Pretty sure it's both really, given how the Cohen brothers are. I've heard a story about them working with Sam Elliot on Big Lebowski, where they kept making him do the monologue scene at the end over and over and over. And finally Sam was getting frustrated and blurted out "what am I doing wrong?! TELL ME!" and the Cohen's were like "Damn, sorry man, we just, really liked listening to you talk so we kept making you do the take." So the idea that they would fuck with him with this scene, but also use it as a bit of dialogue testing, seems perfectly natural to me. They aren't mutually exclusive states. xD

Josh came into my Bakery and we were chatting. I teased him and said “You were in the Goonies, right?” And he laughed and said that he was just in No country for Old Men. He explained the Templeton Jacket. I have to say, he’s in some movies like American Gangster and I had to double check if it’s him. He’s like Into Character that I forget it’s him or don’t recognize. In No Country for old men, he’s Josh the entire time though.

If I remember correctly he says "Yep" because he's putting it all together in that moment, he instantly knows how the satchel came to be there and how it's all likely to end for him. This is a hunter, who knows the ways of animals and the lay of the land. But he also knows that there are exotic animals and exotic lands, and that he's just stumbled into something that's likely to get him killed, but that he can't really do anything about it because his nature is that he has to take this chance.

I was in high school, the 10th grade from 07 to 08. I saw No Country in the fall of 07 and in December saw the trailer for TDK and Heath's Joker instantly reminding me of Javier's Anton. When I saw the movie TDK I got similar vibes. When I was watching No Country Anton reminded me of Bill The Butcher from Gangs of New York. These comparisons arent asserting a parallel in similar personality traits of the characters but rather a similarity in complete immersion of the characters by the actors. Really nice and gentle people in real life, playing absolute savages.

I think the joke is that he thinks Ethan would care that deeply into Moss’s expression. Josh does because that’s the character he has embodied. It probably wasn’t important at all to Ethan, but Ethan noticed that it was important to Josh and thus let him find what he needed. And in the end it probably doesn’t matter, but it’s laughable that they had to go through that silly discussion over a grunt to just “get there”.

As the guy that watched the movie several times, I got to say...it actually added to the tension of the scene, and left you conscious of what is going on inside of main character's head. Even when he woke up in the middle of the night and said: "Yeah..." as he proceeded to gather water and bring it to the desert to the guy in the truck. He was talking to his own conscience, or to be exact his conscience was saying he was wrong for leaving him without water. That movie is very impactful, because it's slow on dialogue, and when it happens, it is even more impactful than the silence before it.
