I've spoken to a bunch of people who grew up in London then moved up here and they all say the same. You have everything you need and it's all nice and compact so you don't have to go for miles and miles to get to it like in London. Though I really do want London style transport here and across the region. That would be a major game changer for the economy around here. Imagine a Crossrail of the North from Liverpool to Hull?

Every country it seems has the cities that most people will go to (usually the capital city) or just the ones you hear about most often and the touristy cities. But if you want to actually experience the culture and what that city/ country is about (where the locals live, eat, hang around), then you have to go where the tourists usually don’t. Manchester is another example.

I've observed that following covid and the housing crisis in most European capitals, large regional cities in most countries have seen an influx of young people and money leading to places like Manchester to strive again. Its a very positive development, however, the risk is that these places tend to copy the capitals and end up with the same affordability issues much more quickly as the infrastructure cant keep up with population growth. Enjoy it while you can!
@traderjo95522 ай бұрын
I don't think copying the capitals is the issue, it's like you said, lots of young people flock to cities like Manchester, but then you get housing issues, rent increases as a result, then it makes life's harder for the poorer, all of the locals etc.

Living practically directly between Manchester and Liverpool my sister and I have had a continuous feud over which city is better. I’m on the side of Manchester cause it really feels like a modern and prosperous metropolitan city whereas, to me, Liverpool seems rather stagnant and declining. A major case for me is their respective museums. Manchester Museum recently went through a major renovation with new galleries and updates to older ones, and Liverpool Museum seems to be stuck in the 80s with empty aquariums and outdated information.

The beautiful sunken gardens in Piccadilly replaced by a concrete monstrosity. New Cross, New Islington, and Ancoats called the Northern Quarter how bloody twee? One of the strangest reviews (watching as a resident) of Manchester I've ever seen and not sure who its aimed at, presumably someone who lives very far away. It's also riddled with inaccuracies, and has clearly been made by someone who has gone on a day trip and whipped their camera out. Some of the bars mentioned/shown are not even in Ancoats. As for the sights, this doesnt even scratch the surface, as you've shown 4 things there that sit on the outskirts of the city and whilst its good for exposure, its like going to New York and not showing anything in Manhattan.

I think you didn't research the place sufficiently! World heritage are considering it. If your a historian, love sports or a night out (for any budget) there will be something for you. Then there are the people. Friendly! Too right, that's what sets it apart!

It’s obviously a matter of opinion and taste. Personally l prefer Liverpool but Manchester is an extremely interesting city. As everyone says it is the world’s first industrial city: it has always been a place for money making. But it is also politically radical and its reinvention is the work of a staunchly socialist council, in alliance with artists, a lot of American corporations and right wing national politicians. It is a place for capitalists, sport, artists and bohemians. The population is young and diverse. To love the city you need a bit of a taste for darkness, grime and rain. It’s not for everyone
