It’s a real shame!
@Hexon662 ай бұрын
It's not a shame, it's down to the partitioning of the conferences. The Bills were the best team in a very weak AFC. They were never more than the 4th or even 5th best team in the league when you stacked the up alongside the NFC. They lost to 3 different NFC teams, and the 49ers never even got a shot at them!

Buffalo actually gets some really nasty winter storms. They get what we call “lake effect snow” where frigid cold fronts come over from the Great Lakes and it turns into some nasty snow storms.
@davidsp5936 Жыл бұрын
It's the opposite end of New York State from New York City. It's significantly closer to Toronto than New York City. The key difference, climate-wise, is the lake effect. Winds coming off the Great Lakes make for outlandish snowfall totals and snowfall rates (sometimes several inches per hour).

Buffalonian here. Our weather is extreme. Summers like Miami, Winter like the North Pole. Thurman Thomas is worth watching. He went to the same school as Barry Sanders and kept Sanders on the bench as a backup. An injury made his draft position drop, the Bills picked him and he went on a revenge tour vs teams that passed him up.

Given that the Bills players were barely able to breathe by the end of the Dolphins game last year, I would not say their summers compare to Miami

@@lukem5396 what does that have to do with anything? None of the players are from Buffalo and very few if any live in Buffalo all year round. Even if they did, NFL plays Fall/Winter games. Buffalo, New York is in western New York state and at the opposite end of the state from NYC. The cities are 375 miles apart, and Buffalo is further north by 150 miles. Buffalo sits at the eastern end of Lake Erie, one of the so-called Great Lakes. The great amount of snow that is regularly dumped on the city comes from the lake effect that pushes moisture from the lake southward over the western New York region. The majestic Niagara Falls are 20 miles north of the city. All of the overflow water from Lake Erie passes over the falls and soon arrives in Lake Ontario, which creates the northern border of western New York state.

Buffalo’s 35-3 (32 point deficit) comeback was the biggest comeback in NFL history until the Vikings topped it with a 33-0 (33 point deficit) comeback the Colts last year. Interestingly enough, Frank Reich (the QB that led the Bills to the comeback in ‘93) nearly was involved in both of these games. He would eventually became the coach of the Colts in 2018 before being fired a few weeks before the Vikings completed their comeback.

I rooted for the Bills in all four Super Bowls. They were my go-to squad in Madden Football on the Sega Genesis & I even won a few hundred bucks from a mail-in fantasy playoff football game out of a magazine the year they miraculously came back vs the Oilers. But as a lifelong Lions fan who has witnessed exactly ONE playoff win in nearly 50 years, I have zero sympathy. For the record though, I still love Frank Reich, Andre Reed, Don Beebe & Kenneth Davis to this day for the cash they made me as a result of the greatest comeback in NFL history. A $480 profit to a 16 year-old kid in 1993 made me feel like a millionaire! And even better, is an incredible memory and a lesson in perseverance that I still haven't forgotten to this day. Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick of the NY Giants had an amazing defense, cemented by an incredible linebacking corps based on Hall of Famers LT (Lawrence Taylor) and Harry Carson, as well as Carl Banks. The Bills just got outcoached badly by the Giants. Instead of taking what was given to them, i.e. running against only 2 down linemen (the rest of the defense was covering every receiver, and even when they caught the ball they were hit and hit hard), the Bills still wanted to pass the ball. It wasn't until the last drive that they allowed Thurman Thomas to run, and had time not run out, they would have run the ball right down the throats of the Giants all the way to a touchdown. But time forced them to try a field goal in horrible conditions. And that's how LT got his second Super Bowl ring! Thurman Thomas was always a dominant running back, since way back in college. But in his senior year one of their opponents' coach told his defense to make sure NOT to injure Thurman! Because had Thurman gone down, he knew he would be replaced by a freshman named Barry Sanders, who was terrorizing opponents just through his kick and punt returns!

My uncle played for them in the 70s, second round pick, TE out of Ohio State. Played with OJ, was only there for two lackluster seasons because no one was doing George Kittle type things in 70s, TE only run blocked. Even though my uncle was, and is still, a freak of nature, he didn't really like playing football and hung 'em up after the 2nd season to go work with troubled youth and raise his family in Ohio (we aren't from there but he got heavily recruited by Woody Hayes and JoePa but ultimately chose correctly). So our whole family were Buffalo fans in the 90s, I remember watching these Super Bowls and being absolutely crushed as a kid. We remained fans until we all grew up and chose our own teams but these four Super Bowls will always be the worst I'd felt for a fanbase ever.

I know you guys have heard about this in other comments, but dunno if it's gone into detail. The prevailing winds in that region go from west to east, meaning air blows over the great lakes, picking up moisture, until it hits land. Buffalo is along those shores, so when that moisture rich air hits Buffalo it drops a LOT of snow. Feet of it. Winter may be colder in Green Bay, but nowhere in the NFL is snowier than Buffalo. Last year, in fact, neighbors had to plow Josh Allen out of his house so he could get to the game. It's literal meters of snow at times.

That year, Emmitt Smith held out in contract negotations and missed the first 2 games of the season. The Cowboys lost both of those games, including the 13-10 loss to the Bills. "Wide right!" Norwood's miss in Super Bowl XXV is the most heartbreaking moment in Bills history because that was the closest we came to winning it all. I'm 69 and a native of suburban Buffalo. The Bills were born in 1960 as part of the original American Football League. We won AFL championships in 1964 and 1965, then lost in 1966 to Kansas City, who went on to the first Super Bowl ever played. What I remember from those days is that we went into Super Bowl XXVI confident, even though we were lucky to beat Denver in the conference championships--I think the Broncos' kicker missed three field goals and they lost 10-7. But the Redskins just dominated us. We were confident again against Dallas in Super Bowl XXVII and then got run out of the stadium. I believe most fans were not hopeful in the rematch in Super Bowl XXVIII. Even though we led at halftime, we were just waiting for the wheels to come off, and they did. Today, Bills fans are living through similar disappointments that don't include a Super Bowl appearance. "13 seconds" is a new lament for us, referring to the amount of time left in regulation after we had taken the lead over Kansas City in an AFC semifinal game two years ago. KC tied the game and then won it in overtime. Last season, we got embarrassed by Cincinnati, who knocked us out of the playoffs on our home field. I personally believe that the current Bills crew has peaked and that we're starting a decline. But hey, Kansas City and Cincinnati both lost their season opener. So it's up to the Bills to win against the Jets Monday night and start on a roll to the playoffs.

Fast forward about 7 years and I’m a freshman at a James Madison University, a school at that time not known for football. First football game that year I’m there and they induct Scott Norwood into the school’s hall of fame. I’m thinking, “the guy known for wide right is one of the best this school had?”

As a lifelong Saints fan, I understand the pain of losing all too well. The only difference is Bills were at the pinnacle and lost; we were just dragging along the bottom from year to year. I don't know which one is more painful. This was the era of the QB, and Jim Kelly could certainly hold his own with the rest of them.

As a Lions fan, it’s a very different kind of pain. I’m just numb to it by now. After all, I can’t remember what it even feels like to win a playoff game, let alone know what the Super Bowl is like

No disrespect Lions fan, but your other sports teams have won multiple championships. Your hockey team might be the most iconic in the entire history of the sport. Imagine being from Buffalo and having nothing to fall back on. Nothing.

I never thought of them as an embarrassment. Sure, they lost 4 in a row. But, they had to get to the Super Bowl 4 times in a row, in order to lose 4 in a row. They were the team that was most fun to watch, through all 4 of those seasons. On a side note: Jim Kelly has beaten brain cancer twice. He's still going strong today.

I had family members who grew old and died without ever seeing Buffalo win a championship with the Braves, Bills or Sabres. Even at the very end of their lives when they were in nursing homes… you could STILL feel the pain and sadness of those Super Bowl losses on them. People have no idea how badly the citizens of Buffalo carry an unfair, hurtful weight around their shoulders. It’s a pervasive sadness that won’t go away. And here we are this year with the Bills losing heartbreakers again and again… but NOTHING like those Super Bowls. That was legitimately PTSD inducing. That’s why when anyone makes fun of Buffalo for that, I caution them to think about what they’re doing. Especially those players… like good god the guilt they carry around. They’re a dynasty and they’re not allowed to celebrate because after all those wins they didn’t get that one. What a horrible thing, for so many to endure.

Gale Gilbert, who was third-string quarterback for the Bill's in all of those years, also was on the team that lost the Super Bowl the following year, the San Diego Chargers.

There’s a video by barstool sports about the bills mafia and our tailgating traditions that’s worth watching. And as a younger bills fan, I wasn’t alive for those super bowls but I can’t even imagine the pain my family went through, the only thing I can compare it to is the 13 seconds kc game

From 1984 to 1996 a the NFC won 13 straight Superbowls. NFC was a much better conference over the AFC. Bills where the only good AFC team. It was more like as if the NFC was the Premier and the AFC was the Champions. NFC had all the players back then, and everyone knew it. People would say the NFC championship was the real Superbowl.

Being a Bills fan isn't easy but I promise you it worth it in the end. Nothing like traveling a couple thousand miles across the country and see another Bills fan who is a complete stranger and you both casually say Go Bills and go on your way. Nothing seals your fandom like the shared sting of crushing defeat. I was lucky enough to watch the full careers of all these guys as I just started playing pee wee football in the mid 80s and really got into football and grew up just a half an hour from the Bills stadium. Thurman I think is still the only player to lead the league in yards from scrimmage 4 years in a row. WR Andre Reed was 3rd all time in NFL history in receptions and yards when he retired. RB Thurman was top 10 all time rushing when he retired. Bruce Smith is still the all time leader in sacks with 200 and likely will hold it for a very long time. He was such a monster for nearly 20 years. So many great players from those Bills teams.

Buffalo is in northwest New York, on the Canada border. New York City gets less snow and more moderate temperatures due to being coastal.

Thurmon Thomas is definitely worth a look at but the run and shoot system was what made things easier for him because of the unpredictability that defenses had to be wary of.

Buffalo is on Lake Erie in NW New York. It's terrible weather comes from lake effect snow. Around Lake Erie, once the temperature drops and they get Arctic air blasts from Northern Canada, the only time it doesn't snow is when the lake freezes over. And that means days of sub freezing weather. The importance of Buffalo to the US was during the 1800s when the Erie canal was built between the Great Lakes and the Hudson River that runs directly into New York City. This made Buffalo an important port city moving a lot of agricultural goods, timber, ores, and furs that could be sold to the rest of the world. But once the lock systems were built on the Great Lakes making it possible for ships to pass all the way from Chicago to Montreal to the Atlantic Ocean, Buffalo's importance began ot diminish. It's now considered part of America's "rust belt" of old factories and ports no longer as heavily used. Still a great town and the most loyal fans in the NFL except for perhaps Green Bay. Buffalo joined the NFL as part of the AFL merger.

Frank Reich, the backup QB who completed the Bills insane comeback, is currently the head coach of the Carolina Panthers this year. It's his first year there after being fired from the Colts. Carolina went BIG in this year's draft to get their hopeful QB of the future. The Chicago Bears originally had the #1 pick. Carolina gave up the farm, the car, their next car and pretty much their firstborn son to move up to #1. What Carolina gave Chicago... - 2023 first rounder (#9 overall) - 2023 second rounder (#61) - 2024 first rounder - 2025 second rounder - WR DJ Moore, one of the best players on the team and only bright sparks on the roster. He himself was a first round pick back in 2018. So a first rounder player. We'll see how he does. I like Frank and he was handed a pretty crappy situation in Indy, which was going through a lets-take-every-washed-up-ancient-QB-on-a-retirement-tour phase for like 5 years and then their formerly stout offensive line absolutely shit the bed last year for reasons mostly unknown. Frank took the fall for everyone's on field play and was fired. I think he's a much better coach than he looks on paper and maybe with a QB who isn't pushing 40 years old he can show that over the next couple years. 😅

Frank Reich, the QB who led the massive comeback is now the Head Coach of the Carolina Panthers---a really smart guy who as a former QB drafted Bryce Young as the no. 1 pick and will be, along with the other coaches, a great teacher for the young guy.

As a life-long Broncos fan, I definitely felt for the Bills. In the 1980s, the Broncos went to 3 Super Bowls in 4 years, and lost all of them. Back then, losing the Super Bowl wasn't seen by fans in the league as you being the 2nd best team, but instead you were treated as the worst team in the NFL. Fan bases were better off if their team didn't even make the playoffs than if they lost the Super Bowl.

Giants fan here (family tradition), first year I got interested in football was 1990, when the Giants ended up beating the Bills in SB 25! Signed up for the local football team the next year, turned out I was really good and in the long run it got me college scholarship money. Thanks for LT and OJ Anderson and Mark Ingram, and of course Scott Norwood. 😊😊😊
