As an 11B for 4 years who prior to BCT/OSUT hadn’t ever fired a weapon and wasn’t immediately issued an optic for my rifle I can tell you that deploying ACOG’s became an immediate force multiplier in our unit amongst the already proficient shooters we had. While any optic from a variable zoom optic to a red dot can increase your target acquisition time in addition to your lethality at various ranges, the huge advantage on the battlefield from what I can see, is that even a unit’s minimum skilled shooters can utilize this technology to match the effectiveness and lethality of their more experienced and battle tested battle buddies.

If I’m remembering correctly, my USMC issued M14 weighed around 12 pounds and I still managed to hit a target at the range 500 yards away in the prone position. Most times in the V Ring. Since I wasn’t a big guy (140 lbs.), I’d say most anyone should be able to handle this weapons system.

The Austrian AUG steyr had a 1.5 sight on it as standard in 1978 and it was introduced into Australia when I was serving in the reserves. It instantly increased the accuracy of everyone's shooting, even me, significantly. In one engagement in western Somalia a baddie fired at an Australian patrol. 7 patrol members fired shots resulting in 6 simultaneous head shots. They are still arguing about who hit the window frame inches from his head. The machine gunner and the point man did not get to fire. Imagine what that squad could do with a smart sight.

Well integrated optics dates back as far as first British post-war bullpup rifle and G36 and G11 had these as well. In any case, Steyer Aug was far ahead of its time and with some refresh, it could still be incredible weapon.

I did cadets here in Perth over 25 years ago I was 14, all the WA cadets went to a army base outside of Northam and competed against each other, one of the days we drove to some range and we all got to shoot styres it was sick, it was the first gun I ever shot and I hit 17 out of 20 targets, the targets were 3 different ranges of flip up targets the longest must have been like 250-300 meters and we were laying down

We did all that stuff by hand with a compass, protractor, and a map board. I'm sure you've all heard of the acronym F.E.B.A. Forward Edge of Battle Area. Well, we operated BEYOND the FEBA. This is why we were called "17 pop-ups", "17 Kill me" (our MOS was 17K, later 96Romeo) That was our life expectancy in '83 in Germany on the border.

I went through bootcamp in 2010 w/ a platoon that got a fresh out of the bag rifles, and being told we would be one of if not the last rotations to go through bootcamp with the iron sights. In combat training that fall, we all had ACOGs. It was a point of pride that we all got to overcome the challenge with irons.

That's the same time I went through. Trained on irons in basic and told Kentucky windage is the devil. Get to MCT and receive an ACOG and told you don't adjust the scope for windage, you have to use Kentucky windage with the lines on the scope. Worked well enough and I always shot expert both with irons and optics so both are good in my book.

I played with the acog once in the army, decided I liked the M68 better also know as aim point comp M2. The problem with the acog is it is a scope with a very small rear lens making it hard to acquire targets fast. Once I learned how to use the M68 by purchasing one and mounting it to my personal M4 (spikes tactical ST15) I came to love it. It also saved my but in Afghanistan. With the acog when you have just star light to go by you can't see threw it at all. If you can see your target at all you can hit it with a red dot.

​@Riorozen Yeah, I don't like them, either. I predominantly use red dot and magnifier. It's just how I like to train. Home defense and even SHTF defense situation is very unlikely going to be a sniper-type situation. Will most likely be CQB. How many officers, store owners or home owners had to engage a thug at 200 yards? It's a really rare situation. Even in WWII, most engagements were under 100m, which is why carbines and smgs became so popular.

In February, 2004, I was in a Marine infantry unit as we entered Iraq with an M16A2 service rifle with iron sights and no doors on our humvees. Drove up to Al Taqqadum where the Army was located and they all had Gucci M4s with Aimpoints and 203s. Only our SNCOs had any optics. We continued our entire deployment, including ops in Fallujah, Iskandyriah, and Haditha, like that. Some of the "lucky" Marines had A4s, but many of us still had the A2s. I'm 2005, I was back in Fallujah with an ACOG, but I wasn't able to properly sight it in, so I found myself using a penny to sight it in during firefights. Good times. We make do lol

I wonder if this system will result in Soldiers/Marines getting lost in their zero with the reticle constantly changing. You range a target at 850m and engage, then have close contact at 150m and forget to re-range in the optic sending everything high. Same thing happens with dialing, you get under stress and get lost in the turrets and forget you already dialed a few MILs. It would seem a fixed reticle but with changing illuminated holdover dots based on the computer input would allow you to use the system for point of aim, but also ignore it for rapidly changing target distances and be able to use it as a traditional holdover reticle. Although hard to tell without seeing the actual reticle and how it changes in use.

This system was purchased thru TrackingPoint (owned by Talon Precision Optics now) about 5-6 years ago. There was a button on the TP system that you pushed for the laser to recalculate your new known target and it's range. So like flipping the selector switch from safe to semi/fun mode being drilled into a Soldiers head, the optic transfer of one range to another, should also be ingrained the same way. Plus, I'm sure the DOD geeks (SPAWARE/APG/ATEC/etc...) have made it more simple and intuitive (dumbed it down) for the end user.

@@jmiyagisan This is a problem with all the new tech. While it has the ability to provide superior information/capability, it also can increase workload under stress. The less clicky things to mess with the better. Even with old iron sights there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence of soldiers setting the sight for a further range and forgetting it’s set there in combat. I’m not discounting the system as valuable but the way the user interface is will make a big difference in how easy it is to get lost in the settings. Even in precision rifle competition you see competitors forget they have some MILs dialed from a prior engagement and then mistakenly try and use an incorrect holdover.

History of optics is quite retarded, people who used them were getting tons of kill counts while sadly humanity shows, it took 'decades' for the best militaries to catch onto why optics and certain things that existed are important to have. After USMC were issued ACOG, the amount of accurate shots to head on dead combatants went up tremendously, according to public sources. No reason not to trust something that is just a magnifying glass, and in this case fire calculations for point-and-aim will only increase lethality further with even less training. Good to see there is finally a potential for no people on the ground dying while still being lethal and able to carry out a mission using this future technology.

Civil War snipers were also one trick ponies as they were slow to load. They achieved accuracy by having a polygon shaped bullet and a barrel that twisted (rather than having rifling grooves). These were exactly as difficult to forge and load as they sound, and it fouled up after a few shots.

*some* civil war snipers. some had sharps rifles which used round bullets with traditional rifling. whitworth rifles were very expensives. i almost certain most civil snipers had sharps.

Whitworths (from England) were more common on the South's side, iirc, precisely because they had to source almost all their arms from overseas vendors, or capture them from the North. And when the vast majority of everyone involved are using ML rifles, being stuck with a Whitworth that takes a couple extra seconds than a different ML to reload isn't that big a deal; a sniper is going to take far more time setting up the shot than reloading anyway...

It's bullshit. I have an 1-6x and it's still not enough to reach 900 yards, or even 600 yards, from what I'm hearing from civilians using LPVO's. Their fancy computer won't fix that stupid decision. Poor planning, pipe dream. If they invested in better training and just the LPVO itself, it could be much better. Instead, we get the MCX Spear (which can NOT handle mud) and this "meteorologist" overkill 2.5lbs piece of shit. I'd rather run a 6x ACOG (machine gun variant) than this system. However being a Marine I knew the only guys that get scopes are snipers and recon. Ive been retired since 95 and am extremely happy to see the USMC finally get with the program. I'll never understand the Military worrying about purpose built CQB weapons systems. If you simply adopt a rifle and ammo combo like the hk416 and mk262 or m855a1 that is effective out to 600 yards then it will be effective at 10 yards. Are soldiers really needing to take another 2 or 4 inches off their rifle for cqb? Seems like an m4 or hk416 is already small enough.

The ups - The increased maximum engagement range can be a massive advantage; Assuming the area of operations allows for it. The increased accuracy of shots means that higher caliber arms can be used without the risks involved in the massive increase in load slowing the operator down (due to the increase in range). The downs - This might result in operators getting out of touch with the basics; If the battery goes out or there is a malfunction (accidental or sabotage), the operator might be caught flat-footed in an engagement. The sensor suite can potentially be vulnerable to scrambling or jamming. And to go back to the operators, another risk is them ending up overly relying on the scope, resulting in situations where they might try relying on it when they need to be thinking on their feet; That would be a curse of it becoming too good a system only though. Finally, the issue of the maintenance requirements of the scopes; I don't know how well the old wisdom holds up, but most operators are notoriously sloppy with their weapon maintenance. If the scope is maintenance heavy, or requires some special skills to maintain, it might hamper it's overall longevity, causing an otherwise great tool to fall out of favour. PS - The reason why scopes are rarely talked about as firearm enhancement is after their large scale adoption, they just became a well known quantity for most, I believe. When it is implicitly decided what scope you need for the job, the question becomes what the other trinkets should be.

Especially if this optic were to fail extra training I would assume would be taken in order to allow operators to still utilize redundant features in order to remain in the fight until they can get back and replace/repair the optic.

Good point. At 1x, it is as fast an any other variable powered scope. The etched reticle is always in the field of view, and you have the option of illuminating the horseshoe or selecting a single dot.

Back in the 80's I was part of testing iron sights against the new gen of optic sights. I was in the British Army and we were using the LA1 A1, or the SLR 7.62mm. At both short and long distance the iron sights managed to get more rounds downrange with a higher hit ratio. This was due to knowledge of shooting and wider target view. With sights the shooters had to seek targets through the optics which took longer. During the first Gulf war I was amused that American forces had a habit of holding their weapons over their heads, if behind a wall for example, and just spraying rounds towards the enemy in the hope of hitting the target. They called it fire suppression, we called it a waste of ammo. So I would say that SF Forces could benefit from computer type sights and also snipers. But for your average grunt? It's just something else he can break.

At my local range I regularly hit a gong out at 500m with my 80 year old 303 and watch guys with their modern rifles and scopes hit the dirt. They look at you gob smacked. Fundamentals of shooting are more important.

@@hjagger Your choice of .303 is great. I've many hours of range time with it. It was such a good weapon that the Brit Forces converted many of them to 7.62 so snipers could use them without having to carry a different kind of ammo.

Every time I learn something new about the NGWS my idea finds more confirmations: this system will not be adopted for every soldier, because in urban combat or CQC a 5.56 SBR with a red dot is superior to this weapon in every aspect, however this package sound absolutely perfect fo a designated marksman. Thanks to this technology you need far less training to field a designated marksman and you drastically reduce the human error from the equation. The army will end up having more designated marksmen in their ranks and the NGWS will also help to ease of the weight of automatic riflemen by giving them a new, lighter LMG. Basically if I had to guess the NGWS program will not replace the 5.56 component of the army but the 7.62x51 LMGs and DMRs with a new 6,5 system.

For a DMR - maybe. For "everyone" normal carry, patrol, or CQB - O Hell No! I hugely prefer a light rifle with a Red Dot (2moa or bullet drop reticle) mounted away from my eye(fast and effective to 300+-). A magnifier is added for distance work out to 600-700+. A light weapon is quick to get on target and easier to maintain holding it up in front (shouldered) for an extended time. "Up-Close" happens fast and is most dangerous, getting on target fast keeps you alive. Leave the heavy, complicated longer range stuff for when "Up-close" is not a threat.

Case in point. In Vietnam a firebase was under attack. A grunt with a 1911A1 was running around the corner of a structure, as was a VC with an AK47, in the opposite direction. They actually collided at the corner. Who won? The grunt with the 45 center punched the VC, collapsing him like a sack of potatoes. Speed indeed kills. On another note, it's doubtful a single 9mm impact would have worked as well with FMJ.

i think this would push the bullpup out of compitition..all the weight would be held by the gunners arm and shoulder. you dont have anything on the front it will be unbalanced and would be harder to shoot. the front would just recoil like a wild horse on full auto

The weight of the scope is not concentrated in the rear. It's in the middle, with the suppressor at the front and mechanism in the rear. It's the perfect ballance for a system around 13 lbs or close to 6 kg. If anything, this will be an advantage for the bullpump. I'm sorry to say it traditionalists, but the bullpump will probably win. A rifle of this weight build around a bullpump design will be able to get the the cross hairs on target quicker than the two other competitors. On top of that, the ammo is also lighter than Sig's.

I could see a Squad Designed Marksman having one of these, initially...at least until they have enough to roll-out to everyone. 2.5 lbs. is a little chunky and it sits high on the rifle. I think everyone will want to run a vertical Grip-Pod to counteract the torque on the rifle from the high center of gravity.

Aircraft use a system called “CCIP” for placing dumb bombs. Tanks use something similar to place shots, showing you where to point your gun to put a round on the target. . Old battleship guns require you to hold the trigger, only fire when the shot is lined up to account for the rolling of the sea, and use a (mechanically encoded) program to compute an aiming point given the relative motion of the target, rotation of the earth, etc. Rifles can use advanced versions of these software to place shots with accuracy approaching 100%. This is really, really old technology, shrunk down. It would go a little like this: Target acquired and lazed for ranging. AI begins to track the target and generates aimpoint; compensating for target motion by changing the aimpoint if motion mode selected. Soldier pulls trigger, and holds it, while aligning rifle with aimpoint. Rifle calculates aimpoint continuously based on rifle’s orientation in space, and automatically discharges when aligned with aimpoint. Bullet hits target with perfect accuracy.

As these become more common I would expect soldiers to be equipped with laser detectors on their torso. This would allow some warning that you are being targeted before the round flies. Similar to fighter jets getting an audible tone telling them they are being locked by an enemy fire control system.

@@TheBruces56 I mean sure. They are IR lasers normally and having a certain pattern the laser itself costs cents. As does the microcontroller you would need to generate the same pattern. There will be no tech to differentiate that. If an enemy wants to do that you have no chance. They will be able to distribute and build the decoys for little money. And no. A false alarm would be really dangerous in an urban environment. Just think that someone is targeting you from one direction. So you take cover behind objects. But in fact the enemy is in the exact opposite direction and now you are not moving and open to fire with no real way of retreating. It would be devastating. If that would even happen once the trust in the laser detectors would be destroyed and no one would use it.

The quandary: the optics on an M4 make no sense (the rifle isn't effective out to 800+ meters) while the 6.8 rifles without the LR optics are overkill at shorter ranges. Then, you can move onto these sights. I think they will definitely find a way to reduce/streamline this - look at laser sights from 1970/80s, they were massive, compared to PEQ-15 etc, I think in 10 years this battle-comp style sight will be common and easy to carry, though probably not affordable for most civvies.

Literally learned how to shoot on the M16A4 with the ACOG, I can honestly say I totally took it for granted. Shooting targets at 200-300yards is so incredibly easy with that thing. When I started buying and building my own rifles with red dots and irons, I started to appreciate how incredible that optic is. I have particularly bad astigmatism as well, and the etched prism ACOG is miles better for me than any red dot or holographic sight could ever be. For me, its totally worth the 1400 asking price.

Well, I joined the USN(1961-1963) to avoid being drafted and was VERY fortunate. I was given the opportunity to receive SCUBA training and was assigned a collector for the Marine Biology Museum @ Pt. Mugu(SoCal). Worked with the Porpoise Training program also @ Pt. Mugu/China Lake. If I was going to join the current military I think it would probably be the Air Force. What's the go with the laser rangefinder and EMCON concerns? Reliably hitting a "baddie" at 900metres sounds wild. Technology should be going the other way though, less accurate but more plasma rounds. I want Stormtroopers!

Whilst it'll be cool to watch, for some strange reason I think the 1st gen is going to get a lot of over penetration kills. Unless the firearm fires a pellet which creates a magnetic/gravity field which the plasma is contained in and when that pellet hits a target it turns of the field allowing the plasma to disperse "safely" leaving a crater in the target.

All the new combat tech and optics developments we are seeing are _really_ incredible - but one has to wonder at what point it becomes _"too expensive to loose troops"_ or _"too much danger of equip. falling in to enemy hands"_ You lose a patrol of guys with Next Gen Weapons, NG-NVG, NG-Optics, Targeting Computers and other assorted toys, you're gonna start having some really bad days..

If they could update to show if another of your squad is aiming at a solder it would rewrite ambush tactics. Imagine 8 people squad ambushing another 8 person squad and all hitting the other squad at once with no overlap. All enemies at least wounded on first shot.

Seems quite sensible to have an optic like that, however shouldn't it be welded/fixed to the frame to negate movement of the optic after firing the weapon? If the optic is meant to assist in target acquisition at longer ranges even the slightest movement may affect accuracy

This system will inevitably change tactics in modern war. It will be like a sudden proliferation of snipers on the front lines, keeping the enemy pinned down and interfering with their ability to fire and maneuver. I don't know what it will be like if every frontline soldier has one, but big changes will occur.

We aren't so good at cohesive and coherent of our movements. We change tactics and command too often,we also choose to control points instead of regions. Simply put small time and small area control allows an area to be overwhelmed easily, in the same way that it's easier to swallow a penny vs swallowing a biscuit.

You unwittingly revealed the real problem...when you said optics were probably the best chance for improving marksmanship.....you can slap any kind of optics you want on any kind of rifle...unless the soldier is properly trained in marksmanship skills all you have are Stormtroopers who couldn't hit the floor if they fell out of bed. You're right training is important but my thought is that it will continue to become less important as it already has. The acog means soldiers need less training to hit 300 meters. Stormtroopers were amazing marksman. Using lethal fire, they managed to heard terrorists to where they wanted them to go. With the belief that they had actually be trying to hit them. Will taking enemy fire. The only time we see them shooting to kill, we see them stacking bodies. Boarding the terrorist ship. Hoth.

Yes but better equipment can raise the effectiveness of any level of skill to a higher degree, and therefore also reduce the amount of skill needed to hit milestones that with older equipment required more skill to reach said milestones. To make a basic example: bolt action vs semi automatic. A trained soldier can simply _be more effective_ with a semi automatic rifle over a bolt action rifle. Skill and training still applies, but better equipment takes ones skill and training further than it could without it.

uh you dumb bro? that is what it is doing by zeroing on the target based on distance & air temp & air pressure (likely the distance cal has built in earth curve in it & bullet drop based on what gun & round they finalize it to). The only thing extra it is missing vs a sniper is a wind speed & direction at the gun as snipers will often carry one but is too bulky to fit inside the unit but since they are shooting under 1000m with the new 6.8 it wouldnt get pushed enough to matter in the wind but does have wind per-selects if you know it which will help if they are making 1000+m shot which would be very rare for a non-sniper role. I will say the built in bearing is very cool and useful to telling others where to look or shoot but be more useful if it could button ranged every 200m and overlay it so you can call out 'bearing 30 at 200m" and they could find the target in like 1second (a basic system, it would have flaws on complex terrain but you could reference landmarks easier on those & be useful for cross-country firing which is like 70% of what was done in the middle east. . Regardless no idea why the laser range finder is so big - pretty sure they could make it 1/4 as tall so the whole unit is similar size to current scopes but maybe the AA batteries are on top making it that big.

Rifles were HEAVILY implemented during the US Civil war with most being rifled by around 1863 and came out decades before that even. There were 10 companies of sharpshooters in the Civil War that used the Sharps 1848 Rifle in the Civil War. It was a .52 caliber breach loader brass casing with a double trigger and adjustable sites. They were rated for20 shots in a 24" target at 600 yards and that was out 52 years before the 1900s even started. They made 120,000 of them and the military issue version was $30 each in 1861. To be part of the Sharpshooters you had to place 10 shots at 200 yards within a 10" target on average. They measured on a string your total deviation from the center for all ten shots and you had to have less than 50" total. The Sharps rifle became the standard issue by 1862 for the roughly 1000 sharpshooters in the Union Army and they were VERY effective. Not only were they much more accurate, they could fire much faster too, and they were better trained. I think this is FAR large leap forward than iron sites to an ACOG as it reduces the training needed to train a soldier to hit out to those distances too. Adjusting for wind and drop is not impossible with older sights, but it requires much more training and understanding. This thing compensates for much more though. The other thing is it can go to 8x not 6x. This makes hitting a target at 900yard much easier. Heck even 1200 yards is well within this system.

I would be interested to know how the sight copes with mirage, which is the boiling appearance you see at long range when air at different temperatures and densities refracts light. It’s a substantial factor on a hot day. I would think mirage would also refract the beam from the laser rangefinder. These are probably picky concerns that matter only at and beyond 500 yards. I think the overall concept is great. Optical sights improve pretty much everyone’s marksmanship. If range estimation and wind correction are nailed down then the same applies.

As has been said before Generals are always fighting the last war, in jungle warfare all these scopes would be useless, in desert warfare with large open spaces scopes are useful, where the next conflict will be is unknown.

This is a lot of money (and weight) for a doctrine that achieves accuracy through volume, and wins battles by maneuver while suppressing the enemy. If this is coming to fruition, we're going to have to take a hard look at some small forces doctrine (Switzerland comes to mind) in how to fight; all while keeping in mind that urban is likely the next major fight environment.
