Japanese here, just started watching the video. A big part of GT's musical identity is shared with the jazz fusion scene of the 1980s and 90s. THE Square as well as Casiopea are actually very similar bands that have shared band members at points (including Andoh-san himself!) Most of the tracks from GT1 and 2 come from THE Square's albums, and I recommend people to check out Casiopea, Hiroshi Suzuki, ADAM at, Masayoshi Takanaka, PYRAMID and the Jazz Fusion genre as a whole.

Haha! I was about to mention this. Glad you did it for me. Also note how the jazz fusion genre has gained popularity in recent years thanks to KZbin. There is a place for this genre in popular culture today. Polyphony should take note of this as well and bring back Isamu Ohira for GT8.

Yep, all fantastic music. Casiopea's run from '79 to '82 is well worth checking out, from the self-titled debut (the red race car album), Super Flight and Make Up City in between, then the Tokyo live performance that became Mint Jams. It all got added to Spotify recently alongside The Square and Takanaka's stuff, so they're more accessible now than they ever were before. A lot of communities have sprung up online for Japanese jazz fusion and 70's/80's Japanese music as a whole over the past few years. I guess it's the result of people going beyond 'city pop' and Plastic Love and seeing what other great music was produced back then. In particular there's a lot of love for Yellow Magic Orchestra and its members Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takahashi (RIP). There's a really in-depth chart that lists a bunch of essentials for each genre, it's in the sidebar of r/citypop under "Where do I start?". If you like PS1/PS2 GT music, you'll love what you'll hear.

@@Roflwaffle16 Ah, thank you! Likewise; it's good to see GT video essays that do proper research and start new conversations about these games. I appreciated the bit that talked about Masahiro Andoh, T-Square and how songs like Truth were used in Japanese motorsports broadcasts. Helps give context for how jazz fusion made its way into racing games, especially as fifth-gen consoles allowed for multi-layer MIDI arrangements and compressed licenced music.

The funny thing is that I have heard GT5's lounge music literally outside numerous times. It's been used in a lot of my local bars and cafes. That sort of soundtrack fits that exact theme perfectly due to their relaxing, soothing nature. But for a racing game, I guess it depends on what sort of feel you're after. GT5's menu music was fantastic when I'm just looking at my cars. Maybe not the best fit when I'm prepping to race, but it's among my favorites of the series just because it's been my go-to for chill music.

EmpLemon has another video about videogame music and how it is far and away the best music to use for video essays. It's high quality most of the time and has no copyright so it can be used anywhere. As for Gran Turismo, i was fortunate enough to know and love the series since day one, so of course I'm in love with the music too. Gran Turismo 5 has about 3 HOURS of music with NO LOOPS, which is my favorite soundtrack in the series. Sometimes, it really is all about the vibe and the atmosphere and Gran Turismo really is the only game I can think of where navigating the menus of cars is just as fun as the driving.

As for the Japanese F1 theme music, T-SQUARE also did 'themes' for some legendary drivers like Senna, Prost and Schumacher. The music is so iconic that F1 arcade games in Japan used the tunes although uncredited. I even got myself some of T-SQUARE albums, and do recommend try getting at least one from each decade-especially since T-SQUARE faced a major change with Mr Andoh left the band in 2021.

GT4's soundtrack is my absolute favourite. The relaxed jazz style in the main GT menu is perfect for scrolling through car dealers and upgrade shops. Can't disagree that GT3 got you hyped up better though. The best way to do it imo would be to have GT4's style for the main GT menu and dealers etc, and then GT3's more energetic style when you go to select an event.

Music in games and its influence is heavily understated. Many songs and music genres, licensed and unlicensed, are often associated with the personality of the games we remember hearing them in, especially the ones we played a lot. The music in games has also influenced my genre in music and has made me dive deeper into the genre. Overall I think this vid is great as it dives deeper into the composers and artists behind the works👍🏾

The effect that music has on media in general is so great it's hard to even describe it. Be it Video game soundtracks, movie soundtracks or tv shows. If I hear baba o riley i immediately think of CSI (same goes for all the who Songs used for the different csi shows), when I hear danger zone i immediately see the tomcat launching, binary sunset always takes me to a galaxy far far away and leave her johnny leave her brings back memories of sailing across the ocean in black flag. And if you saw any of that without the music then yes it would still be good, but it just wouldn't give you the same emotions. I absolutely love top gun but the opening scene just wouldn't be nearly as memorable as it is without the top gun anthem changing seamlessly to danger zone right as the catapult launches the plane off the deck. I can still remember scenes from books i last read almost a decade ago just because of the music playing in the background when I was reading them. I don't know if that's just me, but i think music is the most powerful thing when it comes to memories and emotions.

GT wouldn't be the same without these songs, I've got friends who aren't into cars or Gran Turismo who love these songs, and I think it's a testament to the incredible work from Andoh and Ohira. I certainly don't mind the "direction" the franchise has taken, hell I love Lenny Ibizarre's remixes of classical songs, but I do miss a bit songs like "From the East" or "An Old Bassman", for example. Very fun overview of the franchise's soundtrack over the years. Completely unrelated to the subject on the video, but speaking of "whiplash"... seeing the glorious, original Grand Valley Speedway in the footage here and comparing to the abomination they did to it in GT7 genuinely has just depressed me.

I think what makes the GT soundtracks (at least the 1st game's JP OST and 2 and 3 in particular) so great is you can be doing a fairly mundane in-game activity like browsing the dealership, tuning or cleaning your car in GT Auto or looking at the license tests or events, and your ears are having the musical equivalent of a banquet meal and jamming out. My favourite examples of this are the tracks Like the Wind from GT1 and The Motorious Zone from GT2. (later remixed for GT4) Both being great catchy songs, and yet they were religated to being the themes for the options and save transfer menus, the OPTIONS and SAVE TRANSFER MENUS. The most mundane menus you'll probably spent 2 mins in at most and yet the music will just be going off and going hard, that just demonstrates the brilliance of Isamu and his work on the franchise's early years.

I know that Gran Turismo OSTs (mostly menus) have tendencies to become potential picks for content creation background musics given their vibes. Out of all GT OSTs, I have my bias towards the first two GT games mainly because of their dealership musics. Some of the GT4 musics are my long-time favorites, and from GT3 it's the arcade selection screen that's been stuck on me. On another topic, I wasn't aware that the genre of most (if not all) of the musics in the game classify as jazz fusion until way, way late. I have this thing where I have my favorite video game soundtracks from various games and yet I have difficulties of figuring out what genre these particular soundtracks are classified as.

The key of creating a memorable soundtrack is to create short melodic composition within sequences that only handful of composers mastered the art like Nobuo Uematsu, then place it on places that you will always encounter, like main menu or most common area you visit. This is the reason why the Chocobo Theme is more memorable than the entirety of Genshin Impact OST. You can play any Genshin song out in the open and not anyone knew what it is besides hardcore fans or you told them to. You can play the Chocobo Theme out in the open and almost everyone recognizes it.

Although I've been playing the Gran Turismo series since 2002 (GT Concept Tokyo-Geneva was my first game in the series, oddly...) and immediately loved the music, it was actually GT 5 and 6's more relaxed menu music that got me into Jazz Fusion as a genre, since the songs composed by Satoshi Bandoh were standouts for me in the PS3 era (Dark Line is wonderful, I won't hear otherwise!). I found Bando was the drummer of this little band called T-Square, and when I looked into their stuff...well, they're now one of my favourite bands. I think I liked the soft Jazz of the PS3 era since I always saw it as a soothing cooldown after an intense race - it was incredibly relaxing to just browse cars and look through the menus to.

The music is so authentic, and perfect for the series is because it didn't try to be edgy, or badass at all. It is classy. The game is about cars, and it respects everything about cars, the soundtrack dont want to take away your attention from the cars, it serves more as an undertone for the amazing experience you have browsing through the menus, checking out the amazing variety and number of cars, having a race etc. I know some people who are really REALLY in love with everything about cars, they adjust the stuff on the them, build them etc. and they are the kind of people who have not a single hint of trying to be cool or anything, they are easy-going chill people even if they sit in something the whole city could just dream about. Thats the kind of vibe im getting out of the GT soundtrack. Not bragging about the knowledge he owns, but happily sharing it if you are curious with its own little nerdy, but classy way. Listening to what you found out about the guy composing it i have to say his person couldn't be in more sync with that vibe, as he created something brilliant, you know it was him, he knows its him, but he dont care about bragging about it or take too much credit for what the game is. He did something he is good at out of pure passion for what he does. If Need for Speed is the kind of guy that goes out in the night racing with his optic-tuned BMW, then Gran Turismo is the guy who built everything on his car.

I pay close attention to game soundtracks, and the composers of the _GT_ series had done a great job with the ambience and feeling that jazz tracks bring to a racing game. I absolutely love the original _GT_ soundtrack, especially the japanese _GT1_ soundtrack: so many great songs, like "Mr. 4WD", "Take Your Dream On", that original home song, the winning race song (which was reused for the Bronze medal in license tests), amongst others. Those jazz tracks are so remarkable. Isamu Ohira, Masahiro Andoh are examples of outstanding composers. I'm very grateful Polyphony has reused and remixed the original japanese release of GT1 soundtrack for it's later games. It was a real pity to listen to the US/Europe GT1 version soundtrack with all that kinda techno/electronic music that had nothing to do with the original real soundtrack, which came from the Japanese version.

the backwards version, i grew up on gran turismo thanks to my brother getting a playstation and both of us being gear heads. he later on became a mechanic and im a musician working at a county park lol, and i recently remembered a lot of the music from a relaxing playlist" here on youtube. what a fantastic group of songs. also playing a lot of grand tour 98 probably played into me loving the music so much. its very "driving" if you will lol. the trip from GTA 5 is still my favorite.

Fun fact: Masahiro Andoh was brought back to make some in-race music for GT6, but his tracks went unused.

Have to say that the GT Concept 2002 Tokyo Geneva outro has an impeccable piece. I used to cry on that outro because I knew the game was over - it's funny now, but as a kid it meant a lot to me to play that game.

It's great to see so many others are fascinated by the original songs in Gran Turismo. Personally, GT2 made my childhood. I was already a racing fan but the game took it to a deeper level, from which even my career choice was decided...

Gran turismo music has been used everywhere! And for me a dedicated GT fan (thanks to my dad showing me gt3 and gt4 on the ps2 which i still own and play those games) it is to the point where the music is used in roblox shooter tutorials. Like how crazy is that?? GT has come a long way and it has finally started being recognized for its greatness!

The one thing I say to people that don't play racing games is 'You don't have to play Gran Turismo or have knowledge of it. It's one of those games that proves that it's original soundtrack can rival that of MMORPGs and proves that even racing games can have soundtracks that are really really good.' And I stand by it. GT, SplitSecond Velocity and Penny Racers (to name a few) have music that to this day at 23, I listen to them outside of their games or even playing them for background music for study or hell while actually driving and for me, that's how I know that it'll stick with me for a years to come.

Great video, Roflwaffle. I love listening to GT music when I study or when I do some work at home. The jazz vibe always puts me in great mood, imagining I am in a very relaxed place. You can even smoke a cigar and drink a glass of whiskey listening to the lounge like songs.

I'm only 6 minutes in but it should be mentioned that the US and EU versions of GT2 got "My Favorite Game" by The Cardigans, albeit a remix of it for the EU version. That song was taken from an album by The Cardigans named... You guessed it: Gran Turismo

Recently I've been listening the original GT1's soundtrack (I high recommend) and I was blown away I recognized some of those tunes in GT4. Also in previous games like GT2 and 3. This franchise has defined my taste for Jazz Fusion music. I remember clearly back in 2017 I listened to Casiopea 1979 for the first time and then everything came in full circle which I'm fully grateful for it. Most people may find ridiculous to think how a game about cars can have really great music and I'll alwas firmly say: Gran Turismo has one of the best soundtrack in the videogame music history and I'll die on that hill marking those words.

Great video! I grew up with the GT series and always enjoyed the classic tracks! Cool to see how much you appreciate the music and the people behind them! I personally like both the original jazz fusion tracks from GT3/4 and the newer lounge music from GT5 and beyond. Different styles, but I like them both in their own way. I feel like, starting with GT5, the game series became more refined and classy. Collecting exotic cars and checking them out in the new photo mode was a big part of the game now. The lounge music fit this new aspect of the game/menu. Although, I can definitely see why you favor the high tempo jazz fusion tracks that get you hyped up for races.

Gran Turismo 2 is the GT game I’ve played the most in the entire franchise, but Gran Turismo 4’s soundtrack gives me such nostalgic feeling. Light Velocity takes me back when I first got pirated version of GT4 with my PS2 when my mom bought it for me. And Mission Impossible and GT World reminds me of 12 year old me in middle school playing GT4 every single day for hours upon hours. Thank you for this video, you took me back to my childhood. ❤️

Ohira left the games in 2005, when social media was just starting to get mainstream, but wasnt as embedded into our culture as it is now. Hell, if you go back 7 years from then, to 1998, most people didnt even have internet in their homes. It's been 15 years since his claim to fame, so it's sad, but not unrealistic for a composer to fall of the face of the earth like that given the dates... I remember loving the Gran Turismo games, playing each one the moment they came out since the first one.
