Japanese here, just started watching the video. A big part of GT's musical identity is shared with the jazz fusion scene of the 1980s and 90s. THE Square as well as Casiopea are actually very similar bands that have shared band members at points (including Andoh-san himself!) Most of the tracks from GT1 and 2 come from THE Square's albums, and I recommend people to check out Casiopea, Hiroshi Suzuki, ADAM at, Masayoshi Takanaka, PYRAMID and the Jazz Fusion genre as a whole.
@alphamaledriveshard Жыл бұрын
Haha! I was about to mention this. Glad you did it for me. Also note how the jazz fusion genre has gained popularity in recent years thanks to KZbin. There is a place for this genre in popular culture today. Polyphony should take note of this as well and bring back Isamu Ohira for GT8.
@TeaKanji Жыл бұрын
Yep, all fantastic music. Casiopea's run from '79 to '82 is well worth checking out, from the self-titled debut (the red race car album), Super Flight and Make Up City in between, then the Tokyo live performance that became Mint Jams. It all got added to Spotify recently alongside The Square and Takanaka's stuff, so they're more accessible now than they ever were before. A lot of communities have sprung up online for Japanese jazz fusion and 70's/80's Japanese music as a whole over the past few years. I guess it's the result of people going beyond 'city pop' and Plastic Love and seeing what other great music was produced back then. In particular there's a lot of love for Yellow Magic Orchestra and its members Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takahashi (RIP). There's a really in-depth chart that lists a bunch of essentials for each genre, it's in the sidebar of r/citypop under "Where do I start?". If you like PS1/PS2 GT music, you'll love what you'll hear.

@@Roflwaffle16 Ah, thank you! Likewise; it's good to see GT video essays that do proper research and start new conversations about these games. I appreciated the bit that talked about Masahiro Andoh, T-Square and how songs like Truth were used in Japanese motorsports broadcasts. Helps give context for how jazz fusion made its way into racing games, especially as fifth-gen consoles allowed for multi-layer MIDI arrangements and compressed licenced music.

The funny thing is that I have heard GT5's lounge music literally outside numerous times. It's been used in a lot of my local bars and cafes. That sort of soundtrack fits that exact theme perfectly due to their relaxing, soothing nature. But for a racing game, I guess it depends on what sort of feel you're after. GT5's menu music was fantastic when I'm just looking at my cars. Maybe not the best fit when I'm prepping to race, but it's among my favorites of the series just because it's been my go-to for chill music.

@@TheFurryInShambles Sorry that this reply is a bit lengthy, but Andoh composed four songs for GT6, which are “Captain Speed”, “Lifeblood”, “Road King”, and “The Hot Rodder”. This playlist (kzbin.info/aero/PLfM4mjIP08YlwmV0EmJf3Egx9_ors4cAM&si=LqF-Gjssu3UeS-NJ) has the four songs (it contains every song ripped straight from the game besides the two Moon Over the Castle variants due to copyright). If you need anymore info, The Cutting Room Floor’s GT6 page has a section on these songs as well as others that had its title and artist previously unknown because you can’t listen to them in the in-game library (e.g. the instrumental songs that play before and after races). I think what makes the GT soundtracks (at least the 1st game's JP OST and 2 and 3 in particular) so great is you can be doing a fairly mundane in-game activity like browsing the dealership, tuning or cleaning your car in GT Auto or looking at the license tests or events, and your ears are having the musical equivalent of a banquet meal and jamming out. My favourite examples of this are the tracks Like the Wind from GT1 and The Motorious Zone from GT2. (later remixed for GT4) Both being great catchy songs, and yet they were religated to being the themes for the options and save transfer menus, the OPTIONS and SAVE TRANSFER MENUS. The most mundane menus you'll probably spent 2 mins in at most and yet the music will just be going off and going hard, that just demonstrates the brilliance of Isamu and his work on the franchise's early years.

The effect that music has on media in general is so great it's hard to even describe it. Be it Video game soundtracks, movie soundtracks or tv shows. If I hear baba o riley i immediately think of CSI (same goes for all the who Songs used for the different csi shows), when I hear danger zone i immediately see the tomcat launching, binary sunset always takes me to a galaxy far far away and leave her johnny leave her brings back memories of sailing across the ocean in black flag. And if you saw any of that without the music then yes it would still be good, but it just wouldn't give you the same emotions. I absolutely love top gun but the opening scene just wouldn't be nearly as memorable as it is without the top gun anthem changing seamlessly to danger zone right as the catapult launches the plane off the deck. I can still remember scenes from books i last read almost a decade ago just because of the music playing in the background when I was reading them. I don't know if that's just me, but i think music is the most powerful thing when it comes to memories and emotions.

as a self taught musician i can guarantee you that i would be nowhere without the music of gran turismo. i grew up on video games and their music during my most formative years so video game-esque music is my forte and throughout gran turismo there are so many complex and just genius/memorable melodic ideas, immersive moods, atmospheres, and just charm just seeping from every pore of this franchise. GT1 has that mechanical, industrial, simulation vibe and lends itself to so many moods. cheery mysterious and even somber. i love that the japense GT1 music got repurposed and re-orchestrated into GT2’s soundtrack in really creative ways (and i wish more games would reference their older music like this in fun and innovative ways) and who can forget all of the lovely 90’s eastern jazz and fusion that coats this series like When The Rains Come from GT6 or the rock in 5OUL ON DISPLAY by Daiki Kasho from GT5. it gives my musical heart so much joy and suffice it to say i know almost the entirety of both versions of the original trilogy’s soundtrack bottom to top and i love hearing it’s music just out in wild. i think that it’s unique enough that people like using it in their videos and media especially for other GT fans to point out.

The key of creating a memorable soundtrack is to create short melodic composition within sequences that only handful of composers mastered the art like Nobuo Uematsu, then place it on places that you will always encounter, like main menu or most common area you visit. This is the reason why the Chocobo Theme is more memorable than the entirety of Genshin Impact OST. You can play any Genshin song out in the open and not anyone knew what it is besides hardcore fans or you told them to. You can play the Chocobo Theme out in the open and almost everyone recognizes it.

GT, SplitSecond Velocity and Penny Racers (to name a few) have music that to this day at 23, I listen to them outside of their games or even playing them for background music for study or hell while actually driving and for me, that's how I know that it'll stick with me for a years to come.

@Foxy 1525 believe me, FOUC has a great soundtrack which I listen to. When making the post I was more talking the Original soundtrack rather than licensed some people may not like the rock/metal soundtrack of UC.

The fact that i'm here thanks to the meme explanation video, makes "Daihatsu Midget" comment even more memorable. Now, as someone who watched my older brother and cousins playing GT2-4 when i was a kid, Gran Turismo music has been imprinted in my mind just like the sims shopping themes.

Gran turismo music has been used everywhere! And for me a dedicated GT fan (thanks to my dad showing me gt3 and gt4 on the ps2 which i still own and play those games) it is to the point where the music is used in roblox shooter tutorials. Like how crazy is that?? GT has come a long way and it has finally started being recognized for its greatness!

Sweet 16 by Feeder was the first song I ever memorised after hearing it in Gran Turismo.

I'm only 6 minutes in but it should be mentioned that the US and EU versions of GT2 got "My Favorite Game" by The Cardigans, albeit a remix of it for the EU version. That song was taken from an album by The Cardigans named... You guessed it: Gran Turismo

Recently I've been listening the original GT1's soundtrack (I high recommend) and I was blown away I recognized some of those tunes in GT4. Also in previous games like GT2 and 3. This franchise has defined my taste for Jazz Fusion music. I remember clearly back in 2017 I listened to Casiopea 1979 for the first time and then everything came in full circle which I'm fully grateful for it. Most people may find ridiculous to think how a game about cars can have really great music and I'll alwas firmly say: Gran Turismo has one of the best soundtrack in the videogame music history and I'll die on that hill marking those words.

GT wouldn't be the same without these songs, I've got friends who aren't into cars or Gran Turismo who love these songs, and I think it's a testament to the incredible work from Andoh and Ohira. I certainly don't mind the "direction" the franchise has taken, hell I love Lenny Ibizarre's remixes of classical songs, but I do miss a bit songs like "From the East" or "An Old Bassman", for example. Very fun overview of the franchise's soundtrack over the years. Completely unrelated to the subject on the video, but speaking of "whiplash"... seeing the glorious, original Grand Valley Speedway in the footage here and comparing to the abomination they did to it in GT7 genuinely has just depressed me.

I loved GT4 soundtrack to the bone now, and fun fact in mitsubishi, toyota, daihatsu, and yamaha dealer in my country. Everytime i get there with family, friends, or myself there's always 1 GT music played on the background especially GT4.

Worth mentioning that Kasho was the main composer for Mirage. The song infamously known thanks to the Yellow Evo meme that was further touched upon in the Gran Turismo Meme Cars video

I was very sleepy watching a youtube video once then suddenly I heard them play the garage music from GT6 and that woke me up immediately for some reason.

Ironically, the soundtrack(s) I love the most are ones that never appear in videos. Home, the gt4 version, is by far my favourite, it's just... So... Calm, and nostalgic. Always reminds me of 4 year old me picking a car to race with my dad (he obviously always won, I basically crashed in every single turn)
