actually I see this as an really smart move - why? the target were not strangers, but Mihoyo still, by writing everywhere their complaints Mihoyo would get complaints from those strangers too and by that way primary message is delivered too. Mihoyo didn't give much attention to complaints on own apps because they can fix that by themselves, but other apps and places they can't control, so the message stays and spreads. Nothing special, that was really logical actually. Thou it would be nice if such unity and activity can be done for far more serious things in life and protesting about stupid government or political harassment, corruption etc..

To anyone wondering why Genshin Impact protesters took it out on random applications, from what I can summarize is that they were being ignored, so they escalated each and every time, and since Google was deleting reviews on Genshin Impact, they spread their protest among all Mihoyo games, and when reviews started to be removed from there, they escalated once more to Google products and popular games to make the Google Play Store look bad. It's actually impressive how effective this protest was. It's like a fire being doused in gasoline.

Ah good memories. Back when I still used to play genshin. It wasn't just the bad rewards that angered me, it was the lack of anything special for the FIRST anniversary of the game. No special events, costumes, banners or anything. No small decorations in the game world for the day. Aside from the 10 pulls, an average player wouldn't even be able to tell that it was the game's first anniversary. That lack of acknowledgement was infuriating.

As someone who played the game the first week it came out, I definitely watched the chaos unfold. It was something that slowly built up from other things and not just from one rumor. For me, it started with all these contests that Mihoyo started that limited who gets rewards, because most players aren't artist, animators, or cosplayers. It was like Mihoyo was just trying to use the art community for free art and publicity for the anniversary. Then when the anniversary came and went and there was nothing but rewards you get on normal events, it felt like a let down. Not even a thank you note for the players for sticking to the game for a whole year when it had so many problems. Other gacha games give out better anniversary rewards and showed a lot more effort to thank their community to stick with them. Mihoyo felt like they just threw bits just to make it look like they did something while still trying to use the community for free arts and stuff. It felt like Mihoyo just didn't seem to care about its playerbase at all.

I didn’t play genshin at the time, but I remember I was in school and we basically had a free day because all the google classroom servers were shut down due to the overwhelming bad reviews in the span of 1 day. It was crazy. I remember thinking “I’m never gonna join the community” and them I did… surprise younger me!

The community was ironically justified to some degree. Google was doing a lockdown censorship to try to combat review bombing Genshin. And the Ayaka thing...? Was just a rumor that gets focused on because it makes for good clickbait. Anniversary rewards were complained about, but it was because it did not feel like an anniversary but more like an afterthought. And there were plenty of other underlying issues going on with Genshin with devs not listening to player feedback at all. This video misrepresents a bit of what was going on. The free Ayaka was just a speculation that nobody really had any expectation of, and was effectively just a rumor. A large portion of the protest was on Genshin not listening to its playerbase, with the complaint that the Anniversary not feeling like an anniversary being what broke the camel's back. Other big complaints were on Zhongli being weaker than his leaked test server version, Resin issues, and Artifact grinding. There were quite a few more Also, Google and other review sites were starting to lock down the page to counter review bombing Genshin itself only, which is why it spread to all of the other applications instead. And they straight up locked the review rating so no matter how many 1*s showed up it'd be stuck at 4.5 or so on some sites. Google itself made it so you had to meet specific criteria in order to post a review on Genshin. And post deletions as mentioned. Which was why they spread out to other apps. Google applications were a prime target because Google itself was a repeat offender of actively countering protest attempts via review bombing by deleting posts. Other apps were collateral damage [It was definitely a very interesting time for sure though]

Thank you for mentioning that glider wasn't originally meant to be free - Too many people who didn't even experienced this "event" live keep repeating that we received rewards and that community just overreacted, but you can still read patch notes for 2,1 on official website and see that it was planned as a part of paid bundle and we recieved it few days after anniversary already passed and only after the all hell break loose.

It wasn't even just anniversary rewards not being good, but general issues with how the game was run. A lot of feedback was being ignored, so even after getting the glider and smaller tidbits... there were people still complaining because other issues weren't resolved. Stuff like Resin and Artifact issues. And a big one from the CN side was Zhongli not being strong enough and was essentially nerfed from the test server version that leakers talked about. CN side was much more adamant on this issue because Liyue was representative of China, and the Archon was weak and not like an Archon at all due to this

As one of the Day 1 players, I didn't hear anything about a free Ayaka character on the first anniversary but more about the collective disappointment of the anniversary rewards that triggered the chaos. I didn't participate in the mass 1-star review in Google Play but my friends who are also playing the game, and I, were expecting something more than what we received during Lantern Rite. HoYoverse/MiHoyo earned a lot from Genshin Impact players even before they hit the first anniversary. We weren't F2P players so you can only imagine how triggered the players were when we could only receive 10 intertwined fates, despite them earning billions and trillions of dollars. The mail rewards at that time which included another 1600 primogems, and other items that were supposed to be an IAP were just damage control. However, it was deeply disappointing that the players in their other games were receiving better rewards. 3 years in the game, my friends and I just learned to deal with it every time the anniversary comes up because it's the same shitty rewards lol.

It... actually wasn't the so called 'free Ayaka' rumor that started it. Most people don't believe that. It was too good to be true for most people. What really happened was Genshin had way too many issues that they were ignoring that players were complaining about, that the Anniversary Rewards being only 10 pulls when they were pulling in record numbers ended up breaking the camel's back. Actually, Ayaka wasn't even being released at that time either. So that rumor was even stupider Real issue? Zhongli was way weaker on release than leaks from test server. Coupled with a plethora of other issues such as Resin recharge and consumption and Artifact grinding. All sorts of player complaints that were not addressed over the year. Then they came out with the "we are a small and poor company" rewards when they were making bank You know what finally fixed the issue and made people quiet down? Zhongli buffs, and them saying they will start listening to player feedback. You know what didn't? The additonal rewards of the wings and primos. Instead of making players quiet down, they got memed on harder. Qiqi fallen was a meme going around, on both the CN and Global side, mostly from CN. And what they did with the sticker was add those rewards to the sticker as a meme for unmet expectations. It was a protest that was very centered around the CN side and Global decided to take up the torch on their end and join in. And the biggest complaint was from CN with Zhongli being an Archon represeting China being too weak

OFF TOPIC: As a former Filipino (currently living abroad now) who is in the Genshin community, the Filipino Genshin Community is just built different and I want to tell you what it's like there. If you really want to meet them or experience what their community feels like, just imagine lots of shitposting, terrible memes, Google Maps posting and existential, self-aware jokes; but what's interesting is that after all those jokes, no ones actually gets offended. Everyone there sees that Genshin jokes are their stress relief from their everyday problems in life. Also, the community is also known for being very politically vocal, so expect some Genshin memes that make fun of their government. Fun fact: The only thing that makes the Filipino Genshin community unique from the rest of Asia is that they are the only community in Asia where English dub has a strong following and presence. In fact, the Philippines may be the only country in Asia that plays in English. (because Western culture and entertainment was a lot more prevalent here in the past, so we kinda got used to English as our second language).

I can proudly say I survived the first genshin anniversary. There were three kinds of people in the community during this event: neutral people who stood between the crossfires, the review bombers and/or the protesters and the people who took mihoyo's side and tried to stop the review bombers(this type of players were usually found on tiktok). It was a whole mess, but it was fun to watch. Don't get me started on the sumeru situation tho (it wasn't big but it was horrific, especially on apps like twitter and tiktok..)

Ok, but i really gotta say this as someone who witnessed that catastrophic event, that "free Ayaka" wasn't really the reason (yes, i know its emphasis is only for jokes in this vid), in fact i don't recall ever hearing that rumor, it was mostly "free standard 5*", but mainly the reason people were FURIOUS was due to the fact that genshin, a record breaking game, heck even history making at that point gave its players 10 fates for it's 1st anniversary, and tbh i understand their anger. I feel a lot of people forget that. It wasn't just the anniversary itself but a combination of factors that came to a head when the anniversary rolled around (for example, Inazuma's release in general, while overall positive, was pretty divisive). The anniversary was just the straw that broke the camel's behind. This isn't really a fair comparison due to differences in tenure, but Warframe had their 10th anniversary earlier this year and had a ton of in-game events, up to and including bringing back rare boss fights that awarded parts for some hilariously fun weapons, and had rotating "Double X" weekends for like 2 months. This year was Genshin's 3rd anniversary and here we are again with another contest raffle, 20 rolls, and yet another teapot item many of us will forget about in... eh, I'd say an hour. The problem wasnt the rewards being shit. The problem was, Honkai Impact 3 came before Genshin and Hi3 had a really bountiful rewards and celebration events that pales in comparison. The nail in the coffin is that not long after Genshin's 1st anniversary was Honkai's 5th anniversary and they actually gave a free 5 star of your choice after completing the event halfway which isnt that bad it took like 45 minutes for me

To clear some stuff up: Never heard of the Ayaka thing. I think you're confusing it for a another event way back in 1.0, where there was a rumor that once you hit a certain AR, you'd get a free Ayaka. The anniversary rewards rumor was that you'd get a free standard 5★, like in the clickbait thumbnails. I think this was based off expectations from HI3 rewards and general community delusion. Now, not everyone believed the delusional expectations of the free 5★ stuff, but everyone was at least expecting something akin to or better than the Latern Rite rewards, which is why we went nuclear when the real rewards were released. The reason the storm was calmed after the bonus rewards was mostly because A: the rewards were slightly better, not great, but at least more on par with the average genshin rewards and B: we were all tired and just wanted to be done, and all knew this little bonus was the most we'd be able to squeeze out of this greedy team. (not company, hi3 and hsr are fine in terms of generosity)

Yea tbh hsr is very generous literally every month is an anniversary for us, lmao thats the reason i stopped playing gi and switch to hsr since hsr game devs are genorous innovative and responsive asf, lmao even genshin after 3 years has a trash resin system, compared to hsr new 240 cap and reserved resin, hsr has much more endgame, literally gi has just become mihoyos cash cow at this point......

The 5 star thing is always a rumor that has been around since the beginning of the game. Reach a certain AR/Anniversary/Lantern Rite/whatever. It's up there with "This version will have a playable Cloud Retainer (which usually ends up being either fake or someone else like Shenhe)!"

@@GummyDinosaursify well tbh it was an expectation from alot of players to get a free 5 star from perm pool as literally gi was the biggest game of that year they won multiple awards yet they have not given a 5 star even games like fortnite gave away like a free bp of chp1 s8, minecraft gave offers of buying java+bedrock.Genshin just gave 10 free pulls and vonsidering that you need 180 for a guarenteed on banner, 10 pulls is very skimpy of them imho.....

The thing is... the amount of rewards usually given out by game companies are inversely proportional to how popular the game is. The more popular the game is, the less they are incentivized to give out outlandish rewards to bring more people in. The success of Genshin Impact is the downfall of the rewards the community was expecting. Since there WAS no downside to being stingy with the Anniversary Reward, the community GAVE them the reason not to be stingy.

I remember that chaos really well, and believe, things were actually a bit worse: 1st even without a free 5*, the anniv rewards just sucked 2nd you could only get something else from winning competions that not everyone would even have a chance, like fanart competion or cosplay 3rd mihoyo stole fanarts and used as their art without paying or giving credits for the artists 4th they start banning anyone who said anything about the anniv in the discord server and reddit 5th they weren't letting anyone say anything in other places like mihoyolab 6th honkai anniv rewards were better 7th everyone was treating who complained as some type of villain, specially whales full on copium, looking down at all f2p players like they had no right to complain 8th mihoyo were giving hundreds of primogems to content creators around the anniv for them to defend the anniv and keep doing content for them and asked them to not tell anyone about the +2k primos they got 9th chinese new year event literally gave more stuff than anime, more pulls and a free choice liyue 4* Also not all people just review bomb other things to give lower stars, a lot of us also went to these genshin rip off games and gave 5 stars there was a 1,9 star game that became 4 stars because of it With all that said, it's now a funny memory to remember, even if I got so mad back then, and I think no one complained in the other annivs because no one have any faith on mihoyo annivs nowdays

as someone witnessed this historical moment, as far as i remember, the first week it happen there was chaos everywhere that has word "genshin impact" or "mihoyo" in it. from formal and official to shitposting and meme forum, there's almost no exception. first couple days there was angry fans everywhere and then some others of the fans joined for fun, jokes and trolling, the rest are just there witnessing the chaos 😄
