Absolutely true. They were not the first...ghost singers or "dubbers" have been around since the early days of Hollywood "talkies" and musicals. They weren't even the most successful...C+C Music Factory sold far more copies with Zelma Davies miming to performances by the excellent Martha Wash. I made a documentary on Boney M, Milli Vanilli and all the other examples of this type of thing, including Martha Wash, Black Box, Technotronic, Phil Spector, Marni Nixon etc... Wow, I was 11-year old when Boney M. came and I began collecting their music, but it was already clear to me who sang the Male vocals and who were the two women who did sing and who was the one who didn't sing -on the recordings. The REAL LIVE Concerts (like in Dublin, Sun City etc), they all sang LIVE including Bobby and Maizie (but Frank didn't), in the Playback Concerts and TV-shows they didn't sing LIVE at all: only Mimed, in the Semi-Live Playback Concerts they all sang on top of the Full Playback Vocals. After disbanding they formed their own groups an continued shows/concerts with the same variatiing methods, depending of the needds of Venue/circumstances.

I'm so glad you're taking this angle because it's so true! Frank Farian was talented enough to create some memorable tunes-I'll give him that! Boney M's imperial phase from '76 to '80 is a testament to his production genius, with such memorable tunes as "Rivers of Babylon," "Daddy Cool," "Ma Baker," "Rasputin" and "Gotta Go Home," just to name a few. But his refusal to make Bobby Farrell sing is just stupid. Honestly, aside from his crazy dance moves and on-stage persona, there was hardly any contribution from him on any of those songs. He could've easily put his voice there, maybe even buried behind Liz, Marcia, and Maizie, but that didn't happen. Same with Rob and Fab. Farian was indeed the villain in both cases.
