To mark the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, Four Corners has carefully pieced together vision and audio captured by ABC reporters and crew that show how the events unfolded in the Spring of 1989.
This condensed version of ‘Tremble and Obey’ presents an incredible trove of footage from the ABC’s archive and shows scenes of joy and optimism on the streets of China that have not been seen since the Communist Party’s brutal killing of its own people 30 years ago.
The full film, Tremble and Obey, includes interviews with many of the key participants of the protest movement who were subsequently placed on China’s ‘most wanted’ list. Watch it here: • Footage shows what rea...

The problem is too much people in China today have everything except ideological freedom and freedom of speech. I can't imagine giving up all I have now and even your life to fight for freedom. I remember some journalists in France were killed by terrorists for their report years ago. I admire them but not every person in this world can become people like those journalists especially when your life in China is good enough to compromise.

China had everything to lose. But they didnt. Always in any historial event, take some time to reflect about the alternative and the results of that. I think the world has enough problems with refugees and insecurity. A billion chinese on the move out of a torn apart China would not have been a pretty sight for anyone.

@@gavinhou3261 Your comment is a fair one. That is part of the idea of why quality of life is so valuable a component of a nation's integrity. Keep the largest amount of people possible within reasonable quality of life expectations and they will be content with the status quo. I share your views regarding those who still report without compromise, valuing journalistic integrity above their own safety. I have freedom, but I am not strong willed enough to employ my freedom in such a way. I am also very content with my place in life and I think that is just fine and I'm glad you're doing well. Take care and thank you for sharing your perspective.

The issue then was that the Students and their supporters wanted reform and more freedoms for local government and economic opportunities. The Students and their supporters still believed that the party, Communist as it was, might be willing to compromise with them. The Communist's Party bosses back then, full of corruption and ambition were creating too many problems for everyday even loyal Communist Chinese people. Then a more Western influenced idea of True Freedom while the Party maintaining control of the economy more or less came to the front. The Chinese Comunist Party leaders could not surrender even the economic reform issue to the students and workers then. They cracked down on the protests nation wide, and made sure that it was never mentioned again in each anniversary making the event even more relevant over time. So, now the economic reform is in place but the regime is just as brutal regarding dissent as before.

They're actually really far from it. This is just a small part of Beijing. And they did not have popular support. We are just looking at a population here which is within the margin of error for the total population. You need a message that resonates with a majority of the people like black lives matter. Having a loud voice on the internet doesn't mean the rest of the world feels the same way, that's why Hillary lost the elections. The rest of the China were more focused on survival than trying to replace the political system, which in hindsight, looking at the current situation, might not be a bad idea.

Clearly China has become a prosperous country. People were willing to forgo the things these demonstraters were asking for in return for continual increases in standards of living (which the CCP has provided). But every economy goes through peroids of stagnation, and the growing middle class will become dissatisfied, which is what the CCP are now terrified of. Perhaps people will ask 'growth, yes. but at what cost?'

democracy does not work everywhere. Adolf Hitler was elected in democratic elections. Look at Iraq, they elected an Islamic corrupt government after the fall f Saddam by USA. This corrupt democratic government in Iraq wiped off minorities and killed more people than Saddam did in 30 years of rule. Human needs go just like Maslow's hierarchy of needs. IF you don't give people security and food, they don't care about your democracy. Stay out of people's business.

Most Chinese citizens aren't unable to watch KZbin. Those here toeing the party line are either: 1. Paid trolls - Given access to jump the great firewall to do their government's bidding. Paid by the post, hence short predictable comments. Weird user names that attempt to hide their Chinese origins. 2. Timid and curious: I really shouldn't be here, better leave a negative comment in case my presence is detected. 3. The bold and brainwashed: Full of nationalistic fervour. Usually Chinese nationals living abroad, unable to see the irony of defending the motherland while viewing a subject banned on the mainland. Long, obfuscating rants. Will resort to insult when challenged.
