"What I remember about the rise of the Empire is... is how quiet it was. During the waning hours of the Clone Wars, the 501st Legion was discreetly transferred back to Coruscant. It was a silent trip. We all knew what was about to happen, what we were about to do. Did we have any doubts? Any private traitorous thoughts? Perhaps, but no one said a word. Not on the flight back to Coruscant, not when Order 66 came down, and not when we marched into the Jedi Temple. Not a word."

+atreides213 not quite, we have to remember that the clone who narrates the campaign does so in past tense, as if he was aware of what he did, which means he still has creative thinking, but he was compelled to follow his orders, like what the biochip would've done. If anything, it makes the memoirs of the 501st even more bitter since you know this veteran soldier is clearly sad about the actions his army took at the end of the clone wars. If I remember correctly, after the felucia mission, he mentions how he feels all clones betrayed their Jedi allies.

The movies themselves may have been lacking but EU/Legends books and comics fleshed out the clones to a level of detail far in excess of what they could have ever done in the TV series. It's not really that surprising considering the target audience for the show and the fact that each episode was done like a 1950's weekly serial drama. Like NCR said, try the Republic Commando novel series and you'll see just the same amount of depth as they gave Rex but with even grittier action and moral questioning. Rex was the best character in TCW though.

I don't know Non-Canon Expert. I never really bought in to the mind control chip explanation from the new canon. Sure the clones were intelligent and creative, but they were also highly trained professional soldiers. Soldiers follow orders, especially those given by duly constituted authority. Out of the 150 contingency plans memorized by each Clone Trooper, Order 66 didn't seem any more likely than the others to occur, yet it "did" in one sense when the Jedi Council attempted to arrest Palpatine. Even then, not all of the troopers followed the order. Also, some of the Legends material mentions that Palpatine relocated cloning production away from Kamino after the Battle of Kamino, not trusting the Kaminoans. Fast grown clones grown in 1-2 years near Coruscant were more numerous in the later days of the war than Kaminoan clones. While they were admittedly less capable than Kaminoan clones, they also had less independence and practically no attachments to the Jedi they served. The re-write with the mind control chips cheapened the drama of Order 66 for me. They turned something that was rightly dark and frightening, worthy of deep sci-fi introspection maybe, into something befitting daytime TV, which since they aired this new "twist" on a kids TV show, really isn't all that surprising. I'm not bitter, but I am a bit bitter :P

@JaingSkirata
@JaingSkirata 8 жыл бұрын
Matthew McCallum happens more often than you would think. Look at any war from human history and you'll see similar actions by normal troops; and the clones weren't normal, they were the best troops in the galaxy and loyal to the Republic. The Jedi may have commanded them, but the clones didn't fight for the Jedi, they fought under them. They were fighting for the republic and their fellow clones more than any Jedi. Not every Jedi was a master tactician either or treated the clones under their command well, a lot of them got their troops killed because they had no experience commanding an army. When each individual commander received the Order 66 command from the chancellor he made his own decision. Any clone would know that if you have a rogue Jedi you can't take him alive. A non force sensitive can't read their intentions and they can be extremely dangerous enemies. Even then, not all of them followed the order, but enough did to wipe out the majority of the orders leadership and scatter the rest into hiding where they could be hunted down one by one.

I think the Legends explanation (emergency-order to eliminate rogue jedi) is much better. It was a normal order just like order 65. That also explains, why a few dozen clones didn't execute the order. But, well, all of that is Legends. And whoever was responsible for Clone Wars Season 5 was an utter idiot. Because a conspiracy biochip is... it works, but it is lazy as f*ck storywise. And bad as well...
@JaingSkirata
@JaingSkirata 8 жыл бұрын
I agree. The target audience changed so they changed the explanation. I guess that "forced against their will" is easier to understand than "followed orders despite internal conflict". It's a lot harder to convey the deep intricacies of the second choice in a 30 minute episode with original star trek level depth of story.

I like the biochip because do you really think even the most pro republic clone would murder the person they have been fighting with for three years and have probably gotten to know and respect.
@JaingSkirata
@JaingSkirata 8 жыл бұрын
Matthew McCallum I think they would and I think the story is better for it. Sure it might be terrible if they were forced, but that still leaves both sides a moral "out". The Jedi & the clones both could say they had no choice. It's much more grey and morally challenging if the clones did it of their own volition despite their reservations. Think of how it might have felt for a clone to get an order that signifies that the Jedi you have served has betrayed the republic you both swore to protect. For some, the order wasn't enough of course but many would have done it. It's not as morally tidy but it is closer to what the world is like,

I like the canon version of them having chips in their heads much more than in Legends where they do it because they were trained that way (it makes more since in canon) but the way it is executed has a few plot holes, I mean Sidious never hits any button to make them turn he just tells them to kill their jedi generals so that would mean the chips are voice activated but that is a little odd because nothing in Star Wars is voice activated

It is amazing to see how many Repubic Commando (novel) fans have gathered in this comment section. Yeah, Traviss' characterization of the clones and her in-depth explanation of the regular army and its workings was arguably the best one in all of Star Wars. I also prefer her version of what made (most) clones obey Order 66 over anything TCW has to offer.

Another good question. How did an ex-Jedi Council member pay for said clone army? I doubt he would of been able to use the Jedi Council's or Republic Government's credits for something that expansive without raising some red flags, nor the Cloners taking an I.O.U. that big. I personally like the use of the brain chips. After watching The Clone Wars it made sense because after seeing the Clones fight alongside the Jedi for all that time & the strong friendships they formed with them it's hard to believe they followed Order 66 completely of their own free will. Plus watching Episode III it does seem very robotic & cold the way the Clones carry out their order, it's as if they really are in a trance. Also it's more emotionally crushing to me the idea that the Clones had no clue as to what they would be made to do at the war's end instead of them being aware if it the whole time. It gives two reasons to be upset about Order 66; for the betrayal & murder of the Jedi & the fact that the Clones were forced to kill their leaders whom they respected, afterwards the remorse they likely felt for what they did & the horror of being used like that probably made them feel like they really were no better than droids. The Clones were victims of Order 66 in their own right too & that makes the whole thing even more devastating.

Basically, the Jedi didn't read the manual when they accepted their slave army. Let's not forget that in the legends EU, the contingency orders, all 150 of them including Order 66 were right there for everyone to read. The Kaminoan's told the Jedi that they were engineered the Clones to be perfect soldiers, loyal and obedient to the Republic . The Jedi Order was too blind and had its head shoved too far up the force to even question the circumstances of the armies creation or consider the real possibility that they army could be misused. They paid the price for their mistakes in the lives and blood of their order and 30 years of Imperial rule.

My guess is that none of the Original Trilogy would've ever happened, Anakin and Palpatine would've been hunted down and killed due to being traitors and not having the clone army to act as their initial protection. Then Padme would've had her kids, and it's hard to say what she would do in such a grief stricken state, but my guess would be that she'd either hang around and allow them to become Jedi, or run away with them into the far reaches of the galaxy.

The Republic did have an army. But that was way back in the days of Knights of the old republic when the sith was just as large scale as the Jedi were. After the Sith were gone and no other empire really threatened the republic their army just supposedly disbanded.

wait, in original canon wasn't order 66 the contingency order for Jedi's that betrayed the republic?

In the original canon Order 66 was an order issued if the Jedi gone against and threatened the republic marking them as enemies.

Yes, the clones had over 150 contingency orders for emergency situations and those orders had to be executed without question. The clones knew of order 66 and that eventually they would have executed it. "What I remember about the rise of the Empire is… is how quiet it was. During the waning hours of the Clone Wars, the 501st was discreetly transferred back to Coruscant. It was a silent trip; We all knew what was about to happen, what we were about to do. Did we have any doubts? Any private traitorous thoughts? Perhaps, but no one said a word. Not on the flight to Coruscant, not when Order 66 came down, and not when we marched into the Jedi Temple. Not a word" 501st Trooper It made more sense that years of hard training and obedience to the Republic made them execute the order than a fucking microchip

my explanation Canon Clones - bio-chips forced them but they didn't lose their beliefs since in CW tup gets activated but then comes to his senses and regrets what he did. he also suffered some psychological distress from murdering his friend. so we can assume the clones had to live with that. EU Clones - it was just an order and yeah they felt bad but knew what was about to happen. which kinda makes them scummy backstabbers

Too bad there was no USO or Galactic Republic O show where their Bob Hope would have his team extract all the chips when they were watching a performance beamed into their brains. Guess old orders had to fall. The prequels and non canon put a heavy emphasis on division that the Jedi or non jedi in the original trilogy didn't have. Sith not specifically mentioned.

What about the hundreds of clones slaughtered by jedi? They weren't in their right mind, were they? The clones lost many great men that day, without it even being their fault directly.

Why would Wolffe, Gregor and Rex not tell anakin and obi-wan and the entire jedi counsel and the other clones about the chips and what they do? that doesn't make any sense because rex being close friends with Cody would surely tell him about the chip.

that bio chip thing was garbage, in battle front two history of 501st the clones knew about executing the jedi order. They were trained and genetically modified to follow orders and be totally obedient. They just made that up in the clone wars cartoon to make the clones more sympathetic. The cartoon also turned the clones into a worse fighting force they originally were in that they were trained under Jango Fett and were elite troops not that crap that the cartoon made them out to be.
