The elderly man with the deep wrinkles the ghostly white skin and the red around his eyes is Sheev Palpatine. When Darth Bane got the information about the Ritual he modified it and from it created the thought bomb. So the thought bomb is basically a modified version of the Ritual of Nathema.

Like Luke said, Sidious's overconfidence and arrogance became his downfall, especially when Palpatine acted/behaved like a spoiled brat with zero honor towards his apprentices. Bane was the true Sith Lord because he respected Zannah and taught confidence with humility instead of fear and pain; therefore, Bane's method of training Zannah leads to much better results than what Palpatine did to Vader and his past apprentices because Sidious really is an untamed immature wild animal fearing his own downfall.
