Questions: 1) How long can you reuse face masks (standard blue white surgical masks from hospitals) and gloves before you need to dispose them? This is coming from someone that only opens the door for mail and only goes out for grocery about once every 2-3 weeks. 2) Do you need to wipe down door handles/surfaces prone to touching, to kill possible potential viruses? 3) Does the virus "expire" if left on surfaces for a prolonged period of time? If so how long? Commenters please upvote comments with questions so people asking similar questions can see them more readily
@seabb4 жыл бұрын
Some quick answers: 1) Cloth masks can and should be washed after each use, either in the washing machine or by hand washing. Surgical masks aren't designed to be reused after a session of use, but if you have to reuse one, the best option would be to leave it stored in a container for 72 hours to help it dry and inactivate any viral particles. (Source: www.google.com/amp/s/www.allure.com/story/how-to-reuse-throw-away-surgical-mask-n95-cloth-face-covering/amp) 3) Early studies have shown that a detectable amount of virus particles can stay on some surfaces from a number of hours to even days. Remember though that the number of viable virus particles decays rapidly the longer it's outside of a host, and the likelihood of any one person getting sick is dependent on if the amount of the active virus overwhelms the immune system. We don't know that infection threshold though, so better to excercise caution and wipe down frequently touched surfaces, especially if you live with many people or essential workers who have to go out. Source: www.healthline.com/health/how-long-does-coronavirus-last-on-surfaces#different-surfaces Why you should wear masks (and how to use them): kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmOaeYV5obKZaLc CDC's cleaning guide on disinfecting your home: www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/cleaning-disinfection.html It's good to do your own research and find out the most recent recommendations to follow. We can get through this together, stay safe guys!

Question: Can Covid travel on particles exhaled during smoking and vaping? Wouldn't this increase the distance it could infect people at?
@BlueDoubleSharp4 жыл бұрын
For vaping, likely yes as it does use small water vapor and aerosolized oils. It wouldn't really increase the distance aside from the user trying to project it further, it would definitely increase the time that it lasts in the air and on surfaces, however, as the humidity would be far higher. I'm not to sure about the smoking as the heat might damage the oil shell of the virus, but if it could survive this heat then definitely.

There seems to be a lot of confusion on the effectiveness of masks....perhaps a good future topic?
@i.robles57854 жыл бұрын
The problem seems to lay within the specific material of the mask and utilizing it properly. For example, it must be over the nose. I've seen folks just pull it down so the nose is not covered. Useless. And then when you touch your face with your hands even when masked. It defeats the purpose of the mask when you do that because the virus can enter via the eyes.
@kissit0124 жыл бұрын
Masks are effective when they are used properly and made of the correct materials. Most people are not using either.
@hautakleightontam7714 жыл бұрын
The short answer is that they're not THAT great at protecting you, but they are indeed better than nothing according to randomised control trials and observational studies, with cloth masks being the worst and medical-grade masks being best. With that said, you have to wear them properly or not at all, and the safest measure is still remaining in isolation. www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.04.01.20049528v1
@uznnal4 жыл бұрын
There was a post in imgur and I think on reddit that show the effectiveness of all masks when sprayed with water (sneeze test). Only the standard surgical masks from hospitals and the heavy duty N95 masks acted as a barrier stopping any water droplets going through, all the self made ones failed to prevent it. The downside to the standard masks is how it doesn't fully close off openings to the mouth and nose with every inhale/exhale, whereas the N95 is made in such a way that it fully conforms to the mouth and nose -preventing openings, and could be oven baked to kill off potential viruses thus making N95 reusable.

@@KQEDDeepLook please make a video on how to identify symptoms of coronavirus.
@revenevan114 жыл бұрын
@@ramu992 part of the problem is that while there are super common symptoms such as the respiratory issues, we're still learning the less common ones (just like other diseases can have rare symptoms but we've been able to study the common cold for decades so we already know most of them, or how medications can have rarer side effects but we do clinical trials to try to find them). Also people can have just the rare symptoms like loss of sense of taste, or be completely asymptomatic (not even a fever) and still be a contagious carrier of the virus. It's best to assume you're infected and that everyone else is infected and that you're not and that they're not but you are... you get the idea. You have to treat it as though you could spread it and thus take precautions to not do so, but also imagine that you could catch it from even asymptomatic people and thus take that set of precautions as well. This possible lack of symptoms is one of the reasons why testing (and the shortage of tests) is such an issue. We're all in this together, and every single person who wears a mask and washes their hands frequently and avoids touching their face ect makes an important difference! I hope this helps answer your question. I still would like to see a video on all the symptoms we know of so far, but it's important to realize that it could do more harm than good if people think they *know* how to identify symptoms and so feel certain that they can stop wearing a mask if they don't have the symptoms, or stop social distancing with people who don't have the symptoms, precisely because that doesn't mean they don't have it.

Can makeshift face masks (cloth, etc.) help in reducing the transmission of COVID-19?
@nogunk1474 жыл бұрын
Coming from someone who's had it before. It is rather concerning. Often times it was a bit uncomfortable to breath. But treat it as you would any other illness. Lots of rest and water. Increase vitamin intake as well. Eat lot of immune system boosting foods. Acetaminophen is helpful to maintain the coughs. I was very scared when I tested positive especially since I have asthma but just use common sense and fight it off you would any viral infection. I've since come back negative and am very grateful things didn't take a nasty turn. If you start feeling a scratchy, dry, mildly burning sensation in the back of your sinuses when you take a deep breath it's a good idea to get tested. It was a big tell for me.

It also seems to go after the heart as well. Our bodies are very complex and fragile in many ways. Moving oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body requires many forces acting in concert. Disrupt one part (oxygen efficiently entering the bloodstream) and a bunch of other things go out of whack to offset it - blood pressure, heart rate, etc.
