People wanting tips is getting silly. Like going into a Dunkin Donuts, asking for a Boston Cream and the guy wants a tip. I tip well when I have a waiter/waitress, bartender, etc. I'm not tipping someone because they handed me a donut.

When I was a kid, my late Grandparents would take me and my siblings to TCBY every Friday after school. I still haven't figured out why my favorite was a cup of vanilla topped with gummy bears. Bland, the bears turned rock hard from the cold and lost most of their flavor from said cold. I'm guessing it was the whole Catholic penance thing making it's way into every aspect of my life as an 8yr old.😂

I remember where I live, which is a medium-sized city, we had 8 froyo places open in 2013. Previously we just had a TCBY. Within 5 years, all of the places had closed except for the two Menchies locations and the TCBY. Then both Menchies closed (one rebranded as "Swirl World") and now we just have that and TCBY.

The big problem with frozen yogurt is the price. For as much as I spend on a single cup at my local place I could buy 2 1.5 quart tubs of brand name or over a gallon of off brand ice cream at my local grocery store and they are about equally healthy.

@@BoltBrethren You missed their point. If limes are cheaper than oranges, I'm probably going to go for the limes to get my fruit fix. FroYo is so expensive that many people figured they may as well just get ice cream if they're going through the effort of getting a frozen dairy treat.

The part left out about TCBY is that they basically didn't own any of their own equipment. They had a lot of people investing in the company based on how popular they were and making dividends off their sales and expansion. But eventually, when the competition got big enough and people started looking at their books, it became clear that sales were the only value in the company because they owned no assets. Once their profits start falling, the slow slide into bankruptcy was the end result.

They want you to lay on the toppings of course. People eat with their eyes. But the stuff was already full of sugar and ends up being a big bowl of candy that won't keep. So you have a choice: eat it all because you paid for it all, and likely get sick from so much sugar, OR throw it away and get angry at yourself for spending so much money on candy you throw away. Either way, it's a bad niche for your product to own.

I forgot about frozen yogurt places for over a decade until I saw this video. I forgot the name of the frozen yogurt place I went to a few times (it disappeared before 2010). At home I stopped buying frozen yogurt (or even “low fat” ice cream) after seeing enough shows that said you’re better off getting regular ice cream but have less of it at a time. (I assume the advice still holds up with today’s studies, since FroYo adds more sugar or other flavouring to compensate for the sour taste of yogurt.)

I think there is still a single OrangeLeaf near me. We used to have four different froyo places that were just pallette swaps of each other, literally. They were almost exact copies with the exception of their names and color schemes, but everything else was the same. This included names that were simply Fruit+Fruit Related Thing. I don't remember them all, but OrangeLeaf and CherryBerry were two. These places had some tasty offerings, but the price for what you got quickly priced me out.
