What the IMF did to Zambia is what they are doing in Nigeria... They support a corrupt politician to become President, turn a blind eye to his corrupt dealings, debt trap the country, and then force him to start implementing their policies. The result is more poverty for the people. We don't need IMF and World Bank in Africa.

Do you know what the term Sovereign means? As in a Sovereign country? The role is the IMF is not to fight corruption but to foster macroeconomic stability and sustainable economic growth. They will not police a politician for theft. In the new IMF Framework. Countries go to the IMF with economic recovery plans that are self made. That show how with the support of an IMF program (a loan) the country plans to restore macroeconomic stability. The age of forced conditionalities are over. Just hold tinubu accountable for his incompetence.

What others are not understanding about Zambia's problems is that they are multifactorial. The influence of the West is significant and has been since independence. From privatization to excessive borrowing to the current implementation of 'debt restructuring,' these actions have aimed to secure a firm grip on the country's resources. This is evident in policies such as tax holidays for mining companies and attempts to sell large tracts of land to foreign investors. Each government seems to have inadvertently prepared for the next phase of this plan, and we underestimating the West's influence. Most policies are structured in favor of external interests rather than Zambia's. If I was to think of ways for us to jump out of this, the first thing is to stop relying on copper. The whole west influence is because we are nothing without our copper sales, we are rich in this resource and they control the prices of a commodity that we ourselves own. If we can ride our GDP on something else, diversify our economy, we might have better economic control. And in as much as we like to do the blame game, I think we are past that. We can go on blaming even as far as the UNIP government if we like but blaming is not equal to problem solved. Problem solving involves learning from the mistakes made by others and implementing policies that ensure you do not run a similar path.

External debt is manageable if the investment in certain sectors is worthwhile. However, Zambia over borrowed and the government at that time overinflated the figures of certain projects and investments. Not just from IMF but from China and other lenders too, including eurobond. Over borrowing is what put Zambia where it is now.

Okay I lack economics knowledge but just for speculation purposes, a person (The IMF) advises me to borrow from them so that I can build let's say flats for rentals to enable me to get the rent money and use some for my personal consumption and some to pay back the debt. Now if I originally proposed to say I will build a flat that will have maybe let's say 10 rental apartments and for the to be build based on the evaluation I say the person (the IMF) should lend me k100, 000 and they do so. Then I build something a flat that has two rental apartments and the rest of the money decides to grow wings and fly. So the person who lend me the money is the problem or the evaluation was based on the instance that the IMF knew that Zambia wont still manage to pay?
@mosesmukambojr8707
@mosesmukambojr8707 Ай бұрын
@@Chewecb @Chewecb precisely. To further contextualize on what you've just said. Let's say you are a person. You make bad financial decisions. Your income of K100 can't sustain your basic needs K50 because owe money K75. Maybe you got a loan to buy a taxi but it didn't pay off and you've got this huge debt you have to pay off. Here are your options: 1. Keep living K25 until you pay down your debt. 2. Get another loan to pay the old one from the bank. Caveat cause of your financial Situation the bank will charge you a higher interest rate which would actually increase what you have to pay back. For argument sake maybe its an interest of 25%. Finally option 3. You go to a friend (IMF) who understand your situation and tells you to make a plan of how you'll get your self into a more sustainable position i.e. you say you want to build flats. They agree to your plan and ask you change your spending habits i.e. stop going to the club stop buying non essentials such as mayonnaise etc. You agree. They give you a new loan to achieve your plan and give you a grace period to payback of 3 years and at interest rate of 4%.

In the 60s, Liberia, a failed state borrowed $5 millions from the Financial Institutions. The debt was resold to vulture capitalists. In the 2000s, the vulture capitalists took the government of Liberia to Court (some shadowy international court). They demanded a payment of $30 millions. The capitalists won and Liberia had to pay them those $30 millions!!!!

@@brucemclaren- China builds infrastructure in other developing nations. And, of course, this is intended to benefit China as much as the developing nation. But there is at least a reciprocity to the deals China makes with other nations. By contrast, the US all but forces poorer, desperate nations, especially those with compliant leaders, to take out IMF loans and loans from financial institutions such as those controlled by Blackrock or Vanguard. The loan deal generally benefits the IMF and others far more than it does the debtor nation. The interest on these loans too often ensures that the recipient nation can not manage its finances and might have to default. The IMF then comes back to the recipient nation with a debt restructuring offer. And those offers invariably force the recipient nations to privatise their national industries, stop growing their own food and allow extractive companies (usually American) access to their natural resources.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF), the CIA, and the USA have been implicated in contributing to African debt issues and the installation of regimes more likely to accept IMF loans. Here are the key points: ### IMF's Role in African Debt 1. **Structural Adjustment Programs (SAPs)**: - The IMF imposed SAPs on African countries as a condition for loans. These programs often included austerity measures, privatization, and deregulation, which led to economic hardship and increased debt[1][3]. 2. **High-Interest Loans**: - IMF loans often come with higher interest rates and stringent repayment terms, exacerbating debt burdens. African countries owe significant amounts to multilateral institutions, including the IMF[1][3]. 3. **Debt Composition**: - Multilateral financial institutions and commercial creditors hold nearly three-quarters of Africa's total external debt, with the IMF being a significant part of this group[1][3]. ### CIA and USA's Role in Installing Puppet Regimes 1. **Historical Interventions**: - The CIA and the USA have a history of intervening in African politics, often supporting or installing regimes that align with their geopolitical interests. These regimes are more likely to accept IMF loans and follow Western economic policies. 2. **Cold War Era**: - During the Cold War, the USA supported anti-communist regimes in Africa, many of which were authoritarian and corrupt. These regimes often took on significant debt to finance their governments and maintain power. 3. **Economic Policies**: - The USA has promoted neoliberal economic policies in Africa, which align with IMF conditions. These policies often prioritize debt repayment over social spending, leading to increased poverty and inequality. ### Combined Impact 1. **Debt Trap**: - The combination of IMF loans with stringent conditions and the installation of compliant regimes has created a cycle of debt dependency. African countries often have to take on new loans to service old debts, leading to a debt trap[1][3]. 2. **Economic Vulnerability**: - The economic policies imposed by the IMF and supported by the USA have made African economies more vulnerable to external shocks, such as global financial crises and commodity price fluctuations[1][3]. 3. **Public Perception**: - There is growing criticism and awareness of the role of Western financial institutions and governments in perpetuating African debt. This has led to calls for debt relief and more sustainable economic policies[1][3]. In summary, the IMF's loan conditions and the USA's geopolitical strategies have significantly contributed to the debt crises in African countries. These actions have often prioritized financial and political control over sustainable development and economic stability. In zambia, we have enough resources to payback that loan if we can utilize our resources well. We have gold, copper, cobalt unfortunately what leads to this over borrowing and poverty is luck of machinery to use for resources into finished goods like gold and copper. Poor leadership in zambia also has lead to that because our leaders don't invest in local people for mining and investing in machinery to use to turn gold into finished product. We are poor in thinking and poor investing in our own ideas 💡.

The one and only job and reason the IMF and World Bank were created was to facilitate continued supply of raw materials at cheaper costs . Investor is the only way the western frontier and other parts of the world can access African resources. The IMF and World Bank also start with a downgrade of national currencies. Meaning drop the price for raw materials. Please tell me how this could work if consumer would tell retailers how much the products are worthy. Have anyone ever looked at the IMF and World Bank agreements ? All loans approved already set on where and how they are going to be used , All of it is not revenue generation .. it's all administrative or so called infrastructure which does not generate and profit. They damn make sure that the money owed is never going to regenerate but will Sipho and drain whatever the nation is generating. These governments have big numbers of loans with nothing to show for it hence the corruption and thievery claims . It's diabolical.

For some reason or another, Zambia seems to have isolated herself from SADC, their current leadership is spending more time doing military exercises with the US than industrialising the country. You are currently at loggerheads with the DRC, a country which can help with your loadshedding woes, and friends with countries that are plundering the DRC

Jubilees 1:9,12,14 [9]And many will perish and they will be taken captive, and will fall into the hands of the enemy, because they have forsaken My ordinances and My commandments, and the festivals of My covenant, and My sabbaths, and My holy place which I have hallowed for Myself in their midst, and My tabernacle, and My sanctuary, which I have hallowed for Myself in the midst of the land, that I should set my name upon it, and that it should dwell (there). [12]And I will hide My face from them, and I will deliver them into the hand of the Gentiles for captivity, and for a prey, and for devouring, and I will remove them from the midst of the land, and I will scatter them amongst the Gentiles. [14]And after this they will turn to Me from amongst the Gentiles with all their heart and with all their soul and with all their strength, and I will gather them from amongst all the Gentiles, and they will seek me, so that I shall be found of them, when they seek me with all their heart and with all their soul.

14:27 you mentioned that more than half live on less than $1.90 a day and as a resident in Zambia i can tell you the number is much much lower than that because most low income people in the Capital Lusaka earn about ZMW1000 per month which is like $39 which is like $1.20 or $1 or less. And with how the exchange rate against the dollar has just been bad for Zambia those debt repayments will never be met because the Government is earning in the local currency that's losing value faster than they can increase the revenue

You are really on pin point track but you've just scratched the surface. Really looking forward for part 2 3:27 is the the harsh truth going on right now as at 06/08/2024 in zambia These conditions are awful for a deal even if whom you proposing to can't say a thing - Eliminating fuel subsidies -Cutting Electricity Subsidies -Raising Tariffs -expanding value added tax to more goods And boom our currency is devalued to the toilet in 2024 and its actually less than 1.96 USD per/day .

I think the speaker has done very poor research on the accumulation of the debt by Zambia. Yes, the rush to IMF for help was a huge mistake which has been worsened by the tax concessions given to some operating mines. Yes Zambia is in a debt trap due to the bad practices by the Western monopoly capital. Yes the late old, KK was a victim of the West in the same way the late Nkrumah and Cadaffi were cleared. At least the so called poor in Zambia have land on which they grow their own food and have little or no personal debts. The future of the world will depend on the practices of win win efforts by the West otherwise one day Western economy will suffer in the absence of raw materials from Africa

Look at you, re-writing our history while we are still alive. Take a seat. For once allow us to take responsibility for our actions, yeah? First off, let's begin from the beginning, in 1991, using democratic means, my parents generation removed KK from power after 27 yrs in charge. At that point our debt had a GDP:DEBT ratio of over 200%. It took 2 decades and a lot of pain, but by 2005, we hit HIPC Completion. At the end of our final IMF Program under the them ruling party(MMD) in 2010, we had a GDP:DEBT ratio of about 20%. My generation then kicked out the MMD in 2011. Despite the fact that the period 2008-11 was some of the best we'd had in my lifetime, pipo wanted change and ushered in a new party. This is where I begin to differ in opinions here. We are a huge country with huge transport and power infrastructure deficits. It's actually an insult to our intelligence to suggest that someone external came to tell us that we need infrastructure. It suggests inherently that we couldn't make that out on our own, and absolves our leadership of what happened next. In fact, the new President Sata, (and his party PF) campaigned on a platform of infrastructure development. He actually used to mock the MMD saying, what's the point in all those nice statistics(inflation, debt stats, et al macroeconomic indicators)if you are not developing the country? Why keep money in the bank (foreign reserves), instead of building roads, schools, clinics etc? He went as far as Promising to use that money to build the much needed infrastructure. So, here we were, 2011, fresh out of debt, new President, respectable (Reserve) bank balance, We even had a B+ Moody's or Fitch rating. Secondly, My opinion is that the IMF did not control our economic decisions between 2011 and 2021. In 2012, to much fan fare, we got the first of 3 Eurobonds. $750m, with interest payments and a huge principal "bullet" payment at the end of it. There was no plan for what to do with the money BEFORE govt got it. A year or so later, some of it was still in the bank and Govt then even started using it for salaries! Was the IMF responsible for this decision? We borrowed a 2nd, $1.25bn Eurobond. This here is crucial. You see, the MMD left legislation, a debt ceiling for borrowing money. The PF had to go to Parliament to increase this threshold twice in their 10 year period. If I remember right, Such was the intensity of the debate that one of those sessions went late into the night. Both times, they had to rely on the arrogance of numbers for the bills to get through. The IMF had no seat at that table. Circa 2013-14, Zambia Institute for Policy Analysis and Research(ZIPAR, a govt think tank) produced a study showing the benefits and crucially, the pitfalls of the Eurobonds. They even cited various countries around the world STRUGGLING with the burden of NOT Preparing to repay these debts. They suggested a number of strategies to prevent economic collapse in the period 2022-27, bcoz you see, Govt was preparing to get a third $1bn Eurobond. Their suggestion was for us to create a Sinking fund, with computations on how much we would need to put in every year to avert trouble. In our next budget, the then Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda announced it's creation. Two fundamental things here... At the highest executive and legislative levels, there was enough awareness there that hiding behind the IMF is a bit of an insult to our governance system. But more importantly, it showed that those who actually made the decision to borrow the money didn't actually prepare to pay the money back. Again, at that decision making table, the IMF wasn't there. President Sata died in Sept 2014, and was succeeded by President Lungu. He got the third $1bn Eurobond, but more importantly, and quite incredibly silly of you to fail to mention, is that, his regime (2015-2021) was very pro China. Which brings me to my final third point. It's a "Dog eat dog" world out there. Under President Lungu, Zambia jumped on to China's lending spree, borrowing over $8bn worth of infrastructure projects. The 2nd time PF had to increase the debt ceiling, it went to such a level that they didn't need to go to Parliament to get to the colossal levels it got to. Although the President changed the law so that all debt must be ratified by Parliament, it was not implemented. The result was that at some point it was actually unclear how much we owed! The IMF most certainly was not at that table. Unfortunately for us, a series of challenges(drought in 2015, cholera epidemic in 2017/18, another severe drought in 2019, and the final straw, the COVID Pandemic) meant that our debt repayments were way beyond our capacity to pay. This was confirmed in 2019, when a debt sustainability analysis was done by the IMF and World Bank. This is the point at which these institutions came back to the table. At this stage we were already in debt distress, and by 2020 we defaulted. The IMF suggested that to get back on track, particular measures would have to be put in place. But, we were headed into 2021, another election year. Now, you've talked smack about democracy. Thing is, my country is multi ethnic. Regionalism is a big thing here, and democracy I think beat suits us because of it. Through our it's 10 year period in power, the people watched the PF do their thing. When the time came, President Lungu was peacefully booted out of power. One of the reasons was fall leading us into debt trap. For he avoidance of doubt, our Credit rating was CAA, and junk for international DEBT, since we were in default. In fact, the new President's first Cabinet choice was the Finance Minister, who was the last MMD Finance Minister. He basically had watched, as an opposition MP for 10 years while the PF pissed away all the hardwork and progress made from his previous stint. I say all this, not to say that things are kumbaya between us and the west, nor to suggest that there is no economic sabotage by external parties. It's also to suggest that, we actually went into the debt trap with our eyes open. And now? Fundamentally, the first thing the current regime did, was to amend the law so that all our debts going forward is approved by Parliament. That it doesn't go beyond particular thresholds. The debt restructuring we done at speed(mainly because this is not our first rodeo), is just so we can have breathing space and get our act together, like any adult responsible nation ought to do. We can't continuously play the victim. There is space in this conversation for us to say, "you know what, we are also responsible for this part of the problem, and this is why we are doing to sort ourselves out."

Actually, The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has had a significant influence in Zambia from 2011 to the present. In 2011, Zambia was under a three-year arrangement with the IMF's Extended Credit Facility, which involved reviews and discussions on economic policies[3]. In recent years, Zambia has sought IMF assistance to address economic challenges, including debt restructuring and fiscal reforms[4]. The IMF's involvement has included programs that impact fiscal policies and economic reforms, reflecting its continued influence over Zambia's economic strategies during this period[2][4]. Zambia's debt-to-GDP ratio is highly unsustainable. As of the end of 2021, Zambia's debt-to-GDP ratio was approximately 124%, significantly above the recommended threshold of 35% by the IMF and World Bank[1]. The IMF also reported Zambia's debt-to-GDP ratio at 119% in 2021[3]. This indicates that Zambia's debt situation is critical and poses significant economic challenges. Put in offshore bank accounts leading to less local production increase inflation whilist we as a nation are paying for a loan that our economic models showed that the increase in production (the inflow from the loan plus the reduced cost of transportation by using rail plus new jobs created) but this didn't happen but you are still paying the 300 million. This happened. This is real. Zambias problem is corruption political will and lack of priorities I have made me my sole purpose to respond to everyone on this video.

@@s_africanchannel4810 because the problem(s) we are in is not an overnight fix and they will be allot of adjustment. Here is a breakdown of all the issues so you can have an appreciation for the macroeconomic dynamics that are affecting us. 1. Our Copper production fallen with the closure of KCM and MCM meaning we are getting less FOREX meaning the dollar will be high. Solution we need to get more Mines open quick. 2. We owe alot of money. The money we owe is not IMF or World Bank money this money more than 50% (Bonds & Chinese Banks & other banks) came from private lenders. Now a private lender is in the business of making money they don't care about your challenges. 3. Our energy tarrifs have been the lowest in the region making it hard to attract investment into the energy sector. Falling the recent drought energy supply has been affected leading to less production which will lead to more inflation and less FOREX. Now if tarrifs are increased you'll increase the cost of living and you guys don't want that additionally even if they are increased investment into new power plants will take years to materialize. I could go on and on with this. But to the issues we are in the is no quick fix. We need to send more to boost the economy but we can't cause we owe people and we can't pay them cause are side hustles are not bringing in alot of money but we can't push more money in cause we don't have money and even investors don't want to support our side hustles cause the economy is not looking stable. Its crazy my guy. The pressure that man has only Job has felt it before.
