The Florida Panthers beat the Carolina Hurricanes in game 2 from another Matthew Tkachuk OT winner. After the game, coach Rod Brind'amour talked about the frustration of not being able to win a game like that. In this video, we break down the tiny things that the Panthers did that frustrated the Carolina Hurricanes... and how they have been able to do it so consistently in these playoffs.

Tkachuk's physical and mental influence on other players is super evident in Barkov's playstyle. Years prior, Barkov had very little physicality within his gameplay, and that has altered completely as Tkachuk joined FLA. We can see Barkov aggressively forechecking almost every game. especially during GM1 this series.

Just wanna say that this analysis from you is absolutely incredible. Most hockey fans don’t realize just how much the mental game can affect both players, and in this case the entire performance of a team. Florida has essentially mastered the art of frustrating their opponent. This video will help many fans realize just how big of a factor the mental game is in the playoffs.

Once these athletes make it to the pro-level, its virtually all mental; as it is in almost all performance based industries. They're all essentially peak physical specimens, with minor variations, but the main difference is their mental game. It is especially visible with top rated rookies vs. their 2-3-4th years. When they first come in, they're usually nervous or over-thinking etc. and thus performance suffers. But once they acclimate and break through that mental wall - their performance takes off.

The whole team is benefitting from having Tkachuk.. but I think the biggest impact he's had on a player so far is Bennett. That dude has elevated his game to a totally different level, and I wholeheartedly believe Tkachuk plays a huge role in that. He's also clearly took the pressure off of Barkov, and he's been playing lights out as well. I'm not a fan of either team in this series, I just really love watching competitive close hockey, and if anybody deserves the Cup, it's gotta be the Panthers. They don't look like robots out there, they just all look like they are showing up to the rink, and having a blast while playing. It's gotta be quite scary to other teams to see a group this close, and clicking this well.
@linkage432
@linkage432 11 ай бұрын
Bennett hasn’t scored but has been crucial at causing turnovers and putting pressure on the other team. Barkov is a super shy soft spoken guy so to have Tkachuk be the polar opposite allows Barky to just be comfortable. And then he gives you that fancy around the foot goal😮
@tml1224
@tml1224 Жыл бұрын
This will ruffle feathers but Tkachuk is a more valuable asset to a playoff team than McDavid, he is force in all 3 zones battles hard defensively witch limits offensive production yet he is still incredibly offensively efficient especially in key moments. I don’t think we even have to mention how he gets other players off of their game because of his physical play and chirping

Our last few playoff appearances have been brutally frustrating for us, teams kept finding ways to rip our hearts out. Devils in 2012 game 7, Islanders in 2016 game 6, the Lightning twice in a row, all after regular seasons of having legitimate hope. This year we hadn’t had much to get excited about, we squeak in the playoffs, and we’re getting our revenge by ripping the hearts out of everyone we face. Our franchise is tired of all the heartbreak, and it makes this magical run even more satisfying.

Hey, why does everyone say that Bob is doing and no one says that after 3-1 in the series with Boston, Florida's game changed from A to Z, they began to play hard and not fly thoughtlessly into attack, they began to devote more time to defense. The coaching staff works out at 100%. Well, mentally now the Panthers have greatly intensified. Bob was always a great goalkeeper, only the way the panthers played was difficult for him to rebuild + injuries + he is very dependent on the mental component of the goalkeeper, so now everything has turned out for Florida. Good luck on your Stanley Cup run, we're rooting for you!!!

Between this series and the Toronto series, I expected Game 2 to go a certain way and they both did. My whole thing is surviving. Both Toronto and Carolina were going to come out guns blazing in that first period and you go back to last night and game 2 vs. Toronto and you saw that. If we only allowed one goal in the first, ANYTHING can happen and that's exactly what happened. Both teams came out. Got a lead. Couldn't add anymore. Tide of the game changes. Panthers survive. Bob has been insane and the team is scratching and clawing out wins the way a playoff team should be. They are keeping the top stars quiet and we are coming in CLUTCH in the most crucial situations. It's been insane to watch. Game 3 I expect the same thing. Carolina is gonna go out there like the series is over if they lose (which..I mean...they have to) and if we can survive that first period, anything is possible.

Feels so good to see a team I followed for so long, have the pieces back in place to show the rest of the league that Florida can play hockey. Like another comment said, you seem to be the only person willing to talk positively about the Panthers. Hell, even Charles Barkley on NBA on TNT is singing Tkachuk’s praises, but when it comes to commentary and play-by-play on the games, no one seems to give the Panthers the respect they have earned. On top of that the Miami Heat are blazing their way through the Eastern conference finals. The most frustrating part about their run is people saying they've gotten lucky, don't deserve it, and blah blah blah. While they have had bounces go their way, and often times been outplayed, luck doesn't win you 11 out of 15 games. Not to mention coming back from a 3-1 deficit.

VAMOS GATOS 😻😼 Great analysis, last year we got swept second round and it felt like it was that one good year since 96 Seeing them this regular season, didnt instill confidence But they have grown into their own and have elevated during playoffs which is what eluded us last year Panthers won presidents trophy and scored tons of goals and got to the top of the division in 22 But didnt have the elevated play during the playoffs to win tough games, Huberdeau for Tkachuk has flipped things on their head Tkachuk is a big difference for sure along with Bobrovsky But it really takes having those players and mental fortitude to move past the obstacles this team has faced The Bruins and Leafs were great teams - we just believed in ourselves and leadership from the top and they have inspired us to do that - its a great organization, and a winning mentality starts from the top Thats how you play these gruelling series , come from behind wins, and "frustrate" the opponents Your game has to be elevated, but you have to believe you can do it - it sounds like an old adage, but anyone watching has to agree, the mind is the only thing that will get you back from a 3-1 series against the top seed, or going the distance in 4OT against a stellar North Carolina, with the drama of disallowed goals to boot You are what you believe, and the cats are convicted of their ability to play at the highest level, and to win Its easy to say so and so blew a series, or that so and so choke in 1st or 2nd round, in the end they are all great teams, its the NHL - it takes everything and more to go the distance - Hoping the cats keep the miracle alive

Your Teräväinen rushing his shot because Bob is frustrating them I 100% agree with. Used to seeing the Caps go through this frustration in 09’-17’ playoff series. Question will be can Carolina shake this? It only takes 1 game but Panthers are playing solid D up the middle and making Carolina work for every shot. Cats in 5.

Canes’ style of play typically has them playing incredible hockey for long stretches but not always being clutch in key moments. It’s partly due to not having the superstar players able to capitalize in clutch moments. They tried to address this in the offseason, but injuries set those efforts back. Also, let’s not forget the Cats were President Trophy winners the season prior. They are fundamentally a really good team obviously as they dispatched Boston and Toronto already.

If they were doing this last year nobody would have batted an eye, but you just see that 8 seed. After coming back from down 1-3 vs Boston I stopped looking at that seed. I just see a team finally fulfilling their potential. They can score, play defense, have a great goaltender, and a playoff tested coach. Toronto had a better regular season, but they are soft. Florida was better, I expect Carolina to come back. But I think Florida can win in more ways. Six more games to go Panthers fans, they are gonna be the six toughest yet.Good Luck.

Great breakdown. You have to think the Panthers have the it factor this playoffs, puck luck and great goaltending everything seems to be playing into their favor they like these kinda games. Maurice has finally the last 25 games figured out lines that work, getting Lomberg back on the 4th line is really exciting too considering he’s got the biggest motor and is 3rd line material playing w Eric Staal who should be in men’s league and Colin White (who I will say has played a very strong role even with no points this post season) he’s noticeable more so with Lomberg but the chemistry and depth is something Tallon (past GM) and Zito (current) should be proud of. Sad tho for Tallon he never seemed like the kinda guy that could figure it out he was good at assembling the major pieces but let’s be honest, if you were GM and had the 1st overall pick you would have took Ekblad and Barkov at 2 as well…

Yes. I agree. I watched every game just about this year. Come Feb they ramped it up, and slowly became a force. Every night was practically a must win. Bob is finally living up to that paycheck. He has been incredible. Tkchuck has changed the demeanor, and he and Jimmy Buttler own this town at the moment. I'm not a Heat fan, but the subtle interaction between the two and support for each franchise is fun to watch. Let's Go Panthers!

Good analysis, I do believe Tkachuk has influenced this team to have the playoff success they are having and I don't want to minimize Bobrovsky in this-he has been amazing. I think that the Tkachuk effect (and great goaltending that picked up at the end) are the reason Panthers made the playoffs. The rest is a fever dream. I bought game 6 tickets, but I am thinking with a 2-0 lead in the series, we might not see a game 6.

Still wish the officiating would be consistent from regular season to playoffs. Either stick the the strict officiating or keep it open and let the physical dominate. Don’t care which it is but teams have to choose which way to build their team. Thankfully floridas build just squeaked in and now they’re unstoppable. Good for them, it’s very fun to watch. Gotta piss ya off if your a skill team likes the leafs and oilers haha

Replace the refs with robots. Panthers fan here btw. Put cameras everywhere, chip the players jerseys, but sensors under the ice. I don’t care but make it fair. And that goes for all sports. Refs add in a variable that you can’t practice for. Some would argue that makes it more “fun” but my ADHD riddled brain needs it to be uniformed. If it’s a penalty in game 1 of the season then it’s a penalty in the ECF. Can’t express how frustrated this makes me 😂

One thing I've noticed with the Canes is despite the high volume of shots, they don't seem to be dangerous. Lots of shots tend to hit the goalie in the chest. And the ones that are dangerous Bobrovsky has been doing an excellent job. Also keep in mind lots of post hits... if a couple of those were an inch inside the post we'd be having an entirely different discussion about how Canes are the most feared team in the league. Overall I think Canes have been playing better and have been unlucky to some degree. One thing is that they could at anytime explode with 5+ goals if you let your guard down in the slightest.

If they end up playing vegas or dallas in the scf , they could do as the 2012 kings and win the cup and it will be a big series . Bobrovsky and tkachuk are the reason that this panthers team is looking like they have a chance to win the cup .
