I think you don't give the lyrics enough credit for their meaning. There actually is a meaning buried within these random sounding words most of the time, but it's not really a wholesome picture but more a vague silhouette of what Anthony's trying to say and the music is trying to convey. Also I think it's really cool that the band writes relatively simple music (harmonically speaking) but at the same time it can be pretty hard to perform with Flea's awesome bass lines, Chad's groovy drum patterns and Frusciante's unforgettable solos. I honestly think RHCP is one of the most brilliant bands ever for their right mix between simplicity and weirdness and somehow still standing strong 3 decades after their first albums.

their lyrics dont have any surface level meaning, instead the words are used in a way that points towards abstract ideas and intangible things that cant be described but can be felt. For example, californication is about a lifestyle created from a negative energy or at least a source of that energy that results in a world of post modernism, consumerism, and materialism that ultimately damages the human soul. Instead of speaking about it bluntly the words used point towards it and only by looking at where the words point and not at the words themselves will you be able to understand.

I disagree with the point that the same strumming pattern gets repeated over the remainder of his riffs. If you analyze his live work, his solo work, and anything else other than the albums you can see the improvisation that takes place over every single repeating of the song, no two verse guitar parts sound the same in the live version.

No meaningful lyrics? What? Anthony Kiedis uses a lot of metonymy to express himself. It makes you wonder what he's actually trying to say instead of just easy language. For example, if you write about love and how great it is you can either say somehting like "I love you and we are great together" or "Two of a kind beats all hands tonight", the last lyric is from the song Universally Speaking. I believe that his writing is fantastic and actually very deep but I guess that his style isn't something that everyone understands. I liked the video but I thought that I should point that out.

Great video. RHCP are my favourite band and I think you could argue that there is another emotional narrative relating to California being driven through the chord progressions. Many RHCP songs are very melancholic and this is due to Frusciante’s use of major and minor chords in his progressions. Most of the time, his progressions begin with majors and end on a minor; te most common being F - C - Dm, which shows up in so many chillis songs. This in itself reflects an emotional narrative of happy to sad, much like the Californian dream itself, it sets up expectations of happiness, but ultimately concludes with a sad note; much like the people who go there with hopes of fame and glory only to be disappointed by the reality of California, something that Anthony talks about a lot in his lyrics e.g. tell me baby.

@@Brax1982 That's right, but he didn't explained it well. I think there is more to say for example about the rhythm section of the band and explore a lot more eras of the band besides Californication. There is more than Anthony's lyrics and Frusciante's chord progressions.

@@JakubPiasekMusic He did list all songs referencing California, some of them from the debut album. Judging by that, I think he took their entire discography into account. He needs to focus on the aspects that never changed throughout their career. Are you talking about any of those? What would they be? I agree that some elements were not present in the beginning, like the inclusion of ballads. Kiedis starting to sing more and more up to the point that rapping is the exception. To be fair, for some artists he described how they re-branded themselves. Adele, for instance. But that was last season. Maybe the rules changed, haven't seen it all, yet.
@JakubPiasekMusic

@@Brax1982 I think that the Chilli Peppers are the band that can't be defined by only one song or album. They passed through so many years and eras. Each album is different and neither is similar to other. They got through the funk metal rap style singed music to kind of alternative rock. You can't judge them by only one era. To experience the whole idea behind their music you have to dig deeper. Understand how they get through this progression. How the band line up was changing and how it affected their sound and playing. The guy in the video explained the idea behind the most popular songs which mostly featured Frusciante after the rehab. I think that is the most important era in their career and it helped them grow and develop musically. This band has really splited out fandom, that isn't centred on only one song or album. This guy should have mention they did it in the Hillel's, Navarro's and one that is today - Josh's. Each era has really different musical ideas, influences and styles. You can tell that just by listening. The aspects that haven't changed are the Flea and Kiedis. They are in the band since the beginning. Their musical ideas always were mixed well with whoever they had to work with. They're the foundation of the band. Choosing only the most popular songs is really underestimating the greatness behind the rest of their stuff. This is the band that even has b-sides on level of the studio album songs.
@Brax1982
@Brax1982 5 жыл бұрын
@@JakubPiasekMusic Yeah, they are around for longer than any of the others he analyzed, I think. Still, I think he at least picked the three things that never changed. Then again, I stopped listening to them after Stadium Arcadium. Clearly something has changed too much for me to bother. I didn't like the songs any more. I guess there is somethin to analyze there.

Omg, THIS and it annoys the crap outta me. By the Way isn't the only example of his scope, but listen to all of their albums, even the 80s ones. Yes, the lyrics in their funk songs are going to be more sound based rather than content based but it's not like that is an easy task and it's not like that's all Anthony does. His emotional range, diversity and skill as a poet/songwriter is severely underrated because people want to turn a few Chilis songs into dumb ass memes and talk about how they only sing about California and drugs. The quality of his contributions to the band are always being downplayed or outright discredited, even within the fanbase at times. I wonder if he finds that frustrating sometimes. Who am I kidding, he's obviously sensitive, of course he does lol. He just tries to act cool about it in public by jokingly referring to himself as "the idiot" in the band.

Relaxation Enthusiasm Movement Familiar Great video as always! I think the transition from that Dm to the F#m chord in Californication works fine because it's a slight variation in brightness, since it's just a modal interchange from D dorian (feels to me like that because of the time they sit on the last chord) to D major. What happens in Zephyr Song I believe, is very similar. Going from A minor to D major has the same change in brightness between the two tonalities. It makes me think that there is certain amount of brightness that makes the transition just the right amount of impressive to not slap the listener's face while still giving that sensation of freshness. I'll try applying the conclusion you left for the harmonic analysis aswell, I had never thought of it that way O: .

Funk Rock - Authentic - Musicianship - Rock Star Life Even though some of the points that you brought up were interesting to me, I feel like you barely went into how the Chili Peppers *actually write a song*. There's lots known about their writing process and I'm sure it seperates their songs from other people's. Instead you mentioned some aspects that are interesting, but sometimes inaccurate or even false. Admittedly it would be difficult to please caring fans, but this is where most of people's criticism on this video would come from. 03:35 what do you mean ''often songs revolve around him (John Frusciante)''? They don't. Maybe you're attracted to his playing as a guitar oriented musician or fan, but that's something else. Your take on Anthony's background as a rapper and its influence on his lyrics may be correct, I feel like you downplayed his lyrical intentions and authenticity massively. His biography Scar Tissue is full of his life's stories that inspire his lyrics. Just because the lyrics are rhymy and you don't know exactly what he's singing about, doesn't mean that the words aren't meaningful. They're both. I'm convinced you could've made a much more accurate video, including Chad and Flea, in the same 12 minutes. I'm sure music fans would enjoy your future videos even more:)

The reason they say ding dong dang in songs is because he couldnt come up with lyrics so he used it as a filler but Fleas daughter liked it so they kept it in

Hi Friedemann Findeisen, I am reading the book " the addiction formula", which is really interesting, a good book! THERE is SOMETHING THAT I REALLY WANT to KNOW: on PAGE 80 YOU SAID "From my experience, I could show you similar structures in marketing, card magic and public speaking". CAN YOU PLEASE TEACH ME THE PATTERN IN THOSE ARIALS??? PLEASE!

Their lyrics do have a meaning, even though it's very cryptic. But I don't think Anthony writes without thinking of what he is saying in favour of the sound. He does write much in favour of the sound, but there's always a reason behind those words that he's trying to comunicate. Even if only him or the band knows it.

I am very dissapointed to see half of the band excluded in "How the RHCP write a song" just because enough people already talked about flea. RHCP introduced me to a new way of funk. And not even that. Before RHCP I didn't even know that bass was an instrument. I liked music but was never really interested in the details. When I first heard desecration smile and a friend told me, that this is a bass, I wanted to learn it. (thats 13 years ago and I still own my e-bass) For the first time I heard a bass having his own sound and not just being the shallow background noise that assisst the guitar player. RHCP feels like every instrument has its stage. Guitar and bass going so different roads sometimes and still work so nicely together. Thats the answere I was hoping for in the video. Even if this video had some nice information, it's mostly about John Frusciante. And to be honest, thats the person I heard enough from any guitar player ever.

I really don't like your approach to their music. Because i know that most of their songs indeed have a familiar chord progression (thanks Frusciante) but your approach is in a to much theoretical way. And also saying the lyrics are meaningless and their videos and way of playing in front of an audience is nonsense? All the things they do, how they perform, the way they come up with songs is form a highly creative level and personal experience. So i don't think your video is right about the peppers. It might be your opinion but i don't agree.

The transition in Californication from Dm to F#m can actually be a resolution. Basically, dominant chords resolve well because they contain notes which are a half tone away from notes in the target chord. Dm is composed of the notes D, F and A. F#m is composed of F#, A and C#. So D resolves to C#, F resolves to F# and A stays in place. It's not the traditional secondary dominant resolution but it still works. It's a harsher sounding resolution and maybe the voicing their using makes it even harsher, I don't know. Another way to look at both of the examples you gave is that the chord they modulate to is the chromatic median of the chord before the change. Still, it's a great observation, that you only need a good exit strategy.

Funky Smooth/mellow Ambivalent For me, the ambivalence comes from the funky, groovy happiness from the style the musicians play in mixed with some bittersweet sadness in the actual harmonic/melodic structure. At least, that's what it feels like to me. And it pretty much fits what Friedemann says about "Califonrication": Superficially, all seems fine, but you can't get away from this feeling of something darker looming beneath. Both the lyrics and the music reflect how the band can see right through that illusion.

Please consider doing features on EDM artists. I think it would be awesome to see if their image and messaging is as consistent when they dont have the benefit of using lyrics most of the time. It would be a great test to the idea that chords and progressions would generate the sameish reactions.

Thanks for focusing on Anthony's lyrics! One comment about the "Psychic Spies..." line: I think that the strength of the line is in the fact that on the surface it's just meaningless words that flow well, but it contains a message about the way victims of "Californication" are taught to villainize foreigners and fear them for outrageous reasons. To me, the line is not just flow and sound, it's deeply meaningful.

The genius of Anthony is by turning the lyrics into flow, this allows him to act like the rhythm section, allowing flea to create awesome counter melodies with Frusciante while still maintaining the classic two rhythm two lead structure (ie californication) or focus on rhythm where each musician adds a lot of rhythm and a bit of melody creating a groove like in around the world

According to Kiedis’s biography “Scar Tissue”, the phrase “Psychic Spies from China Try to Steal Your Mind’s Elation” came from a sign a homeless-crazy person was holding on the street. Kiedis said he happened to see it, so I think the “steal” rhyme break wasn’t intentional! Love your videos BTW!
