I have to disagree with you on the stainless steel Daytonas. I walked into an AD 20 years ago and was told that it would take many years to get. Back then, stainless Daytona was the only one with waiting list.

I agree, I remember the same thing. It was the only Rolex that used to cost more pre owned than brand new, but you would never see the steel models on the ADs available for purchase. At least not in Texas.

I totally disagree with you on the steel Daytona. I got my 1st Rolex back in 1999, and I vividly remember the Daytona was $5500 US brand new but you could not find them on ADs, back then you had to pay around $6500 US (or 20% over RRP) in the used market. It was pretty much the same story thru out the 2000s and 2010s, with the steel Daytona being hard to get brand new and over list price on the used market selling for around 12-14k in the early 2010s, still above RRP. As a comparison, the watch I bought in 99 was a date submariner 16610 which retailed brand new back then for $3800 US, and I paid $2800 or a full 25% below RRP for a barely used piece. I sold it a couple of years later and I eventually regret it, therefore I bought another 16610 in 2011 for $4200 US, retail around then was about 7k if I remember correctly for the 116610. The Sub was still selling well below RRP in the used market. The steel Daytona has always been hard to get from ADs and selling over retail used. The two tone and the gold models were a different story, but not the steel, unless it was very different in the UK than in the US.

Interesting video. Not sure why your clients turned down the Daytona back then. I’ve been a watch collector for 24 years and 10 years ago the Daytona was still hard to buy without a spend history. Not sure what you mean by your clients not getting approved by “Rolex HQ” Rolex HQ as a rule don’t approve anyone, it’s not Patek. Distribution of Rolexes are through their ADs. It’s up to the ADs whom approve who gets what. If they spent £100,000 and still got getting a Panda they need to change ADs.

Maybe I’m just being a fit old fashion, but if I am buying a watch, I am buying that as I really love it and want to wear it, as distinct to thinking, will I make money on it. The only way watch lovers will get their hands on the watches they want, without being screwed, is when people stop buying from touts/scaplers/flippers. Don’t pay over retail.

Thanks for another great video Charlie! Been commenting before and wanted to update that I was able to purchase a sub no date directly from an AD now with a wait time slightly under two weeks. I didn't get a call but they offered it to me on my second visit to the shop and put me up for a Datejust 36, should be getting the call for that in 2024 I reckon. Looking forward to more great in person purchases as we discussed in an earlier video. :) What do you think about getting allocation on a two tone daytona directly from AD down the line? Should be easier than a pure steel right?

Thoughts…Certainly buy into the changing trend’s theory. However, specifically on the point you make about wearability of gold pieces as opposed to their oysterflex counterparts, I guess you mean the watches stand out less and are therefore less susceptible to watch theft? Quotes - “Stealth wealth” “daily them”, “the media”. My own personal view is that the majority of watch crime is seemingly perpetrated by sophisticated criminals, who know exactly what they are looking for, one could argue given the oysterflex models are more popular and therefore more sought-after, you stand just as much chance as having one of those watches stolen as you are the full gold pieces. I think if I had the choice between a full gold & an oyster flex for 35k,I’d choose the full gold all day and just be mindful of where & when I wear it. ⚖️Gold vs Rubber springs to mind in terms of intrinsic value. 🤔

“Am I not going to loose too much money”. I love the channel sir but this Rolex game such as “getting your money up” just doesn’t sit right with me. And this forced prestige mindset isn’t what watches means to me. Why does Rolex not make more and just sell them at the same wild price. Also, they don’t even sell them at these prices. Rolex sells them through ADs for waaaaay less. But for some reason there’s loads on the grey market. So there’s plenty being made? I’m no millionaire and my good watch is my 2021 Speedmaster Sapphire sandwich which is already too blingy for me but I love it. Love the new bracelet and the manual hand wind and display caseback. I obviously like some Rolexes but this game turns me off. I’ll keep to omega, G-Shock and I’ve my eye on the Tissot PRX. There’s so many other brands I love that I’ll get the chance to wear. I’m too shy to wear a big blinger of a watch but I’d happily wear the oysterflex. Also the sub or GMT on a sailcloth or rubber strap. It’s not about the price tag prestige for me. I like watches that are super accurate, complement an outfit or time in the outdoors. For £30,000 plus I’ll take a car please. It’s hard to read the tone of text. I’m a fan and will continue to. It just blows my mind this Rolex game as a marketer. Are Rolex not pissed off that the grey market are making far more money off their watch’s. Does this not upset Rolex? Anyways, away to check out the new G-Shocks…

My mum and I walked into our local AD 15 years ago, a place where my parents used to buy their jewelry from looking for a present for my dad. An hour later we walked out with a steel white dial Daytona for his 60th. He is still wearing it now at 75. I do think we got lucky that day but I remember it being no issue, we looked at other models which we also could have taken away on the day, that was the norm back then from my experience anyway.

Your family got jewellery purchase history on that AD. The steel Daytona had always been hard since the Zenith 16520 days on the 90s. Hard, but not impossible. As in it's rare that AD would let a first time purchaser to be allocated a Daytona, although it happened from time to time especially after GFC. Another fun fact from back then is white dial more popular in western countries, black dial more popular in asian countries.
