These teachers don't deserve a damn thing, when 3/4of students can't read or write or do mathematics at grade level!!

In 2023 Social Security recipients received an 8.1% raise due to the cost of living increases. If Chicago teachers are mandated to reside in Chicago, they must earn a wage that will allow them to do so safely. It’s very expensive to live in the safer neighborhoods of Chicago. Under performing schools and students throughout Chicago public schools has little to do with Chicago‘s teachers ability to educate and almost everything to do with the home and social environments of the students. The students are being raised In. These students navigate trauma in one form or another on a daily basis before they ever set foot in a CPS classroom. Those issues are not being resolved. therefore, CPS has a large population of students who are in perpetual survival mode. The students are not worried about being educated, they’re worried about whether they can survive another day. That is why there is a massive push for an increased presence of mental health and medical staff in every CPS building…this would help take the heavy (mental) load off classroom teachers. The students don’t leave their problems at the door. They bring those problems into the school buildings and more specifically into their classrooms. Not only do they negatively impact the educational environments, they oftentimes weigh heavily on the psyche of their fellow classmates as well as the psyche of the classroom educator. Another phenomenon that is not being factored into the equation is the increase of the use of non-prescription medications currently Plaguing the student population as a means of coping with the tiered traumas they experience. Because the students are not getting the mental health care they need classroom educators often serve as intercessors and are becoming increasingly overwhelmed. In their own effort to cope, they need to enlist their own mental health resources and or the use of a mental health day so they can continue to show up strong for the students that they serve. Please stop villainizing CPS teachers and CTU who fights to get their teachers and their students no less than what they deserve. This entire ordeal leaves me to wonder if the population of students were not overwhelmingly, black and brown would this even be a conversation?

The increase in $$ should be tied to student performance. Taxpayers would feel better if the kids were actually graduating or even reading at grade level.

Even the original American socialist, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, declared that there could never be public sector unions, calling it "unthinkable and intolerable" AFL-CIO President George Meany explained, "It is impossible to bargain collectively with the government." When a private company gives in too much to the union, the consequence is going out of business or bankruptcy ( at least until Barack Obama meddled with General Motors) Then the union contract is null and void; a livable contract is created out of the new situation. Customers will go elsewhere until the prices are brought in line. The issue with public sector unions is, the public is stuck paying for the union demands. While in the case of teachers' unions, families are opting to send their children to be privately educated - if they can afford it - to avoid anti - American indoctrination and exposure to inappropriate focus on libido and gender identification, but the obligation to underwrite the undesirable government schools is still upon them, in the form of their property tax bill. This is why vouchers would be a godsend to our educational system - for the kids. And their parents.

Well to begin we need a parent's advocate, parents participation, superintendents to be held accountable, along with a high quality education were the standards aren't low.

Always seeing these teachers pull up in their teslas but can barely teach kids US history, math and science. None of my nieces and nephews know the national anthem or pledge of alligance 👎

Have any items you discussed been put forth as part of the negotiation?

Yes, all of these items are in the CTU's proposed contract, which they are negotiating now. You can read their proposed changes for yourself here: files.illinoispolicy.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/FILE_0918.pdf
