Today we’re going over How the Private Pilot Checkride Works for your private pilot license. Following the standards of the ACS, things should go as described in the video, but every DPE is different and can present the checkride, or practical test as it’s actually called, in their own unique way.
The Airmen Certification standards were announced on June 15, 2016. Transitioning from the PTS to the ACS began at this time. On June 12, 2017 a revised version of the ACS was released, and official standards for the commercial pilot certificate were incorporated. This is why we chose June 12 as the start date for our information, because the ACS had a complete set of standards. Possibly a technicality on the start date, but I just wanted to set the record straight.
We recognize that the audio in this is a bit louder then we wanted. Sorry about that, we'll fix it in the next one.

I perfectly remember my check ride for IR . I remember my DPE that seeing me super nervous he repeated to me "Max relax, have fun and don't think about it". When we started talking I was in a river in flood. At the end the DPE during the de-briefing tells me "Max I have to congratulate you, you repeated every single word of the book in a perfect way, but remember FAA wants the discussion of the scenario and not the repetition of the rules"

I remember my check ride very vividly. I met with him, went over my paper work, said "we will begin now" he handed me a current weather briefing and asked me a few things about it. He asked me things on the paper charts (I lived very close to JFK airport in NEW YORK ar the time) Then we went out to the plane and he lointed at a fee things and asked me what it was and what it was for. He asked me how many horsepower the engine was, asked me about air conditioning and heat. He was coughing when we talked. After my preflight we got into the plane we got into the plane, I put my seatbelt on, he didn't. I asked him to put on his seatbelt he said "I have a cold and i feel uncomfortable wearing it now" o turend to him and said "well lets do this another day then because you NEED to be wearing your seatbelt" he put it on. At this point I KNEW he was going to try an throw me. We taxied, took off and I asked him "where u want to go?" He told me if a visual reference and town I knew. I headed in that direction and as we were flying he pulled rhe engine to idle and said "you lost your engine". I began emergency procedures and got 20 feet of the surface of a golf course. He applied full power and said "lets go" we did a few maneuvers and headed back. I contacted tower w/o listening to ATIS. I turend to him and said "I forgot to get ATIS and I am going to listen to it now. i had both the tower AND ATIS at the same time on the headset. I wrote down ATIS and re-contacted tower and announced that I had the current information. Landed, got back to his office and he said "you passed, test is over" We talked socially for a bit and he said "that was a good move on your part for the sealbelts and it was giid that you were willing to postpone the test. Most would have just wanted to continue. I am also glad you spoke up to me about the ATIS thing rather than try to cover it up. Never be embarrassed to admit to a mistake. Remember YOU are rhe pilot, no matter who is sitting next to you" i told him "I was trained by a military trainer and felt I was taught by the best"

@@flywiththeguys yes, I agree. I think the examiners mike to play stupid or buddy buddy to lull you into thinking "oh he's not that bad" rhen catch you in a mistake that you dont confess to. Or in the case of the seatbelt thing to see if you have more sympathy for him than safety. One thing ALWAYS go thru my mind when I fly is Safety is #1!!! Never ever have get there-itis. Stay SAFE on the ground instead of taking chances and ALWAYS be prepared for an emergency! When i went over mountain flying with my instructor he asked "what would you do if you engine quit right now." He said "find the two biggest trees and rip your wings off. The engine is dead, you dont need fuel and if you that low, you dont need the wings. Sure you my hit a tree and break a few bones and go unconcious but its better than being burned alive with all the fuel around you!"

I took my check ride in 1977 when there was no internet to refer to. The field examiner was the head flight instructor. The only actual mistake I made was in the take off and departure stall. I didn't let off enough back pressure and it went into a secondary stall but I recovered it with no problems. He was impressed by it and I got my license.

Wow, I finished my "Private" in 1978, and how things have changed today. I'm a fair weather pilot, owned 2 planes, not both at once, and it has changed my life. If anyone is considering getting their license, do it, you will never regret it! The air, up there, is where all pilots belong. If you want to know what control you have over one's self, you should go for it. Looking back those 41 years, I would never take them back. Flying, to me, is my #1 joy in my life. Not my wife or family, but the freedom of FLIGHT itself. I could tell you stories. I took my girlfriend flying, many years ago, and while flying around a small cloud, after clearing it, I opened the sliding canopy just a bit, flew through the cloud so she could "Touch A Cloud"! It's all fantastic guys &gals. Just do it!!!

I had a great time during my checkride…right up until the last five minutes or so of the flight! The DPE wanted me to simulate short field landing and gave me a 50 ft obstacle at the fence. While concentrating on setting up my decent path, he asked me a question about some mathematical formula that I never got from my instructor. When I couldn’t answer he starts raising his voice at me and shaking a manual while I was focusing on flying a good pattern. Just before turning base I had to tell him to please be quiet and we would review on the ground. He shut up and folded his hands in his lap and didn’t say a word until we were back on the ramp. I thought that I had blown it. As I was tying down he walked inside. I followed sheepishly a bit after. I found him doing some paperwork that I assumed was my pink slip. Finally he looked up and grinned and handed me my temporary certificate! That was the happiest moment of my life!!

@@flywiththeguys Thank you! It was a blur haha. My initial scheduled day had IFR conditions so I drove to the DPE's airport and we took care of the oral portion. I missed a few questions but from the Get go, he said I would miss some and I knew I would. I must have not missed a lot though because when there were some I could not remember, I said "I Don't know, but I can look it up!" He said "Don't worry about it. Just tell me the answer when we do the Flight portion." Lol. I got my letter of Discontinuence due to weather and he was scheduled over a week out, got my reschedule day and the weather turned out good enough so I flew over there first thing in the morning. I got there a half hour early, used the restroom, reviewed my flight plan and briefing on Foreflight. He was 10 minutes late... He said "Did you preflight yet?" I had not because I figured he would want to watch me... He told me to go preflight while he gathered his things. I went and performed the preflight inspection and he came out and said "Let's Go!" He wanted a short field takeoff, soni preformed one after the run-up, tuning in my radios both nav and Com, etc... So off we went. We went about 10 miles into the X-Country when he said, oh, we have a rough running engine, where can we divert? I knew from my planning the nearest airport so I glanced down at the iPad and sure enough, there it was. I turned towards the airport. He said "Overfly it at this Altitude and describe it to me when you see it." I did and he said, "Ok good, fly a west heading and get into slow flight configuration." We proceeded to do all the maneuvers. He took a few notes, I said aloud when I got off heading on my Power off stall recovery, he took some notes during my steep turn which made me nervous but he made no mention of it in the debrief, we completed the rest of the maneuvers. We then headed back to his airport, on the way over I asked a question about landing lights, he gave half an answer and said we will talk about it in the debrief. We did a Short field landing, then a soft field takeoff, then a soft field landing. Too my utter surprise, he said "Ok taxi back to the ramp".... After shutdown he said to compliment my Instructor and other mentors, which made me feel good. We went in, did the debrief, we went over the 3 or 4 things I missed in the oral portion. He answered my question about landing lights, then he punched out my Student Pilot Certificate card (Which I had only just received 15 days prior as I had done all my training on the paper temporary certificate lol) he printed off my new Private Pilot Temporary Certificate, shook my hand with a congratulations and off I went! Sorry about the Essay 😂

@@flywiththeguys Just so this is not part of my Book, lol. It was Alot different then I expected. I really believe that if you go into the Test confident, and you show you know what you are doing in all portions, admitting when you mess up of course, the ride will go smoothly and may be shorter than you expect. Mine was only 1.1 hours on the Hobbs meter. And we didn't even cover some of the maneuvers in The ACS. He also never failed my iPad which is my primary form of Navigation. I did have my flight plan plotted out on the paper chart which I showed in the oral exam. That may be why he didn't fail the iPad, idk. I also carry other electronic backups so I doubt he was going to fail all of them lol. Point is, if your Instructor signed you off and you feel prepared, you are. Just go at it like it's another day flying and have fun! Any day we get to go flying is a blessing in my opinion! Good luck everyone! I for sure can answer it. I personally do not like Pilot Institute. They do an incredible marketing campaign, but people I've talked to about it didn't like the product all that much. I personally recommend Gold Seal. I've seen quite a few systems, but theirs was by far the best for actually learning the content in a fun and interactive way. They've really gone out of their way to make a ground school, vs a bunch of talking head videos.

are the steps the same if i'm only going for a lite sport aircraft license??
@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 4 жыл бұрын
It's similar in the fact that there is a Knowledge, Oral, and Practical tests. The information on it would be similar but different, relating to the Sport Pilot Certificate and it's limitations. Also, I'm not sure the sport pilot certificate follows the ACS standards, but rather the PTS. Double check with your instructor for specifics. They may have a better answer then I do.

If you discontinue and return do you have to pay the DPE a second fee?
@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 10 ай бұрын
Depends on the DPE. Sometimes yes. Sometimes they include returning in their price. Good questions to ask the DPE when you make your appointment.

you said to follow the ACS but in the ACS there are no answers for the questions only gives you the references like FAA-H-8083-2 how am i gonna find answer in that book it doesn't tell you which page to look for the answer only the book serial number FAA-H-8083-2 please help
@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 6 ай бұрын
How the ACS will function is in the back of the book, all the block text. There it tells you how many questions for each section they have to ask in a scenario based situation. Also remember the checkride is an open book test. Make sure you know important things you can't lookup in flight off the top of your head. Thing's like regulation references arn't as important when you're flying and can be found once you're on the ground. Thats the type of stuff you can lookup.

Does a person have to pay the DPE again if he or she discontinues either part of the checkride?
@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 4 жыл бұрын
Thats something you have to talk to the DPE about. It's completely up to them. The one I worked with would allow one discontinuance and not charge if you had to meet up again. Same goes if I failed. He allowed one retake. So check with the DPE on their policies.

Fly With The Guys, So with a “Notice of Discontinuance” do you have to pay extra for the extra time? Does anyone know what the norm is on fees if there are multiple sessions?
@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 4 жыл бұрын
That really depends on the DPE and their policies. You would want to ask them that. My friend who is a DPE allows one Discontinuance under the same fee. I hear others will charge the same fee every time the show up. Some will charge half their fee.

Do you have to fly a cross country on the check ride?
@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 3 жыл бұрын
Yes and No. For the flight portion of your checkride you need to plan for a cross country trip, and you actually depart for it. For the test, your examiner HAS to take you to your first waypoint, so the sooner you can hit it, the better. I was told to plan a trip to Flagstaff, AZ. Now, because I didn't know what runways we would be departing when I was flight planning, my first waypoint was north of the deer valley airport, just outside their airspace, using a landmark I could fly over. This would allow me to depart any runway, and catch my route no matter what runway was in use. Well after takeoff, as soon as we hit it I called it out and a scenario "developed" where I needed to divert. The examiner was much appreciative of how close the first waypoint was. All in, my checkride was less than 1.2 hrs on the hobbs, but that included a 15 minute "remain outside class delta" from the tower. I have heard of guys planning their waypoint 20+ miles out. They're advised to fly to the first waypoint of the trip. In this situation, some will fly to it like their supposed to, others will divert early if they see you on course and performing the way you should.

If you recognize yourself being out of standards and need to correct on a maneuver, should you announce that or just fix it?
@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 4 жыл бұрын
I would announce it. So the examiner knows you see it and are trying to correct. Being audible so the examiner knows what your doing and thinking is a good thing.

Can you do the oral checkride at a seperate time from the air checkride?
@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys Жыл бұрын
Technically yes. Applicants will go to the checkride and do the oral, weather rolls in, and they discontinue the flight portion for another day. To do it intentionally is a different story and depends on the DPE and how they charge. Realize your paying for their time and experience. If it's not something unforeseen, like random weather, they may charge you for the checkride a second time to meet with you again. Some don't, but I think you get what I'm trying to say.

If the check ride portion of the test is open book, then how can you not pass it? Is the oral portion of the test also open book?
@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 5 күн бұрын
The oral portion of the checkride is open book. But if you're looking everything up you'll fail. its more for reference on less critical items. And if you have to look it up you need to know where it is. You cant just search for something. Lets just say, you have to be prepared. You cant just wing it.
