I’m not a Nintendo console owner currently, but our GameCube broke when I was younger and my dad called Nintendo support when it was several years out of warranty. They replaced it free of charge, they basically ensured I’d continue being a gamer growing up, and it’s just amazing to think that a company was that willing to help its customers out. I’ll honestly never forget that. Thought I’d share a cool little story from my childhood.

I have another story. Growing up my parents couldn't afford to buy me the latest video game console, but we did have an old NES, which broke so we mailed it to Nintendo. They weren't able to fix it but they asked if we wanted to buy a refurbished GameCube and 2 video games for 45 bucks, so that we weren't left completely empty handed.

It really made the ideas make sense in practical use. Being tethered to the TV made it a weird hybrid, while being able to dock the unit for a larger screen is far more useful. Nintendo has another cycle of this platform ahead with even better optimization if they don't screw it up. That gives them another 6+ years to come up with the next new great idea. They may not have it, but the IP alone is worth sticking around. Nintendo going the way of Sega would be heart breaking. Their games are only possible on their own innovative hardware. Glad to see they will be able to continue to deliver those games properly because of how well the Switch has done. Having kids has brought me back to Nintendo in a big way.

I would like to mention that you weren’t entirely holding the N64 controller right for Mario 64: it’s a lot more comfortable if you put your left hand on the middle prong. That gives you direct access to the Z trigger and the joystick without stretching your hand, and the D Pad isn’t used at all in Mario 64 anyway.

The reason why the N64 had such a weird controller and a trigger on the middle handle was because they wanted you to be able to choose between using a D-pad, (By holding it normally), or using the Analog Stick, (By holding the middle and right handle). Hope this helps you understand the weird N64 controller design.
@shaun80629 ай бұрын
You know what's cool? You can actually play all of N64's best first person shooter games using the D-pad for strafing and movement while using your right hand in the middle for aiming and shooting, more similarly to how hand assignments are used in modern first person shooters like call of duty. Some early literature from nintendo even suggested using the d-pad for first person shooters. No one back then seemed to do it though, as they assumed the yellow c-buttons were the way, which was fine, but those buttons make it hard for anyone to go back to play goldeneye today. When I show them you can use the D-pad, kids pick it right up like any other dual controls on first person shooters (phone games, playstation, xbox etc.)

This is true, but so many games controlled better via the analog stick than the D-pad that it really became a must to hold the middle and right-side handles by default. Nintendo did eventually realize this as the Gamecube controller was significantly better while still retaining a D-pad for when it would be the better option.

Also one of the main reasons the PS2 was such a success compared to the GameCube was that it was marketed as a dvd player which were very new and expensive at the time.
@kissadev.2 жыл бұрын
Also it was weaker in raw power than the competition... but not thaaaaat weak, not like Wii vs PS3 and Xbox 360 level, but somewhat weaker than the Game cube and Xbox. This allowed the PS2 to be way cheaper (mainly in developing countries) while still sharing games with the competitors. The Xbox was the most powerfull, thus the most expensive, people would not choose it over the cheaper ones, the game cube and the PS2. The game cube was the one in the middle term in terms of power and price, but the mini DVDs made it harder to pirate gamnes... the PS2 was the cheaper one AND used regular DVDs, so pirating was very very easy... the console itself was cheaper and the games were almost for free in developing countries (piracy) making it the really only possible option for the average joe in huge developing countries like Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and etc.

The problem of the WiiU wasn't that is didn't appeal to anyone as a new console. The reason it failed is because Nintendo never marketed it properly as a new console. Many people, even press, saw it as an updated Wii or the gamepad as a new accessory to the Wii. nobody knew what it really was. Nintendo completely botched the launch and marketing of what was a truly amazing console.
@steffanaarts-greven13522 жыл бұрын
@@rockapartie it wasn't its main problem. Yes it made things difficult for the die hard fans but the general audience doesn't care about CPU or GPU but buys a console purely based on marketing. And botched marketing is wat doomed it for the general audience Nintendo created with the Wii.
@lambiepie64362 жыл бұрын
It wasn’t truly amazing compared to Nintendo’s other consoles. I had one and loved it. Had A FEW solid games. But the software library was not that great. Probably because they couldn’t dedicate as much money to game dev. Plus 3rd parties hated development for it. While 3D World, MK8, and DK were awesome, it took a long time to get those. The launch games to get were Nintendo land, and the 4th NSMB game within just a few years span.

The Wii U was Nintendo's greatest moment. It's a shame not many people bothered to find out. Nintendo really screwed up their marketing and branding so people didn't bother as most people owned a Wii. The Mii-verse will forever be one of gaming's greatest forums. Having games link to the Mii-verse was an amazing addition. The games on the Wii U are most of the big games released on the Switch with the "Deluxe" tag added. Never forget that Breath of the Wild was made for the Wii U and held off for the Switch. Now with the ease of hacking the Wii U it has become the most useful console Nintendo ever made. It plays every game made from the start of Nintendo right up to the Wii U, plus some emulated ports from other consoles.
@MatthewCrellin4 ай бұрын
Just a slight clarification at 10:18, the GameCube normally defaults to and runs games at 480i. It IS capable of 480p output in most games, it just can’t do it with the composite AV cable that was included with it. You would’ve needed the optional component cable back then to run the console at 480p. Nowadays somewhat cheaper HDMI alternatives exist to get the same functionality.

Lol the flex is impressive, unboxing each of these consoles nowadays is hard to do, let alone all in one room. I have each of them from their release dates minus the original NES. Also the d-pad was rarely used on the N64, it usually controlled camera functions. The Z-button and joystick were meant to be used more often with your left hand by grabbing the middle part of the controller. A little bizarre but something that became seamless after awhile. Fun tip: On the gamecube, next time you're booting up the console, hold down the indigo z button and the console will make a different start up sound.

Fun fact: The "sensor bar" for the Wii is actually just two infrared LEDs separated at a certain distance. The term is kind of a misnomer. You can actually use two lit candles for the same effect. The Wiimote has a small IR camera in it that sees the infrared LEDs (or candles) and figures out where you are pointing. The motion controls don't require the "sensor bar". They are accomplished by accelerometers onboard the Wiimote (like in your phone) 🙂

*_"Thanks to the invention of the analog stick by a Nintendo employee"_* Nope. Analog sticks were on other game consoles years before the N64, as pack-in factory stock controllers. Magnavox Odyssey 2, Vectrex, and Atari 5200 all had analog sticks. Pretty much everything Nintendo is (mistakenly) credited for was invented by other companies first, with the possible sole exception of the light gun. Even the 4 direction D-Pad was taken from the MSX. Motion controllers were available as 3rd party add-ons for the 16bit consoles SNES and Sega Genesis. Controller innovation? More like design theft. To be "innovative" means to be the first to do something, not the first to steal it from someone else who did it first. The ONLY credit Nintendo can claim regarding the analog stick is the fact that N64 had the first "self centering" analog stick. All they did was add springs to the Magnavox design from the late 70's.
