El Cid is one of the greatest heros of the reconquista! The other one was that brave woman, queen Isabella of Castilla! She was as brave as any man. Instead of spending her life in confortable luxury, she travelled like any male warrior to be close to the front and encourage her soldiers! She was a great politician, a great patriot, a truely great woman (more so as any feminist of our days) and also a great christian! Her only problem is, that she didn't like the jews. And that's why the english and american documentary market ignores her. Well, Isabella is my female hero of the reconquista!

It is bealived that Cid comes from "Sid", an arabian word, that means more/less Lord. They gave him this treatment beacause he defended Zaragoza (arab city in that moment). Also some others thinks it comes from "asada" (also arabian word) that means "lion". Thats why the coat of arms of Zaragoza city appears a Lion. People called him in such way when he enter the city walls to thank him to be so brave.

Your mixing of Spain with Iberia is disappointing. Specially for a Portuguese listener.
@goodaimshield11156 жыл бұрын
At that time Spain was the whole peninsula. "Iberia" is a relatively modern invention, no one called Spain Iberia back then, it was called just that, Spain.
@RealCrusadesHistory6 жыл бұрын
Definitely not trying to minimize Portugal. We do have to remember though that I'm not talking about the modern country of Spain, I'm talking about the region at that time. Spain is a word recognizable to English speakers and works better in an English language presentation. I have also done many videos on the Portuguese specifically. I've done one on the Siege of Lisbon and the Battle of Ourique.
@campelodemagalhaes6 жыл бұрын
Spain was created in 1492, thus it did not existed at the time. Iberian is the name of the Peninsula given to it by the Iberians, thousands of years ago. The term Spain (España) comes from Hispania, the name of the Roman Province. Hispania is around 2.000 years old, Iberia is much older.
@goodaimshield11156 жыл бұрын
Ricardo Magalhães The kingdom of Spain was created in 1469, rather than 1492, or we could even argue that it was not created, since it was not complete, till the year 1512. But I am not talking about the KINGDOM of Spain, nor the CROWN of Spain, I am talking about SPAIN. What truly NEVER existed was Iberia. The Iberian Peninsula did exist, but Iberia and Iberians (to refer to everyone in the peninsula and not just the eastern Iberian tribes) were terms and concepts that began to be used in the late 19th early 20th century. No one in the Middle Ages nor Early Modern Era would have called themselves "Iberian" nor belonging to "Iberia", but "Spaniard/Spanish" (obviously Portuguese would also consider themseleves Portuguese along with Spanish) belonging to Spain and/or Portugal. That's it. If you don't want to believe it that's your problem, not mine. The name Iberia to signify the whole Peninsula was not given by the native "Iberian" population, but by the Greeks, and they quickly decided to use the term Hesperia or Hesperia Ultima in replacement to the term Iberia. The only ones who called themselves Iberians (and they did NOT refer to the whole peninsula as such) were the eastern tribes. The rest were Aquitanians, Celts, and the two pre-Celtic tribes known as the Lusitani and Vettones. These people were neither Iberians nor identified as such, let alone named the Peninsula Iberia. That was a Greek thing since they only had relations with the easter Iberian tribes (who never used the word Iberia to refer to the entire Peninsula). And again, soon they replaced the term with Hesperia. The concept we have of Iberia and Iberians is of new creation. The truth is that everyone in the Peninsula since roman times up till the late 18th/early 19th century identified as Spanish in all its variants. The name Hispania by the way was given by the Phoenitians under its original form Ispania, Carthage will use the same name, and later on Romans would add the letter H and use the most known form of Hispania. And both Ispania (given by the Phoenitians) and Iberia (given by the Greeks) are terms that date back to roughly the same time, 900-600 b.C, 2600-2900 years ago. And actually, the Phoenitians where the first non-Iberian people (as in antive to the peninsula) that arrived to the place, so actually the term Ispania is significantly older than the term Iberia. By the way, the first mane the Greeks used to name the Iberian Peninsula was Ophioússa (land of serpents/snakes), it was later on, after the contact with the eastern Iberian tribes, that htye often hears the word Iber adn changed the name to Iberia/Iberian Peninsula.

Funny part is: no one has a ego more fragile than the Spanish. A common joke is, for example: Di Stefano is the best football player of the world, and perhaps of Spain. Or just another one: My biggest desire is to be like my father... so that I can have a son like ME!
