Can one man change the world? The life and work of Martin Luther prove the answer to that question is an unqualified, “yes.” Stephen Cornils of the Wartburg Theological Seminary details the rebellion that fractured a centuries-old religion and changed the course of history.

Script:
Five hundred years ago, on October 31, 1517, a German Catholic monk by the name of Martin Luther posted some complaints he had about the Catholic Church on a church door in Wittenberg, Germany.
Luther was upset by the Church practice of selling what were known as “indulgences” to wealthy patrons. Indulgences might be loosely described as “get out of hell free” cards: pay this amount to the Church and the Church would make sure you don’t suffer unduly for your sins in the hereafter.
Luther felt very strongly that the practice not only made the Church look bad in the eyes of the common people, but had no scriptural basis. He believed the Church needed to reform itself or would lose its legitimacy.
Nobody, including Luther, thought that his complaints-and he had made a list of 95 of them-would amount to much. He simply wanted to spark a discussion on an issue that deeply concerned him. Instead, he set off a chain reaction that literally changed the course of history.
The name we give to this change is the Protestant Reformation.
Had Luther limited his criticism of the Church to indulgences as his friend, the Dutch scholar Erasmus, urged him to do, the matter might have been resolved and the old order preserved. But the headstrong Luther was not someone to be restrained.
Luther was what we could call today a flawed individual. He was brilliant and charismatic, but he was also vindictive and stubborn to a fault, and at the end of his life, sadly anti-Semitic.
Luther believed there should be no separation between the Bible and the believer. Every individual should have access to the word of God, Luther contended, as any priest did-or even the Pope. We take this view for granted now, but in the 16th century it was a radical concept.
And here’s why:
For more than a thousand years, the Church had been the dominant religious and political authority in Europe. It alone taught Christians how to understand the Bible. Luther was now challenging the very basis of this authority.
Not surprisingly, the Church didn’t take it well. What began as a squabble between a bold monk and the Catholic hierarchy soon developed into a titanic and bloody struggle that split Europe into opposing religious factions.
But the consequences of Luther’s ideas extended far beyond a religious dispute. It’s not an exaggeration to say that as a result of Luther’s ideas the modern individual was born-a free actor endowed with God-given rights that exist independent of government or any other institution. Each person could find those rights by reading and interpreting the Bible for himself.

The Real Truth Believe in the basic teachings of the faith (the creed, the commandments, the sacraments etc.) and be baptised. There is presently a high profile attempt to make catholicism mean half baked hippyism, but, blessedly, the church is very resiliant against doctrinal change. the Popes job is to clarify and hand on what we already believe. Many seem not to know it, but it is beyond the limits of his official authority to add new revelations or contradict prior doctrines.

Said this before in another comment but if i put it here it will be at the top in a way. Indulgences were not "sold" to the wealthy that would be the sin of simony. an indulgence was in effect a pardon from temporal punishment, that being the state which ruled them, Luther revolted against the church because he was angry with the church not giving the bible to all he also ignored that most people back then could not read or write in there own native language let alone Latin. the "rights" the Luther gave us were none, it was the Germanic tribes after the fall of the roman empire along with the catholic church and roman philosophies.

Hopefully these will be understood as objective historical facts and not biased partisan points: Jesus Christ founded ONE Church (not 30,000 different denominations) (Matthew 16:18) Jesus declared that His Church would never be defeated by the gates of hell (or human invention) Jesus left a “prime minister” to lead His Church in his physical absence from Earth. That leader was, is and will always be the Pope (albeit some better than others) Jesus did not become incarnate to simply write a “book”, He founded a Church and instituted The Eucharist so as to give us His grace to have Eternal Life (John Chapter 6)- This of course is the one and only teaching which caused many of His followers to turn their backs and walk away from Him(Jn 6:67) and sadly still does. The Protestant Reformation is either ignorance or little more than humanity stating: “Lord, we know what you want…but we want what we want and we choose to worship You not like you commanded us but as we happen to desire”.

There's too much misinformation about indulgences and this video spreads it! An indulgence is something you do which usually involves going to confession, receiving communion, praying, and doing something charitable such as giving money to the Church, in order to obtain more of God's grace to get you through purgatory "faster." I'm not saying they've never been abused in the past, but the explanation in this video is very misleading.

There is a difference between the indulgence 600 years ago and the indulgence today. If what you have described is the meaning of indulgence centuries ago, then Martin Luther wouldn't have a need to create his 95 thesis. Indulgence in the past were used in order to pay off a debt of a priest to the pope. It was used as a free pass in order to get into heaven which Martin Luther opposed because the practice is not within the context of the Bible.

Try reading actual historic accounts of what the Cath. Church did to REAL Christians, who loved & lived by the Word of God. You can find these things in 'Foxes Book of Martyrs', Martyrs 'Mirror', 'Trail Of Blood' etc., much of it written by Cath. historians themselves because they had no shame. CATHOLICS talking about how they took groups of men, women & children to various towns in Europe & burned them at the stake for the sin of "Heresy", because they did things like baptize the BIBLICAL way (by immersion of believers) rather than sprinkling babies, which Catholics STILL do, INSTEAD of God's way depicted in the Bible, as well as OTHER heinous things they did to those that followed Christ & the Bible rather than their evil Church. Those things were often done as 'examples' to others not to defy the "Catholic Church". Go online & look up the Spanish Inquisition (for an example).

I think that the Catholic Church started off Biblical but somewhere down the line, man became politically greedy and much more. Martin Luther was not trying to against the Catholic Church, he was trying to Reform it back to it's biblical roots but they did not want to be Reformed, they wanted to hold on to their own selfish political wealth and that's why we have a Protestant Reformation.

I'm a Catholic. I disagree with the Pope on immigration, Islam, and global warming. I think Priests that are guilty of child molestation should be punished. While I don't go to church much, I have read the Bible (several times), and still consider myself a Catholic. Martin Luther was similar. While he disagreed with the Church, he never stopped being a Catholic. I suppose everyone gets to make up their own mind, but for me the sins of the Church both past and present do not rise a level that calls for abandonment. So, I, for one, will not abandon the Church for light or transient causes. The Church has always been a guiding light for the world, and continues to be so today. The Catholic Church is the rock which Christ built his Church. Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. Interesting. True, abuse of indulgences was the particular grievance that motivated Martin Luther to write and nail his 95-point protest in Wittenberg under the cover of darkness on October 31, 1517. But to describe indulgences as a get-out-of-hell-free card is inaccurate, even if at the time up to today some may misunderstand them to be so.

Martin Luther was an arrogant, proud vulgar and vindictive person and the longer he was away from the Church the more bloodthirsty he got. Luther was so vindictive that while the Muslim invasions were going on throughout Europe he ordered protestants not to intervene in order to weaken the Catholics (who saved Europe from Islam) With the protestant reformation Europe lost 5 million Catholics which would be reversed by the miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary in Mexico known as our lady of Guadalupe imprinted on the tilma (cloak) of a native in Mexico which would convert 9 million to the Catholic faith On the tilma our lady appears standing on a crescent moon effectively saying she will defeat that false religion as well (islam) Facts about the tilma 1. The temperature of the tilma is always the same no matter the temperature of the building it's in and it is the same as a live human 2. A regular tilma from that time period would have disintegrated by now yet it is in perfect condition after 500 years 3. There are no colors on the tilma scientists can't explain how the image was basically imprinted on the tilma 4. The image actually hovers 3mm or so above the tilma 5. In the eyes of the tilma you can see the image of Juan Diego basically as you would see a reflection in a regular persons eyes 6. In the 1920s a freemason planted a bomb at the feet of the image and while everything around it got destroyed the tilma remained unharmed 7. Some thiefs tried stealing the image but it got so heavy they had to leave it on the ground There's many more miraculous thing that have been found using modern equipment but it's basically a testament that Catholicism is the one true religion that was founded by our Lord Jesus Christ Glory be to God

More myths from Praeger: Luther was a pernicious disaster for general Western culture, not just Catholicism... at heart of his new system was positing an "enslaved will" - so Luther, the drunkard, glutton and whoremonger could justify his personal preferences: unresisted libido, broken vows and hatred for the Church... spiritual decline started with the masses of renegade priests and runaway nuns as Luther established the 16th century equivalent of the Playboy philosophy, degrading man to the level of a beast... btw, Praeger's hero Luther also urged his princes (whom he needed to establish his religious dictatorship) to "kill and strangle them like dogs" referring to the Peasent Rebellion and later to the Anabaptists... then he wrote that he was not responsible for all this blood because "the Lord God commanded me to speak as I did"... how damned convenient!

Not honest about keeping people from the Scriptures. The Guttenberg Bible was printed in 1455, 62 years before Luthers "reformation". The Church has always spread the Word of God and has never inhibited it. However, the Word has to be understood in context of Truth. You are correct that the modern individual came out of this but the individual is headstrong, like Luther. Now there are over 30,000 distinct denominations all believing they are right. The division has given rise to the non-denominationals who are even more fractured. Jesus prayed we would all be one. Paul instructed to work out differences to bear with one another to preserve the unity of the spirit. How does your individualism fit into these two commands? Be honest.

Yes, this is a disappointing video. Literacy rates at the time of the Reformation would disprove the idea that the Catholic Church somehow stopped people reading the Bible. This is the great fallacy that the Protestant Reformation (and now PragerU) spread.

This video is factually incorrect, especially on the definition of indulgences (they are NOT "get out of hell" free card but rather a relief in the amount of suffering that is due to already forgiven sin). The person on this video has limited knowledge of the Catholic faith, and fails to mention that the Protestant Revolution was the largest looting operation in the history of mankind (where the property of the Catholic clergy was stolen and given to the local lords who supported Luther for that specific reason) and it led in the first instance to communism, rather than capitalism (Google "Munster Rebellion"). Protestant evolution was a deep tragedy that not only led to the breakdown of European unity (which in itself is a great tragedy) but led to other dangerous events such as the French Revolution and the Communist revolution. Luther's "Yes to Christ but No to Church" became Robespierre's "Yes to God but No to Christ", which then became Lenin's "Yes to Nature but No to God". Luther's Sola Scripture and abolishing of the Magisterium of the Church led not only to excessive individualism but also to the moral relativism, which is probably one of the greatest problems today. When everyone can interpret Bible for him or herself, what can say what the Truth is? The truth is what you want it to be. There are more than 30,000 Protestant denominations in the US alone and more are being created every day. Finally, as the Christ has said "by their fruits you shall know them". There is not a single majority Protestant country in the world which has not become an atheist basket case. Even the once religious United States is becoming secular in such a tempo that I doubt it will be a Christian country 20 years from now. Then again, you may ask yourself whether a country where milliona of abortions are performed every year deserves to be called "Christian"... This video includes so many lies, half-truths and ommissions that I don't even know where to start. Then again, it is PragerU so I guess I should have known better.

But a major problem before the Reformation was that the pope was considered infallible and had too much power. If the Church wanted a more balanced form of government, they should have appointed successors to all 12 apostles (Paul replacing Judas) with equal authority throughout the centuries. Paul became an apostle much later than the rest, but he reprimanded Peter (Galatians 2:11-13).

Luther was not antisemitic at the end of his life in the modern sense of that word. His writings against the Jews were religious in nature, not ethnic. He was mad at the Jews not because of their ethnicity but because he believed the Jews needed to convert to Christianity before Jesus would return, and when they didn't he went on a religious tirade against them. It's a massive anachronistic misread of Luther to call him antisemitic in the ethnic sense of the later 19th and 20th centuries.

Luther, while translating the Bible into German, also added and subtracted words in order to fit his own ideas. He also removed 7 books from the Old Testament and wanted to remove three more from the New Testament (James, Hebrews, and Revelations). If you want to simply believe man’s interpretation of the Bible that is infallible, nobody can stop you, but you might want to do a little bit of studying on the Early Church and how the Bible even came to be. The notion that the Bible is the sole authority is not only unbiblical (1 Timothy 3:15), but also illogical, for things can easily be taken out of context and distorted, as they so commonly are. Here are five things to think about: 1. Jesus never instructed His followers to write anything down. 2. Aside from writing in the sand, something which we don’t know for certain what He actually wrote, Jesus never wrote down anything that we know of. 3. Not one book in the Bible claims of itself to be inspired by God. 4. Nowhere in Scripture is there a list provided of what should be in the Bible. 5. The Bible is not self-interpreting, which means someone OUTSIDE the Bible, a separate authority, must interpret it.

It seems strange that you would have to pay money for your soul to be saved (not very charitable), isn't God the only one that can save a soul? The main funding for the early stages of building New St. Peter’s came from the sale of indulgences. Indulgences did more than help pay for the basilica, however. The abusive means of selling indulgences, included lies from priests and the papacy about their efficacy and is what kicked off the reformation. Purgatory? Do people follow this idea today? PragerU is usually so good with factual information, but this video is un-factual and lazy, you chose a bad theologian for your video. I'll take them one by one. The Church never approved of selling indulgences, priests where doing it on their own without Church approval which is both a sin and illegitimate. Indulgences can never be sold. He didn't define an indulgence correctly, it is not a 'get out of hell free card', they lessen the time in purgatory. Purgatory exists to purify you before you enter Heaven. If you do not repent of a mortal sin, like selling indulgences, then all the indulgences won't save you from hell. Protestants like this guy, love citing 'scriptural basis' but are unable to cite in the Bible where it says it has to be in the Bible. The Bible came from the Catholic Church, not the other way around. Luther didn't want to merely 'start a discussion' he wanted to start his own religion for money and power, which is exactly what he did. Luther challenging the Church as the only authority to say what he Bible means didn't help anybody. Now every time a Protestant disagrees with someone on what a passage from Scripture means, they simply decide for themselves what it means and will take the Bible and start their own religion. Like Luther did. He just took the Bible, took out the parts he didn't like, and added stuff in that didn't exist. Now we have over 50,000 denominations of Protestantism, and thousands of different versions of the Bible when there used to be only 1 Bible in Luther's time. So how did everyone interpreting Scripture for themselves work out? Chaos. It didn't improve anything. Every single Protestant thinks they know how to correctly interpret scripture, but if that is true, how come every single one has a different definition? Answer is because they do not have the Authority or ability to correctly interpret Scripture. There is only one correct interpretation, not 50,000. The Bible being only in Latin (and Greek) wasn't a problem because the Priest at Mass would translate from the Bible in his homily into German, English, or whatever language the people spoke. Again, Luther didn't solve anything. There was no problem. Only Luther's ego of wanting power. Luther probably did have one of the biggest effects on the modern world, but it was not positive, the wars that came from it and the utter chaos of everyone fighting over how to interpret scripture didn't 'help anything. All the ideas you claim came about from the Protestant Reformation like man being a free actor, with rights that come from God and not any institution, is false. These are Catholic ideas the Church has always taught for 1500 years before Luther. The Catholic Church always taught that man was meant to be free and his rights came from God, not any institution. Sorry for the wall of text, this is one of my favorite channels and it is so disappointing for them to put out such false information.

I believe you are in error referring to indulgences as "get out of hell free cards'. Indulgences were supposed to reduce time spent in Purgatory, a totally unbiblical concept. In the highly syncretistic theology of the mediaeval church, Purgatory was the place to which those who died in the church went to purge, or purify themselves so as to be fit for heaven. The periods of purgation were, generally, extremely long (we're talking millennia, not years).

You missed two essential reasons why the church played such a dominant role in Biblical interpretation for the first 1500 years of Christianity. Most people did not have their own bible as there was no means for printing copies, and making hand scripted copies was very time consuming and costly. In addition, in large part because of the absence of books, most of the common people could not read because it was a non-essential skill. So the church had to read, understand and interpret the Bible and communicate this to the people. And now that the common peoples have had their own Bibles for 500 years, we have a great many false teachings that are far worse than those of the Catholic Church. The lesson from history is that each of us must take responsibility for learning and understanding the scriptures ourselves.

That being said, the conclusion is only that Martin Luther and the Reformation are a big event that ultimately participated in building our modernity, by ways of consequence. The counter reformation displays through its very name that it originated at first in the Reformation, so its effects can be considered as Reformation's as well.

In 1520 comuneros from Castilla were against Carlos V. One of the things they said, they didn't want a German king, barbarian race. I see some kind of Xenophobism. Martin Luther said about the same king that he was Spanish, not pure blood, mixed with jews and Saracen.... Sounds xenophobic, racist indeed. Who wasn't racist was Carlos V, who allow under his reign the Valladolid controversy in 1550. The process that gave as a result the equal citizen rights to any American Indian within his empire. So, well, not sure about the world was shaped in the right way by Martin Luther. To discuss suscess of North Europe I would sign the pre industrialism and the resulting economics.

Wow. How can anyone be so happy about Christianity getting literally ripped apart? Think of how powerful a unified Christianity under the one, holy, apostolic Catholic Church would be. Go ahead, everyone, put your faith in Luther. Jesus Christ our Blessed Lord founded mine. There is a historical fact for you. I guess Christ lied when he said he would guide his apostles into all truth, huh? I pray for Christian unity, the type of unity that existed before Luther did the devils work of both chaos and division...

Later separating Church and creating hate against it. All Christians need to united under one true church made by Jesus Apostles aka disciples and that is Roman Catholic Church. Rest are false churches who don’t truly understand the word of God and follow there ego and think they know better than God. This video missed that point so there’s a dislike from me. Have you read the book "50 years in the church of Rome" ? It will change that incorrect outlook completely. Deep inside the Roman Catholic Church are things not even senior Bishops know about nor are these things made known to ordinary parishioners. Basically make Jesus Christ your personal Saviour and leave it at that, build a relationship with the Holy Spirit and get to know the Father in Heaven one on one. That is the key Martin Luther unlocked for the World.

Josip Ricov Catholic church split from orthodox church because patriarch of Rome didn’t want to share powers with other patriarchs and wanted to be independent from Constantinople. That would give him power over former western roman empire. He also made up the fact about papal supremacy. Christian Orthodox church still remains as the original and universal church of Jesus Christ and his Apostles.

This statement is almost as ridiculous as some of the Catholic Church's teachings. You ignore biblical teaching in favor of oral tradition, like the perfection and worship of Mary the mother of Jesus, the existence of a pope and his infallibility, the aforementioned practice of selling indulgences to fund such projects as St. Peter's Cathedral in the Vatican. And finally ignoring Jesus teaching on justification through faith not by works. Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Sola Scriptura.

It is hyperbole to suggest that the concept of individual rights owe their origins to Martin Luther. The ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Persians held the ideas. The Magna Carta of the very Catholic pre reformation England codified individual Rights in 1215 AD- 300 years before the 95 theses were tacked on the door by Luther. The effect of Luther's actions has led to the diminishing of a Christian Europe with a simultaneous rise in Humanism these last 500 years. The Protestant- Catholic Wars of old are nothing compared to what the Humanists have wrought in Europe in the last Century.

Gutenberg's world-changing invention of the printing press is actually way too often overlooked, while Gutenberg was to a large part responsible for the spread of the rennaissance and the enlightenment throughout europe and the world. The printing press opened literal knowledge up to all of the people of europr and the world and thus empowered the individual to a huge extent, who then could buy books for themselves and read, who were then a lot cheaper due to Gutenberg's invention, and not only the political elites like it was before. It was not only a huge achievement for technology but also for morality and liberty.
