It would have always been a threat to our sovereignty And the amount of overlap with the whole Afghanistan and India would essentially open a front in west.. which would take up a lot of resources.. look at Pakistan.. they have wasted 77 years in the same war..

24:20 Faisal is totally wrong here. Nehru was an impulsive person who did not know what he should say and never contemplated the consequences of his words (or even actions). Now, almost all of Indians are in agreement that Nehru lacked strategic thought. Coming back to the topic of partition, most of the Congress leaders, were skeptical of Cabinet Mission Plan because it envisaged a weak federal government for India. In Congress’s vision of India, federal government (popularly called the ‘central government’ or simply the ‘Centre’ in India) had to be strong (at least as strong as the federal government in the United States) in order to keep the diverse nation such as India together. The federal government envisioned in the Cabinet Mission Plan was very weak, so much so that it had no way of even raising its own revenues i.e. no power of taxation. It would have to be dependent on grants from the groupings of provinces for sustenance. Cabinet Mission Plan divided provinces into group of Hindu majority provinces, group of Muslim majority provinces and the group of princely states - Congress leaders were dead against this provision of grouping of provinces and they accepted the Cabinet Mission Plan only after expressing strong reservations about this provision of grouping of provinces because it meant giving Muslim League Pakistan that they wanted. That is what Nehru said in a press conference in July 1946 when asked about it by a journalist. He said that the Congress would enter the Constituent Assembly with an open mind, not entire bound by the conditions of Cabinet Mission Plan (or something to that effect). Jinnah accepted Cabinet Mission Plan only because there was a provision of secession of group of Muslim majority provinces from the Union, if the Muslim majority provinces felt like that they were getting a raw deal. Congress leadership felt that such provisions in the Cabinet Mission Plan could lead to balkanisation of India as Muslim League led Muslim group of provinces could secede from the Union of India giving frivolous reasons and by fanning communal feelings of Muslims. That is why Congress was dead against grouping. Last but not the least, most Pakistanis forget to take into account that Congress did not accept partition of India until they realised that working with Muslim League was just next to impossible. Yes, you read that right. Most people either don’t know or ignore the fact that Congress and Muslim League ran a coalition government with Muslim League for more than almost 7-8 months before accepting partition plan. From 2 Sep 1946 to 15 Aug 1947, there was a Nehru led Interim Government of India in place. This government was formed in consequence to the elections that took in December 1945 and Jan 1946. This government was formed in turbulent circumstances, just a couple of weeks after Jinnah’s infamous Direct Action Day (on 16 Aug 1946) which kickstarted a chain of Hindu-Muslim riots across the country. On 29 October 1946, Muslim League was also made a part of this interim government at the insistence of Viceroy Lord Wavell and Liaquat Ali Khan became Finance Minister of India. Muslim League was included in the government because it was thought that this would help calm down Hindu-Muslim riots in the country, but Muslim League leadership used their position of power to fan the riots even more. The riots kept on flaring up more and more… and then, one day, they reached Punjab. When the riots reached Punjab, they were extremely bloody because of two reasons- (1) Punjab had around half a million of demobilised soldiers from World War 2. These soldiers had been demobilised after WW2 but they had rifles and more importantly they were trained to kill. These retired soldiers knew how to attack in organised manner which ordinary civilian rioters in other provinces did not. (2) In other provinces, Gandhi’s ahimsa/non-violence had a pacifying influence (some call it impotent-ising influence but I would stick to pacifying influence) on Hindus and Hindus did not retaliate that much. In Punjab, there was a third element - Sikhs. Sikhs were not under Gandhi’s influence and they were led by Akalis. Sikhs gave equal and opposite reaction to Muslim League led rioting. Proof- while Pakistan kicked out >90% of its religious minorities (Hindus and Sikhs), there was no tit for tat reaction in India except Punjab (Save Punjab, rest of India retained >90% of Muslims). Even the Hindu majority provinces/princely states (e.g. Rajputana, Bombay, Kutch, U.P., West Bengal, Assam) which received a lot of Hindu refugees maintained calm and thus retained >90% of their Muslim population. In Punjab, the Sikhs were not under Congress’s pacifying influence and returned violence with equal or even greater violence. That is why Indian Punjab which had at least 30-35% Muslim population before Partition has almost none today. For example- Amritsar had more than 45% Muslim population back in 1941. It has less than 1% Muslims in 1951 or even today. It is hard to find a Muslim in Amritsar where once every other resident was a Muslim. In contrast, you see so many Muslims in Lucknow, Kanpur, Jaipur, Gujarat, Mumbai, Kolkata. If you listen to the accounts of Muslim refugees going from India to Pakistan in 1947, more than 90% would talk about Sikhs attacking their convoys. Anyway, coming back to my main point, so when the communal riots reached Punjab in March 1947, they were exceptionally violent and bloody, so much so that they resembled a civil war like situation. Because the seat of power Delhi was also so close to Punjab, the heat of massive bloodshed in Punjab affected the decision making process of Congress leadership as well. They felt that the Muslim League cadre had been fanning the riots rather than calming them down. The Congress leadership, especially Sardar Patel, realised that Muslim League might never give up the demand for Pakistan, and if they seceded after a civil war then the borders of Pakistan might include Delhi, Hyderabad, Bhopal, Calcutta and Assam. Sardar Patel felt if the conditions became any worse then their bargaining power would only decrease. He preferred to negotiate when the things were still under control in the most parts of India. Sardar Patel was also wary of Soviet Union and the United States entering the fray, if a proper civil war broke out between Muslims and Hindu-Sikhs. So, he convinced the Congress leaders to negotiate while the British were still there and before the outbreak of a more widespread civil war. In those negotiations, Congress got their strategy right and saved many parts of India from going to Pakistan. They secured half of Punjab, all of Assam except Sylhet, a third of Bengal, Junagadh, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Bhopal, Hyderabad and majority of Jammu and Kashmir. Jinnah was so dismayed by Patel’s successful handling of Partition affairs that he called the Pakistan he got ‘a moth-eaten Pakistan’.

I want a logical answer to this question - The British came to India as traders and captured the whole of India. We fought for the freedom of our country India. In 1947 the British agreed to leave India and moved from Mumbai to England. Before leaving India, they divided its land into three parts, 1. India 2. West Pakistan 3. East Pakistan. Now the question is that , you will not find anywhere in history that when the British came to India, a country named Pakistan existed. When the name of Pakistan came into existence after the partition of India, then how can this celebration be called Independence Day instead of Foundation Day? Technically Pakistan was never under the rule of the British Government. That's why this day should be called India's Independence Day and Pakistan's Foundation Day.

Here whoever are saying that when Marathas ruled, i wanna say Peshwa Balaji Bajirao first expanded Marathas to central India and raided Delhi in 1737 to make sure they'll come under Marathas control. After third battle of Panipat in 1762, Marathas lost power to rule that big area so they shirnked to Central India.

Like Faisal I was born around the hanging of Bhutto. His intellectual journey reminds me of the time I spent under the tutelage of my teacher the late and great Dr Mehdi Hassan (May his soul rest in peace). As a teenager who had grown up on state sponsored propaganda through Pak Studies and PTV, and a very reductive, Americanised worldview thanks to Readers Digest and Time magazine in which we were fighting the ‘good’ wars, his lectures were the first time I was exposed to the truth and while it was, naturally, an uncomfortable journey at the outset, I’ve not looked at the world the same way again. Then the Internet happened and everything Dr Sahab said (and was persecuted for all his life) found corroboration and a whole lot more. Thank you Shahzad and Faisal for all you do. While iconoclasts of yore, like Dr Sahab, only had their classroom and students you are blessed with a much bigger platform. May you continue to spread the light.
