Purely outside of bug/tuning testing with PTR, I think you'd still see guilds trying to replicate race/speed clear tests on private servers. It's not nearly as 1:1 as PTR testing is, but PTR access may just make for a more level playing field without essentially mandating private testing for guilds who want to try.

2 reasons: 1) kite away immortal guardians in phase 3 (this is why the hunter). 2) bring the buff you lost by dropping the mage (3% damage i think but don't quote me) (this is why BM in particular).

I do wonder if the World First Classic (there, qualified it for all the "actually" commenters) race would have been if it required defeating all bosses and hard modes. Maybe still one night, but it would have taken longer and been more difficult. Also the fact it was released at 11pm in Europe must have been a factor, but that's not something that can be really addressed since time zones exist for a reason.

Guilds will literally setup their own private private-servers or hire some dad to do it for them. This is already being done. Unironically we come full circle and realise private servers with their 'memebuffs' not only made the fight hard enough (tightly tuned to very good gameplay) but also made it impossible to fully practice beforehand (because it would be new 'content' in the race).

This mid-classic expansion nerf was the dumbest shit I've ever seen. Unholy wasn't even the most broken class in 3.3.5, Warlock was. Unholy's going to fall so hard behind as Frost gets more and more Armor Pen in Ulduar, ToC and ICC. Even with busted Gargoyle Unholy will be behind Rogue, Warlock and Warrior in ICC. Don't think it will ever be possible for my guild to meet the dps check on Hodir, that is insane that even with such an optimized group from the best players in the world, they barely made it. The gear difference is not enough to account for how optimized they are for the vast majority of guilds.

The way you play the fight is you play with the buffs from the NPC's encased in the ice. You free them asap so they cast their 'buffs' quickly. First you look for the fire and stack that shit up ASAP, if you stand near it and hit boss it applies a stacking debuff that increase %dmg done. Melees have fast AS so tank + melees move to a fire. Caster will do majority of the DMG so melees focus on freeing NPCs after they turn into an iceblock again. I just typed a fucking book but my point being a big part of the high DPS is doing the fight well and getting the buffs fast. So learning the 'dance' of the fight as a guild can pay off hugely. It was known to be really tight in week 1 but it gear helps a ton

@MrHvleeuwen Don't get me wrong, I fully understand how the fight is meant to work, but bearing in mind even the best guilds in the world with 100+ hours on PTR, some still failed, doing all the mechanics excellently, while class stacking and while doing their rotations perfectly. The gear gap is not as large as that difference. And that's assuming you get your full BIS on everyone, which won't happen for a long time. Just to meet a boss that's just a dps check? Not very well planned. Fine for a competitive mode, like if they adjusted to 2.5min after 2 weeks, would be fine, something attainable to work towards. But as it is? Not even worth trying to prog on

@@Thegiggleofsteel Yea we always considered hodir 2min as a 'possible highlight for something that could be super tight even in week 1 depending on tuning' when thinking about WOTLK classic. Also if you dont race, it can be super fun to progress on for the better guilds (because then you can actually just wipe and go again). Like maybe week 1 you just save it for the end and do some tries and see where you end up %HP wise and then just kill it normal mode. And then you try again later weeks. The nerfed version is 3minutes long and that just completely trivialized the fight, you can kill that with pugs wtihout any strategy. I just want to let you know there is hope :P The fight is super short so all the small Improvements you make are not that small relatively. Like freeing the NPC's a bit faster so the buffs come a bit quicker, getting a bit more melee uptime on the fire so you get to 30stacks +60% spelldmg taken quicker, doing slightly more personal DPS. It adds up a lot for 25 players. Also dodge mechanics so you can drop a healer, that kinda shit. And it all scales super well with gear.

World first races are a sham as long as third party addons with tangible gameplay ebenfits are allowed, such as enemy skill predictions or text on screen or audio cues that tell the player what to do, as those groups loaded with addons have a huge, even unfair, advantage over those who play the game as intended (no addons).

Good job they had time to waste on a ptr for weeks . I realize that's kind of sour, but you can still have a world first race without spending so much time on temporary templates creating this idealistic image of the perfect Strat - an image which 'enough' players spend an entire phase striving for, enough to create multiple dichotomies. It's really unnecessary, the game would 100% more enjoyable if everyone got into the content at the same time, and all had to work it out together . Thats not even just 'my idea of fun', it would factually make it better. It's absolutely unnecessary to have ridiculous testing (Strat building ) regimes - it's actually deleterious. World first races and speed runs ? Not my gripe here.

World buffs in classic are a prime example of this, when nearly every single guild had at the minimal, a low key requirement for Raiders to have world buffs that were frankly unnecessary and pigeon holing (play how you want right ?) Stemmed from speed runs and the world first ... Now sure "don't want to put in the work the guild requires, find a new one" is a great answer, when they all strive for the same ludicrous image set by the 1% using testing technology for Strat honing. Historically those are the same players who start crying for the new content because their guild crushed the raids to fast on live . Which is a downhill slope I shouldn't even need to get into, but I will, rushed content to pander to the 1% . That's how we ended up with a shit expansion with a mythic raid encounter that only the TOP guild's cleared . World of warcraft has factually gotten worse since they began giving mass access to their betas . The beta's for BC and wrath were relatively elusive, same with the ptrs . It was there, but not at this level - I suppose social medias and streaming have a part to play but . It directly affects me .

Back then ptr also existed, to guilds has plenty guides. You most likely didn’t know them. You also had simulation tools such as landsouls warrior sheet.

And ofc players progression are way better than 10 years ago, which also increases difficulty to race first pretty solid.
