Whether the Man O' War should be added is an age old debate in Sea of Thieves, and usually ends with the word no. However I believe that a solution has finally been found, and a way that this huge vessel can be successfully added! Remember to like, subscribe, and hit that bell so you know when I upload videos!

Just saying, along with the Man O' War, the Sea of Thieves crew and also allow additional ship personalization; mainly the sails, so that all the ships would look more unique and different from others. And it would also be fun for the Man O' War to be put in. Especially as a world event.

This sounds pretty good to be honest, altough I would say the ship itself could be bigger then most would think is balancable. As for eastetic, maybe a bit in the style of the sea dog tavern where things are a bit mashed together. An interesting feature could maybe be that claiming the ship could mean some sort of universal emmisary like deal (so not bound to a specific kind of loot or action). where for every action you make while in command it gets put towards some extra bonusses and stuff. which you can cash in by scrapping the ship at maybe a specific outpost or steal by sinking it of you're not in command. as for overpowerdness, I'd say if you make it slow enough it's perfect with having some firepower in return. sure slow sucks but it's a mobile fort! Imagine being on a sloop doing your thing to only see this massive thing slowly approaching O.O basically making it amazing and profitable to band together with crews to sail it and leaving others no choice but to run. The only real way to properly defeat it is to alliance up with others and or slowly chip away at it. It just sounds like it would be the perfect thing rare has been looking for to introduce a reason to band together, wether it be to claim or defeat this threat.

So your solution to adding a larger ship is to make it so that only people in alliances can use the ship... Hmmm... that seems to benefit a certain community above every other player in the game if you ask me... Speaking as a game dev there ARE ways to add, and balance a Man of War into sea of thieve but this ain't it. Prioritising one type of play above all others whenever Sea of Thieves is a game with playstyles as diverse as the community, and looks of each of the pirates upon the sea is a step in the worst direction possible. The whole point of the game is that there are no statistic differences between the best, and worst players on the server but adding this ship in this way would specifically fundamentally change that. Suddenly whilst all players start equally if you have friends who play the game, or are more skilled at the game then you get an undeniably better ship than everyone else on the server. That doesn't sound fun to me, at all and it doesn't sound remotely balanced. I don't disagree with the ship appearing, or being used in World events and I certainly don't disagree with the notion of the factions having Man Of War Variants, or that you should be able to seize control over it. But you can't resolve the greatest flaw in the idea by making an even bigger flaw in the idea and claiming it's balanced. Not to mention your idea contradicts several core gameplay philosophies of Sea of Thieves. the two easiest are: 1. The statistical improvement of having a better ship ship than everyone else on the server because you're better at the game, or just so happened to be in an alliance, which would allow for example an oppressive Reaper to truly control the entire sea of thieves, wouldn't having a Man of War Trivialize Legend of the Veil, and just being a reaper? Adding the ship in this way would essentially add incentive into the game for players to bully their way onto another player's crew, bully them out of the game then invite the appropriate number of players just to make sure that they had an okay Man Of War crew, and outside of that the only players who could reliably get the ship would be content creators. If the ship's not going to be used by the vast majority of the community then it shouldn't be in the game at all. 2. Every ship in Sea Thieves has a set crew size, the three tiers of ships work by increasing the max crew size by 1 per tier. Sloop (2) > Brig (3) > Galleon (4) This is in place in the game for a reason, it's because the majority of players of a single game will have a hard time even finding 3 players to play the game which is why the vast majority of players in Sea of Thieves play Sloops over Brigs or Galleons, and why you'll see sloops populating a server more often than the alternative. What you're suggest, a 6 person ship would almost never have the number of people required to crew it because you'd likely have four sloops, with maybe one of them having two players. If it literally takes four out of the six players on the server coming together to use the Man Of War then maybe the Man of War needs more planning done. Two feature you don't seem to have thought about are Hourglass PVP, and server hopping. What happens if 6 players on the same ship use the pirate's life server hopping method? Do they get the Man of War on a new server, which may already have a Man of War, does it then become possible for Man Of Wars to alliance? As for Hourglass PVP I assume it just wouldn't work. The issue here is that there are so many cons that they're still outnumbering the pros, and you've essentially resolved many of the initial issues by making more issues. So many things haven't been thought about, and there are so many issues with this. I had a 10 hour session of sea of thieves across multiple servers yesterday and I saw 1 Brig, and no galleons. The crewing issue still exists even if it's a world event. You would need at minimum 3 sloops to fully crew this thing, when was the last time you saw an alliance of 3 ships, then when was the last time before that and before that? They're not common, and often end in betrayal. Even if you somehow made this work you're essentially just playing open crew but with a bigger open crew.

I'd much rather them introduce variations of existing ships than a larger spawnable ship type, but since I don't think that will ever happen, your treasure ship event idea would be the most balanced and fun way to add a bigger ship.

@paulomr445

The idea of ship subtypes would be really cool to add more variety to what you see at see but I don't know if a different hull alone would be unbalanced. For example, take a junk,. It doesn't have a bowsprit which is pretty useful for putting stuff on or use as a ramp. Does that make the junk inherently inferior to other vessels? Well it has sails with better visibility, but is that a fair trade off? So on and so forth. If I wasn't very concerned about balance and was only wanted to add variety here's how I'd do it tho: 3 new ship subtypes: Navy Ship, Junk, Xebec/halfgalley The navy ships are based more on 17th-18th ships, with their rigging having staysails, making them faster in a crosswind than the base ships, their holes taking water at slower rate and have additional guns or swivel guns that provide wider firing arcs and taller walls to protect the crew while firing. Although this does come at a cost. Every mast has an additional control point for the staysails, the canons, while providing an overall better field of fire, have limited fields themselves, and the ship doesn't turn as well as the normal ships. It's also slightly more inconvenient to move cargo around. It's a ship that trades open water combat prowess for greater crew overwork. Unstoppable in the hands of a competent crew but a sitting duck when not sailed properly. Junks turn better than base ships, with the sloop putting it's canons in the front and back instead of the sides. Brigs have one in each direction, while galleons have 2. This ship would be slightly slower than the base when going downwind but slightly faster up wind. It'd also have a lower chance of taking damage when running aground, making it a better fighter near isles. It's a ship that focuses on chasing or repelling enemies by having the better firing arcs, but be very vulnerable to full broadsides. Xebecs/half galley sloops have their canons facing directly ahead, with the bigger types, having them mounted on the side. This ship has a latine sail, and is slightly slower than all other types expect a few angles up wind. However it has two big attributes, the ship takes no damage from hits to it's bow, and it has oars. Fully upwind with ours this ship beats any other so I think it's purpose it's clear. This is a boarding ship, meant to be aimed at the enemy and sailed at full speed until it can get close for the crew to climb aboard. Of course the crux of this ship lies in the crew's ability to manuever with the oars, which leaves them incapable of doing other tasks. I doubt this would be implemented, but for the sake of fun I think it'd be interesting.

It is honestly a miracle they were able to free up enough server resources in the latest season to boost the server cap back up to 6 ships from 5, while ALSO keeping space for a SEVENTH ship to hop in for Hourlgass PvP. That last bit is where my thinking comes in. If a server can make room for one extra ship for Hourglass PvP, there's potentially a little bit of leeway for extra players on something like a PvE Event Man-O-War. That does mean no ships hopping in for Hourlgass on that server, though, if the Man-O-War is up. But I would also say if you choose to serve on the Man-O-War, your ship HAS to get scuttled, if even just for the sake of game resources. I am not a Rare employee, nor am I an Azure server expert, nor is this actually a feature that's going to be coming to the game anytime soon as far as I'm aware. I am purely speaking hypothetically.

Yes that would kinda be op or have 4 ships vs any other ship, however it wouldn’t be as overpowered as an alliance anyways so I think it could work

Not only that, but the ship Iredell should have some sort of balancing feature to let all other crews on the server know that there IS a Man O War sailing on their server. Either to serve as a warning to stay away from it, or to serve as a challenge for smaller ships to track it down, attack, and sink it. MAYBE a world event beacon or having it be permanently marked on the map, OR there could be some kind of unique dialogue between the trading companies, where their representative could tell you the exact grid-coordinates of the Man O War, meaning you’d have to sail there quick and keep an eye out for the massive ship, and if you don’t see it at those coordinates, you’ll have to check again at a new outpost near the coordinates you were given (thus creating a sort of Cat and Mouse game, for anyone brave enough to try to hunt down a Man O War)
@civilturtle1870
@civilturtle1870 Жыл бұрын
Great video, but I think alternatively, the man o’ war could work as a sort of juggernaut system. If members of an alliance total exactly six players, all running the same alliance, you can have the option to relinquish all of your ships to summon the man o’ war. When it is summoned, the six members of the crew spawn on that ship and their spawn points are set there too. When the man o’ war begins to sail, it will activate a large flame on the main deck that will produce a large beacon that works like a reapers chest. The ship can also be seen on the map by all players. The ship can go around doing voyages, as per normal, but it gets a few benefits. The emissary the alliance crew was is permanently the alliance of the ship, and it can be advanced to grade six, providing a 200% sell bonus. Additionally, all emissary treasure brought aboard a grade six man o’ war will be marked with an emissary seal, boosting its normal value. If these chests are stolen by another ship, the seal will remain, and their value will still be boosted. To balance this, the downsides to the man o’ war could be a three minute respawn time, no harpoons, no rowboat dock, and inconvenient barrel placement. Also, the man o’ war could have a unique crest, that can act as a valuable treasure for reapers. What do you guys think?

Pretty similar to a post I made on the subreddit a short while ago. My proposal went like this. In-universe justification: Through a series of shenanigans the Devil's Shroud starts to have periods where it opens up more than usual. This allows the Sovereigns to bring in some of their warships into the sea of thieves (Since the game is supposed to cover the golden age of piracy and that ended with increased intervention by navies it's applicable). Gameplay: This translates into occasionally a Royal fleet event spawning on one of the corners of the map. This fleet is made up of 4 brigs and 2 galleons, that act like skelly ships with a different count of paint, and the Man-o-War at the centre. Players can approach the fleet and dock with it to get privateering quests from some sort of Grand Sovereign NPC in the flagship's cabin and navigate some on board shops of exotic goods and equipment. Taking over the Man-o-War: To capture the ship a crew would need to defeat the Grand Sovereign in an on deck boss fight, which will drop a logbook used to transfer command to the crew. The ship has a max crew size of 8 as to encourage players to team up and alliance to face the behemoth. In order to trigger it, players can attack the Boss directly on deck or fire upon any of the ships of the fleet. If the latter, all royal ships, including the Man-o-War, will become hostile and attack the surrounding vessels. It’s possible to sink the Man-o-War, which will drop a ton of loot, but doing so would extremely difficult. If players decide to start the fight from the on board the flagship, the escorts will circle it but not fire upon it. They also won’t shot at the attackers' ships so long as they are close to the flagship. During the fight, the Man-o-War’s NPC crew will attempt to raise anchor in order to get away from the attacking ships and reengage, so players will have to defend the anchor wheel to keep the ship stationary, this is also how one would stop it once it starts to move, by lowering anchor on board (Anchor balls don’t work on it as long as it’s in boss fight mode). Once the Boss is defeated, it will drop a logbook and secret cabin key. The latter will have a ton of loot to be sold and the former will be how players take over the ship. Everyone gets up to it and uses a ”command ship” action and then a captain is chosen. None of the ships commands will be active until a captain is picked. This is also what triggers the escort fleet to attack the man-o-war if they aren’t already sunk. Once the crew is set all the ships from the players will despawn and the Man-o-War becomes their ship until all crew members leave the server. Additional crew can be hired and captaincy transferred during the session so as to leave the ship for other players. Sailing the Man-o-War When operating the Man-o-War the crew can't sell anything to the Sovereigns as they are blacklisted from their shops. A Pirate hunter AI ship mob will occasionally spawn on the horizon to try to sink it. A bounty will also be placed on the Man-o-war which can be collected by selling the ship's log to a sovereign. The Reward will be higher the better the ship's condition is, although it still gives a reward if sunk. Other pirates can take over the ship by using "command ship" on the log so long as none of the current crew are on board. Once the Man-o-War sinks it's over, it won't respawn and the crew will be disbanded back to their original ships. Closing remarks I am aware that the implementation of this ship would be very difficult and dependent on the limitations on the game itself. I'm not making this post as to argue this is a priority or even something the game needs, only how I would go about doing it. Although some players would rather to just play with more friends normally I chose to propose this method as a way to limit the amount of Men-o-War in a server in an organic way and making interacting with them a lot more dynamic. I'm happy to hear everyone's thoughs, improvements and criticisms to this idea.

The Man O' War for 6 players and a Gun Boat for a true solo player were planned during the early stages of Sea of Thieves but never came out, I would assume due to the stability issue with servers and gameplay by just having 6 ships in one server. I think an AI controlled Man O' War that worked like a moving Fort event could work, but the idea of being able to take it over wouldn't, since the crew number is still limited to 4 for Galleons, so you wouldn't have the crew to sail a Man O' War effectively. Leading me back to thinking a roaming Fort/AI controlled Man O' War would be best at least until server stability is improved like Rare have recently stated they are working on. The best ship to add would be the planned Gun Boat which is basically in between a rowboat and a sloop with a single forward facing cannon, I think a solo ship that is designed to be very easy for one person to sail would be a massive welcome for new players, as a Sloop can become very difficult for a new player to manage alone while also in combat with another ship.

Good idea.. but what do you do with the ship once you get it??? I would love bigger ships in the game, but if it takes multiple crews to man it, then what do you do? Slowly track down the 1 or 2 solo sloopers left in the server and engage them? I feel like one cool option might be to turn in the vessel for prize money. So if my crew and another get on board and take over the ship, then we could sail it to Fort Merrick for a large prize payout. It could even have cosmetics tied to it, so if you bring in 20 of the ships you can earn a title and some cool outfits. Plus, you still could use the Man O' War to do whatever you want before turning it in. As long as you are okay with the potential that others will now want to steal the ship from you to turn it in.

You could further raise the stakes by having an "M-O-W Event sign up" at all ports. Similar to claiming emissary in that you walk up to this board to claim you're going to take on the MOW and see that there's 2 other crews for a total of 4 people already on their way to fight. Now you know that your Galleon crew will be able to either Ally or Betray the other known players there to captain the MOW. Could also make it a requirement to declare the MOW Event in order to participate, but I think that goes against the "tools not rules," motto a little.

I feel like it would be just as good of an addition to have more options within the same crew sizes. like being able to choose a sloop or the chinese junk ship that was talked about. It would have different stats and a different layout which means it would have different strengths and weaknesses, like maybe it's faster with the wind than the sloop and the additional brig sized option would be fast against the wind.

I can't remember which KZbinr it was that came up with this idea, but I love it so I want to share (Also partly my ideas). Basically it's a world event similar to the Skeleton Fleet, showing a golden ship cloud in the sky. You have to go to the ship. If you climb aboard and kill all of the skeletons, your ship will dive down into the water once all crew is off of it. Then you get the ship, you cannot interact with the capstan, wheel, or sails. That's because it is on a track that goes around the entire map. Once the ship has been claimed it can be damaged. It comes with it's own supplies, but it doesn't replenish. Other ships want to come and sink it. You can fire back but since there are four crew members at max it's like a beefed Galleon in terms of fire power. Once the ship goes around the entire map back to where it spawned (without sinking), your ship will come back from out of the water and next to the Man O' War. The Man O' War will be pulled under the depths. But once the ship despawns a giant pile of loot floats to the top of the water. You can then harpoon the mass amount of loot and go and sell, but you know people will kill you. Other things that can happen are the Man O' War sinks, the loot is given to those who sank it. Before it is claimed the skeletons can shoot at your ship. And if the ship is still owned by the skeletons by the time it goes around the whole map it despawns and no loot is given. The world event would be really rare and the loot would be much better than the Fort of Fortune.

The ship could be added as a normal ship, with 6 players max, just the queue would take longer, since you would have to find a server with well, 6 player slots left, with 26 slots max that would be hard, but if the ship is slower than the brig and sloop, at any conditions I'm fine with it, since a sloop and a brig have no chance against such a big ship, especially a solo slooper. Another thing I had in my mind was to change up your idea. I was thinking that there would only be one of these ships in a server and that its marked at all times, also it would bring problems to the developers that a new ship is now your ship without leaving the server, especially because that ship was an NPC ship. One thing that also bugged me was the fact that we would have to transfer all of our loot from one to the other ship, unless we have none. Like the idea very much tho, hopefully a bigger ship or a bigger choice of ships is added soon.

I think that they should add the frigate instead of the man o war, a captained only ship with 5 cannons, 4 masts, and a crew of 6-8 closed only. This must be a captained ship, but you can actually buy upgrades for the ship, frontal cannons, more barrels, a starting lifeboat, something to protect the main masts. This would make it very powerful, however, it is only a closed crew to prevent them from being everywhere. I also think there should be a fast 3 cannon carival, which would have a crew of 3-4 and the galeon crew would be bumped up to 4-5 the man of war could be added as a rare ai only ship, with a total of 24 guns, (ten top, twelve bottom, two front) it would be a very difficult skelly ship to sink, carrying 2-3 different types of magic balls.

I was thinking an alternative to this would be the Man o' War being a massive warship captained by the GMU, to signify that they've found an overt way to breach into the Sea of Thieves. This thing is a massive, hostile warship that sails around slowly, but has guns every side of the ship. It has nothing to permit boarding via normal ways - no ladders for instance. This thing has a sealed captain's quarters and lower decks are barred off to prevent players from killing the npcs responsible for repairing should someone manage a deck shot, meaning boarders jobs are strictly to keep cannoneers off the guns. It doesn't sail around randomly either - it sails specifically towards the outposts, and has two galleons sailing in formation with it similar to the ghost ships. Once it arrives at an outpost, it will circle it for a bit. If the ship goes uncontested for a long enough time, the outpost is put into a 'lockdown' state - trading companies close their tents, shops close their doors (except the tavern) and two new GMU galleons rise from the depths to patrol the outpost. At this point, it takes aim towards the next outpost. If someone wishes to use the outpost's features, one must sink the two galleons patrolling the outpost. If all five outposts and Port Merrick are captured, then it will sail towards the sea dog's tavern. If it sails through the arch, the vessel vanishes through a portal, marking the end of the event as a failure. To make it beefier than the skeleton ships, these beasts will have a slow drain effect on the water that will rapidly increase out of battle, and a reinforced hull that is immune to terrain damage. Should someone engage the ship, then it forms a small arena in which it will sail around, to allow players to interrupt the man o' war's progress, even if only for a little bit. Should the man o' war be sunk, then there is a huge cache of treasure to be had for it as a man o' war shipwreck spawns down under the waves. Not quite on the level of a Fort of Fortune but somewhere between that and one of the other world events. This thing is meant to pack a punch and keep even a galleon crew on their toes, to encourage alliances, but also a challenge for those who REALLY want to try and take it on with only their one ship. Plus, once the beast is slain, her treasure is up for grabs by anyone, encouraging a lucrative reason to stab someone in the back. Personally, I'm nostalgic for when the skeleton fleet event was threatening. People weren't as skilled at navigating around them, cursed cannonballs weren't nerfed (if you got a jig ball on a galleon you were more than likely VERY screwed), and skeletons had some VERY sharp aim. With the nerfs to skeleton ships as a whole (no green curse balls, curse balls having a greatly reduced effect compared to before, and skeletons not being as accurate as they were), and how easy it is to pick off ghost ships that break in very few hits, I want a return to highly challenging Naval warfare.

Maybe the idea of a Man O' War can be used for the Reapers v.s. Athena PVP matches. Same rules to getting reapers or athena, turning the hourglass to the faction they wanna work on, dive and PVP, but earning the Man O' War by hunting it down first as the vid suggests. Man O' War can also probably work as a Guild system but a temporary one. Unlike an Alliance, the Guild system would spawn a Man O' War and have all players who are a part of it be crewmates like in regular ships. They could work for FOTD's, Glitterbeard, and any other world event which requires 5+ players. In both cases, since the ship would put all players together like in a regular ship, earnings would be the same as regular ships, all earn in full. Meaning that Rare can be free to add something challenging like commendations so the earnings can actually feel earned so to speak. Rough draft but could be an idea. If that can't be added (which I honestly see all the reasons why), the least Rare could do is add 1-2 more player slots to galleon. Q^Q

Honestly I'd be fine even with having queue-up available, larger party-sized ships that are constantly marked on the map due to their sheer size. That way people can avoid you if they feel, but depending on your maneuvering, and helm-manning skills, you can still catch players. It's basically getting the pros of having extra players, more firepower, and more speed (with the wind at your rear), but the cons of being harder to manage, slower to steer/turn, and constantly visible by other players - which would cause you to be both a higher profile ship that is easier to avoid. Yet, you would also be using a ship that is a much more valuable target for alliances/PVPers since only the "richest" players would be able to own one, and utilize it properly. Constantly able to be tracked on the map regardless of having unique loot, there'd be no doubt plenty of people ready to hunt you down, and even form alliances with other players on the server just to take you out. That seems like a net positive no? Bigger party, cooler ships, bigger battles, but ALSO it can encourage random strangers to work together to take down a massive ship/crew? Plus, with that there's no need to make it a world event, and you can add to the ingame economy by giving another tier of ship to buy/customize. ***GRANTED I'm somewhat new to the game, and not even a Pirate Legend yet (not to say that I'm not doing well because I'm doing very well for myself right now).

Although this sounds cool, the main reason I want a bigger ship is so that I can play with more than 4 friends. If they are going to add more ships to the game that would be cool though, like maybe ships with different stats like more mobility for less damage and defense or stuff like that. It would be fun to have that creativity when picking which boat to set sail with. But before that, the ability to save outfits would be great

I still see several major balance problems with this idea, amongst other issues: 1. The core problem of what options a sloop or small crew would have to face one of these ships is still unaddressed. Yes, the proposed man-o-war crew would be generally less coordinated, being made of up multiple crews, and would doubtlessly be even less maneuverable than a gally, but its overall firepower and strength in numbers still makes it pretty heavily unapproachable for a sloop crew. 2. Having a variable or "unknown" crew size as proposed makes it near impossible to balance the actual ship design. All the ships we currently have a very specifically designed for a specific number of crew. Number of cannons, number of sails, size of hold and amount of water the boat can take, it all is scaled to 2, 3, and 4 players respectively. As you go up in boat size, the tools at your disposal increase, but so does the complexity of the ship and the coordination required. Think about the last time you sailed a gally and one of the crew was sandbagging. Being down one pair of hands on a gally is more impactful than being down a pair of hands on a sloop, due to the complexity and teamwork required for the larger boats - this trend should continue for larger boats, but then, how many crew should it be designed for optimally? 5? 6? From the method you describe, there will be no real way to guarantee a routine number of people on board, which is a big issue, considering even one player less than intended would have a huge impact, and having more people than necessary would be even worse for balance. 3. People dont want a larger crew size just for the sake of having a larger crew size - they want a larger crew size so they can sail with more of their friends. As proposed, this is more like alliance with extra steps. It wouldnt allow you to invite or play with 5 or more of your own friends, unless they already happened to be on the same server together, in which case the larger boat is pretty redundant. 4. Theres just really not any precedent for needing a larger crew. Yes, it would be nice to sail with more people if you have more than 3 friends who regularly play, but thats just something we have to deal with. It sure would be nice to play Apex with a squad of 8, but thats just not how the game's designed. 4 people teams is incredibly standard amongst any games with team-based pvp.

I would make some additions to this idea. The idea of capturing an NPC Man Of War is a great idea, but I think there ought to also be a way for a player to go to a shipwright or a specific dock to rent or purchase a man of war that doesn't respawn when sunk, so similarly to the captured man of war concept, you have to be careful as it sinking means lost money, and this is something that should be done after making some sort of achievement such as pirate legend or some prerequisite quest that earns you this ability. Additionally, a few advantages over the galleon ought to be present beyond simply having more canons and being tankier. If anything, I think it should be no slower to operate then a galleon, which is already painfully slow. Balance refers to its combat capabilities, and though the man of war would have more canons, like the one you designed, its weaknesses over a galleon would be the lack of free respawnability, (Which I would argue IS a combat parameter), being more susceptible to fire because it being larger means getting fires under control would be more difficult, it being larger would less the impact of a normal canonball but make the effect of a cursed canonball more pronounced. Aside from combat perspective, there needs to be things a Man of War can do that a galleon simply can't. Such as having more cook stations, the ability of hook up 2 rowboats instead of 1, including a docking station directly on the main deck. Having bigger encounters, like the original meg from the hungering being a possible encounter, the old mother kraken, skeleton man-of-war spawns, all which provide greater loot drops. Also add stern side harpoons, the ability to host more then one flag by having 2 crows nests, among other possible benefits that are not combat capability to reward players for either the capture or purchase of the ship.

Interestingly enough I've had similar ideas of how a Ship of the Line/Man o' War could be added. And so far SoT has given us opportunities to see such a vessel in game, though mainly as an NPC ship: the Spanish forts (mainly bigger, more ornate treasure galleons, or something akin to the Silent Mary as a main ship guarding an important fortress), A Pirate's Life gives us an opportunity to see ships like the Dauntless and Endeavour, and ofc there's the Grand Maritime Union, who are still attempting to pierce the Shroud and enter the Sea of Thieves. It would mainly make sense from a technical and practical standpoint for the Ship of the Line to be an NPC vessel that players must team up to overcome

personally id prefer variants at the current ship tiers. but i' like the idea of the treasure ship as sort of a raid boss sort if thing. maybe rather then full on claim the man of war can have an alliance flag rased on it, then if brought safely to port it can be "sold" by interacting with the representative of the company it was stolen from and all members of the alliance who's flag was raised on it get a pay out. but the catch is that anyone can interact with the flag box to change to their alliance instead (or lower the alliance flag if there ship is out of range) (the company won't buy it back if it doesn't have an alliance flag however) if sunk it will scatter loot of the appropriate type equivalent to a gold vault in value. for respawns if the players home ship is close to the man of war and allied to it they can opt to respawn on the man of war via an alternate portal on the ship of the damned (this would still allow for crews to technically take over the man of war but would prevent 2 gallion crews from being able to join forces and become even more invincible then a gallion alliance already would be since they'd need to split focus between keeping their own ships afloat for respawn rather then being able to set up wood crates on every deck and patch holes faster then a crew could hope to make them

Major game design issue with this proposal are mast and sail silhouettes. The current design is one for sloop, two for Brig and three for galleon. This makes the ships easy to identify from a distance. Your proposal for another ship with three masts will complicate this.

I think a way to successfully add the man o' war is all of the shipwrights work on a bigger ship than the galleon (this being the man o' war) to help the fight against flameheart. When flameheart learns of this he builds his own man o' war. So the limit of this ship type per server is 1-2 max (depending on how many players there are on a server). To keep things fair they can have the same sailing mechanics that ghost admiral said in this video as well as massive turning circle. Also the tier 1 hole on the man o' war is a tier 2 hole on usual ships. This is how I think the man o' war can be successfully added while keeping to the overall sea of thieves story.

What if big ship servers when you load up you have the choice for adventure and big ships. Big ships would have the smallest ship be the gallon and have the crew size max out at 5 on the gallon rather than 4 and have a bigger ship or ships for 6,7 or even 8 player crews. This would avoid balancing against the Sloop and brig entirely. Ignoring server limitations.

It could be marked on a map like reaper bounty and if you sink to it and use the wheel, it will rise. The other crews goal to use the ship is steal the chest with the heart and sell it. The captain can't attack but he can use special anchor to get kraken to the closest enemy ship( of course that the other world events would spawn and you can just have the ship and do world events and have fun)

HitboTC proposed this idea almost exactly a little while ago. Also I don't love the idea that if it sinks, it is gone. Like you know how easy it is to sink an under staffed Galleon? This imo would be EXTREMELY easy to sink until the crew can finally staff the whole thing. Personally, if a MoW were to come to SoT, I would rather it just be like any normal ship to where you choose it in the main menu and people fill it. It can fairly easily be balanced as all they need to do is add more spots to where holes can be created. And in fact, they could make it with 4 decks like the Galleon was originally designed, and the bottom 2 decks would be at and below the water line, immediately taking on water. This would require more than one bilge to keep the MoW afloat, and it could have 8 cannons for the 8 players. But 4 cannons are on the 2nd deck and hard to aim because of the limited visibility. Meaning they would have to aim, and fire based off of the calls they get from cremates that can see better (like the helm and upperdeck cannoneers). This with the fact that the MoW would be very slow to turn, and slow to accelerate, would cause it to be a threat IF they could get a broadside on the other ship. All other ships would ave to do is stay out of it's broad (which should be easy with how slow it should be), and the second they start to put holes in the MoW, they wouldn't be able to use more than 5-6 cannons because they would take on so much water, so quickly. My point is, the devs could easily balance a MoW if they wanted.

This has been what I've been waiting for them to add. They should not call it a Man o' War however. That's because a Man o' War is just basically another term for a warship. It's not a type of ship. A sloop, a brigantine, or a galleon could be a Man o' War if they were especially meant to be combat vessels. I guess they should either call it a frigate (i.e. USS Constitution) if it has single gundeck , or a Ship of the Line (i.e. HMS Victory at Portsmouth) if two or more gundecks instead since these two types of ships were really meant to be combat vessels.

I just love the idea of roleplaying as the flying dutchman asking people to join their vessel or be killed like in the movies and being feared among the community when a man o war appears with the name flying dutchman it would so cool if something liked that happened But I think it should only be a number of man o wars in the whole game, lets say a 1000, these would be given out in world events in a period of time and when 1 captain claims the ship they can sail with it between sessions but if they dont sail it often their ship gets taken from them and put into another world event. This would make certain crews be known and needs to be taken down by multiple ships it would make the world actually feel real with actual crews that are feared among people

This is really cool but with all the balancing you would need it wouldn't be a fun ship to use for most players. But if you had an npc doing repairs, you can then focus on pvp. Once the boarder has been dealt with you can continue to fire shots, angle etc. And also up the size of the bot crew if you are playing solo. Idk would be cool

I think this defeats the object people want of the Man O’ War, which is the ability to play with more than 3 friends rather than acquiring a ship you can hardly use because it’s so hard to strike an accord with other players, I’m desperate for one to play with more of my 8-man crew. I totally get that’s not feasible in core adventures but I still have to say instanced environments outside of the open world that take 6-8 players on a Man O’ War to play raid like battles or self contained adventure’s would be better. Doesn’t negatively affect core adventure, doesn’t ruin the servers, doesn’t give people a free avenue to endlessly grind companies in peace.

I think the man o war should just work like a normal ship, but be extremely expensive and have a huge turn radius, better ways for stealth boarding, two extremely heavy anchors for 3 people each and some crew cabins in a middle deck. Also it has to be the slowest ship in the game to make it possible to escape. It would be not that op as you think because you always need someone at the wheel and two people for repairs because you have to walk 3 stairs up to empty a bucket. so max 3 guys for the cannons at one time. maybe the ship should even sink when only 2 of 3 decks are flooded like the galleon. maybe because of windows?

arena mode with 2 warships each with 12 players in different areas or new themes, such as battle in a storm with a maelstrom in the center similar to pirates of the caribbean 3, or the sea split in two with waterfalls in the middle of a straight map that has no end, a man o war against 3 galleons (adding front and rear cannons to the ship, maybe the triple barrel ones like in the flying dutchman) ,maybe add boarding hooks to test in that mode, and why not, using the black pearl and flying dutchman models in the maelstrom. i dont know how they could optimize that, because there is a maximum of 6 ships per server imagine that if it were 6 galleons (24 people in total). And although I like your idea, the alliance servers would make those people disgustingly richer without any merit. I would prefer they make design variations with the ships we already have, like 3 different models of the sloop, brigantine and galleon with differently arranged cannons, different speeds sacrificing maneuverability and/or cannons, maybe sacrificing side guns for frontals, or speed for a mortar. or different types of cannons, we would have the medium one that would be the one that we all already have, the heavy one that would have less range, takes longer to reload, makes the ship a little slower but does much more damage, and the small cannon that would be for a long Reach, slightly less damage but gives a bit more speed to the ship, perfect for catching up with runners, or being one. That would give different strategies to navigate with and fight against certain types of ships, and it would make the pvp a bit more interesting than it already is. I think they are good concepts but in reality it would be a disaster, but they could test it on Insider first. sorry for writing the bible but that's what came to mind

Man o wars were any battle ready ship and aren't specifically a galleon but I think of it as a galleon because it is big they call it a man o war because it was operated by men and was war capable. So I think a better Idea is the frigate a real ship in the size between a brigantine and a galleon I think they should buff the galleon crew to 5 and make the frigate a bit bigger than the brigantine and add 4 cannons a 4 player capstan 2 double sails plus a small sail the wheel of a galleon and I think you have a perfect ship where it won't make the brigantine or galleon useless.

Maybe 2 captains have to claim it and once they do the other ships are scuttled and the manowar is marked on the map. it becomes it's own raid boss for the remaining crews on the server.

imagine adding the man o' war and turn you into an event for every crew of 6-8 players that join the boat. Destroying the man o' war would give players 50-100k gold and ofc achivements

The way the blackpearl is structured would be of okay balance, its got several spaced out cannons, and a single lower deck with hard to aim cannons It wouldnt be too hard to balance, because its just an oversized brigantine

I think it’d be nice if we had different variations of the 3 ships in the game.

I would love a treasure ship world event! Like something with the trading companies moving large quantities of treasure toward their bank. They could do something like in Pirates of the Caribbean Online which had them travel a route. It could start with a sound similar to how a fof starts which notifies the entire server and have some sort of beacon in the sky/map which marks it's location. Other than having it be a gold hoarder fleet they could even make it a threat from the outside world with the Grand Maritime Union sending a fleet through the shroud to take the sea of thieves. Would be cool lore wise as they have been trying to get to the SOT for a long time and given that the Sovereigns are suspected to be their agents it could be. Another scenario that could be cool, although I doubt that will be the case: They could add it as a player started world event like FOTD or a voyage like Legend of the Veil. A voyage that you can buy it for doubloons as a mercenary voyage or as a rare reaper voyage (It's not like it' being used as PVP faction anyway...). Imagine the plot from Black Sails with the Urca the Lime and the spanish treasure fleet. Find some clues and map pieces, find ships logs and missing pages, bride or intimidate folk into giving clues/locations and eventualy you find the route the ships takes and where it's heading starting the event which starts with a sound for the entire server to hear + with a beacon/map marker for everyone to see. As for the event itself: They could indeed use a large Man-O-War as the flagship surrounded which is loaded with treasure (maybe even a chest of fortune) and have it be defended by between 3 - 6 other ships (a combo of brigs and galleons) which don't spawn if waves but accompany the ship from the beginning making it the hardest naval world event. After defeating the guard ships they could indeed make it so you have to board the man-o-war and have to defeat waves of enemies with a boss at the end. Defeating him drops a key to the hold which stores the loot. This would make it the hardest naval event in game which in turn could make it the most rewarding. Giving not only loads of loot like a chest of fortune but also making the man-o-war sailable for that playsession. Since it's such a large ship they could even make a guild thing out of it since it needs a bigger crew than any start crew. Could be a nice way to have multiple crews work together not only to complete the world event but also to man the ship afterwards. And yes I know, the game is called Sea of Thieves not Sea of Friends. But with guilds coming soon, I believe this might a cool thing to do with guild and add some other social aspects to to game instead of just sinking other players on sight.

i like the idea with a moving fortress but if you sink it you would get the loot like the skelly fleet, and you should not be able to sail it.

Let's say you are a crew and want to "conquer" the ship for getting another friend in the game, you do it and sail around for maybe 2-3 hours, you are stacked of loot and because some sily mistake (let's say that you for example forgot to repair a hole and didn't checked because the ship was too big) you sink. Now you have lost the ship but you can still retrieve the loot. But what happens with your friend? He now can't join for getting the rewards that he has been working on for 3 hours. You just leave him behind? Also, who would want to get this ship only for 1 voyage or 2? It doesn't give you much advantage because I guess you couldn't do HG with it and why would you use it for Tall Tales? And unless the ship is completely unfair and almost unsinkable, I don't think it would worth it to risk it for just hunting other ships if you know that when you sink you loose it. In any case, what the community ones (or ar least the crews I've met) is a bigger ship that you can buy for getting more people to play with you, because as it is right now in my crew for example we always have to leave behind one guy or two because we don't all fit in a galeon.

All the problems are something like "you can't pit them against smaller ships" or "you can only have 26 players on a server". But that's fixable by simply making "Man of War Servers". Servers where ONLY man of war ships will spawn, cap them at 3 or 4 ships per server (with a crew of 6-8) and they can have 24 players on a server doing so. Then there's no worry for it being unbalanced if every ship on the server is the same size, and simply having fewer ships on the server allows for more players per ship. Even if devs don't feel that a good option, I'd rather have less people to fight, than tell 1-4 of our friends to f**k off because we already have 4 people.

Maybe they should extend the map out further then there can b more ships or facilitate bigger ones if you have a ship in the game that is that big having to relieve on some at random joining you why just sink them since they can't manage it.
