitants of the Presidency also had to learn that language to be able to deal with their rulers. The official language of Bengal Presidency was Urdu (Urdu, not Hindi is still the second official language of the Indian state of West Bengal), Tamil was the official vernacular of the Madras Presidency, and that was the language people living in that Presidency had to use when performing official duties and dealing with EIC officials whether their own language was Tamil or Telgu or Malyalam. The Bombay Presidency was different in this regard. It initially had two official vernaculars: Marathi and Gujarati, and after 1843 Sindhi was added to these It is for the reason of using the same language throughout the Bengal Presidency that Urdu was chosen as the medium of Instruction in schools when Punjab (which included Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa and Kashmir) was officially annexed in 1849. The medium of instruction in schools in Sindh was Sindhi because it was a part of the Bombay Presidency, not the Bengal Presidency.

Hindi and Urdu and different vernaculars of the same language. They practically identical, you can't even call them different dialects. The pronouns, verbs, grammar is identical. Each and every Urdu sentence is grammatically correct in Hindi. The only difference is choice of words. If more Persian words are used, it will be Urdu, if more Sanskrit words are used it will be Hindi. Funnily enough Hindi contains Persian words as well and inversely Urdu contains Sanskrit words which makes a sentence in the language be classified as a percentage Hindi or percentage Urdu. I think it's time to remove these unnecessary labels, it will only enrich our language. The day to day language should be made the written and formal language as well.

You will see that it was totally accepted that Hindi is deivided into five categories of dialects: Purvi Dialects having Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Magahi Madhyavarti having Braj and Avadhi, Pashcimi having Khadi Boli, Hindustani (which was later named Urdu) and Bangdu. Although Jinnah was smarter than Nehru and Gandhi combined, but as a Brahmin who believe in 2 Nation Theory probably more than even Jinnah would have believed in; I would say even Jinnah was also stupid to a great extent. Even if it would have taken a great amount of difficuly for a generation or two, but why couldn't he dare to make Arabic the unifying national language of Pakistan? I know he couldn't survive longer but still he should have made it clear atleast on his death bed because it was that important to make Arabic the prime language. Urdu may be your 2nd language and regional languages may be your mother tongue, but Arabic should have been made the official language in Pakistan if he was really that serious to take this 2 Nation Theory to next level in the civilizational realm of a nation's journey. It had many strategic benefits - A) 2 Nation Theory would have been more stronger because Urdu is unfortunately weakening it. In fact it's bringing India and Pakistan closer to understanding each others. B) Arabic would have been easier to force upon Bangladeshis than Urdu. C) Lesser political conflict today in Pakistan in the name of languages. D) Better foreign relations with Muslim countries. I mean more easy money. Just joking 🤣 E) Pakistanis would have got more acceptability in the markets of Arab today, which means more employement and more remittances. Paisa hi Paisa hota. 🤣 F) Indian Muslims who try to hide their inferior complexity today, would have openly started looking towards Pakistanis for thier command in Arabic language. G) It would have injected organic superior psychology and closer relationship with Arabs in the minds of Pakistanis and your Ummah would have been stronger than what it is today. I know Imran Khan tried to make Arabic mandatory for every school in Pakistan, but this should have been done on the very first day itself. You may be thinking why I as a proud Hindutva boy saying this. But that's for another day to explain. Bas itna samajh lo - Arabic in Pakistan would have been WIN-WIN for both Hindus in India and Muslims in Pakistan. Baki Chanakya philosophy k hisab se Jinnah Nehru Gandhi can be ranked 1 , 2, 3 in strategy making.
