They did hurt themselves at the time with carts over disks, but I'll say as a retro collector, Carts are so much better than disks, a disk can trick you into thinking it works and then a few hours into a game you can't proceed because part of the disk can't be read. A cart either works or it doesn't.
@SoupyMittens2 жыл бұрын
also I find it way too easy to damage disks. They get scratched if anything gets inside the disk input thingymajig and from literally doing anything else.
@MissInformer Жыл бұрын
Agreed. I'm really sad that my Tony Hawk Underground 2 GC game doesn't read properly anymore.. it'll boot into the game and get into a mission level, but then it'll show a red screen that says "your game has encountered an error. Please do not remove disks while the console is turned on". No matter what, i get that screen after about 30 minutes into the game. It's a shame... The disk and case are signed by the skate god himself

I love how nowadays we're basically heading back to cartridges to some extent once the technology overcame its one big limitation of low storage space and now its basically kicking disks ass in just about every front. wonder how things could of been had the n64 somehow got the modern improvements to cartridge technology but had a similar storage capacity of disks at the time (and just that while everything else stayed the same)down to even its cost.
@HerculesMays3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've always much preferred cartridges over discs as a gamer for two reasons. 1) Carts (especially Nintendo) are more durable than titanium I swear. Since I got my first console as a kid, having something that could handle being dropped and misused without breaking is a big plus. You get one little scratch on a cd and it's ruined lol. 2) Cartridges are considerably harder to lose than tiny discs which is another small feature that I appreciated as a kid. Personally I'm glad to hear that they're coming back in some small way, I've always had nostalgia for retro gaming while also appreciating the genuine perks that cartridge gaming had
@camthesaxman33872 жыл бұрын
It's a bit different technology. Old cartridges were basically just read-only memory that plugged directly into the system. Modern (DS and newer) cartridges are more like SD cards or SSDs. They are slower to access than ROM, but have much higher storage capacity.

True. The n64 is like the nes but for 3d games. It was ground breaking back in The day, but it didn't age well, with framerate problems and dated graphics. The gamecube is like snes: They have more power and aged better than their predecesors, but they were not as mind-blowing

In my experience, the N64 is probably one of the most sturdy if not the most sturdy console of all time. I've saw ones that were in bad shape and they still worked perfectly. The most common failure points to look after are the cartridge slot (a small bath in alcohol 90% for a few hours does the job of cleaning it if necessary) and the power supply (I had one which died on me not too long ago, I thought at first it was the console but it was the PSU). Other than that they were all good to go 😄

The most primitive computer storage was punch cards. Then came reel to reel magnetic tape. _Then_ came floppy disks, which were pretty revolutionary for the time. After that came the technological breakthrough of encoding your data onto cakes. And then someone thought “hey, what if the cakes were _really_ flat, like pizzas?”, and thus CDs were born.
