A lot more work for you guys now. You'll be doing this more than once a year. Congrats, Utah. Welcome to the NHL.

ActuallyI’ve read they will put the ice down once and it will remain all season; they put the basketball court on top of it before each BB game.

@@troyholl99 Like all other buildings that have both sports. They will still have to do the work to convert back and forth now.

@@daboys1215 Yes but not quite in the same way, the ice itself will just remain under the court.

looks like they will be doing this at least 41 times staring in the fall of 2024

You realize they don't melt the ice to switch from hockey to basketball in multi-purpose arenas? The ice is covered with an insulated surface and the court goes ontop. Then when it's time for hockey again they just uncover the ice.

I still don’t understand how this works, are they going to be able to put the floor back down over the ice in between games or do they have to melt the ice every time? For clarity sake I am definitely a purist and think there should be separate arenas specifically built for each sport.

Ok, so I’ve seen many such videos on this subject. They typically keep the ice as long as they can, according to arena events. After a hockey gane, the crew will detach and raise the protective netting behind the goals high into the rafters. They remove all the glass and most of the boards (some boards are kept in place cuz they don’t interfere with basketball, etc seating). Then they put an isolation/rubber matting over the ice before putting the basketball floor down over the mats. The matting protects the ice and also keeps the wooden floors from “sweating” like a cold soda can on a humid day. They extend the end seating sections to accommodate a traditional basketball layout and begin laying out the wooden floor, which has been stored underneath the seating bowl in stacks of square pieces. Finally, they’ll bring out the portable backboards, benches , scores table and court side seats. The only time they’ll typically melt the ice (because it’s so time consuming to replace) is if the arena has scheduled an even that requires a concrete surface…examples might be a rodeo or dirt bike race where truck loads of dirt are hauled in and spread around over the concrete.

So it’s not a permanent ice rink underneath? Looks like a concrete floor and they just flood it with water. I don’t understand. Doesn’t look how other nhl arenas are

There are pipes underneath the concrete that bring it to the correct temperature to create ice.

That’s how all hockey arenas do it. And yes there’s pipes that help chill the concrete and heat it up at the end of the hockey season to help melt the ice. During hockey season the ice stays in all season. They place rubber mats over the ice and the basketball court is built ontop of the ice rink. The chiller system in the concrete helps keep the ice from melting along with the rubber mats ontop. At the end of the hockey season they melt the ice and it goes back to uncovered cement flooring for concerts or whatever they have on the arena floor.
