Few months before October 7th i met a professor from England while traveling. She told me one of her classes in university was about the holocaust. after a while she decided to cancel that class because everytime the students would hear a description of jews dying or suffering many would openly express their joy. they we’re enjoying hearing about the suffering and death of jews during the worst genocide in history! She nailed it with facts and logic, and I was enthralled; she's an excellent speaker. Every one of the Israeli speakers was professional, coherent and factual and it is such a disturbing sign that people are siding with the 'screaming children' that ALL Oxford students have apparently become. The aggression that was shown to the Israeli speakers was just despicable and gets me worried for the future as these crazy terrorist sympathisers will just outshout and "out-violence" anyone who opposes their agenda. In 2000 the then Labour government made the Oxbridge admissions process discriminate in favour of state school students against the independent/public school candidates which previously made up nearly all students accepted. From personal experience I know how ill-prepared comprehensive school students are for an Oxbridge education. You can see the slide in standards in this debate and even more publicly by the way Oxbridge universities are regularly trounced on BBC's 'University Challenge' by Russel Group universities which now receive the best students as a result of the change in the Oxbridge admissions process.

I watched the whole debate and listened to the audio you recorded. You were all valiant lions. The point about the supposedly educated public preferring stories to fact is right on and very concerning. Storytelling has been weaponized in the public discourse, to a very alarming degree. I love stories, but this is not about good stories. It’s about duping naive ignorant people who want to see life in very simplistic ways. I was lucky that my first real facts about Israel came from Israeli Arabs, who I met while a student in Europe in the 90s. It was overwhelmingly positive without glossing over the issues. I’m trying to tell my son about it, but it’s not really registering, at least for now.

Jonathan was first, then Yoseph Haddad (an Arab Israeli who served in the IDF), then Mosab, then Natasha Hausdorff. Having listened to all the speeches on both sides I would say that Yoseph's was the strongest. Much of it was biographical - showing how his experiences are incompatible with Israel being an apartheid state and finishing by showing photos of Arab Israelis who are doing things that would have been impossible for blacks living in apartheid era South Africa. I'm not sure I noticed any particular effect on the crowds. The final speech seemed to get the least bad reaction from the crowd. But I don't think that's anything to do with the order in which they spoke.

Imagine if Oxford held a debate about whether the Holocaust really happened. It would be a moral obscenity. Imagine inviting the Armenians or the Tutsis or the Rohingya or the Timorese to a debate about whether the Turks or or the Hutus or the Burmese or the Indonesians had a right to respond to terror attacks the way they did and whether what followed was really a genocide or just legitimate self-defense. At what point does a debate about what is happening in Gaza become a moral obscenity?

I agree the debate audience was badly behaved - but never the less, those arguing for the proposition clearly won. I can understand that for this topic emotions run high on both sides - if Israel is committing a genocide - those defending Israel’s actions will in retrospect probably deserve abuse in the same way that we would not condemn verbal abuse against those defending apartheid South Africa
