Official visit of the Ukrainian President and First Lady
The visit emphasises the Danish support and backing for the Ukrainian defence, with focus both on the specific military support and the long-term support for the country and its people.
On several occasions, The Queen has expressed her strong support for the Ukrainian people, and, following the official reception and photographing, Her Majesty had the opportunity to present the President a special gift: a painting titled 'The Tree of Life'. Painted by Her Majesty herself in the 1990s at Marselisborg Palace.
Denmark-Ukraine relations refers to the current and historical relations between Denmark and Ukraine. Denmark recognized Ukraine on 31 December 1991, and diplomatic relations were established on 12 February 1992
Denmark supports Ukraine in line with the Eastern Partnership and has contributed to reforming various Ukrainian sectors. Denmark has been described as a key partner for Ukraine.[1] Denmark is a member of the European Union, which Ukraine applied for in 2022. Both countries are members of the Council of Europe and the United Nations.
Ukraine is advancing its reform process and adapting legislation that promotes gradual economic integration and deepening political association with the European Union. Denmark is committed to supporting these reforms which contribute to the transformation of Ukraine into a modern European state, since Denmark recognizes that democracy, the rule of law, fundamental freedoms and a well-functioning market economy are prerequisites for EU membership.
The Ukrainian presidential couple also presented The Queen with a painting.
After the presentation of the gift and the traditional signing of the guest book, The Queen hosted an official luncheon in the Reference Library.
In addition to the President and First Lady and the Crown Prince Couple, the luncheon was also attended by the Prime Minister, the Minister of Defence and the Ukrainian ambassador to Denmark.
HRH The Crown Princess participated 20 August 2023 in the official reception of Ukraine’s presidential couple, HE Volodymyr Zelenskyy and First Lady Olena Volodymyrivna Zelenska.
