I'm of Spanish ancestry and I am very proud of it. Much love to our Christian brothers and sisters. In time of war we stick together against our real enemy.

RCH, why do you think that the notion of crusading raised in the West rather than the East? One would think that the Byzantines and Eastern or even Near Eastern Oriental Christianity would of developed the notion of a righteous holy war in wake of the Islamic threats to their existence rather than their Western counterparts.

I at least believe to a significant part this has to do with the overall difference how the eastern and western church, the eastern churches are set up as mainly autonomous entities often defined by national borders or spheres of influence, and as such are tied to specific crowns, and because of this relationship the concept of holly war is not really necessary or feasible. In contrast the Western Church evolved into a international cross border organization with a central authority this allowed a universal movement like the Crusade to be created.

In all the East the islamic attacks were a reality, in some countries of the West they were a menace.

While that is true it it is not a reason for Eastern Christianity to develop a concept of holy war akin to the Crusades.

Any Eastern Roman campaign was not exactly meant to free the Holy land. The Romans were trying to restore Roman territory or at least lands with Christians in them. If it was possible to save Christian minorities through dealings then that was done. Moreover, remember Alexius wanted the crusaders to give back the land as he saw this as a chance of a Roman restoration of Asia Minor.

@@theodoresmith5272 and were completely defeated in tablada, pretty close to sevilla. The viking army of over 3000 strong was decimated. As a matter of fact, the nordic prisoners taken by the spanish muslims settled there and later on especialized in the making of cheese and became famous in the region for that

I understand your use of Spain is for the sake of brevity in this video, but it's still a historical anachronism that annoys me. Other than that, good video!

It's really not anachronistic. Although the Iberian Peninsula contained a variety of kingdoms and states, the whole of the region was still known as Hispania even in ancient times, so the region itself had a character and an identity that came far before the modern state of Spain. When historians use that term even today, and they certainly do, that's what they're talking about. I understand it still bothers some people. But it's not incorrect at all. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it.
