I'm not willing to play Devil's advocate, but I've been in the military and the reason is that the body of a woman is different of that of a man in some respects. In the present case, women have on average less muscle mass, are shorter etc. So the aptitude tests are easier when compared to those for men. However the tests are as hard for women as the tests for men are for the latter.

I remember doing familirisation visits many years ago and we had a female officer talk to us, and ALL she went on about was how attractive she was and how men struggled to control themselves and not hit on her. She loved it and every person in our group, male and female, came away saying we wished we'd never had the experience of meeting her. It was really embarrssing and uncomfortable - but thats just one women. Good luck to those trying to become commandos. I have no issue with females in the military. Just like men, if they can do the job they're in, if they can't they're out.

I'm all for empowering women but even from an equality standpoint, this will reduce the capability of the force. Even if a woman is capable of the exact same as every other man in the team, the sheer fact that she is a woman is detrimental to that team (and it's through no fault of her own). The dynamic shifts and team cohesion becomes an issue simply by introducing a woman. It's biology for young, fit, aggressive men to alter behavior around a woman. Add to that deployments for months at a time, isolation and stress. What happens if/when there's a hookup and subsequent breakup? What does that do to team cohesion? Does everybody pick a side, like a divorce? It's natural for men to treat women differently than other men. Old mate next to you takes a round in a firefight it's much easier to put his condition out of your head and get on with the job. If old mate was a woman, all of a sudden the dynamic changes, it's harder to ignore and get on with it. Are these things the fault of the woman? No. Should they be issues? No. But they are and no amount of policy, legislation, media attention or political correctness is going to change that. What's the simplest solution to these issues? Remove the cause of the problem. It's a hard reality that although the woman may meet all standards and have done nothing wrong, her presence may still detriment the team and it's beyond her control. The number one priority is the capability of the team, if for whatever reason you don't benefit that, sorry but you need to go. It's harsh but simple. The enemy won't care that she's a woman, they won't grant concessions to the team so they can account for any changes and so we shouldn't either. Warfighting is no place for political correctness.

Nah its all in your head mate. Youve made a decision to treat someone different based on gender rather than capability - as you said all else being equal. thats a you problem. If youre a professional then the other person being capable of doing the job to the standard expected is all that matters.
@Wile_E._Wolf
@Wile_E._Wolf 2 жыл бұрын
@@CareyB85 it's a biology/psychology problem. They're specifically selecting certain personality types for these kind of roles, during RTI they're exposed to sounds of women being assaulted to get them on edge and work them up. Why? Because the type A personality type reacts to this kind of stimuli and situation in a particular way. Why would they not just have sounds of a generic man being assaulted instead of a woman otherwise? Young, fit, straight, male type A's are going to have certain physiological reactions around young, fit, straight (or otherwise) women, especially adding stress, isolation and time. Am I saying every Commando is like this and will have these biological/physiological issues? No. Am I saying that many/most will? Yes. Whether it's a "you" problem or not, fact is it's a problem, especially when the majority of the team all have the same "you" problem.

Passing the physical requirements is one thing. The rivalries that will inevitably develop in the field are the problem I see, because I've experienced it. We did a 2 month patrol with 4 female junior officers, first patrol with women aboard. It was a clusterfhuck. Dudes were literally fighting over one of them who was playing the field. I love women, but a Marine has to be in very tight quarters with their mates and I don't see it working. We'll see.

From the small unit level up to the flag officer level. The causes and blame fall on both genders. And not always equally. In my 30 year career, I have seen it all. And 65% of the time when gender issues arose in any of my infantry units, it was because of immature, testostrone soaked, ego driven stupidity. You my friend, raise an absolutely smart point. Just because we possibly can, doesn't mean we should. Because we can allow women into elite combat units doesn't mean we should, or doesn't mean it will work to the benefit of the unit. Alot of media personnel fail to realize that the training and the all arms course is just the beginning. There is barracks and general regimental life and it's challenges to go through. There is the aspect which is elite combat operations. 16 air assault brigade. Special forces support group. They're not just training to achieve the beret and that's it. It's not a university where you work hard under encouraging conditions, and graduate and then that's the end of that. No. Your work is just beginning when you get that green beret.

I think there are some military benefits to having women in the commandos - for example communicating with civilians in war-torn countries. A scared civilian woman or child would be far more likely to trust a woman in uniform than some foreign burly dude with a gun. That may be sexist in itself from a “give women the ‘soft’ job” standpoint, like letting them handle communication with kids etc, but it’s a fact. Many people view women as more approachable and less threatening because of the sexist gender expectations in our society, but is it not more empowering for women to harness this attitude to their advantage? Or prove people wrong? And communication is only one of the benefits of having women in our military, they’re plenty of good articles online discussing this by trusted sources such as the bbc, and even if they probably have an agenda, a lot of the points they make are still valid and based on fact. I do think though, that no exceptions should be made for the physical standards, among other things. Wouldn’t it be more sexist if we made a distinction between “here’s what women can achieve” and “here’s what men can achieve”? Idk man, a lot of radical feminists dig themselves into a hole and end up misrepresenting the majority of women who just want equality and are willing to work just as hard, if not harder than men for it. Yes, most women will have to work harder than men to achieve the standards required for the royal marine commandos or the paras for example, but I think as long as we acknowledge their increased effort and help them achieve that standard all is well.

Late reply but if women can pass the same selection courses to the same standards, the inherent, glaringly obvious military advantage is unlocking 50% of your country's talent pool that was previously untapped. The UK is already struggling with recruitment numbers, unfortunately opening up all roles for women hasn't increased these numbers by a large degree so far. However, the idea is that if one can fine-tune the policy to encourage more female applicants and figure out how to enhance their potential so that they can fight to the same level as their male counterparts, that would be a jackpot for the Ministry of Defence.

if women's strength declines more sharply than men then that suggests they are not well suited to the toughness of Marines and special forces in warfare. Women in the military do very well in support roles and I acknowledge the fact that there are female fighter pilots as well as Royal Navy warship commanding officers. However, imagine a modern day scenario similar to the Falklands war where, as we all know, the Paras and Royal Marines tabbed/yomped some 50 miles to the outskirts of Stanley, carrying 120+ lbs of kit over boggy ground, rock runs and having to deal with constant rain, wind, snow, no hot food ( with the exception of ration packs) and fight battles such as Wireless Ridge, Mont Longdon and Two Sisters to name but a few. Not all the troops on the march made it to Stanley, mainly due to trench foot. The fact that the vast majority of troops completed the tab/ yomp is a testament to their training and physical fitness. I am not a mysogynist, but does anyone seriously think that a platoon or company or battalion of females could achieve the same result?

I come from a family of professional soldiers with fifty plus years service and combat deployments. Woman do not belong in combat units. It is a job for men only. Why choose a woman over a 20 year old man who can run all day and spend weeks in the Field with only baby wipes to stay clean and then fight a battle at the end of it . soldiers don’t want women next to them in battle they want strong men who can go the distance and women cannot keep that up the way a man can. They are not allowed to say these things because of politics. But in private this is what soldiers think. Women have their place but it is not in combat roles .

Science this, science that, data, blah, blah, blah… The short answer as to why there are no female Royal Marines is because they are simply not physiologically robust enough in all physical aspects when compared to a male to successfully complete the training. That does not mean it can’t happen. It just means, by the sheer fact of genetics, it is that much harder for them. That’s it. That’s all it is. No gender inequality, no sexism, no this or that, just simple biology. And that is fine. As long as they get the opportunity to try, which they do. And as long as they have to meet the exact same requirements in all regards.

@@blacksmith67 Your anecdote presents kind of a straw man argument though (I'm not saying you were doing it intentionally). Nobody would suggest that ALL women are weaker than ALL men, and I'm sure you weren't suggesting that all women are capable of the kind of strength you witnessed. That woman is probably stronger than some men, but one woman being able to do that doesn't mean that ANY woman can, even with a lot of strength training. If most women were like that Corporal, there would be female marines already. My suggestion for giving women more of a chance in RM training would be to prepare them better. If a woman wants to try out, there should be an extra period of build-up training at the start. In fact, such a program already exists - the All Arms Commando Course. Candidates on that course are generally not coming from combat arms, so they undergo quite a long build-up period (I think about 8 weeks) to get their fitness and endurance up to somewhere approximating RM standards before they start the commando course proper. I think there are some women in the 3 Commando Bde support arms. I know RM selection has changed recently to be more physically progressive so it might actually look more like that now.

Victoria Pendleton ... awesome cyclist but she missed out on a handful of Gold Medals because she was as emotionally brittle as a slice of burnt toast! Hardly the inspirational role model for aspiring female RMC. Couldn't CTCRM find the phone number for Jasmine Paris, who, as far as I'm aware, is the only female athlete in the world who holds a record in a combined male/female discipline (The Spine Race). Notwithstanding the value of the intent it's clear that chasing a female RMC is a total pipe dream. in 4yrs only 10 have passed PRMC (obv pre covid) only 5 have started training, 3 didn't make it through the easy 2 week Induction, 1 made week 6 but had been excused PT since week 4 and 1 has made week 14 but has taken 18mths to get there (a couple of weeks in a Troop then into Remedial for a couple of months and repeat time and again) and yet she still can not pass the Bottom Field Tests But the issue here isn't the fact females can't get through, its that we're wasting their time promising them they can do it when they can't. They could be forging careers in another role but we're pushing them into risking long term injuries trying to attain the impossible. And, even worse than that, Recruit Training isn't anywhere near as hard as the first year on a Commando Unit! How will she cope then without the bespoke support of CTCRM? That's not equality, it's pure sexism hiding behind the pretence of equality and it does both parties a significant disservice.

Like In the slide it said “women underrepresented” now is that because women are just being pushed away or is it just because women don’t really on a whole actually want to be a Front line role let alone RMC. I think like many others put is that as long as the standards are the same for both sex’s then that won’t cause much issues when it comes to respect for the soldiers. I don’t think pushing to have women in the military in front line combat is a the best idea and doing it just because there “low representation” doesn’t make it right.
