This episode teaches how the Antebellum Market Revolution transformed the economy and lives of Americans in the 1800s. The shift from a Jeffersonian yeomen farming vision of the nation to a Hamiltonian industrial, capitalist country in the early 1800s, during the so called, "Age of Jackson."
Students learn about how the transportation revolution with steamboats, canals, and railroads made trade and travel easier as the country grew more connected. Then they learn how farming transformed with the cotton gin in the south and John Deere's steel plow and the Cyrus McCormick's mechanical reaper. These inventions led farmers to enter the market economy looking for profits while New England and the North began industrializing. Samuel Slater started the American Factory System and Eli Whitney's interchangeable parts led to the replacement of highly skilled artisans by low skilled laborers.
